New Nirvana Book
Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989 Features Dozens of Never-Before Seen Early Photographs of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana's Original Lineup
Sub Pop Founder Bruce Pavitt Returns to Public View with E-Book About Nirvana's Pivotal First European Tour
A Portion of Proceeds From Book Sales Will Go to
The Vera Project in Seattle
Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989, a historic photo journal of the band's pivotal first European tour featuring dozens of never-before seen early photographs of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana's original lineup, is now available exclusively on Apple's iBookstore.
Independently published by Sub Pop founder Bruce Pavitt and filled with an unexpected trove of previously unseen photos from his personal collection, the immersive digital book-a "grunge micro-history"-chronicles Nirvana's legendary 1989 maiden voyage overseas from a truly intimate perspective for the first time.
A portion of the proceeds from book sales will go to the Vera Project (http://theveraproject.org/) in Seattle. Vera is an all-ages volunteer fueled music and arts venue. By engaging participants at all levels of music production and community organizing, Vera strives to fulfill its mission to foster a participatory creative culture through popular music concerts, arts programs, experiential learning and volunteer opportunities for all ages, especially young people. Vera's programs are always all ages, with a focus on young people ages 14 to 24.
Pavitt did a "Meet the Author" session at the SOHO Apple Store (103 Prince Street, New York, NY 10012) Friday, November 16, at 7 pm. He did a short reading, a Q&A session with legendary rock journalist Michael Azzarad and fielded questions from the audience. Pavitt then went to the Ace Hotel (20 W 29th Street, New York, NY 10001) and DJ'd a grunge set from 12 am - 2 am.
Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989 provides an inside look into a crucial eight-day period in the life of pre-fame Nirvana. Pavitt, who had signed the band to Sub Pop, connected with them in Rome, as they were finishing up a grueling European tour with fellow label-mates Tad. Pavitt followed the bands to London, where Nirvana and Tad would support headlining act Mudhoney to perform the biggest showcase of their careers, "LameFest UK." Nirvana's stunning opening performance that night at the Astoria Theater won over both fans and the influential British music press, and marked the beginning of their ascension from humble opening act to global superstars.
The book's photos, taken by Pavitt with an Olympus pocket camera, were shot randomly and intuitively on venue stages, in dressing rooms, submerged in sweaty roiling crowds and while walking among the great monuments of Europe with a future icon who had only recently tasted life outside of his native Aberdeen. The candid, spontaneously shot images -- sometimes out-of-focus or oddly cropped -- enhance the book's uniquely honest, revealing, and intimate feel. Mojo magazine's Keith Cameron, who was among the press who attended the "LameFest UK" show, penned the forward. The book also includes an interactive map tracing the tour's progress across Europe and reprints of original UK press coverage from 1989.
EW.com spoke with Pavitt about Experiencing Nirvana: Grunge in Europe, 1989. You can check out the interview at http://music-mix.ew.com/2012/11/12/experiencing-nirvana-kurt-cobain-bruce-pavitt/.
The book marks Pavitt's return to the public after moving to Washington state's remote Orcas Island following his departure from Sub Pop in 1996. Pavitt was compelled to create the book following his re-discovery of the photos, his desire to share a truly intimate look into Kurt Cobain's less-chronicled musical adolescence with the world, and to correct the historical misconception of grunge as a soundtrack for anguish and depression instead of the loud, sweaty, joyous and fun music he experienced at its inception.
Pavitt was also driven by recognizing Apple's iBooks Author book creation app as the natural evolution of the DIY 'zine culture where he first cut his teeth. Pavitt and collaborator Dan Burke created the book with iBooks Author, and are self-publishing exclusively on Apple's iBookstore.

Aaron Nevill
Aaron Nevill Tours/New Album
Iconic soul/R&B vocalist Aaron Neville launches a pre-order for his upcoming new album My True Story, his debut for EMI’s Blue Note Records that will be released on January 22nd, 2013. As of today, the album is available for pre-order at Amazon.com and BN.com.
My True Story finds Neville revitalizing some of his favorite songs from the doo-wop era and beyond, including “Tears on My Pillow” and “Under the Boardwalk,” and performing them in his inimitable vocal style. The album, which was produced by Keith Richards and Blue Note Records President Don Was, finds Neville backed by a top-flight rock & roll band, led by the distinctive, propulsive guitar work of Richards himself. The other musicians include Greg Leisz on guitar (Beck, Sheryl Crow), Benmont Tench on organ (founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), George G. Receli on drums (Bob Dylan), and Tony Scherr on bass (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones).
Aaron appeared with The Neville Brothers on the November 4th episode of HBO’s acclaimed series Treme, which is set in Neville’s hometown of New Orleans. The episode, directed by Tim Robbins, takes place as preparations are being made for Mardi Gras in 2008 with The Neville Brothers performing at the Washington DC Mardi Gras Ball. Aaron has a cameo in addition to singing the lead on “Louisana 1927.”
Neville performed at the annual Gala for The Doe Fund, a New York nonprofit organization that helps formerly homeless men and women achieve independence and self-sufficiency. The Gala was dedicated to the formal expansion of Operation Opportunity, a social services and transitional employment program catering to the needs of returning veterans. Neville, who performed in support of the cause, reflected about his own connection to The Doe Fund and the “men in blue.” “In my life, I have faced starting over many times,” he says. “As a youth, I wrestled with drug addiction and was incarcerated, and I know how tough it can be to get a second chance and make it work out. I support The Doe Fund because of their tremendous work in breaking the cycles of homelessness, addiction, and criminal patterns and helping individuals become self-sufficient and productive.”
Lastly, Neville kicked off his yearly Christmas Celebration tour on December 1st, during which he will perform holiday songs, fan-favorite hits, and new songs from My True Story. All tour dates are listed below. Neville was on the road over the summer and earned rave reviews, with the Orlando Sentinel reporting that “Neville made everything look easy. From the gospel of ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ to the nostalgic ‘Tell It Like Is,’ that voice is nothing but soul."

36 Elephant and Trueheart Events partner to produce a PSA campaign
in support of LGBT Equality and the non-profit Friendfactor
From BeansTalk friend, Amy Malin: Amy Malin, partner at special event & public relations firm Trueheart Events, teamed up with her long time friend and colleague Denny Marte and his producing partner at 36 Elephant Cristian “Koko” Stambuk, to produce a public service announcement (PSA) campaign in support of LGBT equality and the non-profit Friendfactor.
“This is one of the most important issues in our lifetime, to ensure that everyone is entitled to the same rights and freedoms. The fact that in 2012 there are people who want to police other people’s love and commitment, is an embarrassment to the human race. Standing up for equality for ALL is a human issue. Being gay doesn’t make you any less of a human being, but discriminating against someone who is gay, well, there isn’t anything humane about that to me, “ said Amy Malin. “I have many friends who are gay and to think that they can’t get married or have a family the way that I can is heartbreaking. It is hard enough to find your soul mate, and then once you do, if you’re gay, you’re told that you can’t legally be recognized as a married couple, or as a family if you want to have children. This blatant discrimination is a violation against the LGBT community’s same rights that heterosexual citizens have to enjoy life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. So when I discussed this issue with my dear friend Denny Marte and his producing partner Koko Stambuk, we all decided to utilize our talents to take a stand for something we believe in,” continued Amy Malin.
With Denny’s background as a highly successful record executive and music manager and Koko’s acclaimed career as a GRAMMY nominated recording artist and songwriter, their new venture with their production company 36 Elephant is destined for success. In recent years, Koko has stepped behind the camera to direct award winning music videos and commercial campaigns which have featured Lenny Kravitz and Kate Moss to name a few. 36 Elephant is currently in the process of raising funding for their first feature film.
The trio of Denny Marte, Koko Stambuk and Amy Malin, decided to pool their collective talents, experience and resources and donated their time to produce a public service announcement campaign in support of LGBT Equality and through it, to applaud the wonderful work that the non-profit Friendfactor has been doing. Friendfactor has effectively harnessed the power of social media in the fight for Equality and was instrumental in helping the LGBT community win the right to marry in New York.
Koko Stambuk directed a beautiful, sexy and artsy piece depicting gay and straight men and women who all feel that love is love no matter what your sexual preference is. The PSA’s theme is that we are all created equal and so we should all be treated equally. "I feel it is very important as an artist to connect with our consciousness, with love behind the creation, never fail to capture the energy in the pictures of the things around us that we forget sometimes, and again, always with Love. always", said director “Koko” Stambuk.
You can view the EQUALITY PSA here: http://trueheartevents.com/prpress.aspx#
Friendfactor is the gay rights organization for straight supporters. Using both social media and innovative public education campaigns, Friendfactor enables everyone to take simple actions for historic results: ending the legal inequalities that people's gay friends face in employment, housing, and marriage.
