Get Your Guess On

Stars who were taking a break from rehearsing from the super tough work of preparing for the Teen Choice Awards last week were able to visit the Tiger Electronics Celebrity Retreat where BeansTalk found the Guess by Marciano footwear booth hopping. Stars such as Avril Levigne, Jessica Alba, Jordin Sparks, Nikki Blonski, Megan Fox, Omarion, Snoop Dogg,The Jonas Brothers, and all the cute kids from High School Musical 2 were raving about the sexy styles. Here’s the scoop: Stiletto Mary Janes and the signature Guess leopard print pumps were flying off the shelves.

The stars who presented or performed at last week’s Teen Choice Awards were spending some down time playing with the new High School Musical version of the classic toy. Their questions? Mark Indelicato of Ugly Betty fame asked if “Ugly Betty” was the best show ever. The answer: “Signs say soarin’!” As he shook the Magic 8 Ball, “High School Musical” cutie pie star Lucas Grabeel asked “Am I going to win an award tonight?” The answer was: “All signs point to yes!”

Hallmark Cutie

Backstage at the Teen Choice Awards last weekend, young stars had the chance to reach out to young fans who may be watching the show from a hospital room. Hallmark paired up with Tamagotchi Toys to send gift bags to sick kids through the City of Hope. Kudos to stars like Miley Cyrus, Megan Fox, and Omarion who penned heartfelt sentiments to these young fans on Hallmark cards.

BeansTalk has learned that Hallmark’s super popular sound effect cards were gifted to Teen Choice Award presenters and performers. Check out the adorable Miley Cyrus! She shared that her mom recently received the Hannah Montana sound effect card for her birthday. Great choice.

LA Music fans and do-gooders were in for a treat Tuesday night. Those in the know checked out three hot bands at Spaceland in Silver Lake. Everest, King Straggler, and The Watson Twins performed in front of a packed house. In addition to hearing great music, Circle X theater company was hosting a benefit towards their goal of raising $100,000 this summer. We’ll publish final figures on their take as soon as we get em’!
Our sources tell us it was a lot of fun because King Straggler is about to release their second album soon.

King Straggler is Rodney Eastman, Brentley Gore, Danny Thompson, and John Hawkes. Eastman and Hawkes met playing brothers on an independent film. Eastman and Gore had begun to write songs together. In the spring of 2003, in Los Angeles, they formed King Straggler. From the outset the group has derived their unique sound by taking equal share in singing and songwriting duties, becoming three frontman with contrasting styles that dovetail into rich musical textures and colorful vocal blends. Stars Relax in Style at Teen Choice Awards

Backstage Creations, specialists in award show gifts and custom backstage celebrity retreats, hosted the Tiger Electronics Celebrity Retreat at the Teen Choice Awards last weekend. BeansTalk dropped in to check it out. We particularly enjoyed the eco-friendly décor by Path Design, the super hip gift selections, the relaxing atmosphere, and of course: the hospitality of our host. Teen queen Hilary Duff and actor/comedian Nick Cannon teamed up to host the ninth annual edition of Teen Choice, which celebrates the hottest teen icons in film, television, music, sports and fashion. Celebrities including Jessica Alba, Avril Lavigne, Emmy Rossum, Miley Cyrus, Nick Cannon with fiancé Selita Banks, the cast of High School Musical (Vanessa Hudgens, Lucas Gabreel, Monique Coleman, Chris Warren Jr., Olesya Rulin, Ryne Sanborn), Chingy, Jordin Sparks, Jared Padalecki, Sophia Bush, Megan Fox, Sum 41, Taylor Kitsch, Bow Wow, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Snoop Dogg, Nikki Blonsky, and Adrianne Palicki were thanked for their time and talent by being given the opportunity to select specific gifts they wish to receive from the sumptuous product lines being offered by participating donor companies. Host Hilary Duff was unable to visit the retreat but enjoyed the items delivered to her in her dressing room.

Crocs Rule on Animal Planet
Network Heralds Conservationist Steve Irwin with Week Long Celebration

The legendary Croc Hunter, Steve Irwin, with his signature khaki shorts, have been synonymous with Animal Planet for nearly as long as the network has been in existence. Emmy nominee (The Starter Wife) Debra Messing was taking a break from her award show preparations to fit in a little retail therapy last Thursday in New York. A BeansTalk spy caught sight of the TV sweetheart as she was checking out the Billion Dollar Babes Sale at the Altman Building on 18th Street in Manhattan. Our source tells us that she has returned to the super thin silhouette of her pre-pregnancy days. She was sporting very casual clothes, a simple ponytail, and no make up – and looked gorgeous. Son Roman was very well behaved and not whiny at all. She seemed at ease, and was friendly to everyone there. Her purchases? An armful of Chloe bags at 75% off! Twins & Sextuplets: Jon & Kate Plus 8

BeansTalk Note: We think this is insanity. But we have only one child and are very pleased with that number. We also didn’t realize this was even a series, let alone welcoming a second season. At any rate, we received the DVD in the mail and today we got this release in e-mail.

We would characterize this as insanity, but vaguely fascinating. Oh so much a better you than me scenario.

Jon and Kate Gosselin—along with their small army of 6-year-old twins and 3-year-old sextuplets—are back for more naps, snacks and timeouts as JON AND KATE PLUS 8 returns for its second season on Tuesday, October 2, at 10 PM (ET/PT) on Discovery Health. The now-famous story of a couple with twins who tried for " just one more" only to end up with sextuplets, JON AND KATE PLUS 8 immediately proved to be a huge hit with viewers thanks to its sweet—but very real—look at what it takes to raise an unconventional family with conventional means.

Red-Carpet Ready!

Even if you’re not going to be walking the red carpet for the Emmys, being picture perfect for an important event is crucial for most of us. Luckily, Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Stuart Kaplan has some valuable tips (

1. Botox on palms and underarms will prevent sweaty handshakes and sweat stains on clothing.

2. Micro-laser peel – better, faster, and less painful than a chemical peel, the micro-laser peel precisely and evenly removes the top layers of the skin, revealing new skin that is smooth and has even skin tone. Removes any light freckles and lessens fine lines and wrinkles. Gives a natural glow to the face. Should be done at least 2 weeks before the big day.

3. Botox to forehead, frown lines, crow's feet to minimize the appearance of wrinkles (and preventing you from deepening the ones you have). Can also be injected to the top corners of the eyebrow to give upper eyelids a slight lift. Even to the neck, to lessen heavy lines. Also, Botox can be injected into the jawline, for people who have very muscular/angular jawlines and favor a more oval shaped face. Botox can also be injected in the calves, for people who feel they have overly muscular or uneven calves.

4. Injectable fillers, such as Radiesse (made of calcium and lasts 8 months to a year), Juvederm and Restylane (hyaluronic acid fillers which last up to 3-6 months) can be used to:

a) Fix any asymmetry of the lips. Can also be used to give a fuller pout.

b) Soften nasolabial folds (the lines that run from the corner of your nose to your mouth)

c) "non-surgical nose job" for people who have a slight bump in their nose bridge, a filler can fill in the valley between the forehead and this bump. This enhances a person's profile with absolutely zero down time.

d) enhance cheekbones

e) plump really deep furrows and lines in the forehead, which no amount of Botox can erase

f) for deep acne scars or "pits" in the skin, fillers can be used to plump these crevices so they are virtually invisible

g) inject into the balls of the feet, to help 'pad' the feet when wearing high heels

5. Laser

a) remove red blood vessels along the corners of the nose (instant results, and zero down time)

b) remove spider veins that may appear on the back of legs, thighs, and upper arms

c) for people who plan a month in advance, consider a deep laser resurfacing, which is much, much deeper than a micro-laser peel but does an amazing job of basically removing a thick layer of skin to virtually erase excess, wrinkly skin under the eyes, all age spots, freckles, fine lines, etc. Your skin will be scabbed and red for at least 2 weeks, and then red and raw for about 2 more weeks after that (which can be covered up with make-up if necessary), so unless you have a month downtime to spare, this procedure is not recommended.

d) Lasers to tighten skin, minimize pore size, and remove any skin redness

Save Us From Fug Fashion

Apparently, to look at some dress lines out there -- in a range of price points -- ugly is the new pretty.

There was a time in the early to mid-80s when fashion for the more mature (translated to those who weren't dressing like Madonna from Vision Quest) looked a good deal like the images below.

We noticed last week during one of our bi-monthly Target trips, that Isaac Mizrahi's line was looking particularly unwearable. From fabric selection to styling, it was just all wrong. Two examples follow. We then spent a couple of hours at Loehmann's and were dismayed to discover that Free People, a line we really liked, seemed to be jumping on the fug fashion bandwagon.

What is happening that lines that we once really liked are offering up fall wares that are just plain trendy-ugly. Yuck.

Ugly for us is unflattering and distinctive only in it's awfulness. See images below for confirmation.

When you have to say, believe it or not, these dresses look even worse in person -- you know that Target's Haute Couture designer Isaac Mizrahi has oh, so, jumped the shark. Utterly hideous.

Ellen Degeneres Gets Big

Emmy®-winning talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres is bringing her winning personality to TBS this November, when she presents ELLEN’S REALLY BIG SHOW, according to an announcement made today by Michael Wright, senior vice president in charge of the Content Creation Group for TBS, TNT and TCM. The two-hour variety special will feature performances by top talents from the worlds of comedy and music. It will be shot at HBO and AEG Live’s The Comedy Festival (TCF) at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, for which TBS serves as title sponsor. It will then premiere on TBS Sunday, Nov. 18.

“We are truly thrilled to be working with the enormously talented Ellen DeGeneres on her first TBS special,” said Wright. “It’s especially exciting to see her bring back the variety special format, which for decades provided television with some of its most memorable performances.”

BeansTalk Note: We tried to watch this, but our copy had horrible sound and huge chunks that would simply go silent. But, we can say from what we saw that Jennifer Morrison is very good – we never realized what a good actress she is.

The film’s premise is based on a novel by Noel Botham. Morrison plays the central figure, a reporter who convinces her British editor to send her to Paris to report on what Princess Diana was up to with Dodi Fayed at the Ritz. She not only manages to stay at the Ritz, she apparently used to date (and here’s where we’re not 100% certain, since this is where the sound blew out) the French head of police or head of security or something – but he’s official. She’s friends with one of the motorcycle riding paps, so not only does she get the inside scoop from the handsome French guy but she actually gets on the pap’s motorcycle and witnesses the accident. At this point, we had to stop watching because we were missing too much dialogue.

We were reluctant to even watch this because as a royalty book and memorabilia collector, we’re not so keen on the “speculative” – or what is sometimes called “entertainments” (as in Jane Austen sequel books). But from what we could tell, it seemed to be a well-constructed film. What seemed most distractingly improbable is how Morrison’s character manages to be right there, in several locations.

Here’s what Lifetime is releasing about the telefilm:

Lifetime Television is marking the anniversary of that tragic evening of August 31, 1997, with three nights of special programming featuring a seminal moment in television journalism and a Lifetime Original Movie Event, beginning with the candid and explosive 1995 BBC landmark interview conducted by award-winning journalist Martin Bashir, airing Saturday, August 25, 2007 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), Sunday, August 26 at 5 p.m. (ET/PT) and Monday, August 27 at 11 p.m. (ET/PT).

During the now historic hour-long discussion – which was her first-ever one-on-one sit down with the media about her personal life -- Princess Di shared some of her most intimate secrets, which ultimately confirmed years of rumors and speculation, and sent shock waves throughout the British monarchy, Great Britain and beyond its shores.

Following the poignant conversation will be the Lifetime Original Movie “The Murder of Princess Diana,” which airs August 25 at 9PM (ET/PT) and August 26 at 6PM (ET/PT) as well as Monday, August 27 at 9PM (ET/PT). Starring Jennifer Morrison (“House”), the movie is a fictionalized account of the book by the same name by Noel Botham, which theorized that the car crash that claimed the lives of the Princess of Wales, her companion Dodi Fayed and their chauffeur Henri Paul, was a conspiracy.

In the revolutionary BBC interview, the “People’s Princess” opened up to Bashir about her personal and private life. She shed light on the breakdown of her marriage to Prince Charles and how the intense media scrutiny made her personal life almost unbearable. Additionally, she discussed her depression and eating disorder, her love affair with her riding trainer James Hewitt, as well as the difficulties of raising her children in a royal fishbowl.

During the interview, Princess Diana said:

· About self-destructive behavior: “Yes, I did inflict upon myself. I didn't like myself. I was ashamed because I couldn't cope with the pressures.”

· About her turbulent marriage: “My husband and I had to keep everything together because we didn't want to disappoint the public, and yet obviously there was a lot of anxiety going on within our four walls.”

· About being the Queen of England: “I'd like to be a queen of people's hearts, but I don't see myself being Queen of this country. I don't think many people will want me to be Queen. Actually, when I say many people I mean the establishment that I married into, because they’ve decided that I'm a non-starter.” features two clips from the interview. In the first, the late Princess of Wales discusses how she found peace coming to the aid of those rejected by society, and in the second clip, Diana reflects on what she expected entering into marriage with Prince Charles and how the media attention weighed on her through the years. Martin Bashir was named co-anchor of ABC News’ “Nightline” in October 2005 and is based in New York. The internationally acclaimed, award-winning journalist joined ABC’s newsmagazine “20/20” in September 2004, and continues to report for the program. Mr. Bashir is best known for making landmark documentaries, including “Living with Michael Jackson,” and is also known for his investigative reporting for ITV, British television’s most popular network.
