Who Wore Weitzmans?

Stuart Weitzman shoes have always been popular at award shows. This year's Emmys were no different. Here's a list of who wore which pair of Weitzman's:

Best actress in comedy nominee Amy Poehler (seen here with husband, actor Will Arnett, only three weeks after giving birth) chose gunmetal snakeskin LILLE platforms (Stephanie Pratt and Jessica Lowndes have worn the style on the red carpet, too)

Presenter Maura Tierney opted for the oyster SUGAR peep-toe

CBS Early Show’s Nancy O’Dell wore silver glitter AVALON platforms (Carrie Underwood wore these as her wedding shoe)

Daily Show’s Olivia Munn (seen here) donned gold DELOVELY platforms

True Blood stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer got married this past weekend and wore wedding bands that were handmade by their friend Cathy Waterman. Waterman also designed Paquin’s platinum and diamond engagement ring. Paquin is seen above here in a scene from her upcoming film, "The Romantics" (in this scene, she marries Josh Duhamel). Moyer's Bill is now likely not to go the way of the novel's series' character, but will have a more prominent role than ever (and while we watch True Blood and love the supporting cast, we are very, very tired of Bill and Paquin's Sookie -- more of the King! more of the Queen! And certainly, more Sam and Eric!).

Trivia for Today

Recently, PBS re-aired the "Poirot" Season 11 episode of "Cat Among the Pidgeons." We noticed, that in addition to actress Katie Leung, Cho Chang of "Harry Potter" that not one, but two actresses who have played dastardly Mrs. Fanny Ferrars Dashwood in two productions of "Sense and Sensibility" are also featured.

Clare Skinner, who played self-concerned Fanny in the excellent 2008 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel, plays teacher Miss Ross in the Poirot film. Harriet Walker also played Fanny, but in the 1995 Emma Thompson-written/starring version, directed by Ang Lee, plays Miss Bulstrode, head mistress of the girl's school in "Cat."

And in another note of coincidence, school administrator Ann Shapland is played by pretty Natasha Little, who starred as lead character Becky Sharpe in the 1998 version of "Vanity Fair," and subsequently co-starred in the bigger budgeted Reese Witherspoon-starring 2004 take on Henry Fielding's novel as Lady Jane Sheepshanks.

Deanna Durbin Films
on DVD
for the
First Time

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and Universal Studios Home Entertainment (USHE) have made five films featuring Universal singing sensation Deanna Durbin available on home video for the first time. The titles include Mad About the Music (1938), That Certain Age (1938), Three Smart Girls Grow Up (1939), Because of Him (1946) and For the Love of Mary (1948). The films are part of the TCM Vault Collection Presented by Universal, an extensive partnership to offer classic movie fans rare vintage films, all digitally remastered.

The five-disc Deanna Durbin: The Music and Romance Collection is currently available by request on DVD exclusively via tcm.com. TCM host Robert Osborne introduces the titles, which include extensive supplemental materials compiled by TCM and material from the TCM archives. Among the highlights are an exclusive interview with John Pasternak, brother of producer Joe Pasternak, the man who discovered Deanna Durbin and made her a star, as well as original movie posters, lobby cards, color publicity stills, behind-the-scenes photos and more.

"This collection is a one-of-a-kind treasure because Deanna Durbin was such a unique, delightful screen presence,” said Osborne. “Until now, so many of her movies have been unavailable on home video, making these DVDs like finding gold. Not only do they showcase Deanna’s wonderful singing and charm, they also give viewers the chance to enjoy the long-unseen work of such co-stars as OscarÃ’ winners Charles Laughton, Melvyn Douglas and others.”

Deanna Durbin, who was born Edna Mae Durbin in Winnipeg, Canada, was a shy teenager when she was initially pursued by MGM as a new singing star. The studio decided to offer a then unknown Judy Garland a contract instead. Universal, realizing Durbin’s wholesome appeal and pleasing vocal style, signed her up. Even though Durbin’s desire to be an actress stemmed from wanting to supplement her struggling parents’ income, she became a phenomenally popular star. Her string of box office hits helped save Universal from bankruptcy during the late 1930s and early 1940s.

The following are the five Deanna Durbin films being made available. They can be purchased as a box set or as individual titles:

Mad About the Music (1938) – To fit in with her classmates, a lonely 14-year-old American girl in a boarding school in Switzerland invents a fictitious father, leading to comical complications. Nominated for four Academy AwardsÃ’, including Best Cinematography and Best Music Scoring, and co-starring Herbert Marshall, Deanna Durbin’s third feature film features such songs as “A Serenade To The Stars,” “Chapel Bells” and her rendition of “Ave Maria.”

That Certain Age (1938) – When young Alice develops a serious crush on her father’s dashing reporter friend, she loses interest in her teen-age boyfriend and their plans to put on a fundraising variety show. Melvyn Douglas and Jackie Cooper co-star in this charming farce, which earned two OscarÃ’ nominations, including one for the song, “My Own.” Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett were among the screenplay’s contributing writers.

Three Smart Girls Grow Up (1939) – Penny, who has a knack for matchmaking, realizes her own two sisters, Joan and Kay, could use her unsolicited help, especially because one of them is in love with the other’s boyfriend. Often noted for giving Deanna Durbin her first mature role, this breezy, lighthearted valentine to Durbin is directed by Henry Koster (The Bishop’s Wife) and co-stars Robert Cummings and William Lundigan.

Because of Him (1946) – A young waitress with dreams of stardom tries to pass herself off as an experienced actress and even succeeds in winning the coveted role opposite a famous theater star. Charles Laughton and Franchot Tone are among the distinguished supporting cast. The score includes “Good Bye,” “Danny Boy,” and the Rodgers & Hart tune “Lover.”

For the Love of Mary (1948)

Mary, a White House telephone operator, is so popular with co-workers that the President of the United States and four Supreme Court justices end up trying to play Cupid for her. This screwball comedy marked Deanna Durbin’s final screen appearance. The cinematography is by four-time Academy Award nominee William H. Daniels (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof). Musical selections include “Moonlight Bay” and “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.”

Previous Universal titles released under the TCM Vault Collection Presented by Universal banner include a collection of early Cary Grant films; the unsung holiday classic Remember the Night (1940), starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck; and the Universal Cult Horror Collection.

Minogue Update

Kylie Minogue's single ”All The Lovers” climbs from #3 to #1 after eight weeks on the chart. “All The Lovers” is Minogue’s fourth career #1 single on the Billboard Club Chart and her first since “Slow” hit #1 in 2004. “All The Lovers” is the first single from her recently released 11th studio album Aphrodite. The Joseph Kahn (Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Katy Perry) directed video premiered on MTV’s LOGO last month and is also being played on Music Choice.

Aphrodite features Stuart Price as Executive Producer. The album debuted at #19, marking Minogue highest U.S. chart position since 2002’s Fever. The list of songwriters includes Minogue, Stuart Price, Calvin Harris, the Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, Nerina Pallot, Swedish House Mafia, NERVO and Keane’s Tim Rice-Oxley.

People Magazine said “Minogue delivers what may be the best start-to-finish album of her career” and Billboard Magazine agrees saying Aphrodite is “… cohesive, fun, and fitting for a goddess.” Aphrodite became Kylie’s fifth #1 album in the UK, hitting the top spot a full 22 years to the week since her debut album Kylie entered the chart. The album also made Kylie the first solo artist in the history of the UK charts to have a #1 album in four different decades. Around the globe Aphrodite debuted in the top 10 in thirteen different countries including #1 in Mexico, #2 in Australia, Switzerland and Spain, #3 in Austria, France and Germany and top 5 in Belgium, Holland, Ireland and Taiwan #8 in Canada and Japan. Kylie recently graced the June/July cover of Blackbook Magazine and the August cover of Out Magazine.

In the Fall of 2009, Minogue toured the U.S. and sold out her first ever North American tour. The six-city tour kicked off in Oakland with stops in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto and New York, wowing fans and critics alike at each stop. Entertainment Weekly called the show a “two-hour post-disco fantasia of strobe, bass, and glitter—an all-out spectacle.” The New York Times claimed “The concert (was) efficient, clobbering, expensive, generous…close to an alternate reality.” Kylie treated her U.S. fans with a new song “Better Than Today” which she played for the first time during the tour. Minogue is expected to make an announcement about a 2011 world tour soon.

Pick Up Styx

STYX--Tommy Shaw (vocals, guitars), James “JY” Young (vocals, guitars), Lawrence Gowan (vocals, keyboards), Todd Sucherman (drums) and Ricky Phillips (bass), along with the occasional surprise appearance by original bassist Chuck Panozzo—will tour and play their two albums "Grand Illusion" and "Pieces of Eight" in its entirety.

Along with the classic hits, the band will be performing 1977's THE GRAND ILLUSION and 1978's PIECES OF EIGHT in their entirety. Both albums featured hits like "Come Sail Away," "Renegade," "Blue Collar Man" and "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).”

A seven-song EP, entitled REGENERATION, VOLUME 1, contains six newly re-recorded classics--"Come Sail Away,” "Crystal Ball," "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man),” “Lorelei,” “The Grand Illusion” and “Sing For The Day”—and a brand new track, “Difference In The World,” will be available for sale at each stop along “The Grand Illusion/Pieces Of Eight” October/November tour route.

“This is the most unique STYX concert ever,” says singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw. “It's a hybrid experience of enjoying the artistry of the vinyl album and the energy and of our live performance. Some songs have never been performed live!”

The band began in a suburban Chicago basement in the early ‘70s. STYX evolved into the virtual arena rock prototype by the late '70s and early '80s. Over the course of a 38-year career they released 15 studio albums, six best-of compilations and four live albums, garnering eight Top Ten singles. STYX has sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.

On the touring front, STYX has performed more shows since ’99 than all of the previous years of its career combined. Two Super-Bowl appearances, Pollstar box office chart-topping tours with Def Leppard, Journey, Boston, REO Speedwagon, Bad Company, Foreigner (to name a few), two more studio albums and no end in sight, STYX continues to conquer the planet, one venue at a time.

What's Up With Iggy Pop

On Friday, 3 September 2010, Iggy and the Stooges put themselves "In The Hands of the Fans...."

MVD Entertainment Group launched www.InTheHandsOfTheFans.com to offer fans an opportunity to film and interview Iggy and the Stooges performing the seminal punk rock song "Raw Power" at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival on September 3, 2010. Six fans will be chosen by way of a video submission contest to join director Joey Carey on location at the Stardust Theater at Kutchers' Country Club in Monticello, NY. This marks the reunion between Iggy Pop and powerhouse guitarist James Williamson as well as original Stooges drummer Scott "Rock Action" Asheton. Also featuring Mike Watt on bass and Steve Mackay on saxophone.

The contest is based on fans submitting short high definition video segments asking Iggy and the Stooges interview questions, or demonstrating why they should win the contest. Winners of the contest will film and interview Iggy and the Stooges at All Tomorrow's Parties. This fan shot footage, along with the contestant video submissions, will be crafted into a high definition longform program, which will be part concert film and part reality TV show about the journey of the fans.

"Raw Power is one of the greatest, most dangerous albums in the history of rock and roll" says Ed Seaman, C.O.O. of MVD Entertainment Group. "We are honored to enable the fans this connection with the band; this will be a dream come true for the winners."

IN THE HANDS OF THE FANS will be sustainable as a series; MVD is already deep in discussions with a number of other artists and expects to have five more programs shot within the next six months with new announcements expected any day.

The final program for Iggy and the StoogesIN THE HANDS OF THE FANS is expected to release on DVD, BluRay, digital download and broadcast by early 2011. All contestants will receive a special offer to purchase the film early along with some exclusive value added content.

A commercial featuring Handsome Dick Manitoba (the Dictators, Little Steven's Underground Garage DJ) and Iggy has been recorded and will be distributed throughout the web via websites, social media networks, blogs, etc.

Dirty Dancing Songs and Charity

(From Randy Alexander)

On the one-year anniversary of Patrick Swayze’s death approaching in September, please note the charitable efforts of the songwriters responsible for the “Dirty Dancing” smash hits “Time of My Life” and “Hungry Eyes.”

With a blessing from Lisa Niemi Swayze, Patrick’s wife, Franke Previte (ex-Franke and the Knockouts), John De Nicola and Don Markowitz – who won the Oscar and Golden Globe for their “Dirty Dancing” contribution - are honoring their friend’s memory and raising money for the Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Resarch Foundation at Stanford by releasing the historic “Original Demo Recordings” of those songs, and more. They’re coming out digitally Sept. 8 – a week shy of the first anniversary of Patrick’s untimely passing.

Franke had an unforgettable moment at the Academy Awards with Patrick:

“He told me that the Dirty Dancing dance finale scene was actually shot to my original demo of ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’,” Franke recalls. “I had performed the song with my duet partner, Rachele Cappelli. Patrick explained that the movie was filmed out of sequence and the finale scene was the first thing they shot. And, there was a lot riding on getting it right. He said it was crucial that he, Jennifer and the rest of the cast filming that scene develop an immediate camaraderie and that the demo was a big part in helping them do just that. The film’s most memorable scene really had been filmed to our demo of ‘(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life’.”

When Patrick was ill, Franke watched his friend’s courageous battle against pancreatic cancer with so much admiration. And, when we lost him, it reminded him again of how much his immense talent and heart contributed to the success of Dirty Dancing. Now more than ever, his time has come to most effectively give back to the project and the promise from the film’s music supervisor Jimmy Ienner, upon encouraging him to submit his music to the soundtrack, would “change his life.”

You can sample the “Time of My Life” demo here: www.myspace.com/dirtydancingdemos.

Trivia note: The drummer in Franke and the Knockouts, the early ‘80s pop band best known for their Top 10 hit “Sweetheart,” was Tico Torres, who went on to join Bon Jovi! Hey, it’s a Jersey thing, ya know?)

Fans Can Own A Piece of Hollywood History…

… And Support The Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund at Stanford

For the first time ever, the writers of “(I’VE HAD) THE TIME OF MY LIFE” and “HUNGRY EYES” are releasing THE ORIGINAL DEMOS of the songs that rocketed the DIRTY DANCING soundtrack to No. 1 on the Billboard charts for 18 straight weeks. And, today, at 48 million copies sold worldwide, it still stands as one of the bestselling albums of all time.

Franke Previte, John De Nicola and Don Markowitz are releasing the digital-only four-song package DIRTY DANCING: THE ORIGINAL DEMOS on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2010. Included are two versions of the Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning smash, “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” -- originally sung by Previte, noted frontman of ‘80s hit makers Franke and the Knockouts (“Sweetheart”), as a duet with Rachele Cappelli.

This is the actual recording that Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey danced to when filming the unforgettable grand finale dance scene in the movie.

The other demo version is a sharp new remix of the No. 1 blockbuster by its original producer, the renowned Michael Lloyd. Fan favorite and No. 4 Billboard hit, “Hungry Eyes,” written by Previte and De Nicola and sung by Franke, brings home another big song from the film. Rounding out the set is “Someone Like You,” another Previte/De Nicola original written for Bill Medley. An instrumental version of the tune is currently heard in the stage play, Broadway-bound Dirty Dancing: The Musical. The live show continues the Dirty Dancing phenomenon, setting box office records worldwide.

Previte began thinking about the historical significance of the demos after being interviewed with De Nicola as part of the “Dirty Dancing: Limited Keepsake Edition” project, released on DVD and Blu Ray this spring by Lionsgate. In it, Dirty Dancing choreographer, Kenny Ortega, (Michael Jackson’s, This Is It) and Eleanor Bergstein, the film’s writer and co-producer, also drove home the impact the original demos had on Swayze and Grey.

But, Previte laughs when he remembers he and his writing partners almost didn’t get the chance to make history with their songs: “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life” was the last song on the last tape submitted on the last day for the movie’s final scene,”” he recalls. “But, everyone loved it!”

And it ended up galvanizing the cast, prompting Ortega to cast aside a Lionel Richie track in favor of the song that helped make the movie a huge box office hit and defined the coming-of-age romance for the actors and audiences. Previte didn’t find out just what an impact the demos had on the actors until the night of the Academy Awards, 1988, when he met Swayze at an after-party.

“Patrick said, ‘I need to know who sang the demo tape!,’” says Previte. “And I said, ‘I did, with Rachele Capelli. Why?’ ‘Because we filmed out of sequence and that last scene was the first thing we filmed. As soon as your demo played, everyone knew that was our song.’”

Because no songs better defined the career of Patrick Swayze than the hits of Dirty Dancing, Previte, De Nicola and Markowitz want to honor their friend. They’ve decided to donate a generous portion of the proceeds of DIRTY DANCING: THE ORIGINAL DEMOS package to the Patrick Swayze Pancreas Cancer Research Fund at Stanford Cancer Center. The Fund was established by Patrick’s beloved wife and partner, Lisa Niemi Swayze, at the medical institution where her husband was treated for the extent of his courageous battle.

“I feel this is the right thing to do and the right time to do it,” says Previte. “We salute and honor our friend, Patrick Swayze, for his courage, generosity and talent.”

As Swayze told Previte on the night of the Academy Awards … “We filmed the finale to your demo and it gave us a camaraderie we didn’t have before. The scene just came out so phenomenally that it created the rest of what everyone knows Dirty Dancing to be. Because of that song, we knew then that we had the makings of a tremendous hit!”

Swayze said it all.

DIRTY DANCING: THE ORIGINAL DEMOS will be available through CD Baby on iTunes and all major digital download destinations.
