 American Family: Anniversary Edition

A Two-Hour Film Version Offers Viewers a Window into the Original
12-Hour Landmark 1973 Series That Changed Television History

PBS Facebook Fans Can Watch the Two-Hour Film Online Beginning June 27;
Filmmakers to Participate in Live Online Chat on July 7

AN AMERICAN FAMILY: ANNIVERSARY EDITION, a 2-hour version of the original 12-hour reality series that changed television history, will air Thursday, July 7, 2011, 8:00-10:00 p.m. ET (check local listings) on PBS. AN AMERICAN FAMILY: ANNIVERSARY EDITION will provide viewers a window into the groundbreaking series, which has not been seen nationwide on PBS for more than 20 years. In the New York area, the documentary will air on Friday, July 8, 2011, 9:30-11:30 p.m. ET on THIRTEEN. Viewers can also watch excerpts from the original series and one full episode at:  http://www.pbs.org/programs/american-family/.

Filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond, who worked on the original landmark production, have now adapted the 12-hour series into a new two-hour feature-length compilation of the most memorable and compelling moments of the series.  AN AMERICAN FAMILY: ANNIVERSARY EDITION provides a fresh perspective to viewers who may have missed the original series airing nearly 40 years ago.

Beginning on Monday, June 27, fans of the PBS Facebook page can watch the full two-hour Anniversary Edition of the film. Additionally, filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond will discuss the film in a live online chat on Thursday, July 7 at 2 p.m. ET.

Originally aired on PBS in 1973, AN AMERICAN FAMILY was the most controversial and talked-about television program of its time. In the course of its three-month run, the 12-part series riveted the country and drew in a record 10 million viewers a week. In the years since it was first broadcast, the series has become the subject of lengthy articles and reviews, including panel discussions with anthropologist Margaret Mead, who speculated that AN AMERICAN FAMILY could be the beginning of a new way to explore the complexities of contemporary reality, “maybe as important for our time as were the invention of drama and the novel for earlier generations,”  In 2002, TV Guide named AN AMERICAN FAMILY one of the Top 50 Greatest Television Shows of All Time.

The original 1973 series AN AMERICAN FAMILY stepped into the home of the Loud family of Santa Barbara, California, chronicling the lives of its family members. The series made parents Pat and Bill Loud and their five children Lance, Delilah, Grant, Kevin and Michele Loud household names. During the seven months that the family lived under the microscope of the camera, viewers watched significant life moments unfold including Pat Loud asking for a separation from her husband Bill Loud, as well as a glimpse into the New York lifestyle of their gay son, Lance Loud.

Unlike most documentaries of its day, AN AMERICAN FAMILY had no host, no interviews and almost no voice-over narration. Producer Craig Gilbert and filmmakers Alan and Susan Raymond portrayed everyday life without embellishment in the style of cinéma verité. The first episode was broadcast by PBS on Thursday evening, January 11, 1973 at 9:00 p.m.

AN AMERICAN FAMILY: ANNIVERSARY EDITION was produced by Alan Raymond and Susan Raymond. Edited by Alan Raymond. Supervising Producer: Charlotte Mangin. Original Series Conceived and Produced by Craig Gilbert. For WNET: Executive In Charge of Production Stephen Segaller. For WLIW: General Manager John Servidio. A WLIW production in association with PBS and WNET.

Life in suburban Serenity, Ohio is never quite as serene as it appears. The dysfunctional Burnett family – Bunnie (Hope Davis), Jack (Dermot Mulroney) and their twin 17 year olds Eric (Max Thieriot) and Kelly (Britt Robertson) – seems like a lost cause.  When a freak accident leaves Bunnie with a case of amnesia, the Burnetts get an unexpected second chance at happiness. Meanwhile, next door neighbor Simon (Chi McBride) is relieved that his tryst gone wrong with Bunnie remains undetected, at least for the moment.  Before long, a slew of past relationships, kids with guns, a suicidal teacher, a very zealous religious club, misinterpreted advances, corporate down-sizing, and one fateful squirrel combine to create enough mayhem to test the resolve, sanity and future of any family!

THE FAMILY TREE, starring Hope Davis, Dermot Mulroney, Max Thieriot, Britt Robertson, Chi McBride, Keith Carradine, Madeline Zima, Shad “Bow Wow” Moss, Christina Hendricks, Gabrielle Anwar, Evan Handler, and Jane Seymour, is a hilarious, touching, and offbeat comedy which explores the frailties and complexities of the contemporary American family – and what it takes to survive in a suburban jungle.  After all, every family has its hang-ups.

BBC's Outnumbered Comes to U.S.

Outnumbered, the multi-award-winning comedy series captures the turbulent chaos of family life in a way not seen before – at its most deliciously chaotic moments.  Two parents, played by Hugh Dennis and Claire Skinner, and their three children are locked in an unequal battle. Using elements of improvisation, Outnumbered sees the world as much from the children's as the adults' point of view. The parents constantly try to keep their children under control, but completely fail to do so.  Eleven-year-old Jake worries about everything from starting at his new school to the world being sucked into a black hole, seven-year-old Ben constantly lies to his parents and always wants to watch Little Britain, and five-year-old Karen seems to have a limitless number of questions.  Outnumbered premieres Saturday, July 30, 11:00pm ET/PT on BBC America.

Dentist Dr. Jonathan B. Levine, DMD talked about two breakthrough cancer screening tests on Dr. Oz: the Velscope and the CDX brush

Facts about Oral Cancer
•             37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year.
•             It will cause over 8,000 deaths this year
•             killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day.
•             Of those 36,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years.

Only 15% of the population has had an oral examination, yet Oral Cancer is one of the easiest cancers to spot and diagnose.

New screening tests make it simple and painless to diagnose oral cancer:

The Velscope can see very early changes in the cells in the mouth where they become dysplastic or unhealthy. The VELscope's blue-spectrum light causes the soft tissues of the mouth to naturally fluoresce, looking like a green apple color.  If there is an abnormality, a dysplasia or unhealthy cell, you will see the green color turn black.

If abnormal tissue appears, there is a 2nd revolutionary screening test, the Oral CDX brush.  This test is like a pap smear for your mouth.  The pap smear has had a huge impact on survival rates for cervical cancer, since routine use, cervical cancer has gone from being the 2nd to the 11th leading cause of death.

Dr. Levine speaks about these screening tests and about how to prevent Oral cancer including:
o             Limiting alcohol consumption and tobacco use
o             Limit exposure to UV radiation – excessive sun to avoid
o             Practice safe sex
o             Eat foods high in anti-oxidants
