Casey Noble
Design on a Dime, Re-Tooled

Designer Casey Noble brings a fun and fresh design approach to the retooled Design on a Dime beginning Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The series, a long-time viewer favorite, will focus on innovative design solutions for budgets of $2,500 or less. Casey and her team will deliver sophisticated designs that are a true reflection of the homeowners’ personalities and passions. Each week Casey will demonstrate smart design ideas that are affordable and accessible—proving that beautifully designed rooms don’t have to be complicated or expensive.

“We always saw Casey as a promising new design talent when she appeared on season five of HGTV Design Star,” said Kathleen Finch, general manager, HGTV. “When we wanted to re-energize Design on a Dime, we thought of Casey because we loved her creativity and natural on-camera appeal. She is the perfect fit for the series and viewers will love her.”

In the premiere episode, Casey and her design team will take on the lackluster backyard of homeowners Shernice and Thomas Lazare who have a $2,000 budget. The couple loves to throw outdoor parties at their 1920s-style home, but the lack of shade, seating and style prevent them from enjoying the space. Inspired by the couple’s request for a contemporary and colorful design, Casey adds a lively tile mosaic to an existing outdoor fountain and a vibrant pint-sized play area for their young daughter. To help the Lazares beat the heat, Casey includes a pergola that offers shade for the stylishly refurbished patio furniture.

Future episodes will feature a variety of inspirational and inexpensive projects, such as side table made of wooden dowels, a one–of–a kind coral dresser and creative closet doors inspired by a beach bungalow suite.

Hull's Beyond The Lightless Sky LP
Streaming On AOL Music

Announce North American Tour Dates With The F*cking Wrath
Sophomore LP Out Next Week On The End Records

"Beyond The Lightless Sky, doesn't stay in one place for too long; instead, it veers between motorcycle-revving D-beat, bog-trawling doom, sinister black metal, Neurosis drum-offs and hypnotic passages that gnash like a venom-dripping cousin to the final Isis album." -- Village Voice

"While drawing from the thunder of Isis and early Mastodon, the band also creeps in soaring melodies that border on Torche territory." -- Brooklyn Vegan

"Headbanging, growling, deliciously downtuned stoner metal. Hull s three guitar attack achieves maximum sludgery, bashing your skull into the wall with a sledgehammer and smearing your brains across the floor." -- Metalsucks

"Hull are well-educated in the school of metal, proving themselves to be as equally adept at Melvins-derived abstract, skull-crushing sludge as they are at proggy-guitar workouts or spiralling thrash-cum-punk riffs..." -- The Skinny

"Brooklyn-based quintet Hull have been raising eyebrows in the underground metal scene with their engrossing blend of Neurosis-esque post-metal ambience, Mastodon-like downtuned southern groove, intricate progressive structures and psychedelic doom rumblings." -- One Metal

***********************************

Hailing from the streets of Brooklyn, HULL has yet again emerged with a creation to outlive the ages. Hard at work since the release of their debut album, Sole Lord, in 2009, ideas were envisioned and the mighty wind of creativity brought upon this Earth the latest saga, Beyond The Lightless Sky.

Digging further into the past, the Mayan epic takes the listener through a division of two brothers and the struggles that they are faced with. One finds salvation amongst the stars and the wisdom of a stranger, while the other is mesmerized with the bloodthirsty belief of sacrifice and self mutilation. In silence lies a realm that exists outside the plane of fear.

Taking the new songs on the road, HULL embarked on a successful mission to Austin for the SXSW festival to then triumphantly return and join forces with longtime friend and talented engineer/percussionist, Brett Romnes (IATA). Within an enormous, darkened club, many nights fell into morning as the immense sound was captured for the album, then finally putting the recording into the hands of a mixing madman, Billy Anderson. With such experience as The Melvins, Neurosis and Eyehategod, the journey was brutally finished.

Known to behold vast sound expanses, HULL maximizes harmony and tone within one monstrous palate. Upon your brow, focus, as a furious whip of intermingling guitars propel you through the atmosphere as a low pulse resonates through your entire being while the pounding drums blanket all chasms of reality. Find yourself immersed in a musical tide as it is played out before your ears beyond the lightless sky.

Hull is A. Mack, C. Laietta V, S.B. Dunn, J. Stieber, and N. Palmirotto. Also on Beyond The Lightless Sky, Jarboe (vocals), Fade Kainer of Batillus, Jarboe, Inswarm (keys/ambiance), and Joe Merolla (cello). Artwork by Tamara Waite-Santibanez.

Empire of the Sun In L.A.

The electro-psychedelic Empire of the Sun will be in Los Angeles on 16 October 2011 playing Club Nokia.

Empire of the Sun's debut album, Walking On A Dream won seven 7 ARIA Awards including Album of the Year and has been nominated for two Brit Awards for Best International Album and Best International Act.

Empire of the Sun has mastered an exotic, lavish, larger-than-life sound in Walking On A Dream. The music is exhilaratingly contemporary, audaciously forward-looking, yet also curiously archaic all at once. The singles “Walking On A Dream,” “We Are The People,” “Standing On The Shore” and “Without You” showcase the groundbreaking style Empire of the Sun creates with electronic beats, pop melodies and psychedelic overtones. Their live shows are world-renowned and unlike anything you have ever seen before.

Extreme Fixer-Upper
Brothers On HGTV

Property Brothers

A broken-down home with rotten flooring, missing ceilings and exposed wiring would horrify most homebuyers looking for their dream house, but real estate agent Drew Scott and contractor Jonathan Scott instead see a diamond in the rough. In HGTV’s Property Brothers, which begins its second season on Wednesday, October 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT, the dashing twin brothers continue to execute property search-and-rescue missions to help potential homebuyers find, purchase and transform extreme fixer-uppers. Since the show premiered in April 2011, the Scotts have attracted a huge following among younger viewers and the series is one of HGTV’s top-rated programs.

“It's hard to see beyond a dated property's shortcomings and it’s our job to highlight its true potential,” said Drew. “We use state-of-the-art CGI to reveal how the property will look with an entirely new interior.”

In the season premiere, Drew, polished in a perfectly pressed suit, and Jonathan, rugged in his flannel shirt, jeans and work boots, meet clients Scott and Sarah. The couple and their two young children live in a cramped condo and are eager to move to a larger home near their office. To the couple’s excitement, the brothers show them an example of their ideal home, in the perfect location, until the price is revealed as nearly double Scott and Sarah’s budget. Although the couple is doubtful they can find what they’re looking for, Drew and Jonathan show them two rough fixer-uppers that others have bypassed. Despite appearances, both homes have great structure, open floor plans and fantastic locations. In addition, each home is priced well below the couple’s budget, which means they can afford the major makeover to make either house a gorgeous home. After Drew executes the real estate purchase, Jonathan tackles the renovation. In just four weeks, the once-gutted home is now an on-budget beauty that is perfectly tailored to the family’s tastes.

“It’s astonishing how quickly the Scotts have built a fan base,” said Kathleen Finch, general manager, HGTV. “In an ever-changing housing market, people still want to know how to maximize their budget and the Scotts bring a practical—yet unexpected—approach to identifying and creating a dream home. Our audience has fallen in love with them.”

Future episodes of Property Brothers will include more real estate searches and renovation projects that turn run-down properties into stylish new homes. Makeovers will include a Victorian home, a contemporary retreat and a swanky downtown apartment.

The Incredible Dr. Pol

Taking an Old-School, No-Nonsense Approach to Veterinary Medicine,
Dr. Pol Has More than 40 Years in the Field, and Is a Legend in Rural Michigan

Nat Geo WILD’s New Series, The Incredible Dr. Pol
 Premieres Saturday, October 29, 2011, at 9 & 10 PM ET/PT Then Moves to 10 PM ET/PT

“I’m in the business to help farmers make money.  If they go out of business, like so many of these farmers around here, I go out of business.” — Dr. Jan Pol

Sick horse on the verge of death?  A German shepherd with no appetite?  A pig with an abscess?  Not exactly easy tasks to tackle.  But one man has it all under control.  With a “you name it, and we’ll treat it” attitude, this house-call-making veterinarian has seen it all.  A senior with a Dutch accent, working countless hours a day, is not slowing down any time soon.

Meet Dr. Pol, an expert in large farm animals and pets.  This senior is anything but retiring as he takes an old-school, no-nonsense approach to veterinary medicine.  Nat Geo WILD presents The Incredible Dr. Pol, premiering Saturday, October 29, at 9 & 10 p.m. ET/PT then moves to 10 p.m. ET/PT, as he travels across rural Michigan to care for every family pet and head of livestock in need of his expertise and kindness.  Treating numerous patients, including horses, pigs, cows, sheep, alpacas, goats, cats, dogs and even an occasional reindeer, Dr. Pol is not your average vet.

Whether at the clinic or speeding off to an emergency farm call, Dr. Pol’s fast pace and stamina amazes his staff and clients.  In fact, he is a local legend in the community!  His right-hand team includes his wife of 44 years, Diane, who is the office manager handling clients who come in or call the clinic.  Dr. Brenda Grettenberger, Dr. Pol’s long-time colleague, began her career at Pol Veterinary Services 18 years ago.  And Dr. Pol’s son Charles, who helped his father as a child, has extended his stay from LA to help with the challenging workload and farm calls.

Unflappable and unstoppable, Dr. Pol works 14-hour days to help the diminishing population of family farmers survive.  He plays an integral role in keeping local farmers’ livestock healthy and in turn, their businesses profitable.  We’ll ride along with Dr. Pol as he is called on by a farmer to take blood samples of his sheep to check for disease to ensure that he can continue selling the meat for human consumption.  Dr. Pol and Charles will have to wrestle and hold down squirming sheep before they can take the samples.  We’ll also see Dr. Pol treat a cow with a twisted stomach by putting a surgical stitch through the cow’s belly and holding the stomach where it needs to be.

With such a busy practice, we are on call right alongside Dr. Pol as he treats a variety of cases, including two dogs with faces stuck full of porcupine quills, sick horses that may need to be put down and a pig with an abscess that needs to be drained.  We’ll also get a front-row seat as Dr. Pol examines a cow to check for pregnancy by reaching his arm into the rectum and feeling the ovaries.  For local farmers, while many of these animals are their livelihood, others are a part of their extended family.

Premiere Episodes Include:

The Incredible Dr. Pol: Vet and Wild
Premieres Saturday, October 29, at 9 p.m. ET/PT—Special Premiere Time
Dr. Pol receives an emergency call from a client who finds her horse down and fears he may not make it. Suffering from a spinal cord injury, he decides to give the horse a cortisone shot. Will he survive? Dr. Pol’s son, Charles decides to extend his visit to help his father with the work overload. His only request—to palpate a cow. But trouble creeps up when Dr. Pol and Charles perform an emergency futotomy, an intense procedure to extract two dead fetuses from a cow in hopes of saving the mother’s life.  And, the clinic celebrates its 30th anniversary with a special pig roast with old friends, former employees and longtime clients.

The Incredible Dr. Pol: How Now Downed Cow?
Premieres Saturday, October 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
A K-9 Hungarian German Shepard with no appetite? Dr. Pol conducts a series of blood tests to get to the bottom of the real issue.  He wonders if the toxins the dog has been exposed to for police work could have caused cancer.  Then, two elderly horses are extremely sick and in danger of being put down due to intestinal problems and neurological disorder. Will Charles perform his first euthanasia? In another emergency farm call, Dr. Pol must treat a dairy cow with a Left Displaced Abomasum, or a twisted stomach which means that one of the cow’s four stomachs has floated to the top of the abdominal cavity. Dr. Pol will have to perform a procedure to suture that stomach to the wall of the cow’s belly.

The Incredible Dr. Pol: Up Sheep’s Creek
Premieres Saturday, November 5, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
An Australian Sheepdog is brought to the clinic after eating a dead deer carcass.  Since raw deer meat is poisonous to dogs, Dr. Pol gives the dog shots of antibiotics and recommends nothing less than good old Pepto Bismol to line his stomach. Dr. Pol’s next farm call requires him to take blood samples from a flock of sheep in order to test for OPP – Ovine Progressive Pneumonia, a progressive disease that is incurable and highly contagious.  But it’s not as easy as it sounds, Dr. Pol and Charles will have to wrestle the sheep before they can get the samples. Back at the clinic, Dr. Brenda tests a lump in a Doberman’s mammary gland and concludes it is pre-cancerous.  Will she be able to successfully remove it to save the dog’s life?

The Incredible Dr. Pol: Got Your Goat
Premieres Saturday, November 12, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
A Boer goat has lost 50 pounds after refusing to eat.  While examining the goat, Dr. Pol assumes the goat must have some sort of parasite. He confirms it is Coccidia–-a dangerous, one single-cell parasite that infects the intestinal tracts of animals. A French bulldog is brought into the clinic after being hit by a car.  Bloody, in shock and with his eyeball literally hanging out of its socket, Dr. Pol tells the distraught owners to leave the dog overnight so he can x-ray him for internal injuries and surgically remove the eye.  And, Dr. Pol is praised by a local family for treating their English Springer Spaniel who has mange, a contagious skin diseases caused by parasitic mites.

Dr. Pol is produced by SUPER! ALRIGHT! for Nat Geo WILD.  For SUPER! ALRIGHT!, executive producer is Chris Butler.  For Nat Geo WILD, executive producer is Jenny Apostol, and senior vice president of production is Geoff Daniels.

Brad Pitt Dons Sama in Moneyball

From Director Bennett Miller (Capote) comes the much anticipated film, Moneyball starring Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, the Oakland A’s general manager who is rarely caught without a positive attitude, a witty comeback, and a pair of Sama Louis aviators.

Moneyball marks Brad and Sama Eyewear’s first partnership onscreen, but Brad and Sama’s relationship developed many years ago with his personal wardrobe. This relationship proved beneficial when it came to Brad’s new film. Designer and CEO of Sama Eyewear, Sheila Vance, was called upon to design the perfect pair of iconic aviators for Brad Pitt’s character Billy Beane.  Similar to Beane himself, Sheila knew that the key to creating the best product was extensive research.  Collaborating with the props and wardrobe team, Sheila began a three-prong process to create a set of aviators that were both stylish and reflective of Beane’s character.

The first wave involved determining the perfect aviator shape, base, curve and size for Brad’s face, while also incorporating the style of the time.  After testing a series of Sama styles, Sheila and the props and wardrobe team determined a variety of aviator that would be the most suitable and after the first fitting with Brad the Louis aviator was selected. The second wave involved working on the frame colors to find the perfect combination of shades and finishes for the aviators.  The final wave was all about the finishing touches--lens colors, density and non-reflective coating--resulting in a total of nine custom Louis aviator shades that not only translate beautifully on film but also manage to enhance Brad’s already undeniable appeal.

The Louis frames are available for purchase at Destination: Sama boutiques as well as Ilori stores nationwide and retail for $395.00. Various frame and lens colors are available including Brad Pitt’s personal favorite: platinum frames with a custom vintage green lens.

Director Corinne van der Borch and artist Bettina Grossman are available for interviews.

After its world premiere at the 2010 Edinburgh International Film Festival, GIRL WITH BLACK BALLOONS will have its US premiere in New York, where the film was shot about a very New York subject. Director Corinne van der Borch discovers artist Bettina (in her 80’s), who has lived and worked in the Chelsea Hotel since the 60s. As the hotel has literally closed its doors for renovation, GIRL WITH BLACK BALLOONS is an ode to one of New York’s most fascinating citizens and to the city’s adventurous spirit in decades gone by. Director Corinne van der Borch is currently shooting additional footage of Bettina in the almost-deserted hotel – which she hopes to include in the Doc NYC screenings.

GIRL WITH BLACK BALLOONS is a multi-faceted portrait of Bettina – a reclusive, artist living within the confines of Manhattan’s legendary lodgings. Said to be the most beautiful woman to have ever lived in the Chelsea Hotel, Bettina has hidden away in her studio for over forty years. She sleeps on a lawn-chair and surrounds herself with boxes stacked from floor to ceiling, filled with works of her art of which a fraction has been shown only once, in a 1980 exhibition in the OK Harris Gallery, whose owner Ivan Karp launched the careers of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Filmed over two years, Bettina lets down her guard and reveals a treasure trove of her artwork- boxes filled with constructivist-inspired multi media pieces. But it's come at a huge cost.

Dutch filmmaker Corinne van der Borch (Wimbledon, 1977) is based in New York where she graduated from the School of Visual Arts in 2009. She established Wondertime Films in order to create ‘ordinary magic’, by collecting intimate stories and visuals, which can easily go unseen by using her camera as a notebook. Albert Maysles was a mentor during the two-year shoot of GIRL WITH BLACK BALLOONS, with Alan Berliner committed as consulting editor and producer. Corinne’s new documentary project, “The Twin Moms”  – currently in development – was chosen to participate in the highly selective Summer School of the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam earlier this year.

Praise for GIRL WITH BLACK BALLOONS: “You captured her soul.” Academy-award winning director Barbara Kopple. "I can't wait to see the next work from the directors of The Mouth of the Wolf and Girl with Black Balloons, to name just two.” Creative Director Edinburgh Film Festival Hannah Mc Gill (EIFF newsletter August 2010)

After this first edition, the festival will move to a different country every year, with Paris slated to be next year's location.

As festival founder Boris Cherdabayev comments, "It is not a coincidence that we chose New York as a first location of our festival, because it is here that you can see the greatest diversity of cultures living together side by side. In a sense, New York is the world’s biggest melting pot."

DCIFF presents 16 features and documentaries from all over the world, each of them exploring characters, which find themselves dealing with different cultures from their own in various dramatic ways. Many of these are U.S. or New York premieres:
