Flat Out
Little foldable Ballet Flats have made a huge comeback -- we remember our grandmother had a couple pair. They're terrific for traveling and many find them easy to carry in a purse for comfort convenience. However, we hadn't found a brand to suit us. A couple of years ago, Nine West made a big push and sold their ballet flats in a leather drawstring carrying case. Adorable, but frightfully uncomfortable (at least for us) -- they were also notoriously inconsistent and ultimately not terribly well made (and we are fans of Nine West!).
A couple of months ago, we finally discovered a pair of ballet flats that we could wear on our delicate, sensitive feet -- made by Switchflop queen, Lindsay Phillips.
Lindsay Phillips Ballet Flats
(seen above)
We discovered these amazing little gems at the Manhattan Beach Fresh Produce shop. We were skeptical because we nearly always wear some sort of sandal, finding closed shoes not too comfortable. Imagine our surprise when we tried them on and they were genuinely, sincerely comfortable. But, even at $65, they were a little pricey for us. Still, we managed to find some online at a great price. Do a little research and you may get a similar deal (Ebay is a good resource).
The "gimmick" of the Lindsay Phillips Ballet Flat is that they are part of the line's trademarked "Snap Ons." This means that the flower with rhinestone center that comes "standard" on the shoes can snap on and off and you can interchange with a variety of choices, ranging in price, generally, from $11 to $18.
We're not so keen on the change-y thing, but do adore the shoes and find them fantastic to wear, nearly all the time. The matte shoes are real leather, but the patent styles are man made. Both constructs are comfortable, but for the ultimate, we have to give the edge to the buttery soft authentic leather. The Lindsay Phillips Ballet Flats feature an air-soft foot padding and are edged in soft, comfortable, flexible material, rendering the shoes far more comfortable than any other we've sampled.
So far, we have them in Pewter Patent, Blue Patent, Black Patent (we actually got the Kids' Size 4, which is supposed to be comparable to a Women's Size 6, but is on the small side -- Lindsay Phillips Ballet Flats do run on the small side -- like the ultimate, but exorbitantly priced Lanvin Ballet Flat -- so you're likely to need at least a half-size larger than you normally wear -- we find the Size 6 perfect for our usually Size 5.5 feet), Bronze Leather and White Gold Leather. www.lindsayphillips.com
Yosi Samra Ballet Flats
BeansTalk has yet to try them, but we got a good deal and have some on order. We'll report on this later: Yosi Samra is part of the collection of shoes produced by the line’s parent company, J. Loren. The Samra family has been designing and manufacturing an array of footwear for 30 years. Yosi, born in 1982, is the first son born to his shoe designing father Jacob Samra. At 20 Yosi left school to participate full time in the family business. He wanted to broaden the company to satisfy consumer demands for fashionable, comfortable footwear. The signature shoe of the line are foldable ballet flats and a psuedo-styled gladiator sandal. www.yosisamra.com

Lex Luthor Lives:
Smallville Finale
Michael Rosenbaum reprises his role as Lex Luthor in the series finale of Smallville on Friday, May 13, 2011 (8:00-10:00 p.m. ET.).
“I’m delighted to return for the series finale,” says Rosenbaum. “I’m simply doing it for all of the fans out there who made Smallville the great success it is. I appreciate all of their passion, their relentlessness and even their threats. Ha ha. I can’t wait to hug the old crew back in Vancouver one last time and see all of my old friends once again. Oh, and for Lex to become the badass he’s destined to be.”
Executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders added, “It feels like the stars are aligning, literally. We couldn’t be more excited about having Michael back. And as far as the way he returns, there’ll be no doubt about how Lex becomes the great rival in Clark Kent’s life. He is the villain of the story.”
Rosenbaum exited at the end of season seven after Lex confronted Clark (Tom Welling) in the Fortress of Solitude. Years of secrets came to a head as Clark’s former friend finally discovered the truth about Clark’s alien heritage. The rivalry between the two culminated into a final showdown and crumbled, literally, under an icy avalanche as the Fortress fell. Lex’s body was never found. Now, Lex has risen from the ashes to fulfill his place in destiny as Clark Kent’s greatest nemesis.
Smallville was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Shanghai Noon,” “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”), based on the DC Comics characters. Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson serve as executive producers, along with James Marshall, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins, Joe Davola and Tom Welling. The series is produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions, Millar/Gough Ink and Warner Bros. Television. SUPERMAN was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

History to Commemorate Civil War's 150th
HISTORY® is set to launch a four-year initiative to both honor and commemorate the Civil War, which marks its 150th anniversary in 2011, starting with a weeklong programming event, fully integrated across all platforms.
HISTORY will launch a national educational campaign tied to the Civil War which will serve educational institutions for generations to come. A two-hour feature has begun production, Gettysburg, to be Executive Produced by the Scott brothers, Tony (Unstoppable; Man on Fire; Top Gun) and Ridley (Gladiator; Black Hawk Down; American Gangster).
“The Civil War is arguably one of the most critical events in our nation’s history, and one to which HISTORY has been dedicated since our inception. Our four-year commitment to the Civil War, highlighting the 150th anniversary and the key battles and people who fought during that conflict, underscore our deep devotion to the genre – it is a pledge we are making to our country, to our viewers and to every school in America,” said Nancy Dubuc, president and general manager, History. “To kick off this epic programming event, I can think of no better and more amazing, awe inspiring story-tellers than Tony and Ridley Scott. They will bring the raw courage of all who fought in Gettysburg to light.”
“HISTORY is the perfect partner for us to tell the epic true story of Gettysburg. We are excited to bring this battle to audiences in a powerful new way,” said Scott Free, principal Ridley Scott.
Gettysburg will strip away the romanticized veneer of the Civil War and present the engagement in a new light: a visceral, terrifying experience with everything on the line. At its core, this is the story of the soldiers on the ground, not the generals who commanded from behind the front lines. Compelling CGI and powerful action footage place viewers in the midst of the fighting, delivering both an emotional cinematic experience and an information packed look at the turning points, technology, and little known facts of perhaps America’s greatest battle.
Gettysburg will launch a week long programming event on HISTORY, including special Civil War themed episodes of Pawn Stars, American Pickers and other specials throughout the week, details of which to be unveiled over the coming months. As well, the network will also premiere a two-hour special, Lee & Grant.
Produced with the cooperation of leading Civil War historian Winston Groom, author of Forrest Gump, Lee & Grant is a personal look at two iconic leaders of the Civil War. Surprising details reveal the bold choices and almost godlike power Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee summoned on decisive battlefields like Vicksburg and Gettysburg that, within days of each other, turned the tide of the war. As part of HISTORY’s Civil War Week, this special features a unique perspective, exploring how these men changed the course of American history.
National advertisers Bank of America, Ram, and GEICO have signed on to sponsor the week-long event.
Gettysburg is being produced for HISTORY by executive producers Tony and Ridley Scott as well as Mary Lisio; Showrunner is Ben Fox. Director is Adrian Moat; Writer is Richard Bedser; Graphics produced by Stargate Studios; HISTORY Executive Producers are David McKillop, Mary Donahue and Julian P. Hobbs.

Smallville Ends
The CW airs the series finale of Smallville as a two-hour television event on Friday, May 13, 2011, from 8 to 10 p.m.
The story of a young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and his journey to become the Man of Steel has captivated audiences for a decade. Taking on Darkseid and battling the darkest of his demons, this two-hour event will send Clark soaring towards his birthright to secure his place in history as the world’s greatest protector.
“Paying homage to 10 seasons is no small task, and wrapping up each character and story arc has been extremely important to everyone involved in the show,” said executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders. “We’re excited to be able to make the final moments of Smallville a television event, as the character we’ve grown up with makes his legendary transformation.”
Supernatural will be pre-empted on May 13, 2011, return swith a two-hour season finale on Friday, May 20, 2011, from 8 to 10 p.m.

Federic Fekkai’s Adir Abergel created a 1960’s hair style that was sexy and full of texture for Kristen Stewart's look at the People's Choice Awards.
Get the Look: Abergel started by applying the Fekkai Advanced Full Blown Volume Styling Whip throughout the hair. He roughly blow dried her hair with his hands until it was almost dry. Using a round brush, Abergel blow dried the rest of the hair straight, so that the hair was smooth and soft. He then curled the hair using a 1 ¼ inch curling iron, and combined the Fekkai Coiff Ocèanique Tousled Wave Spray with Fekkai Advanced Brilliant Glossing Cream to create the full and sexy texture that would last through the night.

True Grit Star's Award-Show Look
Hailee Steinfeld's SAG
Awards Red Carpet Look
For the Screen Actors Guild Award, Hailee Steinfeld chose a Prada orange, pink and black gown. Stephen Sollitto of Anastasia Beverly Hills wanted the make up to be complimentary to her dress as well as age appropriate.
HAILEE’S EYES & LASHES
For the base of the lid, Sollitto used the deep purple shade from the ILLUMIN8 with YOUTHFUL SYNERGY™ COMPLEX EYE SHADOW PALETTE #4, blending on the eyelid as well as from the crease to the brow as a highlight. Sollitto explains, “This palette is phenomenal, the colors are great and so many to choose from.”
Then she blended the soft pink accent shade 4 from ILLUMIN8 with YOUTHFUL SYNERGY™ COMPLEX EYE SHADOW PALETTE #1 on the crease as well as blending up and outward all the way to the eyebrow on the outer edges. Treat eyelashes as you do your hair. You want to round-brush Lash Lifting Mascara into the root of your upper and lower lashes for definition.
HAILEE’S BROWS
To define brows begin with sketching in Brow Wiz (Hailee used Medium Ash) over brows using light upward strokes, filling in brows completely, as if you were drawing little hairs. Then use the wand brush on the other end of Brow Wiz to blend the brow color through. This will soften the product and create a natural effect. He also used the Brow Definer to precisely fill and define.
To highlight the brow bone apply Brow Duality (Hailee used Camille/ Sand) highlighter pencil on the brow bone starting above the iris to the end of the brow and blend using the fingertip. To ensure longevity brush Clear Brow Gel in short upward
HAILEE’S LIPS & CHEEKS
Using the amazing wand, swipe HydraFull Gloss in Barely, across the lips.
Using your ring finger gently tap the crème cheek color from the Highlighting Crème Duo (Hailee used St Aspen) to apples of cheeks, blending to hairline. For a radiant cheekbones, apply a small amount of the liquid highlighter along the cheekbones and blend on to your shoulders too!
