Princess Grace & Princess Kate

A Grace-ful Inspiration

As others have already noticed, Catherine Middleton's wedding dress, designed by Sarah Burton, the creative director of Alexander McQueen, resembles another famous royal wedding gown: Grace Kelly's. Kelly's iconic wedding dress, which she wore when she married Monaco's Prince Rainier in April, 1956, was designed by MGM costume designer Helen Rose, whose house (which she also designed) is only a few doors away, around the corner from BeansTalk's.

From Here to Eternity:
Ernest Borgnine

By Amanda Bellafiore
BeansTalk Special Correspondent

In celebration of the TMC Classic Film Festival hitting Hollywood April 28, TMC’s Road to Hollywood Tour arrived at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles on Friday with a screening of 1953 classic, From Here to Eternity.

Among the crowded theater at least half of the audience admitted to host, Ben Mankiewicz, to never having seen the movie before; but judging by the loud standing ovation Oscar-winner Ernest Borgnine received upon his entrance, it was clear why they were present.

At 94 years old, Borgnine has every ounce of wit and energy in tact as he recalls the finest moments of his career, starting with the day he stepped home after serving 10 years in the Navy during World War II.  After searching for a job with no avail he questioned going back into service when his mother said, “Tell me, have you ever thought of becoming an actor? Because you always like to make a damn fool of yourself.” Ten years later, he won his first Oscar.

His first break came in 1951 when he was cast in The Mob, with Broderick Crawford. It was here when he was approached by Columbia Pictures and offered a contract. During the two years it took for Columbia to find him a role, he read the novel From Here to Eternity and said, “Knowing there’s a God above, I’m going to play Sgt. ‘Fatso’ Judson.” Days later the phone rang, it was Columbia, and they wanted him for the part of Fatso Judson.

“I nearly dropped dead,” said Borgnine. “The rest is history.”

Since then he has kept an active and lucrative career in Hollywood. His most recent work can be heard in SpongeBob SquarePants, with his reoccurring role as Mermaid Man.

“You think it’s a piece of cake, this road to Hollywood,” says Borgnine. “Don’t kid yourself, it’s one of the hardest roads you’ll ever walk on.”

Katy Perry Adds Tour Dates

More Katy Perry

Katy Perry has announced a series of brand-new U.S. dates on her California Dreams 2011 World Tour sponsored by Shick Quattro for Women ®. The new shows commence on September 7, 2011 following on the heels of the summer North American leg of the tour, which kicks off Stateside on June 7th in Atlanta and runs through August 14th with two shows in Katy’s Santa Barbara hometown. Katy just wrapped sold-out dates in the U.K. before heading to sold-out shows in Australia, New Zealand and Japan in May. North American dates feature a rotating group of openers, including Robyn, Janelle Monáe, and Marina & The Diamonds. DJ Skeet Skeet performs on all dates.

Throughout the California Dreams Tour, Katy has been interacting with fans through social media networks. Concertgoers have been able to check in to venues using Facebook Places and Deals to receive special treats, as well as submit their Tweets via the “Tweet-to-Screen,” powered by social curation start-up Mass Relevance — giant on-stage screens that welcome fans to each show and display live fan photos and tweets (via dedicated show hashtags), giving everyone in the audience the chance to share their thoughts, excitement, and anticipation before Katy hits the stage. A mini-version of the “Tweet-to-Screen” will also appear on Katy’s tour diary (http://www.katyperry.com/tour-diary) to allow any fan anywhere in the world to participate in the excitement.

In addition, Katy has partnered with Tickets-for-Charity to offer special access to some of the best seats in the house on the California Dreams Tour. A portion of the proceeds from each purchase will benefit three charities that Katy has selected: Generosity Water, The Humane Society of the United States, and the Children’s Health Fund. To date, her fans have raised over $100,000 in charitable donations. A limited number of premium seats benefiting these great causes are available now for select tour dates on www.ticketsforcharity.com. Katy is also inviting local Red Cross representatives to her UK shows to collect donations and is donating the proceeds from a light wand sold at the shows to the Red Cross, raising over $20,000 to benefit those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

In other Katy news, “E.T.,” the fourth single off Katy’s Grammy-nominated album Teenage Dream, today ascends to the top position on Billboard's Pop Songs chart, becoming just the third album in the 18-year history of the chart to yield a quartet of No. 1s. The song follows "California Gurls," featuring Snoop Dogg, the title cut and "Firework" to the top of the Nielsen BDS-based mainstream top 40 radio airplay ranking. (When "E.T." ascended to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, where it has reigned the past three weeks, "Teenage Dream" similarly became only the ninth album to produce four No. 1s in the chart's 52-year archives). The epic sci-fi music video for “E.T.,” directed by Floria Sigismondi and featuring Kanye West, premiered two weeks ago and has over 24 million views: http://www.vevo.com/watch/katy-perry/et/USCA31100006.

Little Dorrit

Downton Abbey

Sherlock

Cranford

Pride and Prejudice (1995)

PBS Numbers Up

PBS Masterpiece audience has increased by nearly 45% over last year.[1] In addition, PBS’ most anticipated highlight of Masterpiece’s 40th season, “Upstairs Downstairs,” was watched by an estimated 6.4 million viewers,[2] based on Nielsen data from 53 metered markets.

“With the most famous address in Masterpiece’s history, PBS couldn’t wait to bring the next story from 165 Eaton Place back to viewers, and it’s great to see millions of PBS fans turn out for its premiere,” said John F. Wilson, PBS SVP and Chief Programming Officer. “MASTERPIECE is a vital hallmark of what makes PBS member stations unique in the media landscape, and everyone should continue to have access to these classic tales.”

More than three decades after its last episode on PBS, Sunday night’s episode, now available on PBS.org/video, opened in 1936, six years after the Bellamy family moved out of 165 Eaton Place at the end of the original series. Recently inherited by young Sir Hallam Holland, the house has been long vacant, and Hallam’s vivacious wife, Agnes, takes its considerable needs in hand. The film airs in three one-hour episodes on MASTERPIECE Classic, Sundays, April 10, 17, and 24, 2011, at 9 pm ET on PBS (check local listings).

“We knew viewers would appreciate this charming, romantic ‘not-to-be-missed’ 2011 version, and we hope that audiences continue to grow throughout this successful season,” says WGBH Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton. “From ‘Sherlock’ to ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Upstairs Downstairs,’ we’re proud that Masterpiece continues to bring such high-quality, first-rate, award-winning dramas to the small screen.”

The cast includes the original series creators Dame Eileen Atkins (“Cranford,” “Murder on the Orient Express”) and Jean Marsh (“Sense and Sensibility,” “Willow”), with Marsh reprising her Emmy Award-winning role as Rose Buck, now promoted from parlor maid to housekeeper, and Atkins appearing as the aristocratic Lady Maud. With a script by acclaimed screenwriter Heidi Thomas (“Cranford”), the sequel also stars Keeley Hawes (“Wives and Daughters”), Ed Stoppard (“Brideshead Revisited”), Anne Reid (“Bleak House”), Claire Foy (“Little Dorrit”), Adrian Scarborough (“Cranford”), Art Malik (“The Jewel in the Crown”), and Ellie Kendrick (“The Diary of Anne Frank”). “Upstairs Downstairs” is a coproduction of the BBC and MASTERPIECE on PBS.

Special note: Masterpiece Madness, a 3-week tournament bracket on PBS’ Facebook page, pitting 40 classic Masterpiece characters against each other in daily matches, ends today with a “Pride & Prejudice” faceoff between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Results will be posted at www.facebook.com/pbs.

British Royal Weddings
Of The 20th Century

Major Royal Weddings of the Twentieth Century

Throughout the twentieth century, Royal Weddings were events of majestic splendour. People would camp out overnight in the streets of London to get a prime location for the procession the next day. They would gather in their thousands to garner a glimpse of the newly married couple on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Street parties were held up and down the country in celebration - the extravagance, the splendour, the sheer pomp and pageantry all combined to make for extraordinary scenes of patriotic pride and national unity.

This collection features footage of all the major Royal Weddings of the Twentieth Century, just as the cinema audiences of the time experienced them. This is a comprehensive and nostalgic look back at some of the most memorable and extraordinary days, in not just royal history, but in the history of Britain.
