Actress, Activist,
Designer Roxana Zal

Sustainable Products key in her latest
venture, the handbag line, One October

She may be best remembered and frequently referenced as the star of television’s 1984 watershed telefilm, “Something About Amelia,” but actress Roxana Zal appeared in two movies that had a significant impact on us.

"Testament," the 1983 feature, is a cautionary tale of the effects of nuclear war. It was done so realistically, and the characters so credible, it was the second scariest movie we’ve ever seen (the most frightening film of all is 1988’s similarly themed “Miracle Mile”). Zal’s performance is heartbreaking.

Equally affecting, but in a wholly different role, was Zal’s turn in 1986’s “River’s Edge.” Zal plays a dispassionate teen in this creepy, memorable film, based on a true story.

These days, Zal’s turned handbag designer and spoke to BeansTalk about her latest project, One October.

Zal chose handbags, because “I love accessories and feel that they can really complete an outfit.”

Between acting roles and filming projects Zal started designing and doing PR for fashion companies. That foray proved an ideal catalyst for her to pursue a long-held dream, to become a designer.

Zal’s business partner (and cousin-in-law), Naomi Stokeld, an attorney, grew up in Santiago, Chile, where Stokeld learned about quality tanning methods and sustainable process of salmon-skin production. After Stokefeld moved to Los Angeles and married Zal’s cousin, the women decided to create One October, with a friend-of-a-friend, Adrienne Weller.

Zal says, “We decided the salmon skin was a perfect medium for the bags.”

Unlike a film project that can take years as it goes from idea to pitch, to multiple drafts to pre-production, production, and more, the process of developing a handbag line was less onerous. “It happened so fast,” Zal explains. “We all joined forces about a year and a half ago, we loved the concept, worked so well together and here we are.”

“The most important element to us was to create items that are timeless but still fashion forward.” The purses retail between $200 to $400. For retail information, visit their site, www.oneoctober.net.

And Zal is committed to this project, “We are looking to just keep growing within our market and to continue to provide the perfect bag for all occasions.”

And for those of us who’ve long admired her acting talents, Zal assures, “Yes, I am still acting, but in this chapter of my life I am much more inspired and focused on designing.

The Malibu, California-native began acting at 12, as a guest star on “Hart to Hart.” For her role as the devastated daughter of a father (Ted Danson) who molests her, Zal was the youngest winner of a prime-time Emmy for her role in the aforementioned “Amelia.” In 1998, she co-produced and starred in the independent film, “Broken Vessels.”

Bynes Runway Ready Even on the Sidelines

Celebrity stylist Ward Stegerhoek for Living Proof No Frizz styled Amanda Bynes with a No Frizz look suitable for the runway. Bynes attended the Jill Stuart show, and wanted a look that was soft and straight with a bit of body.

Ward says he used No Frizz Straight Making Styling Spray. After applying the product completely, Ward started at the roots, gently combing the brush through the hair one section at a time, and aiming the blow-dryer down the hair shafts.

Ward kept the tension of the brush consistent and evenly distributed heat over each section of hair, making the hair straight and beautiful. He used a large round brush to blowout the ends.

Elie Camporo, lead stylist for Frédéric Fekkai, created a neat and minimalistic look for the Alice + Olivia show. Camporo pulled all the hair back into a sleek low bun six inches from the nape of the neck.

“It was important for the look to be smooth but not greasy, so my secret ingredient is the Fekkai Coiff™ Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Crème,” Camporo explained. “Its non-oil base keeps the hair sleek and styled but creates a matte finish.”

Camporo used: Fekkai Coiff™ Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm: A miraculous, non-chemical balm that provides weightless straightening while you blow dry. This creamy balm contains special featherweight silicones for sleek, chic hair that resists frizz and fly-aways. This balm delivers a salon-like blow-out, sans stylist. SRP: $25.00, 3.4 fl. oz. Bottle

Fekkai Coiff™ Magnifique Ultra-Light Finishing Crème: This airy soufflé-like formula floats through layers to add definition and style. Simply “rake” crème through the hair concentrating on the ends to whip hair into its softest, sexiest shape. SRP: $23.00, net wt. 1.7 oz. Jar

Fekkai Sheer Hold Spray: For a manageable, chic, shiny, hold. This breakthrough hair spray formula is the sheerest of its kind and is being celebrated for its fast acting hold that enables stylists to create looks that last. Sheer Hold Hairspray has an ultra-fine mist that sets the style, adding shine without feeling wet or heavy SRP: $23.00, 5.8 fl. oz. Bottle

Stegerhoek says he wanted body but No Frizz, for a funky yet fashionable” style. Stegerhoek used the No Frizz Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Spray to style the hair and then used the No Frizz Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Cream to twist the hair and make it appear rough and stringy.

Stegerhoek used: No Frizz Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Spray: No Frizz molecule with a holding polymer that holds the curl in place. No Frizz Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Spray enhances natural waves and curls with structure and shine. SRP: $24 for each 3.4 oz spray and No Frizz Wave-Shaping, Curl-Defining Styling Cream: The cream formula provides optimum frizz-reduction as well as added conditioning benefits, yet doesn’t leave hair feeling greasy or heavy. Entrepreneurial Chic

Discreet Carrying Cases For Lady Products

We have clear memories of friends in high school slipping tampons up the wrist of their long sleeves before high-tailing it to the bathroom. For that matter, we have those same memories at every office job we’ve ever had.

This always presented problems:

1. For some reason, bringing your entire pocketbook to the bathroom when you weren’t leaving school or the building for the day – simply isn’t done.

2. You risked the humiliation of it slipping out of your sleeve, onto the ground, and then (gasp!!) a boy (or a bullying girl) might see it.

3. What do you do when it’s a warm day and you’re wearing a sundress or a cami or a French-T?

Given that we never wear long sleeves (3/4 is as long as we go), we are a perfect candidate for these very cute new products from Suzanne’s Discreet Chic Accessories. They offer very stylish carrying cases for your lady things (aka: sanitary protection, feminine products).

BeansTalk is also very supportive of women entrepreneurs, a category in which owner/designer Suzanne Gabos fits quite nicely.

Gabos sat down for a intimate interview with BeansTalk to discuss these sweet carrying cases and to give us the dish on how she got started in the business.

BeansTalk: Tell us about your background, leading up to how you came up with the idea for Suzanne’s Discreet Chic Accessories?

Suzanne Gabos: I’d been thinking at length about going back to work after being a stay-at-home mom for 15 years. I yearned to be back in the working environment, utilizing my business skills, acquired from a number of years of experience on Wall Street, without having to work in a structured corporate environment again.

I wanted a career that would be fun and innovative this time around, and that would utilize my creative skills with fashion and style.

I always struggled with the issue of carrying my tampons and other feminine products in a chic and fashionable way, without letting anyone know what I was carrying. Typically, a woman carries her tampons by hand to the restroom or loosely in her purse mixed in with other items.

Also, I found that my tampons and pads were often scattered about in my glove compartment and car console! While these were very convenient places to house my tampons in an emergency, eventually I found that the tampons would become damaged and found that they were dirty.

It was my “ah-ha” moment for myself and I eventually went into this business because I saw a need for it. I identified certain needs that were not being offered in the market place for women’s traditional feminine accessories.

BeansTalk: What kind of products existed already, if any?

Suzanne Gabos: My research of tampon cases or feminine product travel cases disclosed quite a variety of generic travel cases that could be used to hold one or two tampons, but they did not offer secure compartments specifically designed for feminine products.

They were not as functional as I wanted them to be. They didn’t hold anything else such as maxi pads, mini pads for an overnight stay, pre-packaged hygiene wipes, that are very popular these days, or other cosmetic items. I wasn’t able to take these cases out for an entire day without refilling them or for an overnight stay.

Currently, cases on the market resemble tin cans, plastic dental cases and small cloth containers, but nothing that is appealing or attractive that can be carried as a stand- alone accessory or tucked inside of a larger purse on any given day.

I wanted something that I can take out of my purse that was fashionable looking, discreet and chic and would hold everything that I needed to tend to while in the restroom.

BeansTalk: What was your goal regarding the creation and design of the line?

Suzanne Gabos: My goal was very specific in that I wanted to design a chic accessory (or is it a necessity?) that provided a “secured and sanitary environment” for a woman to carry her feminine products, which included tampons, wipes, maxi and mini pads and possibly other small items. I wanted it to be versatile enough so that if they wanted to store cash, or a driver’s license, or lip-gloss inside of it, they are able to do this. You can also carry an additional pair of underwear in the event of an unexpected emergency, which can prevent an embarrassing situation.

What I like most about the products we’ve designed, in addition to being highly functional, is how great they look! Our bags are manufactured with pigskin, snakeskin leathers, crocodile embossed leathers and some fun faux leathers and a range of textures and colors that mirror the current fashion trends.

Entrepreneurial Adventure

BeansTalk: Tell us about your line. How many products are available at this time?

Suzanne Gabos (seen here) : We have four different style bags: the Charisma bag, the Beauty Mark bag, the Parfait bag and the Le Petite bag. We just added the Chi Chi bag for the Spring Collection 2009. The Chi Chi, the Parfait and the Le Petite are the most popular.

We offer several lines in the Fem-Tote™ product – a Junior Collection for the teen and pre-teen (available in glitter, faux snake skins and animal prints), the Luxury Collection (croco embossed leathers), the Denim Collection for a more casual look (also holds pads), and the Bridal Collection, a perfect gift for the female members of the bridal party!

We’re very excited about our Spring 2009 Collection, which features our new Panty Pouch™ product, used as an organizer for panties and other feminine undergarments in a valise or overnight bag, with matching Fem-Totes™ made from PVC fabrics.

BeansTalk: How long did it take you, from idea to production to sales?

Suzanne Gabos: I started in September 2007, while I was enrolled in a design program at the International Academy of Design in Tampa, Florida. It took about six months until I was able to secure people who could assist me in getting this idea off the ground and into production. Once I developed my initial network of designers, graphic artists and marketing consultants in March 2008, everything started to fall into place. So, from idea to production to sales, or my first tradeshow...I would say about a year.

BeansTalk: Where are your products available?

Suzanne Gabos: At www.intimateapparelsolutions.com and in small boutiques throughout the United States, primarily on the east coast. I would love to see the Leather Panty Pouches™ and leather matching Fem-Totes™ in the Specialty Department stores by year-end. Also, I would like to see the lower priced items in the mass merchant channels later this year.

BeansTalk: What are your price points?

Suzanne Gabos: They vary between $35.00 and $45.00 retail in the Junior Fem-Tote™ Collection to $75.00 - $135.00 in the Luxury Fem-Tote™ Collection.

The Bridal Collection, designed to be a luxury item for the bridal party, consists of matching fem-totes and panty pouches retailing between $45.00 and $150.00.

The Spring Collection, which features matching panty pouches with matching fem-totes in PVC, retails between $45.00 and $75.00.

For the younger and more casual crowd, the Denim Collection retails for $45.00. The Dotbella Collection, available this summer and targeting pre-teens, will have a soft body contoured shape and will retail for $20.00.

BeansTalk: What are your future plans, in terms of expanding the line, new developments, etc?

Suzanne Gabos: In terms of expanding the line, there will be a soft contoured bag which will fall under the name “Dotbella," which we branded as a cute way of saying, “beautiful period”. This line was designed for the cost conscious young lady who favors a softer, more casual bag. They will retail for a much lower price, around $20.00, but will still be fun and friendly! These bags will host some funky patterns such as camouflage, skulls, cool prints, and possibly some college logos.

The company also plans to have bags made in plain colors for the ladies who are crazy about monogramming their products! I found this to be a huge craze at the tradeshows!

We are also planning to expand the fabric portfolio for the Panty Pouch™, eventually offering soft designs and smaller bags.

BeansTalk: Have you gifted any celebrities or been in any gift bags, award suites, etc?

Suzanne Gabos: I was so excited that my bags were included in the Official Grammy Gift Bag that was presented at this year’s Grammy Awards and the 2009 Academy Awards Gift Bags. Also, I have gifted to the Buzz Girls Mamma Mia DVD Launch Event, which took place back in December 2008 in Los Angeles.

Dee Dee Ramone DVD Doc Available 10 March 2009

The 2003 documentary "Hey Is Dee Dee Home" plus new bonus short films "History on My Arms" and "Vom In Paris" and a bonus CD.

Description: This is Lech Kowalski's 2003 documentary HEY IS DEE DEE HOME - about the life and times of Ramones bassist and all-star burn out, Dee Dee Ramone (1952-2002) - with new bonus short films History on My Arms and Vom In Paris (each clocking in at just under half an hour) plus a bonus CD. HISTORY ON MY ARMS captures Dee Dee's extraordinary personality in a way that has never been done before. Kowalski was struck by how playful and direct he was with the camera. How he wanted to connect with something inside of himself and expose his true nature. VOM IN PARIS - In Hey Is Dee Dee Home, Dee Dee recounts the now infamous story about what happened between him, Johnny Thunders and Stiv Bators when they got together in Paris in 1989 to form a super punk group. But what really did happen? Kowalski invited Vom Ritchie, currently drummer for Die Toten Hosen, to come to Paris to explain the story as he remembers it. He was the drummer on those sessions and affectionately and vividly differs with what Dee Dee said, but somehow you get the impression that both of them are right. The bonus CD entitled DEE DEE BLUES is a re-mastered collection of guitar recordings Dee Dee made in the early 90's, just for the fun of it with one microphone.

Track Listing/Features:

* History On My Arms
* Hey Is Dee Dee Home
* Vom In Paris
* 26 Street/14 Street /Chelsea Hotel

Bonus Materials:

* Subtitled in Spanish, French and Italian

Press:

“He remains a leading example of that brand of self-destructive romantic revolt pioneered in the 19th century by the French poets Charles Baudelaire and Arthur Rimbaud. As extreme as his behavior and music often were, Mr. Ramone also seemed to be a sympathetic and reasonably self-aware person, at least as he is captured here in a sobered-up, 1991 interview that Mr. Kowalski unearthed and placed at the center of this film. Sitting before a fatalistically black background, wearing an art-fully ripped T-shirt that exposes some of his extensive tattoos, Mr. Ramone tells of his dramatic ups and downs in a calm, clear voice ˜ colored by a Queens accent ˜ that invites immediate credibility. 'I've got my history on my arms,' Mr. Ramone says, looking both at the tattoos that document stages of his life and the collapsed veins that testify to his drug use. The film's title is a line from one of Mr. Ramone's most frequently covered compositions, Chinese Rocks” —Dave Kher, New York Times
