A healthy and happy Claudia Christian
Babylon 5 Star Claudia Christian's
Tell-All Candidly Chronicles Her
Battles With Addiction

by Joachim Jocson
BeansTalk Contributor

Celebrities, with their seemingly endless supply of adulation and alcohol, are no strangers to addictions; sadly, it's the frequent subject of entertainment magazine covers.  In a universe where relapse is more common than sober success, popular "Babylon Five" actress Claudia Christian can count herself in the latter category.

Christian's battle with alcohol addiction is the subject of her memoir Babylon Confidential: A Memoir of Love, Sex and Addiction

Christian, currently on a book tour, tells BeansTalk it was a conversation with Dr. Roy Eskapa (The Cure for Alcoholism), that sparked her interest in penning her book. Eskapa suggested she chronicle  her experience with alcohol addiction and the Sinclair Method treatment. Sinclair, she says, provides an effective solution to excessive drinking.

The actress candidly discusses her pre-sober life and her days of rehab and recovery, for which she credits the Sinclair Method.

It’s been four years since she applied the Sinclair Method to her recovery, Christian tells BeansTalk. Like many who suffer from addictions, finding a successful path  was a rocky road. Initially, she went to a rehab facility in northern California and dabbled in psychotherapy for a couple of years.

She combined therapy with hypnosis, vitamin therapy, and the best known program, AA (Alcoholics Anonymous).

“I would go from one to 11 months and never hit the year mark, then I would fall off the wagon,” says Christian. For five to six years, she struggled with attempts to quell her addiction. She fretted about seizures, visited a detox center. Finally, in 2009, she discovered the Sinclair Method and for four years Christian has been clean.

The book has been a cathartic experience for her, but it hasn't been without its challenges: “I think the most difficult part for me was to come clean about my problem of alcoholism, because it is embarrassing. When you go through it, you are in denial. So to 'fess up, that was really the hardest part to write.”

Unlike many addicts who fight with their inner demons daily, fighting the urge to drink, Christian says she hasn’t thought about drinking or had one, that specter of alcohol addictions no longer lingers like a cloud above her.

With her book, Christian says she'll not only remain sober, but she's committed to   to help others affected by alcohol addiction. She stays true to her word: her book's website (http://www.babylonconfidential.com/) offers readers an opportunity to leave a message and she promises to respond with advice on methods and treatments.

“I would tell them if they are drinking too much, or if their drinking is controlling/affecting their life in a negative way, to give the Sinclair Method a chance,” she encourages. Christian recommends Dr. Eskapa’s book for insight as to the science of alcoholism.
Christian as Commander Susan Ivanova of "Babylon 5"

Next month Christian and former "Babylon 5" castmates reunite for the 20th anniversary of the series' pilot. She continues to write, and is at work on a science-fiction military novel, Wolf's Empire, which already has a publisher. For more info, (http://claudiachristian.net).

Christian's candid memoir will be of interest, not only to the legion of "Babylon 5" fans, but to anyone interested in the proverbial road to recovery.

Babylon Confidential: A Memoir of Love, Sex and Addiction is now available. In addition to her addiction, Christian dishes on celebrity relationships, including those with Rob Lowe, George Clooney and Dodi Fayed (who died alongside Princess Diana). She also discusses a very awkward date with the acclaimed, then-married "Babylon 5" creator and writer J. Michael Straczynski, spurning William Shatner's advances, her departure from "Babylon 5," and sci-fi legend Harlan Ellison's subsequent diss. Christian also has had her share of obsessive fans, and she recounts (with great humor) the time when a fan, dressed as a giant Tribble (think and remember "Star Trek"), shot her (luckily the bullet was a blank).  For more, get the book!

Mike Vensel and Elliot
Evan Debut Collections

By Alex Stedman

BeansTalk Biz Contributor

One of the dresses of Vensel's 2013 Fall-Winter collection, Oblivion.

Two Fall-Winter 2013 hotly anticipated collections were released at Siren Studios in West Hollywood Saturday, March 9, 2013, as a part of LA Concept Fashion Week.

Mike Vensel helped start LA Concept Fashion Week years ago and used the outlet he created to release his Fall-Winter 2013 collection, Oblivion. The runway show featured models in his iconic, classic, feminine designs. They strutted down the runway in formal monochrome dresses that featured pops of color throughout the show.

“I just try to design from the viewpoint of, ‘If I was a woman, what would I want to wear?’” Vensel says. “What is the ultimate dress? Or what is the ultimate minimal statement? Or the ultimate piece or the ultimate t-shirt, even? So I try to always think with these silhouettes, but always try to be kind of body conscious.”

The veteran designer is known for his feminine cuts and this collection featured what followers of his fashion are used to, but with touches of new flare, including one piece where an entire model’s face was covered.

LA Concept Fashion Week at Siren Studios in West Hollywood, where Mike Vensel and Elliot Evan, among others, debuted their 2013 Winter-Fall collections.

Vensel said LA Concept started as just him and a couple of friends believing shows could be done better, so they reached out to designers and sponsors and the event has grown over the years. Concept used to be held at Ace Gallery in Beverly Hills, but in recent years moved to Siren Studios.

“We want to kind of create something that’s consistent and known by people, and people are familiar with it, and it’s intimate and comfortable, and affordable for the designers,” he says.

During the day, noted designers Jen Awad and Nikki Rich had runway shows to debut their newest collections. Vensel had the last show of the day.

LA Concept featured past designers, like Vensel, but also featured a newer designer named Elliot Evan, who Vensel endorsed as an “amazing up and coming designer.” The 26-year-old debuted his Fall-Winter Collection Never Forever, Uniform A at the same time as Vensel in a presentation that was part of a rooftop party at Siren Studios, complete with an open bar, a view of downtown Hollywood and tons of well-dressed young people.

Evan is known for his designs in menswear. The presentation featured male models in his signature sleek, sharp cuts. They stood for onlookers around motorcycles and crushes beer cans for props, and fog even eventually filled the room later in the evening.

“I’m just interested in who I am and I’m trying to see myself in an alternate universe,” Evan says of his menswear designs. “I’m trying to perfect it. That’s one of the biggest things, is like, me in the perfect world. And I’m just going to keep making that until it’s perfect.

The show also featured some women’s designs as well, though. Evan said he likes the softness of a woman and that woman’s designs can often be more androgynous.

Vensel said Evan has shown with him three times in the past six months. Evan also recently debuted at New York Fashion Week as well.

“Luckily, people liked what I made and seemed to be really positive,” Evan said of New York Fashion Week. “I had amazing models, amazing makeup, all those pieces of the puzzle came together and made a great show.”

"[The] quartet still has the ability to surprise...The Hollywood Bowl has rarely been as ebullient as it was on Monday," said the Los Angeles in a review of a sold-out 2011 show. Red-PR Tips on Hair Fashion

What's Hot in Hair

Nape-Skimming Fishtails

To get the beautiful braided nape-skimming braid crown from Christian Siriano's FW13 show, begin by blow drying hair with the Centrix Q-Zone Dryer.Create a straight part down the center of hair, all the way to neck with the tail-end of the Amped UP Teasing Brush. Smooth each side, then divide each side into two sections above the ear and smooth with the Friction Free Paddle Brush. Take one section on the right side and create a fishtail braid. Next, take the second section on the right side and create a traditional three-strand braid. Repeat on the left side, except switch fishtail and 3-strand braid opposite from right side. For the final step, take each braid and tuck into the opposite side where the sections meet. Secure with bobby pins.

Crown of Braids

What could be better than a romantic half-up half-down incorporating a crown of braids? Rodarte was on-point with their ethereal hair look this season. Start by blow drying with Centrix Q-Zone Dryer with additional reinforcement from the Power Booster attachment. Create loose texture around the head with the Friction Free 1¼" Curling Iron. Take a 3" section of hair from the temple, and pull away from hairline on each side. Braid both strands. Once secure, pull apart the knots to give more texture. Bring braids together to meet in the back of head and secure into each other in a messy bun using bobby pins.

Artistic Uprising
The Arts in Nazi
Germay's Camps

Defiant Requiem: Voices of Resistance
Sunday, April 7, 2013
10:00-11:00 p.m. ET on PBS

– Gripping story of an artistic uprising in a Nazi concentration camp is told through archival film, prisoners’ artwork, survivor recollections, cinematic dramatizations,
evocative animation and soaring concert footage –

In the spring of 1944, a handpicked group of Nazi officers was treated to an unusual performance by inmates in a concentration camp. What appeared to be a soaring rendition of a choral masterpiece was intended as a subversive condemnation of the Nazis and a desperate message to the outside world. In the face of horrific living conditions, slave labor and the constant threat of deportation to Auschwitz, the Jewish inmates of Terezin concentration camp — artists, musicians, poets and writers — fought back with art and music.

Led by conductor Raphael Schächter, a chorus of 150 inmates performed one of the world’s most difficult and powerful choral works, Verdi’s Requiem, a Catholic work re-imagined by imprisoned Jews as a condemnation of their captors. Ultimately, they performed for Nazi senior officers and the International Red Cross, singing what they dared not say. Six decades later, conductor Murry Sidlin and a new choir take Verdi’s Requiem back to Terezin to reawaken this little known chapter of heroism and the resilience of the human spirit. Combining soaring concert footage, powerful survivor recollections, evocative animation, archival images and the prisoners’ own artwork, this artistic uprising is brought to life in DEFIANT REQUIEM: VOICES OF RESISTANCE, premiering Sunday, April 7, 2013, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET (check local listings) on PBS.

Just 40 miles west of Prague, the old fortress town of Terezin had been converted into a makeshift “holding pen” for the Czech Jews during WWII. Within months, the town built for 6,000 people was bursting with nearly 60,000 Jewish inmates. An imprisoned conductor, Schächter rallied his fellow inmates with clandestine musical gatherings, and what began as a fight for survival soon exploded into a cultural rebellion. Artists captured the horrors around them on paper, playwrights staged plays with makeshift sets and costumes, composers wrote new compositions, and thousands of concerts and lectures provided late- night escape for inmates longing for a return to humanity.

This artistic uprising reached its peak when Schächter attempted a performance of one of the world’s most demanding choral works, Verdi’s Requiem, intended as a condemnation of the Nazis. Schächter painstakingly taught the Latin text, which promised divine judgment against evil, to his choir of 150, using a single smuggled score. They performed the Requiem 16 times for fellow prisoners, accompanied only by a single piano.

Eventually, the Nazis took notice of the artistic enclave at Terezin; rather than crush it, they twisted it to their own advantage. They invited the International Red Cross for a highly orchestrated visit to what they call a “self-governed Jewish city” and cynically documented the town’s makeover in an infamous propaganda film, The Führer Gives a City to the Jews. Following massive deportations, Schächter’s choir had been reduced to 60, but they seized the opportunity to use their music to confront the Nazis under the gaze of the Red Cross delegation, desperately hoping their condemnation might pierce the painstakingly staged propaganda.

Now, 60 years later, conductor Murry Sidlin has realized his dream of bringing his own chorus to Terezin to honor Schächter and all those who were imprisoned in Terezin. In a former warehouse – where Nazi commandants once worked Jewish prisoners to their deaths – more than 160 young American singers and instrumentalists, along with an orchestra from Prague, gathered to perform Maestro Sidlin’s concert drama The Defiant Requiem. To capture this extraordinary moment, producer Peter Schnall and Partisan Pictures filmed the historic concert with an international crew. Schnall and director/writer Doug Shultz used this powerful and moving performance to re-tell the story of Schächter, his chorus and Terezin.

For Schnall, his journey to this former Nazi concentration camp became more than just another filmic experience. During production, he learned, for the first time, that his own great-grandmother had died while imprisoned within the walls of Terezin.

Eagles Soar (If They Do Say So Themselves)

------

Eagles Doc on DVD

The Eagles

Capitol Records has acquired the exclusive DVD/Blu-ray rights to History of the Eagles, the iconic band’s acclaimed documentary, which is set for release on Tuesday, April 30.   This exceptional three-disc set includes History of the Eagles Part One and History of the Eagles Part Two, as well as Eagles Live At The Capital Centre - March 1977, featuring never-before-released performances from the Eagles’ two-night stand at Washington, D.C.’s Capital Center during the legendary Hotel California tour.

History of the Eagles will be released in both DVD and Blu-ray three-disc configurations – all with 5.1 Surround Sound and Stereo audio – beautifully packaged in a six-panel digipak with accompanying photographic booklet.  A Super Deluxe Box Set will be released as a limited edition, complete with three Blu-ray discs; a 40-page casebound book featuring still photos from the films; 10 archival-quality photographs of the band from throughout its storied history; and a specially created lithograph of the band’s desert-bleached skull icon.  All elements in this limited edition deluxe set will be packaged in a specially designed foil-stamped and embossed box, with a Native American blanket-inspired liner, beautifully wrapped in a leather tie, and fastened with a bone button.

All three versions of History of the Eagles will be available for preorder beginning today, March 12 through Amazon.com and the Eagles website (http://eaglesband.com).

Seeking to provide an unprecedented and intimate look into the history of the band and the legacy of its music, the Eagles partnered with Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) to produce the film.  Directed by Alison Ellwood (Magic Trip: Ken Kesey’s Search for a Kool Place), History of the Eagles is a meticulous creation featuring rare archival material, concert footage, and never-before-seen home movies that explore the evolution and enduring popularity of one of the world’s biggest-selling and culturally significant American bands.

History of the Eagles made its television broadcast debut on Showtime last month, earning the network its highest ratings for a music documentary in eight years.  Part One premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January to great acclaim.

History of the Eagles Part One dedicates two hours to the chronicling of the band’s creation and rise to fame in the 1970’s through its breakup in 1980.  More than 25 new and exclusive interviews were conducted with all current band members -- Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit - as well as former members Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner and Don Felder.  Also featured are new and exclusive interviews with Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Kenny Rogers, Irving Azoff and many other seminal artists and band contemporaries who have been closely involved with the Eagles’ history.

While personal stories from band members, managers, and music industry luminaries frame the narrative, it’s the unexpected moments—recording sessions, backstage interactions, and even a whimsical sequence from the Desperado cover shoot—that convey the extraordinary bond linking the artists, their music, and the times (an era when country-tinged rock and finely-honed harmonies spoke to a nation still reeling from unrest).

Additionally, the documentary features previously unreleased home movies and archival footage.  Personal photos, video and memorabilia amassed by the Eagles over the course of their career will also be seen for the very first time.

History of the Eagles Part Two reveals the personal and professional struggles members faced while the band was apart, and chronicles the group’s dramatic reunion in 1994, as well as its resurgence in recording and performing throughout the next two decades.  Among the band’s many achievements since reforming are its triumphant Hell Freezes Over tour, the 2007 release of Long Road Out of Eden (which sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide and earned two GRAMMY® Awards), and its ongoing ascendance as an international supergroup.

Eagles Live at the Capital Centre - March 1977 features previously unreleased concert performances of “Hotel California,” “New Kid In Town,” “Take It To The Limit,” “One Of These Nights,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Rocky Mountain Way,” “Best Of My Love” and “Take It Easy,” all captured during the band’s two-night stand in Washington, D.C. during its historic Hotel Californiaworld tour.

Directed by Alison Ellwood and produced by Alex Gibney, History of the Eagles was created with a select crew of filmmakers including: Blair Foster, Executive Producer; Alison Ellwood and Ben Sozanski, Editors; Karim Karmi, Co-Producer; and Erin Edeiken, Line Producer.

The Eagles have sold more than 120 million albums worldwide, earned five No. 1 U.S. singles and six GRAMMY® Awards.  Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is the best-selling album of all time, exceeding sales of 29 million units.  The band’s Hotel California and Eagles Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 have sold more than 16 million and 11 million albums, respectively.  The Eagles were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.  For more information, visit the band’s website atwww.eaglesband.com

NYC's Summer Mega Concert

Guns N' Roses added to
Annual NYC Governor's
Ball Concert

Three days of music, art and entertainment
Friday, 7 June to Sunday, 9 June in NYC

Founders Entertainment added of Guns N' Roses as the third headliner for the 2013 Governors Ball Music Festival. "We're stoked to be performing at the Governors Ball!" says Axl Rose, "we're all really excited in GNR to be part of this festival, and with such talented and diverse acts in what looks to be a great weekend!!" The 3rd annual edition of New York City's marquee live music event will be held Friday June 7th through Sunday June 9th in Randall's Island Park and feature over 60 world class performers, showcasing a wide spectrum of Dance, Indie Rock, Hip Hop, Americana, Electronica and Pop all weekend long.

With its expansion to 3 days of Music, Art, and Entertainment, and an impressive list of talented performers, The Governors Ball Music Festival drew considerable attention upon the announcement of the 2013 lineup, described by Spin as "stacked," and Consequence of Sound as "insane" to name just a few of the excited declarations made in regards to this years festival. Within five minutes of tickets going on sale on Friday, January 25th, both Early Bird and Advanced priced tickets had sold out.

3-Day Regular Price GA Tickets and VIP packages are on sale now at GovBall.com

Along with expanded programming in 2013, Founders Entertainment will unveil a new festival site layout to the grounds at Randall's Island Park, giving music fans extra space to spread out and fully enjoy the amazing performances and art installations. Governors Ball 2013 will also build upon the collection of highly regarded NYC food-trucks and restaurants providing culinary delights at this years event. 2013 will included favorites from last year like Luke's Lobster, Cool Haus ice cream, Asia Dog, Ports Coffee & Tea, and Pie For The People, as well as new additions including Brindle Room, Mexicue, Bare Burger, Little Muenster grilled cheese, Num Pang sandwich shop, Wooly's, and La Sonrisa empanadas among other vendors to be announced.

As in years past the Governors Ball grounds will feature an array of fun activities including a silent disco, ping-pong, lawn games, a life sized game of Connect 4, and more. After working up a sweat dancing to a favorite band or competing in an intense game of ping-pong, attendees will be able to help themselves to one of the 8 free water refill stations on the grounds. The stations will feature state of the art filtration systems (including ultraviolet sterilization), bringing music fans refreshing and great tasting drinking water free of charge, so they can keep hydrated while at the same time reducing the amount of plastic bottles used at the event.

Mimic This Makeup

BeansTalk's Favorite Make-Up Artist
Nick Barose Offers Up Tips & Secrets

Here's what Nick tells us about Ashley Simpson's different looks:

Look 1, 90's supermodel Chic , We went with strong arch dark brows with matte everything from matte brown smoky eyes ( Estee Lauder 5 Colours Eyeshadows in Bronze Dunes)  to matte nude lips with 90's essentials Mac lip pencil in Spice, remember those? all the cool sexy people used to line their lips with it.
Look 2, Orange lips with Bronze smoky eyes " Orange is in interesting colour for lips, ( MAC Lipstick in Morange ) it's less expected than red and definitely more youthful and fun, a good way to look glam but quirky with out being too formal " Red Carpet-y"  Pair it with shimmery coppery bronze smoky eyes. ( Chanel Duo Eyeshadows in 37 Sables)

Look 3 , Rockstar eyes with glued on jewels ( you can't really see here but in the hi-res pic you can see we glued rhinestones to her inner corners of eyes, ) ( Sephora Jumbo 12 Hrs Liner in Brown)
" A dark smoky eyes can look too serious sometimes so by funking it up with rhinestones, it add a fun rock star elements to it"

Look 4, Blonde Ambition, I'm obsessed with the combo of deep red lips  ( Armani Lip Maestro in 402, Tibetan Red ) with strong brows  ( RAMY Perfect Brow wand ) and those high braided bun by hairdresser Joshua-Myles Ristaino, it's our modern interpretation of the Madonna Blonde Ambition tour look!

Look 5, Icy blue smoky eyes " By dabbing a hint of pastel mint blue in the inner corners of her grey smoky eyes, it's a subtle way to match your make up to your dress " she was wearing minty blue dress so I want to tie it together but with out being too matchy matchy by adding a bit of pale minty blue liner in inner corners ( Hard Candy Take Me Out Liner in Chop Suey) .." pair it with pastel-y peachy gloss ( Mac Archie 's Girl Lipglass in Summer Sweetheart)
