Love London
Sweet Treats

Trust us: the food in England is not bad, despite that nasty stereotyping. On our last trip, in 1993 we had one bad meal, and it was at a restaurant that we have here: The Hard Rock Café (we had John Lennon’s alleged favorite, The Pig Sandwich; it was heinous).

We’re pleased we can say the same thing about this trip: save for one horrible (the first night, microwaved frozen fish and chips that cost $13) meal, we loved just about every meal and snack we ate.

By now, you know that BeansTalk was a bit felled by how expensive everything in London was (given the very deflated dollar). Luckily, a lovely foodstuff we discovered in the first days of our recent trip earlier this month was shockingly affordable: Mr. Kipling’s Cakes.

We bought our first Mr. Kipling (French Fancies; which were eight little petit fours) at the London equivalent of a 7-11. We assumed and put it into the category of a Hostess/Dolly Madison kind of thing. Ah, but we were wrong. The French Fancies, and the later discovered Mini Battenberg cakes were delightful, very good and the quality and freshness were surprisingly yummy.

The closest thing we can equate it to are the kind of treats you buy at Gelson’s Bakery or a fancy indie bakery. They’re like little princess cakes.

The Battenberg Cake (which apparently comes in a whole cake, too) is a checkered sponge cake (pink and white), with a thin layer of apricot jam and wrapped in an almond frosting. God, they are good.

Information can be found at www.mrkipling.co.uk, but here’s the good news. We found them available to those of us now across the pond, at several on-line sites, many British Food sites, but excitingly enough, at www.amazon.com/gourmet.

Kidman’s Baggage

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban flew to Australia earlier this week to spend Easter with her family. She will also be staying in Australia for the next ten months to film the Baz Luhrmann's new epic "Australia."

To prep for her long stay, Nicole lugged eight pieces of luggage on the plane, three of which were almost $2000.00 worth of her favorite Bric's luggage pieces -- an olive 28" rolling duffle ($560), an olive carry-on suitcase ($580) and an olive oversized 30" suitcase ($820).

Flawless Finish: Dermacia Skincare

by Andrea Goodwin, associate editor (agoodwin@beanstalkbiz.com)

From the BeansTalk confessional: When we were younger we never wore foundation of any kind. We thought it was for old ladies. At age 20, we thought that the perfect glow and finish could only be achieved by spending the day at the beach and drinking in the sun’s rays. Boy, are we paying for that now. We have damaged skin that we fear is actually turning into hide around our décolletage area. It is uneven and needs help.

We like the Dermacia skin care line. We recently were able to try the foundations, cleansers and toner, and liked them quite a bit. What is cool about the foundations is that they are typically sold as a pair. This staffer received a duo of “Beige” and “Mocha.” We immediately thought that we would be passing along the “Mocha” to some friends, but ultimately experimented with it to even out some skin patches which have been (off all things) losing pigment. (the horror!) (Geeezz. I never thought I would be doing this….) Anyway, they gave a very nice finish and coverage. The pleasingly creamy texture of the make-up was nicely controlled by the little pump as well.

From their website: Dermacia Foundations are recommended by doctor's and demanded by celebrities, Dermacia Breathable Foundation has found a permanent home in the kits of Hollywood's leading makeup artists for one reason: Dermacia's breathable, gel-based formula smoothes on beautifully to give you that flawless, glowing complexion you've always wanted without compromising the health of your skin. Developed under the guidance of trained physicians, Dermacia was previously available only through licensed dermatologists and estheticians. Dermacia Breathable Foundation provides complete coverage to disguise existing blemishes, acne scars, redness and discoloration without looking cakey or over-done. And unlike traditional oil, crème, and water-based cosmetics, Dermacia's exclusive, gel-based formula allows air and moisture to pass through to your skin, keeping your complexion looking natural and flawless all day long. Plus, Dermacia is the only foundation with Lycogel Complex, a patent-pending formulation proven to help your skin breathe by dramatically increasing the amount of oxygen it can absorb. By increasing oxygen at the cellular level, Dermacia helps restore the youthful glow and appearance of health skin with every application. (2.5 oz)

Swoosh: The Fast Train
To Gay Paree

By BeansTalk’s ME

By now, BeanStalk readers know that the managing editor, chairman of the board and a staffer spent spring break across the pond. We could wax rhapsodic about our trip, but that’s for another story. Right now, we’re going to tell you a tale that will likely encite envy in many: we took a day trip to Paris.

Prices on the Eurostar, which leaves from London Waterloo Station and journeys 2 hrs. and 50 mins, to Gard du Nord in Paris, vary greatly, depending on the time you leave and the “class” of ticket. It also depends on how far in advance you order/purchase your tickets. We got, apparently, an extraordinary deal, of only $94 roundtrip. We couldn’t find a similar rate there or now. Roundtrip rates for a single traveler range between $102 (very hard to find) to $800, with the average somewhere in the middle.

Since we were spending only a day there, we left as early as we thought we could stand (especially since we had to be at Waterloo an hour before departure, which was 6:32 a.m., meaning we had to get to Waterloo at 5:30 a.m.). We returned to London on the last train out, which left around 8:40 p.m.

In some ways it seems like you can barely touch the surface, but for our purpose and intentions, it worked very well. We wasted an hour trying to change our return trip to an earlier time, but eventually got on our pre-purchased “L’Open Tour” – which we would not recommend. It featured frequent – but unnecessarily long – stops throughout Paris and also had only an audio commentary, which was hard to follow and never seemed to sync up with the actual sites. If we were to do another, we would choose a tour with a live tour guide (we had one in London and it was superior).

We stayed (freezing) on the open top deck of the tour bus, but did hop out at L’Tour Effiel. We cannot even tell you how long the lines were, but we’ll show you – look at our photo. Those lines were for not only the single working lift (elevator), but for the stairs. Prices vary depending on what level of the tower you want to reach.

Food was fantastic. We stopped for lunch at a little chain patisserie and sandwich shop, on a little street off a main drag. We ate dinner at another chain, right outside of Gard Du Nord, Hippopotamus. We had a lovely dinner of steak and chips (fries for you Americans) and a glass of French Burgundy wine. Yum.

As for the train ride, the three of us were inadvertently bumped up from steerage to a quartet of seats facing each other, a table in between. It was lovely and comfortable. The ride seemed to speed by. There is nothing to see on the evening trip, and if you go on the earliest excursion, you won’t see much either, but we were able to see quite a bit of the countryside of England (including the land of the ancestry of my two companions, Canterbury, Kent).

If you can arrange to spend a night or –obviously-- more in Paris, that would certainly give you more time to explore and experience the history of the gorgeous city (despite the occasional snobbery and mockery we encountered).

Consider the Eurostar. It’s such an un-American (in a good way!) and engaging way to travel.

Anthea Turner creates domestic goddesses out of hopeless housewives

Anthea Turner is the perfect housewife and the ultimate domestic goddess and she is setting out to try and re-educate the nation's self-confessed incompetent homemakers in a new series, Perfect Housewives (working title), produced for BBC THREE by RDF Media.

In her stunning home, nothing is out of place and everything is perfectly organised. Every towel is artfully folded and every shoebox is clearly labelled. Anthea believes there is never an excuse for a chaotically-run house.

"I passionately believe in the word home and the part it plays in our lives. It's cool to have a well-run, comfortable and inviting home," says Anthea.

Each week on this light-hearted new show, Anthea will mentor two hopeless housewives. They will visit Anthea's home for an intensive housewifery course, in which they are trained how to be a domestic goddess – Anthea style.

The two women will then return to their homes with their new-found knowledge, to compete as this week's Best Housewife.

At the end of the show, not only will the women's homes be scrutinised by Anthea, but each housewife must host an event of their choice and everything must look like it has come straight out of Desperate Housewives' Wisteria Lane.

Whether they choose a cocktail, dinner or children's party, it will be a huge challenge for our housewives who know that unless their homes come straight from the pages of a glossy magazine and their parties are perfection, all their hard work will have been for nothing.

There will be no excuses allowed: the housewives have to make running their house their top priority and each week Anthea will crown one of them as the Best Housewife.

Can Anthea help these women host the perfect party? Will Anthea's own domestic standards be far too high for these housewives to match?

Whatever the outcome, it's going to be a tough challenge to turn these struggling housewives into faultless domestic goddesses.

Perfect Housewives premieres Wednesday, May 2, 9 p.m. ET/PT on BBC America

Squares and Stars

The hottest Fall accessory trends take shape

The circle trend has gone round and round. Fall fashions have us saying goodbye to large opulent circle pendants, small delicate circles, and every variation of hoops in between. From the angular, clean lines of the square, to contemporary interpretations of the star, fall accessories are boldly geometric – and it’s about time.

With spring and fall runway fashions evoking a bold 80s-esque feel, the edgy, geometric angles are the perfect complement.

Hip to be SQUARE: Squares are the accessory for fall from David Lundahl & Company. Square pendants are showing tremendous variety, from tribal amulet styles to chic diamond pave patterns the modern geometrics are spectacular statement pieces. The David Lundahl online boutique features a wealth of fine jewelry and accessories. The boutique features collections that evoke a common theme, contemporary elegance. www.DavidLundahl.com.

England, Part 2

London Fashion Report: What They Really Wear

Five days a week, we drive down Highland Blvd. west on our way home. During that journey we pass a very heavily Hassidic area. That means on Friday there are lots of walkers, lots of men dressed as what our favorite BeansTalk staffer called, as a child, “secret agents,” that is to say, traditional long black coats, hats and the requisite sideburn curls. Alright, we realize that is completely unofficial. Here is how Wikipedia describes it: They are distinguished by their dark hasidic garb, and by their pants tucked into their socks called hoyzn-zokn (not to be confused with the breeches, called halber-hoyzn, worn by some other hasidic groups). They wear a round felt hat, and a high, almost-pointed kapel. On Shabbat and Jewish holidays the married men wear the high circular shtraml (fur hat) of the Polish chasidim, sometimes called a spodik (not to be confused with the much flatter shtreimel a fur hat worn by most hasidic groups).

Oh, how we digress. In addition to the driving challenges when they are behind the wheel (oh, stop it! It is not racist and don’t claim it as such until you’ve driven the drive on a daily basis—for that matter, try going to San Gabriel and drive next to the surgical-mask wearing Asians and try and do it without commentary).

Are we ever going to get to our point? We’re trying.

Our point is that we have gotten the styling of the teenage girl and mother hassidim: flat black shoes, black tights or knee highs, skirts that are always mid-calf and never full, but never fitted – loose and straight. Tops vary, but among teens the most common is a white cotton oxford-styled shirt and a solid-colored jumper (as they say in the U.K.)/v-necked sweater (as we say in the U.S.). The mothers (usually accompanied by two for the very young to up to eight/nine children) wear similar clothing waist down. Tops are usually shapeless, dark colored, indistinctive sweaters and 80% of the time they are wearing a type of cloche hat.

(We finally reach our point) So we closely observed what women were actually wearing in London and we have come to the following conclusion: dull, dull, dull and oh, so, predictable.

Is that too mean? Then let’s just say they play it very, very safe. Just about anyone who works in any kind office wears some variation of the following:

A black or dark blue suit made of some kind of blend (everything looked polyester-y to us). The only variations are whether they’re wearing a skirt or slacks. Occasionally, the very bold will feature a very thin white pinstripe. They always wear black hose/tights (or knee-highs under pants) and their shoes are always some very traditional pump, with a mid-range heel. Marks & Spencer sells their uniform (that’s their best-selling pantsuit above, available at the store and on their website for 50 pounds). The best way to describe it dog-show fans? Think of the women trainers, but replace the requisite flat plain Aerosole styled shoe with a, yes, mid-heel pump.

Once in a while, you’ll see someone who obviously works in P.R., at an Oxford Street shop, or some related field and they’re just a little more cutting-edge. They’ll wear shoes from H & M, with swingy or pan-collared coats, also from H&M or even M&S. We’ve included a possible sample suit, above (jacket 69 pounds, skirt 45 pounds). For fun, we’ve also shown another M&S coat, a limited edition, 89 pounds. We didn’t quite see this color, but the style is similar to what we saw on the more fashion conscious.

These young-and-hips girls may wear shoes with an ankle strap (whether they should or not). They may wear more fitted dresses in colors (although always dark ones, like burgundy – you see what we mean, don’t you?), and only open up their long coats when they’ve gone out for drinks afterhours and are dishing on the train to a co-worker, the alcohol having warmed them up. H&M seems to have just the right fashionable, elegant every so tiny-ly trendy styling for this gal-on-the go, and there actually is a section suitable for them at Marks and Spencer, too.

We did notice the following: The more posh the working woman, the better-fitted her suit was, the nicer and more polished her shoes. Looking at the M&S photo the heel on this model is a bit ambitious for most of the women we saw. We saw an abundance of Clarks and a definitely more solid heel, probably a bit less high. They walk every where and a lot. It's not realistic to be wearing too high a heel.

Young girls are very trendy and the urban look is definitely leggings and flats and 80s-styled horizontal striped mini dresses with a band at the bottom, mid-thigh (This isn't what every trendy teen was wearing, but you get the idea? Think Lindsay Lohan on a weekday afternoon, strolling down Robertson Blvd., paparrazi trailing behind her). Large, large gold-tone or silver-tone earrings dangle under shag and gypsy cuts. Truly urban gals wear very colorful mismatched “active” wear. Mushy Nike/Adidas slip-on trainers in bright colors, ¾ length fitted knit capris. Big, flashy blingy sunshades (whether they need them or not) are also popular.

Very fashionable types going out for a night on the town seem to sport tailored, dressy cuffed short-shorts, tights and either high-heeled boots or shoes. Tops for the shorts are usually cotton or blended button-up black sleeved shirts. We saw this look often at night, and mercifully, it was on very fit women, who traveled in couples or packs.

We’re not going to decree the above as dead-on, but merely our intense observations. You did want to know, didn’t you??

Chu Chooses Accessories

Nikki Chu has created an accessories line for the modern woman, which she characterizes as: Fashionable. Professional. Fabulous.

Since kicking off the launch of her brand by winning the “Best in Show” award at the WWD Accessories Show at Magic, in Las Vegas, Chu’s line features handbags to laptop bags, jewelry to sunglasses, Chu’s background in interior and graphic design helped her develop the line, designed for weekday or weekend.

The Nikki Chu accessories line will officially be available to consumers in June 2007. Her products feature a signature hot pink lining and the classic “C” logo. Chu has done interior decorating for celebrities including Gabrielle Union and Tyra Banks, and has worked with brands like NIKE to create signature pieces, worn by Hilary Duff and Mischa Barton.

BeansTalk's Take: This line seems right in time for Posh Spice (aka Victoria Beckham) and her descent (or ascent?) into Los Angeles. It appears to combine urban flash and both Italian styling as well as the linear designs of that famous French designer with the initials LV. In short, the line seems very versatile (we're accessing from photos, not actual use) and would probably make a nice pop of trend for those who are more understated in their dress.

England Part 1

Welcome to the first in a series celebrating and reporting on BeansTalk’s European Adventure. Hooray for Spring Break.

First off, of course, the world of fashion!

Grand Opening: BeansTalk Is There

Primark, Part 1

One of the most disconcerting and disappointing aspects to our recent visit to London was the tremendous devaluation of the dollar, which is worth – seriously – less than half of the English pound!

So every time we’d see something, we’d have to check the price and double it. Considering things were comparably priced, there was little to induce us to buy.

Since we have an H&M at the Beverly Center, with one opening right next door to our day job soon, we skipped over it, on our Thursday 5 April 2007 jaunt down Oxford Street. Known as one of the most popular shopping venues in the world, with 300 shops, it’s laden with chain stores like Gap Kids (we counted three on our walk to our destination), Urban Outfitters (since we can barely afford it here, we skipped right past, even though we love it), The Body Shop, French Connection, Esprit, Laura Ashley, Zara and many more. Given the crowds, we avoided anything that could be found in our beloved Los Angeles.

Despite being a Thursday evening, the street was packed with people, as were the stores – the most popular venues appeared to be Top Shop, H&M, Miss Selfridges, John Lewis.

Primark, Part 2
(Or How We Avoided Being Trampled)

(Yes, these photos were taken the actual day we were there, at the Oxford Primark)

Spurred on by the top recommendation of our dear British friends who we’d just lunched with, armed with determination we searched for the elusive, and new to Oxford Street, Primark. A consortium-owned store (Ireland and Spain), they’re opening all over Europe and certainly all over England. In Ireland, where new shops are also opening, they’re called Penneys, although we doubt they are related to that long-standing but faded American department store.

Even though we got there after 8 p.m., there was still a queue to get into the 70,000 sq. foot store, and we later found out (it was on the front page of the London Times) that there was a huge cue to get in that started at midnight, and that there was a bit of a push (translate people crowding, crushing and some falling over) to get in.

Apparently, despite a security staff of 50, 3,000 people waiting to get in pushed their way in. Some shoppers waited two hours just to get in. We congratulated ourselves for being “smart” enough to wait until it was much later in the evening. Apparently, there were no special deals (as some of the consumers apparently thought) and shoppers could’ve hopped onto the tube or bus to get to another London Primark and gotten the exact same deals. But it was quite a melee still by the time we walked (right) in.

Primark, Part 3

Once we realized that, we were very surprised that there was such an abundance of stock by the time we got in. Looking at Primark’s website and PR photos we noticed that there is even a photo promoting the quick re-stocking of shelves. Another disconcerting element was realizing that British sizes do not correspond to American sizes. Los Angeleans, specifically celebutantes, hover at a Size 0 and worry when they bloat to a Size 2. British sizing is not so kind at all. They’re size 10 is the equivalent to a US size 6 (which was Princess Diana’s size, btw). So it wasn’t with much joy we were pulling out and buying size 14, 16 and 18 (corresponding Euro sizes are 42, 44 and 46).

It was the only store we not only considered shopping at, but actually was excited about it. We got the above coat, albeit in a much more subdued ivory shade (replete, still, with hints of metallic). It was an astonishingly low 20 pounds, and a reasonably priced $40. We got another coat (15 pounds) with, as our traveling companion, and BeansTalk staffer, noted, “with the largest buttons ever.” It was called gray, but in our universe we would describe it as taupe. We also got a very cute black shirt top, priced at 3 pounds. We also got another black top and one in fuchsia, both were 8 pounds. We got a very cute dress we love and wore on the return home trip, for 10 pounds. We loved it. Loved it. Primark also had men’s clothing and home furnishings, too. BeansTalk’s chairman also got something he loved.

When will Primark come to the U.S.? We’ll certainly keep you posted.

Even though we realized that a high percentage of British women would be wearing the exact same things we purchased, we were comforted that wouldn’t be the case when we donned our new apparel in the U.S. (we had the misfortune to buy a top at Target, but after we saw the fourth woman wearing it, we returned it, all the more careful in the future to avoid such distinctive purchases).

If you are traveling to Europe anytime soon and would love some fast fashion at the very best price (and excellent quality, too), we’d highly recommend you make a must-stop at a Primark (or Penneys if you’re in Ireland).

The Official Word
Here’s an edited version of what their website says (we also want to point out that the surprising thing about Primark is that it does not have the feel of a Wal-Mart (Adsa in England, btw) or a K-Mart. The styling is very upscale. We don't really know the general consensus of how fashionable Brits -- is that an oxymoron? More on that later -- view Primark, but we're enamoured.)

Primark is a retail group in the value sector and operates a total of 162 stores in the UK , Spain and Ireland , where it trades under the Penneys brand. Primark employs 24, 736 people ( Republic of Ireland 3, 700, Spain 363 ).

Over the 18 months from September 2005 to March 2007, Primark will have increased its selling space by over 70% and will have opened 52 stores, including 4 in the Republic of Ireland ( Dundrum Town Centre, Swords, Mullingar and Ballina which will open on 13 th March ) and the first two in Spain (Plenilunio in Madrid and Nueva Condomina in Murcia). Both stores are trading excellently. A major store will also open in Oxford Street in the first week of April and a further 15 stores will open this year, including 3 in Spain . A number of smaller stores will have closed in this period.

There are two distribution centres – a 650, 000 sq. ft. unit at Magna Park in Leicestershire, and a 200, 000 sq. ft unit at Naas. Primark Stores Ltd., is a subsidiary of Associated British Foods. Associated British Foods is a diversified international food, ingredients and retail group with global sales of £6.0bn, and 75,000 employees in 46 countries.

Primark is a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative.

Primark is able to sell good-quality, value for money fashion for many reasons:

· we buy direct from the factories;

· we don’t run expensive advertising campaigns;

· we buy a lot of clothes – so can pass on economies of scale;

· we sell simple and classic designs which are not complicated to make;

· we only produce clothes in the most popular sizes.

Awards:

In December 2006, Primark was awarded ‘Retailer of the Year' at the Annual Awards of the British Council for Shopping Centres. In October 2006, Primark received the award for the ‘ Most Improved Store on the High Street' and runner up in the award category ‘ Best Shop in which to spend £50' in the Company Magazine High Street Awards 2006. In May 2005, it was awarded the “ GMTV High Street Fashion Award” in the “ Best Budget Fashion Section” and in November 2005 the “High Street Retailer of the Year” at the Retail Property and Development Awards 2005 .

Primark Value Proposition:

Primark targets young, fashion-conscious under 35's, offering them high quality, fashion basics at value for money prices. Almost half of sales are in Womenswear. Hot Bod

by Andrea Goodwin, associate editor (agoodwin@beanstalkbiz.com)

A toned Cameron Diaz vacationed in Oahu recently and was spotted by Papparazi lenses sporting a super smart Le Doux "lollipop" swim suit. She looks like she has emerged from her winter romance doldrums just fine! By the way, BeansTalk readers should know that we have rock solid abs and pelvic muscles just like Cameron and strut our stuff on the beach just as confidently. (Not!!)

BeansTalk hears that le Doux suits are favored by other hot bods such as Kristin Cavalleri and Stacy Kiebler. Get it: www.ledouxswimwear.com

Waking the Dead

Star Trevor Eve returns with new recruit, Tara FitzGerald

International Emmy-winning Waking the Dead is back with an all new season. BBC AMERICA’s Cold Case squad returns to revive long-dead cases with cutting-edge techniques. This season they investigate a bare-knuckle boxing ring, the skull of a 19th Century Sudanese ruler, a trail of gold ingots that leads to Opus Dei, and a Nazi ceremonial dagger — all to solve murders filed away for years. Waking the Dead, season six, premieres Monday, April 23, 9:00 p.m. ET/10:00 p.m. PT.

Chief Inspector Boyd (Trevor Eve, Troy) and his tight-knit team — psychological profiler Dr. Grace Foley (Sue Johnston, Clatterford) and Detectives Spencer Jordan (Wil Johnson, Cracker) and Stella (Félicité Du Jeu, Ultimate Force) — are joined this season by a new pathologist, Eve (Tara FitzGerald, Jane Eyre). She has an encyclopedic mind and a spiky, but healthy, relationship with her boss, Boyd.

The six, U.S. premiere, two-hour cases are:

* Wren Boys

Monday, April 23, 9:00 p.m. ET/10:00 p.m. PT.

When a teenage boy is found dead with a piece of his brother’s ear in his stomach, the team delves into the world of a gypsy family and some local nuns to get closer to a dark secret.

* Deus Ex Machina.

Monday, April 30, 9:00 p.m. ET/10:00 p.m. PT.

When a Sudanese politician goes on a hunger strike to protest the theft of an important artefact, the Cold Case team is called in to find it. While searching for the item, the skull of a 19th Century ruler, the team is asked to re-open the decades-old case of a murdered Iraqi refugee.

* The Fall.

Monday, May 7, 9:00 p.m. ET/10:00 p.m. PT.

This case begins when workmen find a mummified couple where a bank used to be. The team follows a trail of gold ingots through a massive web of relationships — clients, family, and lovers — but only after the tragic death of a Detective on the team and a revenge killing is the mystery finally revealed.

* Mask of Sanity.

Monday, May 14, 9:00 p.m. ET/10:00 p.m. PT.

When a victim’s family is contacted at the same time a serial killer is released into the community, the team is called in to investigate. But the tension mounts as another murder is committed, and they realize they have another case — and another murderer — on their hands.

* Double Bind.

Monday, May 21, 9:00 p.m. ET/10:00 p.m. PT.

A body unearthed from a garden is a student who disappeared in the ‘60s. At least one person knew the body was there — an escaped psychiatric patient who killed his parents. As the team investigates how the cases are linked, clues lead them to a commune and several LSD-addled individuals.

* Yahrzeit.

Monday, May 28, 9:00 p.m. ET/10:00 p.m. PT.

When Boyd receives an anonymous package containing a Nazi ceremonial dagger, it leads him to the cold case file of a young girl found stabbed to death on an East London street in May 1945. Boyd discovers that the last person to look in the file was his old colleague, Mel Silver, who died two weeks later.

Five New Shows on Kids' WB

Kids’ WB! on The CW, the No.1 rated Saturday morning kids broadcast slate, will add five new animated series to its 2007-2008 lineup, it was announced by Kids’ WB! Senior Vice President and General Manager Betsy McGowen.

In addition to the previously announced all-new “Spider-Man” animated series, Kids’ WB! will welcome new adventure shows – the CG-animated “Eon Kid,” the multi-platform enhanced “Magi-Nation,” and the action/comedy “World of Quest” – as well as a series of self-discovery for the younger set, “Will & Dewitt.”

“The Kids’ WB! core audience thrives on heightened levels of action and adventure, and these new series promise to take our fans into realms they couldn’t have imagined,” McGowen said. “Each has its unique nuances, and yet all share a penchant for harrowing thrills, heroic feats and ultimate engagements between the forces of good and evil.”

Season to date for the 2006-2007 campaign, Kids’ WB! has six of the top 10 rated shows among broadcast networks on Saturday mornings in the Kids 2-11, Boys 2-11, Kids 6-11 and Boys 9-14 demographics. The new series include:

“Eon Kid” brings adventure to the life of Marty, an enterprising 11-year-old who unexpectedly becomes the human extension of the Fist of Eon. Seemingly lost for all time, the Fist endows Marty with amazing fighting powers – but puts him at the heart of a centuries-old struggle between good and evil. Pursued by the dark armies of The General, Marty must undertake a hero’s journey of action, adventure, comedy and self-discovery into an eye-popping world of battle-bots, bounty hunters, legendary warriors and humanoid bandits. Premiering in Fall 2007, “Eon Kid” is produced in state-of-the-art, computer-generated television animation by Daiwon C&A Holdings Co., Design Storm Co., BRB International and Manga Entertainment, and distributed by Starz Media.

Adventure and comedy make perfect partners when a spoiled young prince is unevenly paired with a square-jawed hero to defeat evil and restore order to their kingdom in “World of Quest.” When his parents are kidnapped by the nefarious Lord Spite, pampered Prince Nestor enlists the assistance of Quest, the planet’s greatest warrior. Quest is the only hero with enough strength, skill and courage to wield the Shatter Soul Sword, which is the only weapon that can defeat Lord Spite. However, the Sword is missing – and the prince, warrior and villain are all on a desperate mission to find it. Based on the Komikwerks graphic novel series by Jason Kruse, “World of Quest” is produced by Cookie Jar Entertainment and premieres within the Kids’ WB! lineup in Fall 2007.

“Magi-Nation” follows the adventures of teenager Tony Jones, whose world is forever changed when he is mystically transported into a beautiful world far beyond imagination that was created a millennia ago by a powerful race known as the Magi. Here Tony meets Edyn and Strag, two young Magi heroes in training, who help him discover his vast new magical environment. However, all is not perfect in Tony’s new world as the Moonlands of Magi-Nation are threatened by the evil Shadow Magi. It’s up to this young trio and their vast collection of Dream Creatures to thwart the evildoers’ plans and protect their world.

A multi-platform entertainment brand, kids enter the fantastic world of “Magi-Nation” via the 2D animated television series. From there, fans can experience the continuing action of the three young Magi heroes via the Internet as they navigate their way through environmental obstacles and confront the constant challenges and creatures that threaten the vitality of the 12 precious Moonlands of Magi-Nation. “Magi-Nation” is produced by Cookie Jar Entertainment and Daewon Media (Korea). It premieres on Kids’ WB! in Fall 2007.

Turning from action to self-discovery and personal accomplishment, “Will & Dewitt” proves that sometimes the little victories are the greatest. Will is an everyday little kid with an endless thirst for big kid adventure. But he needs direction. Enter Dewitt, his talking frog and personal “life coach,” Dewitt’s a frog and then some – a green ball of shape-shifting optimism to guide Will toward his destiny of discovering that all things are possible. Where there’s Will, Dewitt is the way. Premiering in Fall 2007 on Kids’ WB!, “Will & Dewitt” is produced by Cookie Jar Entertainment.

Also coming in early 2008 to Kids’ WB! is a new “Spider-Man” animated series from Culver Entertainment. The series picks up the original web-slinger’s mythology at the beginning of his hero’s journey – as a not-so-typical 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school. Having spent the summer engaging common criminals with his new-found powers, Peter Parker must conceal his secret identity while engaging a new level of terror – the multi-leveled pressures of teenage life at home and school while combating bigger, badder super-villains in the real world. Greg Weisman (“Gargoyles”) is supervising producer and Victor Cook (“Hellboy: Blood and Iron”) is producer/supervising director. Premiere is slated for early 2008 on Kids’ WB!

Kids’ WB! previously announced re-ups on four returning Warner Bros. Animation series. Back this fall for second seasons are "Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get a Clue!" the top-rated Saturday morning animated broadcast series, and the popular "Tom and Jerry Tales.” Also returning for its second season is “Legion of Super Heroes,” recently named Wizard magazine’s “Best Animated Series” of 2006. In addition, three-time Daytime Emmy Award winner “The Batman” has begun production on its fourth season. All four series begin new seasons in Fall 2007.

Cookie Jar Entertainment’s “Johnny Test,” one of Saturday morning’s top performing broadcast series, will also return to Kids’ WB! for its third season beginning in Fall 2007.

A leader in children’s programming, Kids’ WB! continues to be a unique destination for kids. Kids’ WB!, now airing on The CW Network, has been the broadcast home for such cornerstone hits as the blockbusters “Pokémon” and “Yu-Gi-Oh!,” Emmy® Award-winners “Xiaolin Showdown” and “The Batman,” culturally diverse series “Jackie Chan Adventures” and “¡Mucha Lucha! Gigante,” and breakout hits “Shaggy & Scooby-Doo Get A Clue!” and “Legion of Super Heroes,” among other favorites. Kids and their parents can find more information about Kids’ WB! programming online at www.KidsWB.com.

The Original Metrosexual

BBC AMERICA movie charts the rise and fall of the man who created the modern suit

Beau Brummell was a metrosexual 200 years before the word was conceived. His name has become synonymous with wit, decadence, fine tailoring, and fashion. A socialite and style icon, who was a contemporary of Lord Byron, Brummell was singly responsible for changing forever the way men dress – inventing, in effect, the modern suit. Beau Brummell: This Charming Man premieres Sunday, May 6, 8:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The wickedly handsome James Purefoy (Rome) stars as the notorious dandy who became famous for his impeccable dress sense and connections with the right people, including the Prince of Wales (Hugh Bonneville, Tsunami) and Lord Byron (Matthew Rhys, Brothers & Sisters). Beau Brummell: This Charming Man documents his relationship to the Prince, and how Brummell convinced him to change his dress from Regency Fop – painted face, powdered wig, brightly-colored jackets – to the more streamlined, natural look of the ‘Dandical Body’.

Through love letters, historical records, and poems, critically-acclaimed biographer, Ian Kelly, unlocks the glittering, turbulent world of late-18th and early-19th century London – the first truly modern metropolis. Brummell personified London's West End, where a new style of masculinity and modern men's fashion were first defined. Kelly, who appears in the film as a member of the ‘Dandical Body’, reveals the man inside the suit, unlocking the scandalous behavior of London's high society in a rare rendering of an era filled with excess, scandal, promiscuity, opulence, and luxury. Having risen to a height of popularity, however, his descent was swift. The victim of his own excess and also some bad influences, including Lord Byron, Brummell fell from grace and eventually died, penniless in France.

7 for all Celebrity Mankind

Seems like many celebs are getting their fashion fix at 7 for all Mankind lately. Paparazzi lenses have recently spotted Cate Blanchett in London wearing a very chic looking pair of Farrah denims, a casual Jennifer Garner wearing a pair of bootcuts while sharing a moment with Ben (… is that a cigarette in her hand? we hope not!), and Lindsay Lohan looking very healthy and cute after rehab shopping in her Gingers. (below)

BeansTalk has our 7s in heavy rotation as well. These jeans are really great for every-day, and feel like they know you like a good friend the minute you put them on. They evoke that classic California casual attitude, and are effortlessly sexy.

By the way, for BeansTalk readers who may not exactly fill out those super skinny jeans the way Cameron Diaz does… we have good news. The look on the runway this spring is the wide trouser-legged jean. We have seen the look from most of the major designers and it appears to be a major theme for spring.

Okay, we know what you are thinking: a “trouser” means that it will have a pleated waistline and ridiculous tapered legs. (a la Mom jeans literally ripped off women’s bodies on TLCs What Not to Wear) Never fear. These trousers have wonderful wide leg openings that move as you walk and flatter peep-toed pumps. They are elongating to the female form and balance out any figure flaws one may have around the mid-section. Check out the introduction from 7FAM:

The Ginger is the widest trouser fit that 7 For All Mankind offers. It sits on the hips and skims the thigh before loosening to create an ultra wide leg opening. The Ginger features 7 For All Mankind’s signature squiggle back pocket detailing.

Details:
• Wide legs; inseam, approximately 33 3/4".
• Button/zip fly.
• 98% cotton, 2% spandex.
• Made in USA.
• Machine wash.

It comes in 2 washes. Daytona and Light weight mercer.

Light Weight Mercer is a lighter version of the ever popular and saturated Mercer wash. Inspired by the sleek and rich hues of the streets of New York, the Light Weight Mercer packs just as much punch as the Mercer, with just about half the weight.

BeansTalk favorite: Daytona is soft-handed light weight indigo denim with a green oceanic cast. The wash is slightly faded through the rear and thigh with whiskers, pinching around the pockets, and minimal distress. This weight and wash is perfect for summer. Pair it up with a hip message tee touting your favorite rock band, environmental sentiment, or pop artwork. (For ideas check out: www.sinfulclothing.com., www.fredsegalfun.com., or www.peoplesliberation.com)

The Light Weight Mercer Ginger retails for $143. The Daytona Ginger retails for $187

Barielle: Ace of Bases

Barielle Primes Your Nails for Polish with the Right Base Coat for You

The first step to polishing your nails is choosing the right base coat. Barielle offers a collection of base coats that treat specific nail concerns while they act as a protective adhesive layer and create a smooth surface for nail polish application.

Whether you have weak/peeling nails, ridges, dull/stained nails, or are coming off acrylics or silk wraps, Barielle has the right base coat for you. Keeping your overall health in mind, all products are Dibutyl-Phthalate, Toluene and Formaldehyde-free, and are safe to use during pregnancy.

Professional Tip: Celebrity manicurist Elle suggests starting with a pre-base coat prep like Restorative Nail Serum, which cleanses and primes the nail plate with a multi-fruit complex of Alpha Hydroxy acids, because it will allow the base coat to apply evenly and will extend the life of your manicure.

She also suggests applying the base coat in even strokes starting at the cuticle and moving to the free edge, with the first stroke up the middle of the nail and then a stroke up each side. It will ensure that your nail is completely protected from polish that can seep through uncoated areas and stain your nails.

Barielle’s base coat collection includes:

Fortifying Nail Builder with Calcium Fluoride: a universal base coat to keep nails from splitting, cracking and peeling with a Calcium Fluoride-enriched formula to bond weak layers and seal free edges. Size: .50 fl oz/MSRP: $16.00

Nail Rebuilding Protein: nails damaged by acrylics and silk wraps will benefit from a powerful formula of Keratin, Vitamin E, and Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein to help bond and fortify nail layers. Size: .50 fl oz/MSRP: $17.50

Natural Nail Camouflage: a natural color-enhancer to camouflage nail imperfections and discoloration while strengthening nails with Vitamin E, Calcium Fluoride and Vegetable Protein. Size: .50 fl. oz/MSRP: $16.00

Hydrating Ridge Filler: a base coat formulated with Silk Fibers to fill in ridges and Water to replenish moisture loss. Size: .50 fl oz/MSRP: $16.00

Availability: Fred Segal and Pure Beauty, as well as specialty stores including Zitomer and Clyde’s Chemists.

Dog Whisperer’s Busy Friday

On Friday, March 30, Cesar Millan Communicates With Dogs In This Life… And in the Next

(WASHINGTON, D.C. — March 21, 2007) Emmy-nominated Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan takes on one of his toughest challenges yet — a ghost. On Friday, March 30, at 8 p.m. ET/PT, Cesar Millan guest stars as himself on the CBS hit show “Ghost Whisperer.” Then, at a special time, 9 p.m. ET/PT on the National Geographic Channel, catch the season finale of Dog Whisperer.

First, on “Ghost Whisperer,” Millan appears as himself at a local book signing. When Homer, the ghost dog, returns to Grandview, Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) seeks Cesar’s advice. Will Cesar be able to help this dog cross over into the light?

Then, in Dog Whisperer: Hope, Chloe and Sam, Cesar meets Chloe, a disrespectful cocker spaniel. Maureen, who has cerebral palsy, received Chloe as a gift from her grandfather in the hopes that the dog would provide her with emotional and physical support. But the 8-year-old Chloe has taken to taunting Maureen, sometimes even knocking her from her walker. When people try to greet Maureen in the house or on the street, Chloe will bark and nip at them. Will Cesar be able to tame Chloe and provide Maureen with the service dog she deserves? And, in a special surprise, Maureen’s grandfather flies in to see how she is doing with Chloe.

Also in the season finale, Cesar heads to Tijuana to witness Mexico’s overwhelming stray dog problem. There he helps the volunteers from United Hope for Animals rescue dogs at the Tijuana pound, or “perrera.” Cesar also visits a spay/neuter clinic run by the Humane Society of Tijuana and United Hope for Animals, where Mexicans and Americans work side by side. Back in the United States, Cesar meets up with United Hope for Animals to rehabilitate some of their foster dogs. Cesar surprises the group by adopting a dachshund, a breed of dog he’s always wanted.

With more than 20 years of experience working with canines, Millan has been called “Dr. Phil for dogs,” and for good reason. He has a unique gift of rehabilitating dogs and training their owners. A favorite of “Oprah Winfrey,” Cesar was also parodied on a recent episode of “South Park,” and his book "Cesar's Way" (Harmony Books, 2006) has been a fixture on the New York Times best-seller list for the past five months. The second season of Dog Whisperer received a nomination for a Primetime Emmy award. Millan was made an honorary member of the International Association of Canine Professionals, and was recently honored with The Michael Landon Award for Inspiration to Youth Through Television at the 28th Young Artist Awards.

Dog Whisperer is produced by MPH Entertainment and Emery/Sumner Productions for National Geographic Channel. Executive producers for MPH Entertainment are Jim Milio, Melissa Jo Peltier and Mark Hufnail. Sheila Possner Emery and Kay Bachman Sumner are producers. For the National Geographic Channel, senior executive producer for season three is Char Serwa, senior vice president of special programming is Michael Cascio and executive-in-charge of production is John Ford.

Lip Lock

Recently, BeansTalk puckered up with von Natur’s Colours, Lip Stains, and Lip Shimmers. Our friends at von Natur offer these three versatile products for the woman who may want to create different lip effects throughout the day and into the evening. As any make up artist will tell you, potted lip colors can be applied with a brush or fingertip; however, this BeansTalk staffer feels that much greater precision and a variety of effects can be achieved with a brush… and both can be easily tucked into a small purse. So, although some of the von Natur products appear to be more opaque or sheer, light or heavy brush applications gave us greater range.

Details:
von Natur’s Lip Colours are all natural, opaque, creamy, long lasting, and available in 5 shades: Cayenne, Curry, Saffron, Cinnamon, Nutmeg. BeansTalk found these colors to be earthy and pretty. ($16.00 4g)

von Natur’s Lip Stains gave a sheer yet pronounced color addition to our lips. The Lip Stains include Food Drug & Cosmetics colorants. Available in 4 stains: Orchid, Red Gerbera, Viola, Winter Cherry. We had fun mixing colors, and using this sheer cover over more opaque lip products. ($20.00 4g)

von Natur’s Lip Shimmers are all natural, smooth, therapeutic, and gave us just an added hint of color. Quicktip: simply add a dot of the Lip Shimmer to the center of your lower lip for that movie star pout. Colors available in 8 shades: Aster, Snowdrop, Coriander, Sweet Violet, Forget-me-Not, Ginger, Nasturtium, Heliotrope ($ 20.00 4g)

As always, BeansTalk gives animal-friendly kudos to von Natur for using Candelilla Wax instead of beeswax in all lip products. Check them out at http://www.vonnatur.com/.
