Shelby Lynne

Shelby Lynne on Tour

Grammy-award winner Shelby Lynne will kick off a national tour on July 6, 2005, in support of her ninth album, Suit Yourself. Although Lynne will headline most dates, she'll also open select shows for Los Lonely Boys, Chris Isaak and Jonny Lang this summer.

Lynne performed "Go With It," the first single, on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" on the eve of the album's release and also appeared on "Tavis Smiley" in May. "Suit Yourself Live," an hour-long concert performance by Lynne, has been airing each weekend in June as a feature in DIRECTV's FREEVIEW® event series along with a 15-minute film about the making of Suit Yourself. Fans can check out the short film - and four tracks from the upcoming album - at www.shelbylynne.com/sampler. In addition, Lynne's recent performance on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" can be seen at www.kcrw.com.

Lynne produced Suit Yourself, as well as its predecessor, Identity Crisis, her 2003 Capitol debut. Early reviews have been exceptional:

In a four-star review, Blender pronounced Suit Yourself "the best thing she's done since winning the Grammy." "From the celebratory grooves of 'Go With It' to the impressionistic slow-cooker blues of the seven-minute-long closer 'Track 12,' Suit Yourself is organic and quietly powerful," said Interview. "Whether Lynne's singing about a broken heart on the exquisitely dreamy 'I Cry Everyday' or basking in love as comforting as 'cornbread and iced tea' on the stripped-down, shuffling 'Iced Tea,' she has never sounded more at ease in her own skin."

Juan Juan – Brentwood has 28 chairs for stylists and colorists, plus color and treatment mixing areas. A special retail area will be at the front of the salon and will offer high-end hair accessories and wet goods, which will include Wella System Professional and L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert.

The Anastasia Beverly Hills brow studio will have its own space within the salon. An esthetician trained by Anastasia will provide the famous Anastasia Beverly Hills services, such as brow shaping, lash tinting, makeup and eyelash applications, facial hair removal, facials and body waxing. “I started my career at Juan Juan Beverly Hills and I thought collaboration would be wonderful in extending our partnership, it’s a great place for hair and now it will also be a great place for makeup and brows,” says Anastasia Soare. Juan Juan - Brentwood will offer Anastasia Beverly Hills full line of cosmetics, which will include eyebrow and color products.

“The area was in desperate need of a great salon like Juan Juan,” says Jennifer Jahanbigloo. “We are thrilled to be welcomed so warmly into the community.” www.juanjuansalon.com

On The History Channel

Dragon Quest

Quest For Dragons airs Thursday, August 4, 2005 at 8 p.m. 8 to 10 p.m. on The History Channel

The dragon is the best-known creature that never was. Quest For Dragons explores how dragons have influenced virtually every culture throughout time… even killing real people by the thousands. Dragons are described in the Bible, they appear on coats of arms, they’re carved in ancient temples, and still dance in street parades. Native Americans, Mesopotamian tribes, Chinese, Norwegians, Central American Indians, Japanese, Europeans: all conjure dragons with similar characteristics.

But if dragons spring from human imagination, how could isolated cultures invent the same beast? Why would so many people believe dragons are real, even today? It’s beyond coincidence. Dragons have an unparalleled grip on people. Find out where dragons got their start, how they became powerful, lethal, ubiquitous, and inescapable.

Swimwear Summer Survival

Tankini and Skirtini

[Having just purchased a suit similar to the one above, it made BeansTalk realize there may be readers interested in swimwear survival tips. We’ve recently discovered the benefits of the “swimdress,” and now the “skirtini.”]

A Swimsuit Right for Body Type
by Ina Jackson, Christina Swimwear

Tip# 1
Get help from a professional. Choose a store with a wide variety of styles to try on and the staff to help you make the most (or least) of your figure.

Tip#2
The right swimsuit design can maximize, minimize or emphasize what you want it to. So take your time and try on lots of styles and sizes until you find the one that suits you best.

Tip#3
If the suit doesn't fit right it will never feel comfortable. Always start with your dress size and move up a size if necessary.

Tip#4
Once you have a suit on, move in it! Lift your arms...bend...squat...twist...jump up and down. A swimsuit made with spandex will move with you. It hold its shape...and yours.

Tip#5
Bust Enhancer
• bright prints on the top of a suit will help equalize your figure.
• suits with an inner bra will help support and push up your bust.
• look for details at the bust - shirring, buttons or clips will accentuate your bust.

Tip#6
Bust Minimizer
• a structured bra will give you more support and feel comfortable.
• try suits with more coverage at the bust and underarm to give you more freedom of movement.
• look for all over prints to draw the eye away from your bustline.

Tip#7
Waist Minimizer
• look for "tummy tamer". We add an extra panel to the tummy area to give you the support you require.
• princess seams or diagonal inserts can add shape to a straight waist.

Tip#8
Hip Minimizer
• suits with a skirted look cover key problem areas.
• dark colors on the bottom are great minimizers.
• contrasting leg insert will lengthen your body and reduce your hips.

Tip#9
You can never have too many swimsuits. So when you find one that fits right and looks great, buy it in another colour. When traveling you should have several suits so you can wash and dry out each suit beforeyou wear it again.

Tip#10
Show off your suit with pride. Model it for friends and family and let them see the sun goddess that you are!

Straws may save soda lovers' teeth

Reuters

People who savor their soft drinks may save their teeth some wear and tear by using a strategically placed straw, according to a new report.

In excess, carbonated beverages, like other acidic drinks, can wear away the protective enamel on teeth, leading to tooth decay. While going easy on carbonated beverages is the best way to prevent tooth erosion, sipping them through a straw may offer some added protection.

The key, say dentists at Temple University in Philadelphia, is to place the straw near the back of the mouth so that the teeth aren't bathed in soda with every sip.

That advice is based on the cases of two teenagers, whose heavy soda drinking -- between 1 and 3 liters a day -- caused widespread tooth erosion. However, the pattern of tooth damage differed based on how they drank.

In one case, an 18-year-old man regularly downed his soft drinks from cans and cups, and his dental erosion was more extensive in the back teeth and on the right side of his mouth-where he had the habit of holding his soda for a while before swallowing it.

In contrast, a 16-year-old girl who habitually sipped her soda through a straw developed extensive erosion in her front teeth. Since she normally placed her straw just inside her lips, these are teeth that would mainly be exposed to soft drink acids.

The cases suggest that using a straw -- as long as it's placed near the back of the mouth -- may lower the odds of tooth decay by limiting the contact between soda and teeth, according to Dr. Mohamed A. Bassiouny.

He and his colleague at Temple's School of Dentistry, Dr. Jie Yang, describe the two cases in the current issue of the journal General Dentistry.

"Your best option is to sip soft drinks and other beverages through a straw positioned toward the back of the mouth," Bassiouny said in a statement.

But, he added, making a habit out of drinking soda instead of water "may cause significant, irreversible long-term problems and damage."

Besides cutting back on soda and keeping straws handy, people should avoid drinking soda before bed, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. That's true even for conscientious brushers, as brushing the teeth right after having a soft drink can damage the acid-weakened enamel.

Jessica Alba: Did She Dodge That Bullet??

The Latest from the TomKat Rumor Mill

[FROM BeansTalk: This entire message was sent to BeansTalk. Meaning, WE DIDN'T WRITE IT, THIS IS NOT OUR BREAKING STORY or SOURCE. It's just really interesting. FYI, the Independent Sources link was removed within hours - the original source better be sure to check their credit and phone bills. You know they're on THE LIST. BTW, Someone else at Warner Brothers corroborated this rumor to BeansTalk.]

This is where the email begins:

"A friend of mine just got back from LA and heard this scoop about Tom & Katie from someone who works at Universal. The source said that they (Tom & Katie) have a five-year contract and he's paying her $8 million. The engagement happened so fast because Rob Thomas' (Matchbox 20) wife caught Rob and and Tom in bed together and they rushed the engagement so that it would overshadow that scandal. Obviously, take it with a grain of salt.

Read below. This was just published.

Independent Sources

Independent Sources Confirms Existence of Tom Cruise/Rob Thomas Rumor

Independent Sources announced today that it has uncovered a new, previously undiscovered Tom Cruise rumor: Tom Cruise and Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas are lovers!

Independent Sources has hesitated writing about Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes for many reasons. First, there are other things going on in the world that, believe it or not, rank higher on the importance scale. Second, pretty much everything that can be said is being said.

However, someone (I'll call her Mistress of the Hollywood Rumor) Just walked into Insider's office with the following dish that I feel compelled to pass on. I did a quick check of Technorati and it wasn't there. So even if it is not true, it is at least original.

No doubt that anyone with an Internet connection has read about Tom Cruise being gay. According to rumor lore, he has had a long-time boyfriend in Chicago who is an Asian pilot for American Airlines. This is an accusation that Cruise and more importantly Cruise's many attorneys vehemently deny.

There have been many stories that supposedly corroborate his sexuality but never a smoking gun. Rumor mongers attribute this to the fact that Cruise goes to great lengths to cover his tracks. We are told that everyone around him signs extensive confidentiality contracts with enormous penalties for indiscretion. (Exhibit A: the 8-page confidentiality contract Cruise's housekeeper was forced to sign).

Such stories have been around for years and Cruise has evidently attempted to counter them with a series of high-profile heteronormative relationships. First, Nicole Kidman, then Penelope Cruz, and most recently Katie Holmes. In each instance, the "relationship" is actually a contract that gives the women a boost to their careers, a lot of money, and an elegant lifestyle.

Here is where this particular rumor gets interesting. Not long ago, Marisol, the wife of Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas (who has had to contend with his own rumors of bi-sexuality) found her husband in bed with Tom Cruise causing Cruise's people to shift into high gear.

First, Mrs. Rob Thomas was bought off for an undetermined sum. Second, Cruise and his handlers set out to immediately find Cruise a girlfriend. Second-tier actresses were targeted. A list was drawn up with Jessica Alba (#1 pick) and three other girls who fell out for various reasons. Originally targeted (#3 I think) but later rejected as "undesirable" was rumor queen Lindsay Lohan. Way down at #5 on the list was Katie Holmes, but that was the one with whom they were able to strike a deal.

Once the contact was signed, photo ops were set up, leaks were made to the right places, and we've had celebrity relationship on steroids ever since.

One thing I will credit this rumor for is how it nicely explains Tom's behavior this past few months-including the couch jumping episode on Oprah. Cruise simply didn't have time for the Holmes rumors to circulate at its normal speed and he couldn't allow it to be second page news while the tabloids focused on Brad, Jennifer and Angelina. No, this relationship had to immediately become the "it" topic.

Well, that's how we hear it.

[A reminder to those of you reading this who have trouble differentiating truth from unsubstantiated rumor: at this point this is all conjecture. All we are doing is confirming the existence of a rumor that the Mistress tells us is all over Hollywood.] We should also add that this story is a bit of a departure for us. If you are interested in keeping up to date on it and other celebrity gossip, we suggest Defamer.

The Dandy Warhols

Dandy Warhols' Latest

(New York, NY) - The Dandy Warhols will release their fifth album, Odditorium or Warlords of Mars, on September 13, 2005.

Named (at least partially) after the band's infamous Portland studio headquarters, Odditorium or Warlords of Mars finds the band venturing beyond the synthesized pop of 2003's Welcome to the Monkey House into new musical terrain, while frequently revisiting the stripped-down sound of their earlier years.

The album was produced by frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor with longtime band collaborator Gregg Williams and mixed by Tchad Blake (Elvis Costello, Latin Playboys, the Bad Plus) and Taylor-Taylor.

Opening with a tongue-in-cheek introduction from A&E host Bill Kurtis, the album is full of the band's trademark mix of rock hooks and sonic experimentalism, spanning turned-on drone rock, country blues, electronic pop and deep psychedelia.

Lead single "Smoke It’s” video features the band performing the song in the Odditorium for 40 visibly impressed dogs.

The Dandy Warhols only live performance of the summer will be at Lollapalooza, to be held in Chicago's Grant Park on July 23 and 24, 2005. A North American fall tour will be announced shortly, along with an acoustic "Suitcase Tour" in which the band will play using everything they can fit into a single suitcase (besides acoustic guitars).

The Dandy Warhols can be also be seen as co-stars of Ondi Timoner's documentary film Dig!, winner of the Grand Jury Prize Documentary at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. The film, narrated by Taylor-Taylor, chronicles the uniquely dysfunctional relationship between the Dandies and their unpredictable friends the Brian Jonestown Massacre.

Paula Abdul (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli)

FROM AP:

Paula Abdul, right, urges lawmakers to approve a measure that would require stronger cleanliness standards for nail salons, during a committee hearing at the Capitol in Sacramento, Calif., Monday, June 27, 2005. Abdul told members of the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Develoment Committee, how she had gotten an infection while getting a manicure from a Studio City nail salon in 2004. If passed by the Legislature, the measure by Assemblyman Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, left, wouldstrengthen cleanliness standards and require nail salons to post conspicous notices when disciplinary action is taken against them.

Abdul: More Regulations for Nail Salons

"American Idol" judge Paula Abdul urged California legislators to force nail salons to clean up their act, testifying Monday about her yearlong health ordeal after an unsanitary manicure.

Abdul said a trip in April 2004 to a Studio City nail shop that used unclean equipment sent her in and out of the hospital, and made her the butt of late-night talk show jokes.

"Being a professional dancer, I'm no stranger to pain, but this time the pain was so excruciating that even my hair touching my thumb caused me to scream," Abdul told the California Senate Business and Professions Committee in Sacramento.

The legislation, sponsored by Democratic Assemblyman Leland Yee, would establish safety standards for manicure and pedicure equipment and rewrite state regulations mandating that nail shops follow sanitary practices.

Customers are vulnerable to bacterial infections if manicurists do not properly sanitize their tools between jobs.

The bill was expected to pass in committee. If that occurs, it would likely come before the full Senate sometime in the next two weeks.

"I was publicly humiliated," Abdul said in her closing statement. "That is why with an open heart and a selfless agenda, I implore you to pass this bill."

Ahh...Massage

Massage Must in West L.A.

[BeansTalk can personally recommend Ms. Stein as an excellent massage therapist.]

From BeansTalk friend, Betzi Stein: Scientific studies have shown that receiving massage therapy on a regular basis contributes to long term health, well being and quality of life. I believe that massage therapy should be affordable for everyone, so I am introducing a pricing policy that will allow anyone to experience the benefits of my high level of skill and sensitivity acquired over more than 18 years in private practice. I call it HONOR SYSTEM PRICING and here’s how it works: YOU SET YOUR OWN FEE!* That’s right. You tell me how much you are comfortable paying within a certain range, and that is what I will accept.

My standard rates are:

$55 per 1/2 hour

$100 per 1 hour

$145 per 1 1/2 hour

Honor System Price Range:

1/2 hour $25 - $55

1 hour $55 - $100

1 1/2 hour $100 - $145

It is my wish that you make massage a priority in your life and if given the opportunity to choose a price that fits your budget, money will not be a deterrent.

I specialize in pain management for people who have chronic musculoskeletal problems, but the work is effective for anyone

including people recovering from injury or illness, athletes, pregnant women, the elderly and anyone who is just overstressed and overworked.

What makes my work unique is the very slow, deliberate, deep tissue method I use that allows the body to open and release pain and tension comfortably. It is deeply satisfying and relaxing to receive.

I see both male and female clients of all ages, am available seven days, have flexible hours and am centrally located on the Westside of Los Angeles.

Pamela Anderson

Pam Anderson's Rejection

NEW YORK Thursday, June 23, 2005 – The man who claims to be the first to discover Pamela Anderson speaks out about her first modeling gig on Friday’s ‘A Current Affair.” He claims that when he sent the resulting photos to Pepsi and Canada’s Labatt’s Beer they rejected her.

“I think I saw how special she was [during that first photo shoot], but when I was showing her pictures around LA [before she became famous], I don't think people [advertisers] could see it [her star qualities], just yet,” says TV producer, David Sereda, who claims he was the first to discover her star potential. He first noticed the star when she was featured in a “little black and white ad” for a fitness club in Canada, asserting the ad “was so small you almost needed a magnifying glass to see how beautiful she was.” Anderson was a fitness trainer for the club.

Sereda says he was looking to hire a model to represent a new clothing line called Hot Skins Body Wear. This quickly became what he claims to be Anderson’s first modeling gig, but he also states she was “big, robust…like a strong European woman.” He claims she had originally set her sights on training to be a female body builder, and takes credit for steering her in a different direction. Her first challenge, he states, was for her to lose “all the muscle,” so she could pursue an acting career.

The photographs from that shoot, he asserts, were “really silly,” stating that the budget was so low that he himself shot the photographs. “We used light bulbs because we couldn't afford good studio lights and we used newspaper for a backdrop…”

More on Anderson’s early beginnings, including the childhood incident that shocked the star so much she turned into a P.E.T.A. ambassador, on Friday’s ‘A Current Affair,” (www.acurrentaffair.com), disributed throughout the United States by Twentieth Television.
