Model at Petro Zillia

BeansTalk: What was different about the make up for each one?

Sharon Gault: For all the shows the focus was on the eyes, but the inspiration that I drew upon from the clothes is what made the emphasis different. For Pegah Anvarian, the inspiration for her collection was Fall in New York. I tried to compliment this by using a soft pallete of colors on the eye in a style that was inspired by Diana Ross in the movie "Mahogany." Our cosmetic sponsors for the show was a new company called Beverly Hills Woman, and the colors of their eye-shadow palette was just beautiful in achieving this look. For the Pegah Anvarian show, I was sponsored by a new cosmetics brand called Beverly Hills Woman and I found that their powder eye shadows worked beautifully to compliment the soft appearance of Pegah's clothes.

For the Petro Zillia show (model is seen above), the makeup look that was inspired by the clothes was reminiscent of a 1970's discotheques look. The look was very similar to that of the Helmut Newton Sex Star's of the 1970's. I wanted to make a very sexy, smoky eye in earth tones and rich gold colors, particularly because this gives a very sultry look and these colors work well on all skin tones. I used Senna Cosmetics for this show and I used their eye shadow palette in brown, taupe, and gold. I always prefer to keep the skin just looking well moisturized and healthy so I used Senna translucent cream to powder foundation to just embellish the natural skin tones of the models. For the Petro Zillia show, because I wanted to use browns and more earth tones that would work well on all skin tones, I loved my color choices from Senna Cosmetics Fall Palette. I also love their black eyeliner in Noir to help create that sharp, catlike shape to the eye which really emphasizes the sultry attitude of a smokey eye.

For the Gaelyn & Cianfarani show, whose designs and fabric choices are inspired by the concept of, "the Modern approaching the traditional" and very earthy inspirations, I used one of my favorite brands, Tony & Tina Cosmetics. They have a wonderful cream eye shadow palette which consists of very rich colors in green, deep blue, browns and golds that remind me of colors inspired by the Himalayan Mountains and the texture of the cream eye shadows gives a very rich, moist appearance that mimics the feel of soil and the depth of rock formations. In the Gaelyn & Cianfarani show, I really loved the result from Tony & Tina's cream eyeshadows and what I did that helped emphasize the depth of the colors was I used one of my favorite mascaras, Tony and Tina Herbal Mascara, and I put green mascara on the bottom lashes and Blue mascara on the top lashes. I love mixing colors and experimenting with makeup in this way.

B: What were the runway trends?

SG: I like to describe this season’s runway trends as intellectually diverse. All the designers were unique and different. They each had different inspirations that they drew upon to create their collections and I felt they were able to manifest them in a creative, wearable and mature way that really displayed their talent. I am excited to see that fashion experts, such as Anna Wintour, are interested in the talent these designers that showed in Los Angeles have to offer the fashion world.

B: Were there any challenges in doing the makeup -- did you have rushes of where you had to clean someone up completely and start again after you'd just done them for one show? How do you do it? What do you use to remove makeup?

SG: One thing that is difficult during the pressure of a fashion show is to create the sharp lines that emphasize the cat like shape of the eye, like for the look I did at Petro Zillia. In order to create such a sharp look, with out sacrificing time, is to use scotch tape or the edge of a business card at the corner of the eye to create that sharp point in no time and with ease. This trick gives you such a precise edge.
