Love Paul Williams, Hate the Director of this Doc

Paul Williams is So Cool

This documentary, now out on DVD, was recently shown on cable. We loved seeing Paul Williams -- he is doing well, is gracious and fun.

The director of this documentary, Stephen Kessler, SUCKS.  We actually posted a review on IMDB. Let us look for it and post it here.

Our review on IMDB:

Whether realized or not, Paul Williams has had a tremendous musical impact on my generation. Easily the redeeming factor of this film are the juxtapositions of Williams in his heyday and Williams today.

The documentary is populated with gasp-inducing ("I remember that!" "I saw that when it aired!") moments, terrific vintage clips, and good interviews, especially with his long-time band leader.

Williams comes off completely accessible and a very self-aware guy. The tragedy of this entire project is the fact that the person at the film's helm is Stephen Kessler, who is intrusive, obnoxious, paranoid, xenophobic, and, most of all, so self-absorbed that every action Williams makes (a tour of Vegas, to the Philippines, etc.) is about him. Not 30 flippin' seconds go by in this documentary, where Kessler isn't self-referential.

Williams is shockingly gracious despite Kessler's repeated attempts at "gotcha" moments. Kessler is so arrogant that he actually interrupts Williams' poignant childhood memory. He's the kind of "reporter" (term used very loosely) who isn't listening to his subject. Kessler has an agenda, and no matter how many times he refers to Williams as his "idol," that agenda is a despicable one. Kessler's "fame" (Oscar for a short film) wasn't even a blip on the entertainment scene and he is determined to make this film about him.

If only Kessler had used this amazing opportunity to showcase Williams -- who is certainly as interesting and engaging as he'd been at the height of his fame -- this could have been a very remarkable film portrait. It wouldn't even have had to be a tribute; Williams shows moments of curmudgeonly behavior (and really, who wouldn't be, in Kessler's presence), but Williams' humor and undeniable talent deserve a showcase.

Kessler repeatedly (and cringing-ly) keeps asking questions that are the equivalent of "how does it feel to have been so famous and to become so irrelevant?" The truly horrible moment is when Kessler (who clearly has been chomping at the bit, stalking Williams for two years for this opportunity) makes Williams awkwardly and uncomfortably sit through a late 70s-vintage television clip of a clearly high, Williams hosting the "Mike Douglas Show."

Kessler wants to make a film about himself, and frame it with a compelling subject like Williams. For Williams -- who generously consented to Kessler's cameras AND provided him with boxes of videos for the documentary (without these contributions there would be absolutely no film) -- this film provides a reminder of Williams. But he deserves so much better.

Here's the press release for the DVD:

Paul Williams was everywhere in the 1970s - on records, the radio, TV and movies - but he suddenly walked away from it all, and a new generation of pop music lovers has no idea who he is. Director Stephen Kessler sets out to remedy that situation in PAUL WILLIAMS: STILL ALIVE. Kessler's "fascinating" (Entertainment Weekly) and "endearing" (Paste) film about his journey to find his musical hero will bring the songwriting genius to longtime fans and new listeners alike when it arrives on DVD on February 5, 2013, from Virgil Films. The music-filled documentary has an SRP of $19.99.

Even if you don't know songwriter Paul Williams, you know his timeless classics, such as the Carpenters' "We've Only Just Begun" and "Rainy Days and Mondays," Barbra Streisand's "Evergreen," Three Dog Night's "Just an Old Fashioned Love Song" and the Muppets' "Rainbow Connection." Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and David Bowie, among other giants, have recorded his songs. He has won Grammys and an Oscar, made his own hit records, had a busy acting career, including starring in "Smokey and the Bandit" and Brian DePalma's "The Phantom of the Paradise," and made 50 appearances on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show."

But where has he been for the last 20 years? Stephen Kessler ("Vegas Vacation") wanted to know, so he set out to find Williams. The result is an exhilarating film about a fan finally meeting his hero and getting him to open up about his career and why he seemed to simply give it all up. The revelations in PAUL WILLIAMS: STILL ALIVE will stun and move fans, particularly when Williams opens up about his personal struggles and his triumphant return to the music industry as the president of ASCAP.

A wistful musical journey that will reintroduce a new generation to Williams' soulful classics, PAUL WILLIAMS: STILL ALIVE is the charmingly self-narrated story of what happens when a nostalgic filmmaker finally catches up with his hero.

Wrote Betsy Sharkey in the Los Angeles Times: "Filmmaker Stephen Kessler's sheer delight in following around his boyhood idol, whose music framed much of the '70s when Kessler was a lad in Queens, is thoroughly infectious."

New Aaron Neville

Aaron Neville

Aaron Neville's "My True Story"

My True Story, the new album from soul/R&B legend and multiple Grammy Award-winning artist Aaron Neville, is out today on Blue Note Records. The album, produced by Blue Note Records President Don Was and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, finds Neville revitalizing some of his favorite songs from the doo-wop era that have become the underpinning for all of the remarkable music he has created across five decades. (Watch a video about the making of My True Story here.)

NPR has already weighed in on My True Story, stating “it’s not trying to make doo-wop sound contemporary so much as dislodge it from its time capsule and free it to drift across eras…It's that unmistakable affection, dispensed with [Neville’s] sweet voice that's lost none of its considerable luster, which makes My True Storyresonate as more than a mere footnote in Neville's half-century of music. It's a labor of love, to be sure, but the singer and his cohorts try something bold, too: They celebrate these relics in ways that make them feel relevant to the future.”The Wall Street Journal has called My True Story “unfettered Aaron Neville. With Mr. Richards on guitar and featuring an exceptional performance by New Orleans drummer George G. Receli, the singer with the unmistakable tenor has been liberated from the constraints of middle-of-the-road pop to perform the glorious music of his youth.”

In connection with the release of My True Story, Neville is making a series of high-profile appearances, including performances on The Today Show on January 23rd and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on January 29th, a featured interview on NPR’s Morning Edition on January 24th, and a sit-down interview on PBS’Tavis Smiley that airs in February (check local listings). Neville also performed on WNYC’s Soundcheck which airs on January 23rd between 9 and 10 pm ET on 93.9 FM and will be posted here, and delivered a performance for NPR’s “Free At Noon” concert series that was broadcast live from Philadelphia’s World CafĂ© (listen here). In addition, PBS will air the special Aaron Neville: Doo Wop: My True Story — a concert filmed in November at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl — in March 2013.

Neville will also be honored by the Grammy Museum, which is celebrating Neville’s career with an intimate discussion and performance hosted by Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli. An Evening With Aaron Neville, presented by American Express, will be held in the Clive Davis Theater on January 28th at 8 p.m. All ticket proceeds benefit the GRAMMY Museum. For more information, visit grammymuseum.org.

Last week, it was announced that Neville will headline the 2013 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, which takes place in Neville’s hometown from April 26th through May 5th. Neville will perform on the final Sunday, closing out the Gentilly Stage with his Quintet.

In addition, Neville has been selected as the featured artist on this year’s official Jazz Fest poster, a significant honor as these limited-edition works of art are a cherished part of the festival and quickly become collector’s items that sell out before the end of the event. Previous poster subjects include Louis Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis, Mahalia Jackson, and Fats Domino, among many other artists connected to the great city of New Orleans. The Neville limited-edition silkscreen poster was designed by James Michalopoulos and is available from www.art4now.com.

Neville will return to the road in support of My True Story in the spring, including headlining slots at the Tri-C Jazz Fest in Cleveland and the Houston International Festival. Please see below for dates. Please see below for dates.

We Fell for Fall

All we knew was that the tiny poster advertising it on Netflix was pretty. "Fall" is challenging, emotional, whirlwind of a film. Directed by Tarsem Singh, it's far from perfect, perhaps a little messy, but beautiful and stars the most brilliant child actress since, well, we're not sure. Catinca Untaru is breathtaking, heartbreaking and AMAZING. She is worth the price of admission. A must see, if only for Untaru.

Golden Globe 2013 Winners

The Winners!

Best Actress, Television Comedy, Lena Dunham, star of HBO's "Girls"

BeansTalk note: It was surprising and amazing that Lena Dunham won over Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Zoey Deschanel and Julia Louis-Dreyfus -- who are all flippin' amazing -- but fun to watch her incredibly awkward walk to the stage [clearly the Globes' folks didn't think she had a hope in Hell, seating her so far away]. Still, we adore Dunham and were happy she got the recognition she deserved -- and also loved that she thanked Chad Lowe, later explaining that it was because his then-wife Hillary Swank famously forgot to in her 2000 Oscar-win speech.

On another note, we're finding it very challenging to give credence to an organization that gives Kevin Costner [!] a "Best Actor" award. Foreign press -- what are you thinking??
