Burton & Depp Guest on
BBC America Talk Show


On tonight's episode (5 March 2010), director Tim Burton and his favorite actor Johnny Depp talk with BBC America talk-show host Jonathan Ross about their successful 20-year film career together, as well as their new movie Alice in Wonderland, one of seven movie collaboration. Burton jokes their relationship works because Depp has never seen any of their films together. Depp comments, “I prefer to walk away with the experience” - but admits he might go see Alice in Wonderland.

Burton decided to recreate the classic fable because, “If this story was written now, it would be mind-blowing even today...it’s been such an inspiration for musicians and artists...[Alice in Wonderland] is in the subconscious of everyone.” And Depp reveals an inner look into his Mad Hatter character – “someone who is touched by madness but confused by the madness as well...we were trying to turn him into some kind of human mood ring.”

Depp says before the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, he wasn’t a popular choice for leading man, and notes, “they used to call me box office poison,” but he confirms there will be a fourth Pirates movie. Burton and Depp said they’ll continue to work together including a new project, Dark Shadows, which Depp calls a “gothic soap opera.”

Also joining Ross is Andrew Lloyd Webber, who discusses his prostate cancer, “I had an infection and if they hadn’t found the infection they wouldn’t have found the cancer – and luckily I’m in the clear...I’m back.” Webber completed a sequel to Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies, which chronicles the story of the phantom and Christine ten years later. Webber describes the project as “twenty years in the making.”

Webber's also looking to cast the next Dorothy in his musical theatre competition show Over the Rainbow. He jokes he's looking for the next Toto, too. Also in the episode, Webber performs the title song Love Never Dies with Sierra Boggess.

Singer Sade returns to the stage in one of her first television appearances in ten years, and performs Solider of Love from her new album.

On next week's, the March 12, 2010 episode, Ross welcomes Lady Gaga, True Blood star Stephen Moyer and English actor and singer Michael Ball.

TV Land greenlit 10 episodes of the original comedy sitcom “Hot in Cleveland,” starring Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick and Jane Leeves with Betty White in the pilot.

“Hot in Cleveland” is written by Emmy Award-winning Suzanne Martin (“Frasier,” “Ellen”) and is produced by Emmy Award-winner Sean Hayes (“Will & Grace”) and Todd Milliner of Hazy Mills Productions. “Hot in Cleveland” is a TV Land Prime original production and is the network’s first venture into scripted comedy series. The series is scheduled to air June 2010.

“Hot in Cleveland” revolves around three Los Angeles best friends whose lives are changed forever when their Paris-bound plane – unexpectedly lands in Cleveland. They rent a large house together only to discover, after taking possession, that they've also inherited by sassy caretaker, played by Betty White.

Jeri Ryan Has Leverage

BeansTalk participated in a recent conference call with Dean Devlin, producer and director of Leverage, a day after Part 1 of Leverage's two-part season finale.

Among questions answered, Devlin said that he, along with the cast and crew, hope Jeri Ryan will stay a part of the hit series as Tara Cole, even with the return of British actress' Gina Bellman’s character, Sophie Devereaux.

Ryan was a late addition to the second season of the TNT series after Bellman showed up pregnant.

“As Gina’s pregnancy came out, we didn’t want to just move her off the show; we really wanted to keep her there as much as possible,” said Devlin. “But we had made the decision that it wasn’t good for the character, for her to have a child.”

So Devlin and the rest of the writing staff had to scrape together a new plot. He admitted that the entire plot of the show changed for this season. For the new plot, the series needed a new grifter, also known as a confidence man or woman, and in came Ryan.

If nothing else, Devlin hopes that Ryan will be back on the show for a couple of episodes.

“Hopefully by the end of the season, her character will be so etched into the lure of our show that the fans will want to see that character reoccur,” said Devlin.

It all will come down to Ryan’s schedule, but Devlin seems more than willing to have her back for awhile longer.

The Future of Cosmetic Surgery?

On March 22, 2010, PBS will air The Lobotomist: An American Experience (9 to 10 p.m.). The lobotomy, which began as an operation of last resort, was soon being performed at some 50 state asylums, often with devastating results. New Who!

The latest Doctor Who makes its U.S. premiere on BBC America on Saturday, April 17, 2010, soon after the UK broadcast.

Doctor Who, BBC America’s highest rated series ever, now features Matt Smith as the new, Eleventh incarnation of the famous Time Lord alongside a new travelling companion, the enigmatic Amy Pond (Karen Gillan).

BAFTA-winning Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat takes over as lead writer and executive producer. Writers for the new series include Richard Curtis (The Boat that Rocked, Love Actually), Chris Chibnall (Law & Order UK, Torchwood), Toby Whithouse (Being Human, Torchwood), Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock) and Simon Nye (Men Behaving Badly, Hardware).

Guest stars include SAG Award winner Alex Kingston (ER, Flash Forward), Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo (The Secret Life of Bees, Hotel Rwanda) and Tony Curran (24).

Travelling both through time and space, the new series has the mysterious Doctor and Amy Pond together exploring sixteenth century Venice, France during the 1890s and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space.

The first three episodes of the 13-episode series have been confirmed as The Eleventh Hour, written by Steven Moffat, The Beast Below, also by Moffat and Victory of the Daleks by Mark Gatiss.

Moffat’s work includes the hit comedy Coupling, the critically-acclaimed thriller Jekyll, the new BBC series Sherlock and along with Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish, the screenplay for The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn - which is being directed by Steven Spielberg.

Piers Wenger (Ashes to Ashes) and Beth Willis (Ashes to Ashes) are the executive producers. It is a BBC Wales production for BBC ONE and distributed by BBC Worldwide.

Bewildered and Bothered
TV Land celebrates the launch of “Bewitched” with a marathon of episodes on Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21, 2010 from 11 am-7 pm ET/PT.

Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) and her mortal husband, Darrin Stevens bring the supernatural to Morning Glory Circle when the series airs in its regularly-scheduled time slot on the network: weekdays from 5 pm-6 pm ET/PT beginning March 1, 2010.

Samantha’s mother, Endora (Agnes Moorehead), does not accept the marriage between her daughter and a mortal husband and constantly visits to unnerve Darrin and complicate their “normal” suburban lifestyle by disobeying his wishes.

Gladys Kravitz (Sandra Gould), the nosy next door neighbor suspects unusual antics occurring in the Stevens household and makes life interesting by relentlessly attempting to uncover Samantha’s secret.

Shelby Lynne to Tour

Grammy winner Shelby Lynne launches an acoustic tour in support of her upcoming album, Tears, Lies, And Alibis, with a show at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, CA on April 22, 2010. U.K. artist Findlay Brown opens on all dates. Tickets for the U.S. tour will go on sale this weekend. (See below for a full itinerary.)

Tears, Lies, And Alibis, due out April 20th, marks the first release on Lynne's own newly founded label, EVERSO RECORDS, which will be distributed through Fontana, the award-winning independent distribution division of Universal Music Group. She'll be performing at the Fontana party at SXSW on March 18th. Coming on the heels of Just a Little Lovin', Lynne's critically acclaimed 2008 tribute to Dusty Springfield, Tears, Lies, And Alibis affirms her position as a visionary, iconoclastic artist who deftly weaves country, soul, rock, blues, pop and folk influences to forge her own unique style. Like Identity Crisis (2003) and Suit Yourself (2005), this sparse, unguarded collection was produced by Lynne, who evokes a live-in-the-studio vibe from a stellar group of musicians.

From the exuberant "Rains Came" and dreamy "Something To Be Said," her ode to the iconic Airstream trailer, to the restless, bluesy "Old Dog" and poignant "Alibi," her evocative imagery brings to life the scarred yet determined group of survivors whose stories are told in Tears, Lies, And Alibis.

Last December, Lynne played a sold-out show at New York City's Carnegie Hall for public radio station WFUV, eliciting praise from The Wall Street Journal's "Speakeasy" for her "lean, elegant arrangements" and the "soulful" new song "Alibi." Upcoming tour dates are as follows:

Swift-ly Down Under

Her "Valentine's Day" movie opens today, but singer Taylor Swift is busy on tour in Australia. She was photographed shopping in Melbourne, wearing abode vecchio nappa Friller platforms by Stuart Weitzman. They don't look like the most comfortable retail therapy wear, but the girl looks good (and happy to be enjoying the Southern Hemisphere's summer). Meanwhile, reports say her former beau, "Twilight's" Taylor Lautner is in demand -- on film, and with the ladies (well, girls. He is, afterall, only 17.).

Designer Alexander McQueen Found Dead

British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, has been found dead in his London home, the BBC reports.

Paramedics were called, but McQueen, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the designer confirmed the news issuing the following statement: “On behalf of Lee McQueen's family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee's family. Lee's family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this."

His death comes one week after the passing of his mother, Joyce, and days before he was to unveil a new spring collection at London Fashion Week.

McQueen, winner of the British Designer of the Year, began as an apprentice on Saville Row where he made jackets at Gieves and Hawkes. In 1996, he was named head designer for the couture house Givenchy.

McQueen designed the now infamous breast-baring, support-less dress that Gwyneth Paltrow wore to the 2002 Academy Awards. Paltrow, who worked without a stylist and chose the McQueen dress herself, was widely criticized for the dress and has been since dubbed one of the classic celebrity fashion missteps.

Katie Holmes, Liv Tyler, Victoria Beckham, Christina Aguilera, Angelina Jolie, Cynthia Nixon, Kate Moss, Cate Blanchett and Sarah Jessica Parker are just a few of the many celebrities who favored McQueen's famously edgy designs of dresses and handbags.

His most signature design may be his feathered wedding dress, with an umbrella-shaped skirt that "Project Runway" villain Kenley was accused of knocking off in her final collection.

Long Term Mane-tenance

Growing short hair long like a Hollywood starlet can seemingly take forever. Faking it comes in handy. Consider: Extensions. Extensions are no longer a "hidden" secret.

But hair extensions are not quite like hair that grows from your roots. Extension upkeep can be tricky. Celebrity hair stylist Mia Shin of Anatasia’s salon in Brentwood, gives extension newbies the basic do’s and don’t’s.

Do's
· Gently Brush Hair. With a soft bristle brush (at least once a day), brush hair from the scalp down. Brush ends of hair as much as you can (makes it look less piecy).
· Condition like crazy. Put Extra conditioner and leave in conditioner in hair daily.
· Shampoo Every Three Days. Extension hair is not attached to your scalp (it's attached to your hair), so it does not get natural oil from scalp. If you shampoo too often it will make hair extremely dry.

Don'ts

· Don't brush or comb when hair Is wet. Only brush when hair is completely dry. All the hair is get tangled when it is wet and the keratin bond slightly expands when hair is wet—the extension could actually slip out.
· Don't shampoo the actual extension hair too much.
· Don't go too close to the bond when you use heat tools (flat or curl)—you want to avoid any and all melting!
She adds, “Extensions are an investment; make it last by taking extra good care of your beautiful hair (even if it’s not technically your own to begin with!).”

Mia Shin is a native of Seoul Korea who was as a fashion designer in Los Angeles, who followed her passion for hair design. She graduated from the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica and worked at some of the top salons in Beverly Hills. Her celebrity clients include Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, and Lo Bosworth.

Bones Gets Fashionable

There's plenty of debate online about whether audiences prefer Temperance Brennan's (Emily Deschanel) wardrobe from Season 1 to 3 or from Season 4 on (she began to wear more noticeably expensive clothing, often featuring a tailored jacket, blazer, or most commonly, a long-line lightweight coat (she has several variations and some even come in bright bold colors).

On a fairly recent episode of Bones ("A Night at the Bones Museum"), an evening formal party setting was an excuse to get those pretty stars in some haute couture. Brennan wore a black lace surplice chiffon dress by Adrianna Pappel (which was available at one time at Nordstrom, but is no longer).

Tamara Taylor, who plays department supervisor Cam, was quite the lady in red. Since the average forensic scientist makes $33K annually (hey, she's the boss, so let's double that number), it still seems quite a stretch that she'd be in such a couture dress.

A couple of weeks ago, Taylor actually wore the dress again to a TCA (Television Critics Assn.) Press Tour Party, celebrating Bones' 100th Episode. So despite the dress' hefty price, it got play -- and Taylor looked gorgeous in the process.

Oren Lavie spent the Thursday before the Grammys celebrating his nomination by performing at the Bergamont Station in Santa Monica.

Lavie was nominated in the category “Best Short Form Music Video” for the video of his song “Her Morning Elegance,” which he also produced and co-directed. He faces stiff competition with Coldplay, The Black Eyed Peas and Depeche Mode also battling for the award and The Black-Eye Peas won.

The stop-motion music video has been viewed more than 10 million times on YouTube.

Lavie’s manager, Mike Savage understands that the competition for the award is very tough, but also knows that this could be just what Lavie needs to boost his career.

“If somehow the dark horse wins out, it would be huge for [Lavie] right now,” said Savage, about his client who released his last album on his own label.

The night wasn’t only a celebration for Lavie. A gallery was also set up for photographer Eyal Landesman, who shot all 2,096 photos that were used for the music video.

Lavie announced during his performance that there will be multiple galleries set up around the world where they will be attempting to sell all of the original photos from the video. Lavie confessed that he and everyone else involved loved the video so much that they couldn’t just let it be over.

“We’re trying to sell 2,096 photographs … which could take up to 25 years,” said Lavie through a bit of laughter.

The tentative locations for possible future galleries are New York City, Berlin, and Tel Aviv to go along with the gallery already set up in Santa Monica.
