Stand Up With Lee Evans

BBC America presents the U.S. premiere of Lee Evans’ (There’s Something About Mary, Mouse Hunt, The Medallion) latest stand-up routine, Lee Evans: XL, filmed in Cardiff during his sold-out 2005 tour. The performance shows Evans at his most hilarious and energetic as he explores 22 years of marriage and plays a song for his clueless pet fish on the mandolin – all performed with his trademark physicality. Lee Evans: XL premieres Saturday, May 13, 2006 8 p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT.

Described by Time Out London as “the biggest thing in stand up right now,” ex-boxer Evans has earned both the Time Out Award for comedy and the prestigious Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival. Although a hit in the stand-up world, Evans’s talent goes way beyond the comedy club. He starred in the London production of The Producers opposite Nathan Lane and alongside theatre legend Michael Gambon in Beckett’s Endgame. His extensive film credits also include the Oscar®-nominated short Brooms by the creators of Stomp and the all-action feature Highbinders with Jackie Chan.

In Lee Evans: XL he takes on the indignities of every day life, for example, wanting to talk to someone at the bank, but instead having to “listen to Lionel Ritchie for 20 minutes — all for the privilege of talking to a machine at the end of it.” He’s also worried about devices that come with a help line, “They’re basically saying, ‘this ain’t going to work.’” Lee Evans also has a live show at New York City’s 37 Arts Theatre May 19 - June 3, 2006.
