Kirk Douglas Special Guest
2011 TCM Classic Film Festival
Celebration of Actor’s Life and Career to
Include Conversation with Robert Osborne,
Clips from One-Man Show and Special
Screening of Spartacus (1960)
Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas will be a special guest at the 2011 TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. During the festival, which takes place April 28-May 1, the three-time Oscar® nominee and honorary Academy Award® winner will join TCM host Robert Osborne for an interview on stage, leading into a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s epic film Spartacus (1960), which Douglas also produced. The evening’s festivities will include clips from Douglas’ biographical one-man show, Before I Forget (2009).
“Kirk Douglas is an American icon whose performances have struck an indelible chord with moviegoers for more than 60 years,” Osborne said. “At the age of 94, he retains the great vitality and enthusiasm which has always been the Douglas trademark. We couldn’t be more pleased that Spartacus himself will be joining us at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood in April.”
Prior to the festival’s screening of Spartacus, Douglas and Osborne will sit down for a conversation about the actor’s life and career. They will present fascinating clips from Douglas’ Before I Forget, which premiered at the Center Theater Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, Calif., in May 2009.
Douglas’ powerful and intense performance in Spartacus is considered among the actor’s finest. Based on a historical novel by Howard Fast, the film centers on Douglas as a famed gladiator who leads a massive slave revolt against Roman authorities. Tony Curtis, Jean Simmons, Laurence Olivier, Charles Laughton and Oscar winner Peter Ustinov co-star. Spartacus earned Oscars for its art direction-set decoration, cinematography and costume design, with additional nominations for film editing and Alex North’s score.
Although Spartacus is now considered one of the best examples of the epic genre, its reception in 1960 was not quite so welcoming, in large part because screenwriter Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted as a communist sympathizer. Douglas insisted on giving Trumbo on-screen credit, which drew the ire of powerful columnists like Hedda Hopper and organizations such as the American Legion. Despite the naysayers, Spartacus effectively ended the blacklist, allowing banned filmmakers to work openly once again.
The archetypal Hollywood movie star of the post-war era, Douglas built a career with virile, masculine and often-intense performances in more than 80 films. He earned Oscar nominations for performances in Stanley Kramer’s Champion (1949) and Vincente Minnelli’s The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and Lust for Life (1957). Among his other film credits are The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946), Mourning Becomes Electra (1947), Out of the Past (1947), I Walk Alone (1948), Ace in the Hole (1951), Detective Story (1951), Big Sky (1952), The Story of Three Loves (1953), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Paths of Glory (1957), Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), The Devil’s Disciple (1959), Lonely Are the Brave (1962), The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), Seven Days in May (1964), Is Paris Burning? (1966), The Arrangement (1969), The Fury (1978), The Man from Snowy River (1983), Tough Guys (1986), Greedy (1994), Diamonds (1999) and It Runs in the Family (2003), the latter co-starring his eldest son, Michael. Douglas earned his first of three Emmy® nominations for the television film Amos (1985), which led him to become active in the cause of elderly abuse.
Throughout his career, Douglas has been an innovator and a rebel. In addition to challenging the Hollywood blacklist, he was one of the first A-list talents to wrest control of his career by founding an independent production company. And in the 1970s, he began a second career as a writer, while also focusing his energies on the philanthropic efforts of The Douglas Foundation. Today, at the age of 94, Douglas remains extremely active. He is a regular blogger with more than 12,000 followers on his MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/kirkdouglas). In 2007, the social networking service named Douglas their oldest celebrity blogger.
The TCM Classic Film Festival’s tribute to Kirk Douglas is the latest major event to be added to the ever-expanding lineup. Other film luminaries scheduled to take part in the festival include Peter O’Toole, Leslie Caron, Mickey Rooney, Debbie Reynolds, Jane Powell, Warren Beatty, Alec Baldwin, Hayley Mills, Richard Roundtree and Roger Corman.

Robbie Robertson's New Album Out April 5, 2011
Robbie Robertson's Latest
"How To Become a Clairvoyant"
NPR Music's "First Listen,"
appearances on
"Late Show With David Letterman,"
"The View"; "Rockline"
Robbie Robertson will perform his Top 10 single "He Don't Live Here No More" on "Late Show with David Letterman" on April 5th, coinciding with release of his new album, How To Become Clairvoyant (Macro-Biotic Records/429 Records). He'll also appear on "The View" on April 6th. The shows will mark the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer's first television appearances in more than 10 years.
NPR Music is giving fans an exclusive "First Listen" to How To Become Clairvoyant, streaming the album in its entirety for a week, beginning today. This Saturday, April 2nd, Robertson will be inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF). In June, Canada Post will issue a stamp with Robertson's likeness as part of its Canadian Recording Artists stamp series. He will guest on the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" on April 6th and tape "World Café with David Dye" in May while at WXPN's Non-COMMvention.
How To Become Clairvoyant features Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Trent Reznor, Tom Morello and Robert Randolph along with vocalists Angela McCluskey, Rocco Deluca, Dana Glover and Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes). The collection was co-produced by Robertson and long-time collaborator Marius de Vries (Massive Attack, Björk, Rufus Wainwright).
"This soulful record is Robertson's best yet," observed Goldmine. "For all of the now-legendary songs that Robertson penned, he tended to shy away from writing about himself, which makes the revealing nature of his first album in more than ten years such a wonderful surprise," said Relix. "How To Become Clairvoyant finds Robertson tackling personal topics such as his breakup with The Band ('This Is Where I Get Off'), the guitarists who inspired his innovative sound ('Axman') and his early days backing Ronnie Hawkins ('When the Night Was Young')."
In addition to the CD, three special editions of How To Become Clairvoyant will be available. The deluxe edition, available exclusively at Best Buy for a month beginning April 5th, will include a second CD with demos of five of the album's tracks - "The Right Mistake," "He Don't Live Here No More," "Fear of Falling," "This Is Where I Get Off" and "Madame X" - and an outtake of "Houdini," a song that does not appear on the album. Starting April 5th, fans can pre-order a two-disc, gatefold edition of How To Become Clairvoyant on 180-gram vinyl and a limited edition collector's set at www.robbie-robertson.com.The collector's set includes the vinyl and CD editions of the album plus 10 bonus tracks, provided in both CD and vinyl formats, a DVD with three multi-track mixes, a 70-page, full-color book with album artwork, lithographs and additional art, and other cool extras such as a set of tarot cards designed especially for the collection.

Lucy Deakins: From
Actress to Attorney
We were watching a 1991 episode of "Law and Order" and were surprised to see Lucy Deakins, who we best remember for director Nick Castle's "The Boy Who Could Fly." She also spent a year on the soap "As the World Turns," from 1984 to 1985. Pretty and earnest, the New York native seemed to have disappeared from the acting world. The daughter of two university professors, she graduated in 1994 from Harvard, with a degree in comparative religion. She backpacked across Europe, moved to Port Townsend, Washington and dabbled in different occupations. Deakins enrolled in boatbuilding school, worked as an EMT and signed up to be a firefighter. She eventually became a paralegal and moved to Denver, Colorado in 1999, the same year she married her husband, J.J. Arnold, a painter and sculptor. Their daughter Mason was born in February 2000 and two years later the family moved to New York City. She enrolled in law school in Seattle, graduated in 2007. Although she was admitted to the New York Bar, the family returned to Denver and is a an attorney at Fulbright & Jaworski.

New Upstairs, Downstairs
PBS To Air New
Upstairs, Downstairs
One of the most anticipated treats on the BBC’s holiday broadcast schedule is the return of Upstairs Downstairs, the Edwardian era miniseries that ran and ran on Masterpiece Theatre. The new three-parter—which premieres in the U.S. in April on MASTERPIECE on PBS—takes up the story in 1936, a bumpy year in British history. Parlormaid Rose finds herself back at 165 Eaton Place serving as housekeeper to its new owners: Sir Hallam Holland (Ed Stoppard—yes Tom Stoppard’s son) and his wife Lady Agnes (Keeley Hawes, MI-5, Wives & Daughters). Reprising her role as Rose is co-creator Jean Marsh (Sense & Sensibility), who won an Emmy for her work in the original series. This time around series co-creator Dame Eileen Atkins (Cranford, Gosford Park) also has an onscreen part to play: as Hallam’s formidable mother, Maud. Per Radio Times, even Wallis Simpson will swan through the action. Fingers crossed that BBC will commission more. Look for the DVD next spring. We’d tell you to bone up on the original with a reasonably priced purchase from the Shop, but the original Upstairs Downstairs DVD set has been off the market since August. (Never fear, it’s coming back–we just can’t say when yet.) Finally we’re working with AudioGo, our BBC audiobooks business, to bring you a real tie-in treat—a five disc audiobook of Jean Marsh (Rose) reading the John Hawkesworth Upstairs Downstairs novel.

Rarely Seen Cinematic Gems
On TCM Sunday, April 3, 2011
Lineup Includes Fragments: Surviving Pieces of Lost Films;
10th Anniversary Presentation of Unseen Cinema:
Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will take viewers on an eye-opening cinematic journey with a night of rarely seen gems on Sunday, April 3. The evening will open with Fragments: Surviving Pieces of Lost Films, a two-hour program of segments from films that have otherwise been lost to history, as well as interviews with people involved in making and preserving these films. Then, a special 10th anniversary presentation of Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941 will mesmerize viewers with a 2 ½-hour collection of 16 experimental, mind-bending works from the early days of cinema. Both collections feature work by well-known filmmakers and performers, including director John Ford and a teen-age Charlton Heston.
“This night of rare movie treasures is the latest demonstration of TCM’s commitment to film preservation and to showcase the efforts of the world’s leading film archives,” said TCM host Robert Osborne. “With as many as 80% of all pre-1930 films lost or damaged beyond repair, Fragments stands as a testament to cinematic treasures that have been claimed by the ravages of time. And celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, Unseen Cinema provides a look at some of early film’s most imaginative visions, most of which have never been presented in a major public forum.”
Fragments: Surviving Pieces of Lost Films, which was inspired by a similar presentation at last year’s TCM Classic Film Festival, opens the April 3 lineup at 8 p.m. (ET). Produced by Flicker Alley, the two-hour showcase features nine thematically arranged segments and case studies of clips preserved by some of the leading film archives in the country, including the Academy Film Archive, the UCLA Film & Television Archive and the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation.
Among the pieces featured in Fragments are the final reel of John Ford’s The Village Blacksmith (1922) and a glimpse at Emil Jannings in The Way of All Flesh (1927), the only Oscar-winning performance in a lost film. Fragments also features clips from such lost films as Cleopatra (1917), starring Theda Bara; The Miracle Man (1919), with Lon Chaney; He Comes Up Smiling (1918), starring Douglas Fairbanks; an early lost sound film, Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929), filmed in early Technicolor, and the only color footage of silent star Clara Bow, Red Hair (1928). The program is rounded out with interviews of film preservationists involved in identifying and restoring these films. Also featured is a new interview with Diana Serra Cary, best known as “Baby Peggy,” one of the major American child stars of the silent era, who discusses one of the featured fragments, Darling of New York (1923).
At 10 p.m. (ET), Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant Garde Film 1894-1941 will salute the rich – but often unheralded – artistry of avant garde and experimental filmmakers during cinema’s formative years. TCM’s presentation includes 16 titles hand-chosen by archivists Bruce Posner and David Shepard from their world-renowned 175-film retrospective, which premiered in Moscow in June 2001. Posner and Shepard also selected material from the acclaimed Unseen Cinema seven-disc DVD collection, released in 2005.
TCM’s Unseen Cinema showcase features such intriguing works as a pagan dance sequence from Peer Gynt (1941), starring a 17-year-old Charlton Heston; Annabell Dances and Dances (1894-97), a pioneering attempt to capture dance on film; a dream sequence from Beggar on Horseback (1925), featuring popular character actor Edward Everett Horton; Carousel – Animal Opera (c.1938), a visual symphony by artist and sculptor Joseph Cornell; and Ballet mécanique (1923-24), Fernand Léger and Dudley Murphy’s abstract collage of machines, objects and shapes set to a radical George Antheils score reconstructed by Paul Lehrman.

Patrick Dempsey Hosts
John Varvatos' Celebration
of 8th Annual Stuart House Benefit
John Varvatos celebrated the 8th Annual Stuart House Benefit at his Los Angeles boutique. The event, hosted by Jillian and Patrick Dempsey, closed down the streets of Melrose and Robertson in the heart of West Hollywood to raise over $500,000 for Stuart House. Over 1,500 guests were treated to an afternoon of great food, luxury shopping, live and silent auctions and fun filled children’s activities. The event’s emcee, Bill Bellamy, hosted the live auction and introduced the special rock n’ roll performance featuring k.d. lang & the Siss Boom Bang, with opening act Franky Perez.
The event and its host committee members, which included entertainment industry heavyweights, Richard Weitz, Michael & Shannon Rotenberg and Linda & Bob Gersh, brought an eclectic ensemble of actors and musicians, including Alberta Cross, Brooke Burke, Damien Fahey, Dan Cortese, Daniel Sunjata, David Schwimmer, Donovan Leitch, Eva LaRue, Glenn Hughes, GW Bailey, James Pickens Jr., James Van Der Beek, Jayma Mays, Jesse Williams, JK Simmons, Julie Benz, Justin Chambers, KaDee Strickland, Kevin McKidd, Kropp Circle, LL COOL J, Melina Kanakaredes, Michael Moloney, Michael Paul Chan, Omar Epps, Omar Sharif Jr., Phillip Keene, Ryan Eggold, Sam Page, Taylor Armstrong, Trevor Donovan and Zoe Saldana. Billy Idol showed up last minute to join the party and hang out with his buddies Perry Farrell, Mick Rock, and John Varvatos.
The benefit hit full stride as Gail Abarbanel, the Founder and Director of Stuart House, and John Varvatos took the stage to welcome guests, share the charity’s accomplishments and introduce event chairs Jillian and Patrick Dempsey. While on stage, Patrick addressing the audience said, “The work that Stuart House does is remarkable. Your presence today helps make the amazing free treatment that Stuart House provides possible.”
Bill Bellamy commenced the live auction by saying, “Today we are going to raise money for an amazing cause that is making a difference for kids.” The live auction featured a dozen HD camcorders donated by FLIP. The FLIP cams were auctioned off to guests, dubbed “Stuart House Angels,” who used them to film the event’s activities. 100% of all live and silent auction proceeds directly benefited Stuart House.
After a full comedic review during the live auction, where Bill Bellamy attempted to jokingly auction off the Greys Anatomy cast, he then introduced the afternoon’s opening act, Franky Perez, who quickly got the crowd rockin’ with his intense, edgy and energetically unique performance.
Franky Perez, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and awe-inspiring performer is also an honorary member of the All Star Supergroup, Camp Freddy. His past performances have included Billy Gibbons, Slash, Steve Vai, Courtney Love, Steve Stevens, Chrissie Hynde and Robin Zander. He’s also performed with Velvet Revolver, Metallica and been on the mic backed by great stars like Ronnie Wood, Jason Bonham and Ringo Starr.
The main performance by, k.d. lang and the Siss Boom Bang was legendary. The band played songs from the new album Sing it Loud, which is being released in North America on April 12th, 2011. For their encore k.d. lang performed the crowd favorite, Constant Craving and the whole audience sang along.
In 2010, k.d. lang marked the 25th anniversary of her recording debut with Recollection, a career retrospective. To date, lang has been honored with four GRAMMY awards, eight Juno awards, a BRIT, an AMA, a VMA, and four awards from GLAAD. In 1996, she received Canada’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Canada. Sing it Loud is k.d. lang’s first studio album since 2008’s Watershed, and the first record made entirely with a band of her own in over 20 years.
k.d. lang expressed her sincere thoughts on the event by saying, “When one is dedicated to the service of others there is no better thing on earth, and no better climate than this. I think what John is doing is amazing!”
John Varvatos stated, “It is wonderful to see this kind of turnout and be able to raise money and awareness for such a worthy cause. Franky Perez got the crowd on their feet and k.d. lang was simply electric!”
Legendary rock n’ roll photographer, Mick Rock—who has photographed the likes of Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Queen—donated his time and amazing talent for the event by offering personal family portraits with all proceeds donated to Stuart House. Shepard Fairey, who was the in-store deejay for the afternoon, made sure to take a turn in front of Mick Rock’s lens.
Mick Rock said, “The event was sublime! I saw a lot of old friends and thought it was amazing to have so much fun while serving a cause that John supports.”
Attending guests of all ages mingled and savored the delicious hors d’oeuvres provided by Firenze Osteria, Magnolia Bakery, Diddy Reise, Cuties and Jackie’s Bakery, along with the trendy food trucks In-N-Out Burger, Hot Dog On A Stick and Green Truck. Cocktails and beverages were served courtesy of Patron Tequila, Ultimat Vodka, Cielo Malibu Wineyards, Stella Artois Beer, Icelandic H2O Glacial Water, POM Wonderful Juices and Rockstar Energy Drink.
A huge hit in the kid’s tent Justin Incredible, who performed magic tricks for their entertainment, and Buster Balloon whose balloon sculptures of sharks, monkeys, and dinosaurs fascinated adults and children alike. Converse graciously supplied Children’s Chuck Taylor Hi-Tops available for personal customizing and decorating. Build-A-Bear Workshop generously donated their Champ and Endless Hugs bears to personalize. For every bear purchased and created, a second was donated for a child of Stuart House. Brooke Burke talked with friends in the kid’s tent while her kids were decorating cookies. Taylor Armstrong took pictures of her daughter with Justin Kredible.
Gail stated, “Today brought tremendous support and awareness to the issue of sexual child abuse, and was an extraordinary expression of our community’s support for the care and treatment of these children.”

Celebrity Hairstylist David Babaii for Couture Colour wanted to achieve a “Playful Ponytail” with a hint of Bridget Bardot for Nicole Kidman’s 2011 Oscar look.
Get Nicole Kidman's Look:
David always begins every red carpet look with clean hair followed by applying Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment (now available at www.sephora.com ) to her entire head. It is derived from the Pequi fruit, known for centuries as the beauty secret of the Amazon Rainforest. Once applied, David is amazed at how Nicole’s beautiful red hair color constantly looks fresh and vibrant. The Pequi Oil Treatment also instantly absorbs leaving hair smooth and shiny. He then sectioned off a bang and cut a French fringe to frame the face. Next, he blow dried Nicole’s hair with the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Ionic Dryer that supplies super-fast drying power along with a large round brush. At the bang area, he gently bumped the ends under. After the hair was dried, he applied an additional amount of Pequi Oil to create a smooth and shiny surface. To begin the “Playful Ponytail” up-do, he used his hands to sweep the hair into a ponytail creating a slight bump at the crown and securing with a band. To finish the French fringe, David added additional Pequi Oil (www.sephora.com ) to his fingers to define.

David Babaii for Couture Colour known for achieving red carpet perfection, created “Texture Infusion” for Sandra Bullock’s 2011 Oscar look.
Get Bullock's Look:
Start with a clean canvas by rinsing all the shampoo and conditioner from the hair. After gently towel drying, David applied Couture Colour Pequi Oil Treatment (now available at www.sephora.com) to the hair, using a wide tooth comb to evenly distribute the product. The Pequi Oil tames frizz, mends split ends while providing hair with incredible softness and shine. Then, he dried her hair with a round brush for a smooth finish. Once dry, David applied additional Pequi Oil (www.sephora.com ) and brushed her hair straight back. With the IT&LY HAIRFASHION Digital Styling Iron, he took random half inch sections starting at the front and twisted the hair. Once the strand is twisted, take your flat iron and press down the entire length of the strand to set a wavy texture in. Allow each strand to cool and release itself naturally. David continued taking half inch sections throughout the front half of her head until he achieved enough texture. When complete, additional Pequi Oil (www.sephora.com ) was added to his hands to finger comb the hair back into a ponytail above the nape area. He then wrapped her hair around the band and secured with bobby pins allowing any loose hairs to fall naturally. This will give you David’s version of “Texture Infusion” which is a combination of texture enhanced with Pequi Oil to achieve a brilliant shine.
