Top Gun

BeansTalk on Pilots

We’ve had a chance to catch the NBC, CBS and CW fall pilots. So far, we’ve found one show we’re going to turn into (meaning, that we really want to watch, not something we have to watch for our day job).

Our current pick is Reaper, a new horror-comedy from Kevin Smith (Clerks). It's about a young guy who finds out his parents sold his soul to the devil and has to pay back Mr. Satan by being a bounty hunter. The show stars Bret Harrison who was Lily Finnerty’s neighbor-boyfriend on Fox’s underrated “Grounded for Life.” He also had a recurring role as “Charlie” on “That ‘70s Show” -- he probably should’ve gone on to the final season instead of the much-less-likable Josh Meyers. Instead, Harrison opted to star in the little-seen Fox series, “The Loop,” which was O.K., but certainly without the potential of “Reaper.”

Reaper will air this fall, Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on The CW

Astrella Celeste Visits U.S.

Donovan'’s middle daughter kicks off U.S. visit in New York City as pair of major televised performances set for broadcast, starting with: The Donovan Concert: Live in L.A. (PBS) The ‘60s Love Child with the 21st Century Spirit” Takes Euro-buzz Global with June 4 digital release of U.K. hit single, “Dream.”

A powerful statement of intent from the girl, something that will and has put her on the map the world over.” – The Talk Magazine

MALLORCA, Spain - As her Euro-buzz crests with a high profile performance slot at the prestigious 2007 Isle of Wight Festival and a surge of oversees radio airplay, pop-jazz chanteuse Astrella Celeste is heading to New York City to kick off the June 4, 2007 digital release of her U.K. hit single, “Dream” and promote her guest appearance with her father on his upcoming PBS television special. The Donovan Concert: Live in L.A, will start airing nationally the same week “Dream” goes on cyber-sale and will be featured on the iTunes home page. (Check local listings for airdates and times.)

Born to rock royalty as the middle daughter of Donovan and embraced throughout Europe as “The ‘60s Love Child with the 21st Century Spirit,” Astrella is scheduled to arrive June 25 in New York City for several days of industry meetings, showcases and media activity while re-acquainting herself with the country where she spent much of her unusually blessed childhood and a portion of her adult life.

“I was born in America and have lived here half my life,” says Astrella. “It feels like home. I can’t wait to come back.”

“Dream” is currently in radio rotation throughout the United Kingdom and is spreading throughout Europe, gaining steady spins in France, Spain, Italy and Germany amid significant European press coverage in the Sunday Times Magazine, Hello and the Daily Mail, among others. In the U.S., Astrella was seen last month performing a duet rendition of “Dream” with her father when the PBS special first aired exclusively on Long Island’s WLIW-TV in a concert benefiting the David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace. The Donovan Concert: Live in L.A. was taped in January at Hollywood’s esteemed Kodak Theater (home of the Oscars).

Also in support of her single release, Astrella will be seen singing “Dream” by a global TV audience, as her Isle of Wight main stage performance – along with those of the Rolling Stones and many other legends – is being recorded for worldwide telecast (and airing live on BBC4). Astrella makes her Isle of Wight Festival debut on June, the weekend immediately following the digital release of “Dream.”

“Dream” is a driving fusion of jazz, pop and country showcasing Astrella as a songwriter who creates exceptionally personal, soulful and sensitive music with a sweet, almost innocent quality. She alternately recalls such icons as Liz Phair, Shania Twain and Natalie Merchant while capturing the lyrical and relaxing spirit of Donovan’s psychedelic folk-rock classics.

“Dream” is the first track from Astrella’s upcoming 6-song EP Blue Star, due in the fall. (Its title is the Spanish translation of Astrella-Celeste.) "Dream" was written by Kevin Hunter (of Sheryl Crow’s Tuesday Night Music Club), Astrella’s writing partner on the rest of Blue Star. It’s produced by Yoad Nevo (Sugababes, Goldfrapp) with string arrangements by the legendary John Cameron (Les Miserables, Jose Carreras). Astrella’s core band is Rat Scabies on drums, Andy Hobson (Pretenders) on bass and Carmen Squire (daughter of Yes keyboardist Chris Squire) sharing backing vocals with Astrella.

As beautiful as she is talented, Astrella's career has been richly developed through collaborations in the studio, on stage and in home jams with David Gilmour, Brian Setzer, Graham Nash and the Happy Mondays, to name but a few. Astrella’s easygoing style is a reflection of the charmed life she’s led since childhood. She released her first single in Italy at age 8, which led to the Pope asking to meet her, and spent her youth in acting schools and dance troupes before working with her father providing backing vocals and touring with him.

"My dad will always be my biggest influence,” says Astrella, “but I also love Chet Baker, Nina Simone, Sade, Tori Amos, The Cardigans ... I could go on and on."

Article on Astrella from the Daily Mail, London

He was the ultimate hippy who left behind him a legacy of memorable flower-power songs such as Hurdy Gurdy Man, Mellow Yellow and Jennifer Juniper.

For a few years in the Sixties, Donovan was more famous than the Queen. But it wasn't just his songs that lived on in people's consciousness. He also left a legacy of dysfunction that deeply affected those who loved him.

He abandoned his lover, the American model Enid Karl and their two children — Ione Skye (now a film star) and Donovan Leitch (who became a Calvin Klein model) — and was estranged from them for many years.

His youngest daughter, Oriole, from his marriage to Linda Lawrence, became pregnant at 17 and has two children by different fathers. And his other daughter, Astrella Celeste, endured a six-year relationship with her heroin-addicted lover, Paul Ryder, from the rock band Happy Mondays.

Yet, somehow, the family has survived and, today, Donovan is more likely to be found playing contentedly with his grandchildren than indulging in the excesses of his past.

Much of the credit for his fragile reconciliation with the splintered parts of his family must go to Astrella.

Having survived the most unconventional of childhoods, she is, today, a beautiful young woman of 34 who is happily married, ready to start a family of her own and about to embark on a music career.

Her first single, Dream, is being released next month on Donovan Discs — the record label she has set up with her father.

And it is instantly clear from talking to her that she is not only creative, but has a sound business head — Astrella and her music manager husband, Jason Rothberg, also have a property company which she can fall back on if her music career doesn't take off.

At the age of seven, Astrella appeared on stage with her father in front of 50,000 people at a charity telethon in Israel. By the age of ten, she was being offered record deals, which her parents declined on her behalf.

'It got a little bit too much too soon, so my father pulled me back,' she recalls. 'He didn't want the same thing happening to me that had happened to him in the Sixties. In his teens, he was selling out every major stadium in the world. But by the time he was 24, he was disillusioned and burnt out.'

Muse

At the age of 24, Donovan dropped out of sight and went to live in Ireland with Linda, the woman he calls his 'muse'. They have now been married for 34 years.

He adopted her son, Julian — the result of her affair with tragic Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones, who drowned in his swimming pool at the age of 27 after a suspected drugs overdose — and the couple had two children of their own, Oriole and Astrella.

Throughout her childhood, Astrella was aware that she had siblings in America, but there was no contact with them. She discovered her father had abandoned Enid Karl when their son was a baby and she was pregnant with Ione.

'I was aware of them because I had seen pictures, but we didn't have any contact,' she recalls. 'As I got older, I decided the situation was ridiculous and I wanted to know my siblings. Understandably, Ione and Donovan didn't really want to know my dad because he wasn't there for them when he should have been.

'Ione said a lot of bad things about Dad in Press articles, so I persuaded him to call them, which he did. They came to see us, but it was very difficult.

'So, when I was 17, I decided to spend time with Donovan Leitch and Ione in Los Angeles. It was nerve-wracking at first and I felt guilty that I'd had our father in my life and they hadn't.

'We started off having lunches together, but then spent nearly every day together for about a year-and-a-half. We got very close and even though it's difficult to see them — because I live in Majorca and they are in America — we try to get together when we can.

'There is still a process going on between them and Dad. It will take time to heal. Ione was particularly resentful of him — and quite rightly so. What Dad did was wrong and I would have felt the same.

'I've also spent quite a lot of time with Enid. Last Thanksgiving was a big stepping stone. She invited my mother and father and it was the first time they had all been together. It was very emotional.'

Of all her siblings, Astrella describes herself as 'the goody two-shoes that everybody was always very proud of'. She says: 'I have always been very opinionated and single-minded about what I want.'

What she didn't want was to repeat her father's mistakes.

His years of drug-taking and womanising left their mark on her to the extent that she went totally the other way.

'I was determined to be normal. I had been living my life like a gipsy, surrounded by drugs and crazy people. So when I was 16, I got a job in a clothing store because it was as far removed from my family life as possible.'

When she returned from America, however, Astrella inadvertently got caught up with the very life she had tried to avoid. She met the Happy Mondays' bass player, Paul Ryder, whose brother Shaun had a child with her sister, Oriole.

Very romantic

'I was celibate and hadn't been with anybody for a long time when I met Paul,' she says. 'He seemed really sweet and it was all very romantic. We were together for six years and I was stepmother to his two children.

'But Paul was involved in a very heavy drugs environment. I had never come across heroin before and it was a shock to the system.

'I believed there was something I could do to better the situation, but eventually I realised you can't help somebody who doesn't want to change. And so we split up.'

Astrella went back to America and was determined not to have another relationship — but then she met Rothberg, the man who was to become her husband.

'I was a little scared of him at first because he was very wild, but gradually we became great friends and things evolved from there. It was his honesty that won me over. Fidelity is very important to me and I don't want to be deceived.'

The couple celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary this year and hope to start a family one day. Says Astrella: 'I can't imagine my life without a child, but I need to focus on my career for the next year or two. Because of the way I was brought up, I know that having children is a huge responsibility.'

But, for the time being, Astrella is concentrating on the release of her first single and is working on an album.

She doesn't worry about her career being so closely linked to her father, saying: 'This is the first time my father has had his own record label — and I'm the one who has pushed for it.

'It is hard to work with your own family, but it's worthwhile if you can make it work. My father has done some bad things in his life, but I still love him. Of all my brothers and sisters, I think I am the one closest to him.

'I used to be very frustrated by my family, but I wouldn't have had it any other way. I don't think I would be as tough and as strong as I am now if I hadn't had to deal with the problems we've had.'

Beatles Insider And Music Industry Executive
Ken Mansfield Pens Memoir Of Rock's Greatest Era:

The White Book
The Beatles, the Bands, the Biz:
An Insider's Look at an Era

Includes Never-Before-Told Accounts About The Fab Four, The Beach Boys,
Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, James Taylor, Harry Nilsson and Many More

Book Available w/Limited, Numbered Edition a la The Beatles'
"The White Album"

Ken Mansfield has worked with some of the biggest giants in the rock 'n roll and the country music genres. As the former U.S. manager of the Apple Records label, he was invited by his bosses, The Beatles to be among only a handful of eyewitnesses to catch their last-ever gig on the rooftop of their London headquarters on January 30, 1969. He was a loyal employee and companion to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr both during the band years and well after their breakup in 1970. He was present when they composed some of their most enduring tunes. As a record label exec and Grammy Award-winning producer, he also worked on the marketing, promotion and production of dozens of top-selling artists, such as the Beach Boys, and was also a major player in country music in the 1970s as producer of choice of the groundbreaking Outlaw movement, whose impact is still felt in the genre to this very day.

Now, Mansfield's experiences with the Fab Four and the music industry -- many of which are told for the first time -- are recounted in his first all-music tome, "The White Book - The Beatles, the Bands, the Biz: An Insider's Look at an Era" (Thomas Nelson/ISBN 1-59555-101-8, $22.99) to publish October 30, 2007.

Through exclusive, never-before-seen photos and personal stories, Mansfield -- one of the very last Fab Four insiders to pen a book -- offers a compelling memoir that delves into his life in the 1960s and '70s and his unique partnership with The Beatles and other musicians who had orbited their world, from James Taylor to Harry Nilsson. It also includes fleeting, yet unforgettable encounters with Mama Cass Elliott, Eric Clapton, Donovan, Glen Campbell and Dolly Parton. As observer, friend and colleague, Mansfield attended Beatles recording sessions, partied in their swimming pools, took their irate calls, witnessed the madness of Beatlemania, and publicized their success. Entertaining, historically accurate, and illuminating a side of the Fab Four known only to a few like Mansfield, The White Book shines fresh light on the true characters behind the cultural phenomena that revolutionized a generation.

"The White Book" will be packaged in a limited, numbered edition, a la the original copies of "The Beatles" highly influential double album from 1968, also nicknamed "The White Album."

As the former head of Apple Records, Jack Oliver, has said of Ken, "He is one of the few insiders left that bore witness to the highs and lows of those insane days when we ruled the world."

Mansfield was an insider to Beatles history in the making, yet still retained a wide-eyed amazement and excitement about his involvement with these events. In addition to aggressively promoting the various artists in the Apple Records stable like James Taylor, Badfinger, Mary Hopkin and Jackie Lomax, he became a trusted member of his bosses' inner circle and got to know them intimately - he was among a small, privileged audience as the four Beatles played a casual cocktail set at noontime in London during a break from a meeting, he would join them at local boutiques or cafés, and was around when they composed their songs. Even after Mansfield resigned from Apple Records in 1970, he would still be a key personal liaison and friend to them, either mailing them copies of the latest U.S. country albums or being their escort for them and/or their wives when they visited Los Angeles. These stories shed new insight into their personalities: McCartney surprised the author with an all-expense, first-time-ever trip to Europe; Lennon clashed with him about matters surrounding Apple's sister, yet short-lived electronic label, Zapple; Harrison gave veggie cooking lessons in Mansfield's kitchen, and the author accompanied Starr to Elvis' comeback show in Las Vegas in 1970.

This book also details other fascinating highlights of Mansfield's career. As a record-label executive, he had also worked with artists as diverse as the The Four Freshmen, Judy Garland, Buck Owens, Lou Rawls, Andy Williams, David Cassidy, Dolly Parton, and the Flying Burrito Brothers. He helped popularize the Outlaw movement in country music by producing Waylon Jennings' top-selling album, Are You Ready for the Country in LA in 1976. Uniquely this was one of the first country albums recorded outside of Nashville, and its success spurred interest from other Music Row artists to create their own albums in Hollywood. He also helped ink Ringo Starr's deal to Private Music/RCA, which led to the release of the drummer's first pop studio album in a decade, the critically acclaimed Time Takes Time from 1992.

Some of the great stories in the book include:

-- Spending hours with the Beatles on the floor of the yet-to-be-furnished Apple offices in London mulling over whether "Hey Jude" or "Revolution" should be the A-side of their first 45 with Apple Records in 1968. Ken was assigned to visit top rock radio stations in the U.S. and have the DJ's vote for their favorite; naturally the consensus was for "Hey Jude," which was then ultimately chosen and became one of the most successful singles in their career.

-- Ken was among the very few of the Fab Four associates to witness the historic last Beatles concert on the rooftop of 3 Savile Row, Apple's headquarters in London, on January 30, 1969 - spot him in the Let It Be film wearing the white raincoat, sitting next to Yoko Ono and Maureen Starkey, Ringo's wife. Because it was bitter cold, they were huddled together against the smokestack; for a while Ken stood a few feet away from Harrison holding up four lit cigarettes, so that the guitarist could reach over and warm the tips of his fingers in order to feel his guitar strings.

-- Being snubbed for life by Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson in 1965, when Mansfield, then the National Promotion Manager at Capitol Records, tried to discourage Brian from releasing the band's loose, party jam, "Barbara Ann" as a single - Brian gave him a furious glare and ignored his advice, and the record eventually became a worldwide smash.

-- A once-in-a-lifetime superstar "guitar pull" in late 1968 in LA at a house that Mansfield had rented for George Harrison, where Harrison, along with Jack Casady from Jefferson Airplane, Eric Clapton (during the last days of his supergroup, Cream), Donovan and Jackie Lomax sat together around a circle performing songs on their guitars.

-- Being invited by McCartney to join in with suggestions as he was composing "Back in the U.S.S.R." and "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" from the nicknamed "The White Album"

-- John Lennon and Yoko Ono protesting Mansfield's decision not to release a single on Apple Records called "The King of Fuh" in the U.S.. After Ken stated that the lyrics would be blatantly objectionable by American standards, Lennon said, "we thought you were one of us, Ken...but it looks like you are just one of the establishment like everyone else, after all... we thought we could trust you of all people to understand the concept behind the whole Apple enterprise... we didn't know you were sent over here from the 'land of the free' to act as Apple's personal tight-assed censor!"

-- The last few tragic moments in the life of Beatles' roadie Mal Evans in 1976, who was killed repeatedly by police gunfire - Ken said he was one of the last people he had spoken to; he couldn't meet with Mal because he had to accept an award at the Billboard Music Awards.

With ringing endorsements from such rock 'n roll legends as top producers Peter Asher and Alan Parsons, and former Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, as well as Beatles historians, "The White Book" transports readers through a long and winding road of new stories that shed insight into their icons and favorite musicians of rock's greatest era.
