Freckles are Fancy For Sun Damage: Dr. Simon Ourian of Eipone Medical Center in Beverly Hills has developed Blue Light Therapy, an FDA approved, non-invasive and effective procedure for treating hyper pigmentation, sunspots, broken capillaries and rosacea. The procedure stars with a photosensitive gel applied to the skin. Using a special light, different than a laser treatment, a series of intense light is emitted over the entire face. The light heats up and creates micro pores in the capillaries, causing them to shrink. Any colored material on the surface of the skin, including sunspots and damage, are either absorbed into the skin or evaporated. No recovery, back to work the same day. He recommends three to six sessions, in three to four week intervals. Each session costs between $500 to $1000. More info, visit www.epione.com, or call 800-828-6466.

Soul SirkUS : Soul SirkUS’ website (www.soulsirkus.com) received over 100,000 hits in only two days.

Soul SirkUS is a group of rockers born out of the ashes of Planet US, a band originally featuring guitarist Neal Schon and drummer Deen Castronovo of Journey along with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony of Van Halen. When Hagar and Anthony left the band to return to their roles in Van Halen, Schon and Castronovo joined forces with singer Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen, Talisman; also provided lead vocals for the feature character in the movie “Rock Star”) and bassist Marco Mendoza (Ted Nugent, Whitesnake) to create Soul SirkUS.

The band’s debut album should be released by early 2005. It was recorded at Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain’s home studio (Wild Horse Studios) in San Francisco, CA in two days. Cain engineered the project and Schon and Soto sat at the producer’s helm.
The website features six 60-90 second sound clips to preview the album.

Schon and Soto met and played together at the Winter NAMM Convention in Los Angeles. Schon then saw Mendoza performing at a showcase that weekend, which sparked an idea to create the band. Once Castronovo and Mendoza were on board, Schon and Soto quickly got to work, collaborating on a number of songs, the results of which will be heard on their debut album.

”Terminal”ly Cute: Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have collaborated on a film about Viktor Navorski, a visitor from an eastern European country. While Navorski’s flight is in the air on its way to JFK, the country experiences a coup. Navorski’s passport and visa are null, and he’s forced to stay in the airport’s international terminal by the by-the-book head of security, Frank Dixon (Stanley Tucci). During his stay, he meets a diverse group of airline workers each who are won over by Navorski’s kindness and tenacity. The group includes easy-going African-American Mulroy (Chi McBride); Latino Enrique Cruz (Diego Luna), a love struck food services worker, and Indian Gupta (Wes Anderson favorite Kumar Pallana). Navorski also falls in love with a love-starved flight attendant (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who’s having an affair with a married man she connects with at the terminal. Even The Dan Band’s Dan Finnerty (see entry below) has a funny cameo as the terminal’s The Discovery Store manager.

The film’s set is impressive, as is Hanks’ performance, capturing the character’s sweet innocence. There’s a lot to like about the film, but there’s also something lacking in the film. Despite the length (2 hrs. plus), the film barely skims the surface of the characters. You get a general sense of Tucci’s, Zeta-Jones’, Luna’s, etc. personalities, but it’s so superficial you can’t help but be left wanting. The most developed character, Navorski, short of being a truly good person, charming and a talented building artisan, isn’t even fully developed. Spielberg seems preoccupied with the sweetness of the character, depicting his physical situation of being trapped in The Terminal, but doesn’t quite delve deep enough for an audience to feel the necessary emotional attachment, even to Navorski.

Who Was Where: Lucky Magazine and Hollywould Shoes celebrated the launch of Hollywould Shoes' first retail store in Los Angeles at Star Shoes on Hollywood Blvd. In attendance were Nicky Hilton, Bijou Phillips, Casey Johnson, Rachel Bilson and Adam Brody (who were by each other's side all night), Aisha Tyler and Jessica Capshaw.

Paris and Nicky Hilton were seen at Avalon Hollywood on Friday night, with their parents, Kathy and Rick Hilton, celebrating their uncle's birthday. They were seated next to hot couple Wilmer Valderrama and Lindsay Lohan.

British super-star soccer player Vinnie Jones and his best "mate" Jason Statham of “Transporter” and “The Italian Job” were out at Spider Club. He’s as much the ladies man as you’d expect (those moves! That accent!) – he was consistently surrounded by a group of women and left the club with Jones and a group of blondes in a blacked-out SUV.

Also at the Spider club was Nick Lachey, watching the dance floor from the sidelines with his brother Drew and friends, while wife Jessica Simpson is on tour. Hey, you didn’t expect him to stay at home and pine for her, did you?

Pagliei’s New Line: We were lucky enough to get to the Patti Pagliei’s warehouse sale in Marina del Rey, Calif. this weekend. Some of their hottest lines were available at a great prices. But even at regular rates, this is a really amazing jewelry line – it’s very reasonably priced, gorgeous, and super popular with celebs. It’s also – and this is critical – very unique and wearable with a variety of clothing styles. There’s a huge list of celebs who’ve already worn the line. A current favorite is the surprisingly substantial, but delicate appearing sterling "Botanical Collection” which was worn by Ashley Olsen on an E! Entertainment special on both Ashley and Mary Kate Olsen. Ashley chose the dangly Lotus Earrings which complemented her pixie face. Pretty Christina Applegate, who’ll star in the upcoming “Anchor Man” wears the Lotus necklace on a full-page photo in the July issue (page 174) of In Style magazine. Jessica Simpson (You know she knows fashion) has the Lily Cuff. To check out these and other fantastic styles, check out

Flat Irons If you don't want to go the thermal straightening route (we've done it and loved it), you might want to consider the flat-iron options, as delineated by Sally Beauty. For coarse, resistant hair, they recommend the Ceramic Tools Porcelain Flat Iron. For Curly or Wavy Hair, they say try the Ion Anti-Freeze Ceramic Iron, and for Fine Thin Hair, try the Ceramic Tools Porcelain Curved Iron. Stylist Ernie McCraw recommends using a product like Ion Anti-Frizz Heat Protection on dry, clean hair, then dividing the hair into sections top, left and right. Next, work from front to back taking small sections and moving the iron in one fluid motion from roots to ends. Don't let iron sit in one palce too long, since heat can be damaging. Then, comb out hair and spray on a balm or glosser like Ion Anti-Frizz Glossing Mist to keep hair straight and shinier longer. Check out www.sallybeauty.com for more info.

Brow Beaten: Anastasia Soare, whose name is synonymous with Hollywood eyebrows, has introduced new brow powders. The dubbed "Browcologist" has launched the new line, which comes in Blonde, Ash Blonde, Light Brown and Brunette and retail for $20. Ginkgo Biloba is used as a free radical scavenger and Dog Rose extract is used for emollient consistency. Soare has done the beautiful brows of Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Sharon Stone, Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Garner, Debra Messing, to name a few.

Bling: Simon G has added tri-gold pieces to his line, in which he intertwines rose, yellow and white gold. They come in rings, earrings, neckpieces and bracelets, using 18-karat gold with precious metals and natural-colored diamonds. More info? Call 213-622-2660 or visit www.simonjewelry.com.

Vote for Change!: Los Angeles-based apparel company Clothing of the American Mind, in association with co-chairs Kirsty Hume, Amber Valetta and Donovan Leitch, presented Fashion 4 Change, a fundraising evening of Democratic-oriented fashion and music on Friday, June 25, 2004 at the Spider Club. Fashion 4 Change benefitted Clothing of the American Mind¹s commitment to increasing voter registration across America. The event featured a fashion show, silent auction and DJ John Blista.

Clothing of the American Mind showcased its line of topical T-shirts -- designs are politically-themed, featuring slogans lambasting the Bush Administration¹s wrongdoings. Catch phrases like ³Axis of Evil Doers,² ³Environmental Destroyers,² ³Halliburton Overchargers² and ³No Child Left Behinders² are printed on sports team-like American Apparel jersey T-shirts. There is also a full line of tees, tank tops, underwear and shorts encouraging all to ³VOTE² come November.

100% of the net proceeds from this star-studded event benefit Clothing of the American Mind, whose nationwide campaign to increase voter awareness and registration will culminate in a cross-country road trip throughout the month of July. Voter registration rallies will be held along the way, leading up to and finishing at the Democratic National Convention from July 26 29, 2004 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Clothing of the American Mind was founded in mid-2004 in response to the vast unyielding money-making machine of the current administration and the alternative idea vacuum that has become the order of the day. The company has found the ideal way to simultaneously make a statement while starting a dialogue of the real issues. All net proceeds go to reputable organizations committed to the advancement of progressive political causes and for tossing George W. Bush and his posse out of the White House. For more information or to purchase T-shirts, visit www.clothingoftheamericanmind.com.

California’s Gov: Animal Terminator: SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, in the doghouse with animal-welfare advocates for proposing that shelters be allowed to kill stray animals more quickly to save money, said Friday that his budget recommendation was a mistake.
As part of his budget proposal first drafted in December, the governor had asked the Legislature to repeal a 1998 law that requires the shelters to hold dogs and cats up to six days before destroying them. The governor wanted to save local goverments that operate the shelters $14 million by cutting the waiting period in half.

But after a nationwide storm of protest, the governor organized a press conference outside his Capitol office and confessed to his error.

"I realized last night that there was a mistake that I made on the budget," he explained, noting he had only a few weeks to put his proposed budget together between his inauguration in November and when the document went to the printers in December.
Statewide, an estimated 600,000 dogs and cats are put to death each year -- 34,000 in Los Angeles alone. In addition to cats and dogs, the shelters also care for many other animals including birds, hamsters, potbellied pigs, rabbits, snakes and turtles.
H.D. Palmer, a spokesman for the state Department of Finance, had said the six-day waiting period caused overcrowding and forced some shelters to kill off animals.

Political observers noted the issue was potentially volatile.
"Cats and dogs are like mom and apple pie," said Barbara O'Connor, director of the Institute for the Study of Politics and Media at California State University, Sacramento.
"Don't mess with the pets. Most people prefer them to other people," she said.

The Legislature is working to pass the state's budget before the next fiscal year begins July 1.

The Mummy Ride at Universal Studios: Last night, the entire staff of BeansTalk attended Universal Studios private party for the premiere of the much-anticipated Revenge of the Mummy ride.

The Jurassic Park ride was also open. It was a treat to not wait in any line, have an entire car to ourselves, but not so much the getting wet. Getting absolutely soaked. We took our wet selves over to the line for the Mummy ride – significant because the even more privileged got to go straight to the front. It took more than an hour. The ride is fairly raucous (not for the faint of heart).

There were a bunch of celebrities – most of whom (despite being on the periphery of entertainment) we didn’t recognize. We got to meet Jon Favreau, who we actually had just done an hour-long phone interview earlier that day! Stars Brendan Fraser and Arnold Vosloo were there, along with one-hit wonder Geraldo, Miguel Ferrer, Davleigh Chase, Thora Birch and Wayne Brady.

Bear in mind that starting today, the lines for Revenge of the Mummy will be long – and the ride (per a BeansTalker) seems to last about 45 seconds.

If Ben Affleck Can Win $365K…: GSN, the network for games, gets ready for “Celebrity Blackjack” its premiere episode of “Celebrity Blackjack,” with Snoop Dogg, Shannon Elizabeth, Jason Alexander, Camryn Manheim and Kevin Nealon. The six-episode series hosted by Matt Vasgersian (lead TV broadcaster for the San Diego Padres) and Alex Borstein ("Mad TV," "Cat Woman"), and featuring 25 celebrities playing for their favorite charities debuts on Monday, July 5, 2004 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/PT). The winner earns an impressive $100,000 donation. Then on July 12, 2004, Richard Belzer, Chynna Phillips, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Andy Dick and Mark Steines take their turn at the table.

Miming Martha (Stewart, that is): With Martha Stewart’s fate in the balance, ABC is jumping on the opportunity with the new series “The Great Domestic Showdown.” Steve Kemble is on the contestants on the series, which airs Sunday, July 11, 2004. Kemble’s appeared on “Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?” on the Style Network, to a role on ABC Family Channel’s “My Life is a Sitcom.”

Adam Carolla, TV and radio personality (“The Man Show” and “Loveline” – and graduate of North Hollywood High School, class of 1982) hosts. Kemble and five other contestants prove their diva-ness in six categories: decorating, cooking, gardening, entertaining, home improvement and the final challenge – a splendid gala event. Judges are Sandra Lee, host of the Food Network’s “Semi-Homemade;” Robert Verdi, host of the Discovery Channel’s “Surprise by Design;” and Govind Armstrong, one of LA’s top chefs at the elite Table 8. Contestants are judged on originality, creativity, resourcefulness and the ability to stay within the rules. The winner gets a deal with Hyperion Books, an appearance on “Good Morning America” and his or her own television show.

Kemble says, “this show is a dream come true for me. On any given day, I’m used to working with ice sculptures the size of a ballroom and enough roses and flowers to create a botanical garden – then, I’ll go home and host a 50 person cocktail party. I’m truly a domestic diva!”

Contestants lived together in one mansion, shared a solitary bathroom and were monitored by audio and cameras 24-hours a day. No communication with the outside world were allowed. They also had only five “survival” items they were allowed to bring as resources to prove their domestic skills.

Who’s Wearing What: Ashley Judd signed as Face of Estee Lauder's "American Beauty" and she showed up at Wednesday’s NYC Carlyle Hotel event in a Marc Jacobs dress, Chanel earrings and Manolo Blahnik shoes.

Julie Delpy, at the 2004 Los Angeles Film Festival - "Before Sunset" Premiere showed up in a gorgeous deep green silk satin dress, looking not a day older than she did at the “Before Sunrise” premiere years ago.

God knows what Winona Ryder was wearing at that event. The actual outfit – destined to make the “What Was She Thinking” columns – wasn’t bad, but on petite Ryder it overwhelmed her. The vintage clothing fan wore a 70s styled silk chiffon pastel and amber print pleated dress, with an empire waist, and halter top. She added a red silk print kimono coat and carried, curiously, a tan leather everyday handbag.

Our friends Karen Brailsford , pretty in a Sue Wong print dress, and Alice Chung were at the Levi's 501-Caroline Calvin Reception at Pearl (we couldn't go since we were at the Universal Event even those we LOVE the hosts, the guys at Rousso/Fisher, Ryan and RJ).

Safe Tan : St. Tropez Tanning Essentials instant self-tanner is a favorite of Victoria Beckham , Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Ripa, Mia Tyler, Cate Blanchette, action super star Rick Yune, EXTRA¹s Samantha Harris, Fox 11 News/ Entertainment Reporter Lisa Breckenridge, producer Joe Reitman, and even the British Royal Family, who get tanned at the palace! New is the Self-Tan Remover: A fast and easy way to remove any unsightly stains from your palms after using any self-tanner. His Parents Sang “Mockingbird” : Ben Taylor makes his acting debut guest-starring in a multi-story arc as Cal, a struggling singer-songwriter in the mid-1960s who will also be performing in the Lair -- and provides a new romantic interest for Beth Mason (Rachel Boston) -- in the third season of NBC's "American Dreams" (Sundays, 8-9 p.m. ET).

“I am really looking forward to being on American Dreams,” says Taylor, whose parents are Carly Simon and James Taylor. “It will be a good way for me to get my feet wet in acting as the character I am playing is very much like myself. In the meantime, I am trying to finish my band’s new album and really trying not to think about the fact that I have never acted.”

Taylor is currently in an Atlanta studio recording the Ben Taylor Band's follow-up album to their 2003 debut, Famous Among the Barns. Recording with producer Rick Beato (Ingram Hill, Flickerstick, The Rising), the band's new album titled Another Run Around the Sun, is expected to be released this fall to coincide with the season premiere of NBC's "American Dreams," which will also feature original music from this album.

"It's our show's good luck to have Ben Taylor playing the Beatles' 'In My Life' last season," said "American Dreams" executive producer Jonathan Prince. "There will be romantic tension between Ben's character and Beth, played by Rachel Boston. How could there not be? A good-looking guy with a guitar who sings like an angel."

The Ben Taylor Band's debut album, Famous Among the Barns, has sold over 50,000 copies since release through Taylor's self-owned label, Iris Records (Ryko/MRI). The band spent much of 2003 on the road promoting the album and touring with artists as Dar Williams, Blues Traveler, Spearhead, and Ziggy Marley. The group also appeared on NBC "Tonight Show with Jay Leno," CBS "The Early Show," NBC "Last Call with Carson Daly," and FOX "Summer Music Mania," and also won a Boston Music Award.

The Ben Taylor Band's music has been described as a mixture of rock, pop, folk with touch of hip-hop infused lyrics.
"American Dreams," has won two Emmy Awards and is set against the music of the 1960s. It’s life as seen through the Pryor family of Philadelphia. "American Dreams" is from NBC Universal Television Studios. Dick Clark and Jonathan Prince are executive producers. For further information on the ben taylor band visit: www.bentaylorband.com

Generally recognized as “the greatest bar band in the world”, NRBQ got their start in 1968 when they signed with Columbia Records. The future looked promising for the band, but soon third-stringers started getting similar contracts with big record companies.

Although NRBQ’s records didn’t shoot up the charts, they and their fans were more than satisfied with the results. Coming off a few regional hits and rabid east coast fandom, things began to fall into place for the band. Musicians like Dave Edmunds and Elvis Costello showed interest and NRBQ was finally in the limelight.

The release of “One In A Million” is a representative slice of NRBQ in their prime. Shot in 1989 and featuring the classic quartet of Terry Adams on keyboards, Joey Spampinato on Bass, “Big Al” Anderson on guitar, and Tom Ardolino on drums, it demonstrates the frightening ease with which one of America’s best bands can perfectly play prime material that is fun, showing their fans what rock ‘n’ roll really is. Retails for $16.95

Bonus material includes an NRBQ slide show, and a bonus video from the title track, 2004 release, “Dummy”.

BBC America's "Family":

Driving tests, teenage parties, annoying neighbors, young love and a never-ending job search are just a few of the trials and tribulations awaiting Robert Lindsay (G.B.H., Oliver Twist) and Zoë Wanamaker (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Gormenghast) in a new season (Season 2) of "My Family," Wednesdays from July 21, 2004 at 9:00 p.m. ET, 8:00 p.m. PT.

Family life never runs smoothly, at least that is the view of creator and U.S. sitcom writer Fred Barron (Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show and Caroline in the City). Based on his own family, he and a British team of writers have created a family that is funny but flawed.

Ben Harper (Robert Lindsay) is a dentist who finds family life a frightening prospect. His wisecracking wife, Susan (Zoë Wanamaker), is the one who keeps order in the busy household – although her culinary skills would be enough to make anyone leave home as soon as they were able.

The children, couch potato Nick (Kris Marshall, Love Actually), ‘mature’ Janey (Daniela Denby Ashe, EastEnders) and sensible Michael (Gabriel Thomson) bring their own problems to the family, making Ben wish he was far away from the disordered life in which he exists.

Brit Gardening: Back in the U.S. by popular demand this summer, the Ground Force America team pack up their gardening kits and head across the pond for an all-new season of inspirational makeover programming. New shows premiere every Tuesday night at 9:00 p.m. ET\PT beginning July 13 with Ground Force America: Santa Barbara.

Gardening goddesses Charlie Dimmock and Kirsty King join forces with construction kings Tommy Walsh and Will Shanahan to present five all-new episodes filmed across the west of the United States in California, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas. In each location the team have just 48 hours to secretly tackle and transform lame looking backyards while one of their owners is away from home. There are two new faces lending a helping hand this season, Tommy’s trusty building assistants, Jason and Chris.

New terrains create tough new challenges and exciting new creative possibilities for television’s original gardening gurus. From the slopes of the Santa Barbara hills to the desert landscapes of Santa Fe and Las Vegas and the stunning woodland backdrop of San Antonio, the Ground Force America team tame the wildest gardens and confront the trickiest problems to create awe-inspiring new spaces.

Incorporating regional plants and landscaping styles, Charlie and Tommy bestow stunning original garden designs to compliment the local style and culture of each new location. Look out for an artistic garden in Santa Fe with a southwestern flavour, a swinging pergola and path in an elegant Fort Worth garden and a majestic gothic ruin in the heart of Santa Barbara.

Get Your Retro Groove On:
Fast cars, dashing do-gooders, high-kicking heroes and international intrigue… The Avengers, The Saint and The Prisoner swing into action in BBC AMERICA’s new Friday night line-up beginning July 9, 2004 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET/PT.

Cool, classic and quintessentially British – Friday nights kick off with The Avengers as BBC AMERICA presents some of the show’s most popular episodes featuring Patrick Macnee (Scrooge, The Fantastic Seven) as debonair expert agent John Steed and Dame Diana Rigg (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Mrs. Bradley Mysteries) as aristocratic widow and amateur secret agent, Emma Peel.

Men envy him and women adore him… Roger Moore (A View to a Kill, Four Your Eyes Only) stars as Simon Templar – The Saint. In an action-packed hour of international intrigue, the debonair daredevil steals from criminals and keeps the spoils for himself.

Finally, BBC AMERICA offers one of the most ground-breaking series of the ’60s, The Prisoner. Patrick McGoohan (Danger Man, Mary, Queen of Scots) plays a man known only as Number 6 who wakes up in a surreal and disturbing place called “The Village” – where nothing is what it seems and everybody knows too much.

Another retro British series comes to Friday nights in November as two millionaire playboys team up to bring justice to an unjust world. Tony Curtis and Roger Moore star in The Persuaders.

Get Your Bling Here: Debra Savage the jewelry designer for Chad Allison Designs uses symbols in her jewelry line. One of her most popular is a cross with four equal sides. "This represents balance in life and was originally the symbol of the goddess," explains Savage from her Scottsdale design studio overlooking Camelback Mountain.

Fleur de lis and hearts are other themes running throughout the Chad Allison line. The collection features wide, diamond cuffs, large pendants, a large selection of diamond hoops and chandeliers and a collection of rings. The Chad Allison Collection has been expanded to include several new pieces.

A commonality to her line, "All my pieces are big. They make a statement. They are not for the meek woman," said Savage. They are, she insists, "for the woman who embraces excess - the woman who can buy for herself and will enjoy the purchase".

Chad Allison was co-founded in l999 by diamond dealer David Goldstein and designer Debra Savage. Prices range from $500 to$500,000. For information www.chadallison.com or 877.947.7844.

Celebs Get Comfy: Super hot Mischa Barton and Jessica Simpson are just two celebs who love the designs of Peddy Ebrahimian, 27. He created "One Life," a new sportswear line.

With no formal training, Peddy's inspiration comes from the streets. His marketing approach is also very "street." "The best way to advertise my line is for people to wear it," says Ebrahimian. "It's cut to fit and accentuate curves. It's comfortable, durable and extremely wearable and I want to get everyone-- from the hipster, or car pool mom, to the Ivy luncheon society babes sporting it."

Made from double-knit fabric the line is reversible and Ebrahimian likes the practicality of this design. "No one else is doing this, and today who has the time to shop for multipleoutfits or pack too much," says Peddy. "We live in a fast paced world. I like to pack and go".

"Cowgirl", the reversible line, is available at Fred Segal, and Kitson in Los Angeles, as well as on line in a variety of colors including reversible black to grey, pink to blue, grey to white and other solids including orange, baby blue, black, and tan. Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story The BeansTalk Review: Ben Stiller may have hits and misses, but he manages to score with his latest film, “Dodgeball,” which co-stars his wife, Christine Taylor and Vince Vaughn. The premise is simple: two rival, neighboring gyms – a high-tech, over-the-top facility run by the ridiculous White Goodman (Stiller) and one slovenly one, run by the nice-guy-who-needs-a-break Peter La Fleur (Vaughn). Taylor plays a lawyer negotiating the collapse of one and the rise of the other who falls for La Fleur. She’s a natural, credible actress (albeit almost distractingly too thin) who plays it straight among the wacky characters.

It may not be the most thought-provoking film of the year, but “Dodgeball” delivers consistent, nearly non-stop laughs that can be credited to the quick pacing and balanced acting. Balanced refers to the fact that writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber allows Stiller to be silly and exaggerated (although after actually meeting Tony Little, Goodman isn’t too far from actuality), and has La Fleur be deadpan, yet appealing. As a BeansTalk staffer noted, Vaughn seems to be channeling Bill Murray. Indeed, it’s a role Murray could easily have played. Because it’s not at such an A.D.D. hyper pitch and actually doesn’t try too hard or work to cover all its bases (and be simply not funny as comedies can be), it’s a very successful comedic film. There’s a minimum of gross-out factor, as well, keeping the humor surprisingly smart.

Swing Time! Music Video Distributors and Disconforme announce the release of The Swing Era DVD Series; they’ll be released on August 3, 2004 and retail for $19.95.

COUNT BASIE - SWING ERA
One of the legends of jazz, Count Basie (1904-1984) came to epitomize the very concept of swing. The fabled Basie, fronted two of the very best jazz orchestras ever: his classic 'Old Testament' line-up from 1935 to 1949 and a renewed, hard-swinging 'New Testament' band from 1952 onwards. If his early orchestra featured such legendary players as Lester Young, Harry Edison and Buck Clayton, or the relentless rhythm section of Basie on piano, Walter Page on bass, Freddie Green on guitar and Jo Jones on drums, the second Basie band was also a star-studded, powerhouse affair. The DVD is completed with different sounds showcasing Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Joe Turner, Henry Red Allen, Gene Krupa, Lucky Millinder and the dancer Bill Bojangles Robinson. (TRT 93 minutes)

BENNY GOODMAN - SWING ERA
The greatest of the jazz clarinetists, Benny Goodman (1909-1986) was universally known as "The King Of Swing". A colorful, extroverted personality and a top-notch performer, Goodman enjoyed a phenomenal string of hits all through the Thirties and Forties while fronting his powerhouse orchestra or resorting to the small-combo format. A charismatic figure, B.G. was also known for the quality of his bands, which at one time or another featured jazz greats such as Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Gene Krupa, Harry James or Charlie Christian. A household name for millions, Goodman is still remembered as one of the most influential musicians in the last century. A compilation of different clips featuring the great Benny Goodman and his band, this video is completed with a selection of assorted sounds from the Swing era starring star performers and bandleaders of the day such as Artie Shaw, Jimmy Dorsey, Hoagy Carmichael and Jack "Mr. T" Teagarden. (TRT 77 minutes)

DUKE ELLINGTON – IN HOLLYWOOD - SWING ERA
Duke Ellington (1899-1974) featured jazz greats such as Johnny Hodges, Ben Webster, Paul Gonsalves, Sidney Bechet, Cootie Williams, Harry Edison, Clark Terry, Barney Bigard, Jimmy Blanton, and a host of first-rate sidemen too numerous to mention. Ellington was also a superb composer who wrote literally thousands of songs (including numbers such as Flamingo, Take The A Train, Caravan, and countless other classics). Besides being a top-notch arranger, the Duke was also a restless, experimental artist by nature and a musician who never stopped recording from 1926 on. This video compiles different films starring the great Duke Ellington and his orchestra: Black And Tan (1929), Symphony in Black (1935 - featuring the famous sequence with Billie Holiday), plus assorted different musical sequences from other motion pictures, including the three scenes starring Mae West in the 1934 movie Belle Of The Nineties. (TRT 60 minutes)

GEORGE SHEARING – SWING ERA
The leader of one of the most popular combos in jazz during the fifties and early sixties, the blind George Shearing (born 1919) was reputed for his mastery at the piano, an instrument he played in a sophisticated style he termed 'locked hand.'
Shearing was also known for the unique sound of his quintet, which featured an unusual lineup, with the vibraphone and guitar tripling the melody. Shearing's very special sound proved fruitful during his heyday, when he was one of the best-selling jazzmen around. A notable composer, the blind pianist wrote numbers which have become classics. Lullaby of Birdland, Conception, Consternation... he employed Latin-oriented sidemen such as Mongo Santamaria, Willie Bobo or Cal Tjader and performed alongside jazz greats such as Oscar Pettiford, Peggy Lee, Wes Montgomery, Mel Torme or Jim Hall. Besides gathering different clips and sounds featuring the great George Shearing and his combo, this video includes additional numbers showcasing what we could term Fifties Swingers: Mel Torme, the Slam Stewart Trio, Slim Gaillard, the Bob Cats, and others, in all, a splendid compilation. (TRT 97 minutes)

Da Ali G Show's Back: According to Rolling Stone, "The best interviewer working in television today is not the host of 'Nightline' or 'Meet the Press.' His name is Ali G." Called "the funniest British comedy invasion since 'Monty
Python'" by the Detroit Free Press and "irresistibly, corrosively
funny" by the New York Times, he's back on HBO for a second season of six new episodes when "Da Ali G Show" returns Sunday, July 18, 2004 at 10:30 p.m. following the new comedy series "Entourage," with other editions debuting on subsequent Sundays at the same time.

Sacha Baron Cohen crosses America exploring different aspects of our culture through the unique points of view of his three alter-egos: Ali G, a "wanksta journalist," dressed in his trademark yellow track suit, wraparound glasses and pullover hat; Borat, Kazakhstan's premier journalist; and Bruno, the übercool Austrian fashionista.

Each show features real-world encounters between Ali G, Borat and
Bruno and real-life celebrities and everyday American citizens in a variety of settings. Among the notables interviewed on the show this season are journalist Sam Donaldson, conservative icon Pat Buchanan, former governor and EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman and educator-linguist Noam Chomsky.

Edition #7: "Respek"

Ali G talks with Sam Donaldson, "boss man of ABC News," about
Nixon's "Waterworld" crisis, journalist biases and TV ratings, among other critical issues. Borat over-imbibes with a pair of genial gents at a wine tasting in Mississippi. Ali G probes the legal travails of "The Simpsons" with former LAPD police chief Daryl Gates, then questions a pair of ATF dog trainers about bomb-sniffers and canine discrimination.

Edition #8: "Peace" debuts Sunday, July 25, 2004

Ali G has a serious sit-down with conservative icon Pat Buchanan,
pondering the prospect of presidential partnerships, "him"igration pros and cons, and Iraq's possession of "BLTs." Borat hits the campaign trail in Oklahoma with a congressional candidate, then delivers a speech to the City Council after getting tips from the state's Republican Party chairman. Ali G presides over a family roundtable discussion with Michael Easley (senior pastor, The Immanuel Bible Church), Karen Mulhauser (Veteran Feminists of America), Diane Knippers (president of the Institute of Religion and Democracy) and Roger Lancaster (professor of Anthropology and Cultural Studies), then visits a farm in search of the answer to a question on everybody's mind: Why are there are so many Vietnam veterinarians?

Around the World in 80 Days: The BeansTalk Review In Jackie Chan’s latest film, he gets to show off those amazing choreographic skills – not just the masterful martial arts – but the ability to use props in a calculated chaotic fluid way. The film is a remake of the classic 50s film, starring David Niven and Cantinflas (Chan plays the latter’s part), in which a London-based eccentric inventor (Steve Coogan, as Phineas Fogg) must travel around the world in 80 days to win a bet (as well as his future career and pride). Along the way, the once introverted scientist finds friendship and love – and plenty of wacky adventures.

In the 1999 documentary in which Chan proudly shows where his ideas come from (he clips articles, photographs, keeps massive binders, bulletin boards, anything that might turn into one of his signature exchanges) and each of those – here, using a wooden bench, the Statue of Liberty, among many – is used to great effect.

But the notion of building a film around Chan’s brilliance doesn’t quite work. For starters, the original “Around the World in 80 Days” was so steeped in the pop culture of the time it was made (1956). What’s unfortunate in this remake is that little effort was affected to make this version funny to a contemporary audience. There are, in all seriousness, probably only a couple of laughs in this two-hour film. One is in Chan’s trademark fight sequences and the other is from a cameo by his “Shanghai Knights” co-star, Owen Wilson.

The audience isn’t ever really catapulted into 1872, when the film is set. It uses its version of “magical realism” – beautiful, colorful transitional art – to move between the many locations the film is supposed to take its characters and audience to, but moreover, director Frank Coraci is more about the wink-wink celebrity cameos, holding the camera lovingly and pointedly on each of his “guest stars.” Never mind that many of these are wholly nonsensical.

Even the costumes and make-up in this film – which is sweeping in its very premise – seem thrown together carelessly. But most disappointing is the script and dialogue, none of which can be saved by the pretty sets or even Chan’s charm.

NOT “Dirty Dancing, Havana Nights”: Siegfried and Roy present the U.S. debut of “Havana Night Club—The Show” Friday, July 30, 2004 at the Stardust Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The contemporary Cuban music and dance features a cast of more than 50 Cuban dancers, musicians and singers and is the first show of its size and caliber to emanate from Cuba and play on U.S. soil in more than a half century. It’s played to more than two million fans in 16 countries around the world since 1999 . Siegfried and Roy exclaim, "We've witnessed the magic of this show and felt compelled to bring its electrifying energy to Las Vegas. This is one party you can't miss!" The show also features the 13-piece award-winning Cubaximo band and singers. "I wanted the world to see, through this show, the glorious untouched talent of Havana," said Nicole "ND" Durr, producer, creator and artistic director. "Every beat and every note is filled with vitality and unbridled energy. The audience is invited to a party made up of glorious colors, rhythm, dance and music."

Durr joined forces with presenters and associate producers Siegfried & Roy, the illusionist team who began their careers in Las Vegas on the same stage at the Stardust over 28 years ago, along with Emmy-Award winning director and choreographer Kenny Ortega (Barbra Streisand, Cher, Madonna, Opening Ceremony/Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Games) and set designer Michael Cotton, (Gloria Estefan, N'Sync, Michael Jackson and Aerosmith) who designed each of the show's 16 elaborate scenes. Tickets are on-sale now at the Stardust Resort and Casino Box and by calling 1-866-525-2077 for show ticket reservations.

This is NOT Your Father’s Arthur Godfrey: There’s a new Arthur Godfrey -- the blue-collar son of a Boston fireman returns to New York for a June 30, 2004 showcase at the Laurie Beechman Theater beneath the West Bank Café. In May, Godfrey got a Page 6 notice in the New York Post after playing a private party at the West Bank hosted by Sean Penn. His show was seen by Al Pacino, Chris Noth, Catherine Keener, Sean Lennon, Elizabeth Jagger and others.

Penn tracked Godfrey down after catching one of his sets at a Memphis dive two years before, and has been one of his biggest supporters ever since. Penn flew Godfrey and band out to perform at the wrap party for "21 Grams." Godfrey even has a brief cameo in Penn's forthcoming film
about Richard Nixon.

Several of Godfrey's songs from his two independent releases have won awards. In 2001, "Simple Man" won the Grand Prize in the Folk Category of the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Contest. He repeated as a Grand Prize Winner two years later, with the song "Amen. In the Billboard Songwriting contest of 2001, his song "Danielle" took second prize. He's currently in the studio working on a third record, and the recent media attention has drawn the interest of several major record labels.

While spending 20 years working for the U.S. Postal Service in towns across the country, Godfrey never forgot about growing up on the wrong side of the tracks on the outskirts of Boston. He collected stories that would blossom into vivid character sketches of the shattered and downtrodden, as well as the blue collar everyday heroes of American life. "I just want to make a working man's living by playing music, case closed," he says.

Captured One of the most talked-about films of 2003, the Academy Award nominee “Capturing the Friedmans” landed on more than 150 top ten film critics' lists last year and won a host of major awards, including the 2003 Sundance Grand Jury Prize. Debuting Thursday, July 8, 2004 at 9 p.m. on HBO, director Andrew Jarecki's documentary feature film debut riveted viewers with its exploration of a seemingly normal family embroiled in one of the strangest criminal cases in American history. “Just a Clown,” the short film Jarecki was making when he discovered the Friedmans' story, debuts the following evening, Friday, July 9, 2004 at 7:30 p.m.

With a predilection for hamming it up in front of home-movie cameras, the Friedmans were a seemingly normal middle-class family living in the affluent New York suburb of Great Neck. One Thanksgiving, as the family gathers at home for a quiet holiday dinner, their front door explodes, splintered by a police battering ram. Officers rush into the house, accusing Arnold Friedman and his youngest son Jesse of hundreds of shocking crimes.

“Capturing the Friedmans” follows their story from the public's perspective and through unique home-movie footage of the family in crisis, shot inside the Friedman house. Sullied by scandal, vilified by the media and haunted by damning secrets from the past, the family begins to disintegrate, raising provocative questions about justice, family and, ultimately, truth.

The New Yorker called the film "a masterpiece" that "demonstrates the audacity, the evenhandedness, the sense of detail and structural power worthy of such accomplished documentary filmmakers as Marcel Ophuls and Frederick Wiseman." The New York Times hailed the documentary as "one of the most astonishing debut features ever," while Entertainment Weekly described it as an "extraordinary film...gripping, lacerating, moving and haunting."

Hot Dude: With a RIAA-gold-certified self-titled Capitol Nashville album in hand, Dierks Bentley was named Top New Artist from the Academy of Country Music at ceremonies held last month in Las Vegas. He was also named one of People Magazine’s Hottest Bachelors, in the issue that comes out tomorrow, June 18, 2004. Bentley can also boast: CMT’s 2004 Flameworthy Breakthrough Video of the Year (for "What Was I Thinkin¹") Best New Country Act in the 2003 Country Music Critic¹s Poll; #1 Top New Country Artist of 2003 in Billboard Magazine; Music Row Magazine¹s Breakout Artist of 2003; and Best New Act by the Country Music Critics Poll.

Teams of Mammals, Birds, Fish, Herpitiles and Insects will vie for gold, in events such as the 100-Meter Dash, 100-Meter Swim, High Jump, Long Jump, Weightlifting and Shooting.

Poised: In the aftermath of opening for Britney Spears on the “Onyx Hotel Tour,” Skye Sweetnam’s debut album, NOISE FROM THE BASEMENT, from the 16 year-old Capitol recording artist is due in stores later this summer. Her girl-power anthem, "Number One,” is currently being featured in national TV spots for the WNBA.

Scot Rockers : Scottish rockers Idlewild will play two special acoustic shows previewing material from their forthcoming new album at L.A.'s Hotel Cafe on July 5th and 6th. Idlewild's last album, The Remote Part (2003), was one of the year's best-loved albums, a mainstay on endless "best of" lists and critics' polls. In a four-star review, Rolling Stone called it the band's "third and strongest LP...elevating them heads above their musical kin." Formed in Edinburgh in 1995 as a quartet of distortion-wielding punks, Idlewild quickly ranked among the brightest of a new crop of tuneful, punk-influenced bands overseas. But 2001's 100 Broken Windows, a breakthrough hit with U.S. critics and fans, made them *the* literate alt-rock find of that year and beyond.
