The REAL "Glee"

"Broadway or Bust" -- Three-Part PBS Mini

It’s non-stop drama when 60 of America’s top high school musical theater performers arrive in New York City this summer for an intensive week of “theatrical boot camp” as they vie for a shot at stage stardom in the ultimate national theater competition. The annual event is the subject of the new three-part primetime series, BROADWAY OR BUST, airing Sundays this fall, beginning September 9, 2012 on PBS (check local listings).

BROADWAY OR BUST will be the first-ever TV series to capture the behind-the-scenes coaching and grueling rehearsal schedule leading up to the National High School Musical Theater Awards (NHSMTA). Popularly known as “The Jimmy Awards”—named in honor of renowned Broadway theatre owner and producer James M. Nederlander—this national competition culminates in a unique weeklong New York experience—a make-it-or-break-it week of rehearsals, coaching and auditions that are capped by an awards event on a Broadway stage in front of a live audience and a panel of high-profile judges.

Producers WGBH Boston and Lance K. Shultz have teamed up with the National High School Musical Theater Awards, created by Nederlander Alliances, LLC and Pittsburgh CLO, and produced by The Broadway Education Alliance in association with Pittsburgh CLO, and 30 top regional musical theater programs to bring this series to PBS. Airing as part of the PBS’ Arts line-up, a multiplatform commitment to make the arts accessible to all, BROADWAY OR BUST is comprised of three hour-long episodes and airs on consecutive Sunday nights, September 9-23, 2012 at 8:00-9:00 pm ET on PBS (check local listings).

“WGBH is thrilled to be working with Lance Shultz and the NHSMTA to bring audiences across the country a look at the enormous talent of these young performers, and the emotional
process they endure as they take on a once in a lifetime opportunity to compete at ‘The Jimmy Awards’,” says WGBH Executive Producer of Lifestyle Productions, Laurie Donnelly. “We believe that these performers will truly touch the hearts of viewers as they have ours, positioned against the magical backdrop of Broadway.”

Part competition, part performance and part non-fiction drama, BROADWAY OR BUST will capture the highly charged atmosphere as the country’s most talented teens are plunged into the theatrical capital of the world to compete for a shot at Broadway and college scholarships. In addition to being hosted by Broadway stars Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox surprise visits and cameo appearances by some of today’s biggest Broadway names will offer the kids insider perspectives and tips about working on the Great White Way.

“Full of captivating performances, compelling characters and dramatic storylines, this series will pull back the curtain to show viewers the whole process—the talent, ambition, drive, vulnerability, discipline, resiliency, dreams dashed and dreams fulfilled—both the highs and lows of what it takes to make it to Broadway,” says BROADWAY OR BUST, executive producer, writer and director, Lance Shultz.

The series begins as young talent from all over the country try to catch their big break at highly competitive, regional musical theater awards competitions in over 30 cities including, San Diego, Memphis, Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Next, follow the finalists in New York for a grueling and energizing week of behind-closed-door performances, voice and acting sessions. The final hour will showcase “The Jimmy Awards,” at New York’s Minskoff Theatre, the finalist performances, the celebrity hosts and presenters, and the naming of the winners—the top male and female performers.

BROADWAY OR BUST is a co-production of WGBH Boston and Lance K. Shultz, in association with the National High School Music Theater Awards. Funding for the series is provided by PBS. For additional information, please visit pbs.org/broadwayorbust.

Lindsey Buckingham!

Lindsey Buckham's
Tour Starts Today

Due to overwhelming demand, Lindsey Buckingham is extending his critically-acclaimed U.S. tour with additional dates on the East coast and Midwest.  He’s also making a few stops in Canada.  The new six-week trek begins July 26 in Birmingham, AL and lasts through September 8, 2012 in Rama, Ontario.  As for the rest of the country, they need not worry, as even more tour dates are in the works and will be announced in the coming weeks.

In his intimate-one-man show, Lindsey will showcase his distinctive guitar picking style and instantly recognizable voice in his usual awe-inspiring form, captivating his audience with songs from his recent album, "Seeds We Sow," as well as performing a combination of favorites from his previous solo albums, along with a variety of Fleetwood Mac classics.

Regarding the new tour he says, "As I've grown as an artist, I've gotten more and more in touch with my center, and that center is voice and guitar. Over time it has become increasingly vital to express more with less; that is my touchstone now, and the embodiment of that philosophy is what will be largely represented in the new show. I've been thinking of doing this kind of tour for a while, and am quite excited to be doing something new, something outside my comfort zone."

Godfadda

The Godfather Legacy

Coppola, Pacino, Caan, historians, cops, and mobsters weigh in on the
iconic film trilogy that changed America

The Godfather, Part II

Narrated by Actor Michael Imperoli

The Corleone crime family has touched millions of lives for more than four decades. From their origins in a pulp fiction novel by author Mario Puzo, the Corleones inspired one of the most important and enduring films in history. Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather not only broke box office records and earned wild popular acclaim – it actually infiltrated the American conscience.

The Godfather Legacy, a new two-hour special premiering Tuesday, July 24 at 9pm ET on HISTORY, looks at how this groundbreaking 1972 film and its two sequels transcended Hollywood, transformed the American psyche, and even influenced real-life organized crime. Michael Imperoli, known for his role as Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos, narrates the special.

The Godfather burst onto the scene during a pivotal time in American history. The war in Vietnam raged and the Watergate scandal eroded our image of the government. Meanwhile, baby boomers were redefining the institution of marriage, women’s rights and the American Dream. Vito and Michael Corleone, countercultural outsiders who thrived in a world of dirty cops and corrupt politicians, were metaphors for the era.

In THE GODFATHER LEGACY, historians, scholars, law enforcement agents, and real-world Mafiosi explain how these powerful mobsters, with their moral ambiguity and human flaws, resonated with audiences and impacted popular culture. The film features interviews with screenwriter/director Coppola, Al Pacino, James Caan, Joe Mantegna, Talia Shire, and others, along with an abundance of memorable scenes from the Oscar-winning trilogy.

What Happened?

What Happened?

BeansTalk Looks at Actors and Actresses Who Either Didn't Live Up to Their Potential (or Hype) or Who Seem to Making Odd, If Any, Choices for Their More Recent Acting Work

Kelly McDonald never matched her "Top Gun" success.

Elisabeth Shue

Kimberly Paisley-Williams

Dean Cain -- flamed and burned after "Lois and Clark"

Mykelti Williamson had such promise in "Forrest Gump"

Rory Cochrane was so good in "Empire Records"

Adorable Amy Dolenz looked a lot like Sarah Michelle Gellar when she started her career.

Ethan Embry, so likable, should work more

Joseph Finnes, couldn't match his acclaim in "Shakespeare in Love" -- he's a little O.A.  but can still charm.

Gorgeous Keisha Castle-Hughes, so pretty and talented in "Whale Rider;" no  doubt her pregnancy at 16 put a damper on her very promising career.

She was so good in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but Kristy Swanson was another who never quite lived up to her potential. She has a fun turn as Carleton's love interest in USA's excellent and funny "Psych."

What happened to Josh Harnett? He was so smokin' for awhile there -- and was awesome in "Lucky Number S7evin."

Rebecca DeMornay was iconic in "Risky Business," but  almost 30 years in the  movie business never  gave her role that garnered the kind of initial interest.

Robin Tunney is indeed in a current TV series, but she seemed like someone who would truly take her sexy girl-next-door looks, and her raspy voice and be a movie star ("The Craft," anyone?)

This is more about What Happened to her?  We were watching "Rabbit Hole" with Nicole Kidman and  the COO was so distracted by her (alleged) facial work, that we switched over to "My Mom's New Boyfriend" and not only were were so embarrassed for the phone-it-in performance Meg Ryan delivered, but her face was almost identical to Kidman's. It was too creepy and we turned the TV off.

Love Colin Hanks -- he was soooo good in "Orange County,'" and equally good in "The Great Buck Howard" and for his turn on "Dexter," but he really had (has?) potentially to challenge his father Tom's star power, he's that good and likable.

Cynda Williams

Is Oscar-winner Helen Hunt a good example of how challenged women are in the movie business? After her big  award win, she hasn't done much and certainly can't be considered as able to open a movie.

So talented and so pretty, like you, we want to know why Bridget Fonda dropped out of the movie biz.

We don't mean to lump the son-of-a-legacies together, but like Colin Hanks, Jason Ritter  is aimable and charming. And should work more.

Maybe it was Jesse Bradford's seeming cockiness that ultimately didn't translate to more "grown up" roles, but he was hot for a little bit, and then, not so much. Wonder what he's up to.

Johnny Whitmore was so darling in "Empire Records" and "Bye Bye Love," we were genuinely surprised when he just didn't really go forward. We were happy to see him -- albeit in a small and tragic role -- in Bradley Cooper's "Limitless."

Hailed a wonder -- and why not -- she exudes beauty and intelligence, Leelee Sobieski seemed so ripe for seriously big stardom. Is it because she's too tall for most of Hollywood's leading men?

Lori Petty, so appealing in "Point Break," her raspy voice (yes, like Robin Tunney's)  and lithe body, we just wonder what happened?

"The Boy Who Could Fly's" Lucy Deakins was such a pretty, accessible actress. But she opted for real life and became an attorney and gave up the Hollywood life.

"The Slums of Beverly Hills" seemed to introduce a new kind of  star -- quirky and edgy and refreshingly normal. But Natasha Lyonne seems to have let her demons take over her and she's been passed over.

"Almost Famous" and its hyped promotions really touted Patrick Fugit as an actor who was going places. They just didn't tell you that those "places" were roles in obscure or just-plain-bad films.

She was everywhere and then .... she doesn't seem to be anywhere. Where is Rene Zellweger and what is she doing with  her career?

Wes Bentley, Skeet Ulrich, Johnny Whitmore, Jesse Bradford, Rory Cochrane -- all actors who had audiences wondering what they'd do next, and confirming that they'd show up for whatever movie they ended up in -- but it never seemed to come. Still, Bentley, seen here, had a fun role in this year's "The Hunger Games."
