Nioxin helps stress-related hair loss, too.

Stress Contributes to Hair Loss

Did you know that stress can be an unknown contributor to hair loss? Many women don’t realize that day to day stress can affect the condition of their hair and scalp, causing the scalp to dry out and, ultimately, the hair to thin and break.

According to Dr. Doris Day, a dermatologist and expert in scalp and hair health, “up to 60% of women seek out hair care treatments for thinning hair when they may not be looking at underlying causes like a stressed scalp environment.” Nioxin, the innovator of skincare for the scalp, has been in search of the most natural ingredients to help further a healthy scalp environment for the last 20 years.

When people think of the scalp, they think about hair but rarely the skin itself. Healthy scalp skin is vital for healthy hair. This poses a special challenge since the skin on the scalp is often hard to reach. Scalp skin has its own special needs due to the higher density and type of hair follicles, as compared with skin on other parts of the body.

An unhealthy scalp environment – typified by redness, dryness and itching - can cause the hair to break from the root and cause it to prematurely fall out. The underlying causes of an unhealthy scalp environment include:

General Health/Stress: Stress can produce increased levels of testosterone, which converts to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – the trigger for fine or thin-looking hair. Stress can also restrict the proper balance of essential nutrients getting to the scalp and hair roots, resulting in fine, fragile hair.

Environment/External factors: Chemical hair treatments and services like professional hair straightening, color and perms, can dry and irritate the scalp skin. Free radicals like pollutants in the air and water, as well as damaging UV rays negatively affect the delicate scalp skin.

Nutrition/Diet: Poor eating habits, excessive saturated fat intake, and vitamin and/or mineral deficiencies can cause excessive daily hair loss. A lack of biotin, iron, protein and zinc are particularly damaging.

Hormones: Hormonal swings, especially in women, often having a temporary or even permanent affect on healthy-looking hair.
