Dandy Warhols In Your Town...

Dandy Warhols on Tour

The Dandy Warhols have been a band for 18 yrs.

This Machine is the Dandy's 8th official studio album and  was recorded over the course of 2011 at The Dandy Warhols rock clubhouse/ entertainment megaplex/studio The Odditorium. The band recorded the album with their longtime engineer - producer Jeremy Sherrer. Taylor-Taylor describes this record as "stripped down, woody and extremely guitar centric."

The album was mixed Tchad Blake who also mixed The Dandy Warhols Odditorium or Warlords of Mars and Come Down. Tchad is well known for his recent work with The Black Keys, Blitzen Trapper and Pearl Jam. The album cover for This Machine was painted by local Portland, Oregon painter Hickory Mertsching.

Famed Science Fiction writer Richard Morgan penned the band’s official Bio for This Machine. It’s 4 short stories that do a much better job entertaining than this bullet point list. You can download the bio here.

Stand out track,  Autumn Carnival was co authored by Courtney Taylor Taylor and David J of Love and Rockets. About the album, Courtney says, "We've been told that its our gothiest.  I thought it was our grungiest so I'm really hoping its a hit with goths who are...um, really outdoorsy?"

And do check out their various incarnations and side projects.  Blue grass blues to Berlin '77.  Some pretty deep and interesting music.  And stories: Pete International Airport, Immigrant Union, Brush Prairie, One Model Nation.

Post-Crash

New Lynyrd Skynrd

Loud & Proud/Roadrunner Records announced today the release of Last Of A Dying Breed from Lynyrd Skynyrd, the band’s first studio album since the September 29, 2009 release of God & Guns which debuted at #18 on the Billboard Top 20 and gave the band their highest debut since 1977.  Last Of A Dying Breed reunites the band with producer Bob Marlette who produced God & Guns.

“It was great to get back in the studio with Bob for this new album,” said Gary Rossington “we kind of went back old school this time.   All of us playing together in the studio as a band, tracking songs and creating licks.  We had a lot of fun and the music really flowed for us, so that’s when you know you are on to something good.  We can’t wait to let the fans hear these songs and play ‘em live.”

Led by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), along with longtime drummer Michael Cartellone, Lynyrd Skynyrd have recorded an album that continues the tremendous legacy that began over 35 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida, a legacy that was halted for a decade after the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson and Huey Thomasson, yet they rock on.

Joining Lynyrd Skynyrd will be bass player Johnny Colt, an original member of the Black Crowes who has also played with Train and Rockstar Supernova.  When asked about receiving a phone call from Rickey Medlocke on behalf of Lynyrd Skynyrd to join the band, Johnny said, “What else do you say to Medlocke, Rossington and Van Zant? We’re talking southern rock royalty.  We’re talking Lynyrd Skynyrd. The only thing out of my mouth was when and where!”

With a catalog of over 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

Lynyrd Skynyrd will be on tour throughout the summer in North America and Europe.  View a complete list of dates here.

Real Mountain Men

Mountain Men: Get Rugged

New History series premieres Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 10 p.m. ET

For more than 25 years, Eustace Conway has lived off the land deep in Daniel Boone country at the western edge of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. In this unspoiled wilderness, dangers like mudslides, falling trees, ravaging weather and hungry bears are a fact of life. He does his own lumbering, tanning, and blacksmithing, subsisting solely on what he can grow, fish or hunt.

Getting back to nature…going off the grid…searching for a more truthful existence…however you describe it, the “simple life” is not so simple. A new 8-part series, MOUNTAIN MEN, follows Eustace and others who have chosen the wilderness life as they race against time to obtain the food and supplies they’ll need to make it through the brutal winter months ahead. MOUNTAIN MEN premieres Thursday, May 31 at 10pm ET on HISTORY.

Ancient survival skills can mean the difference between life and death in the wild. It takes a whole year for Tom Oar to prepare for the seven-month-long winters on the Yaak River in Montana, about 100 miles from the nearest town. He needs to chop some 700 square feet of wood to heat his home and find enough food to last the long, unrelenting winter. All the while, he must keep a vigilant eye out for aggressive grizzlies, mountain lions, and wolves.

Meanwhile, up in the northern range of Alaska, Marty Meierotto is piloting his bush plane in search of animal pelts to make a living. But staying alive is a full-time job. As the days grow shorter and shorter, he must cut and gather enough wood to survive, in complete isolation, an Arctic winter that can reach 60 degrees below zero. He’ll live off mountain sheep and caribou – if the wolves and bears don’t get him first.

True American originals, these Mountain Men are the last of their kind, and the clock is ticking. They are:

Eustace Conway – When he was 16, Eustace attended a Native American ceremony where the spirits led him to live off the land as man was intended. He bought a tract of land in the Blue Ridge Mountains, built his own shelter, and eventually purchased (by selling firewood and giving paid lectures) a 1000-square mile tract he calls Turtle Island Preserve. Interns come to Eustace to learn the old ways of living with nature in a self-sustaining society. They include Justin, a tough city boy who can be hard to handle and doesn’t like taking orders; Chloe, a college student who hopes to someday help Eustace take Turtle Island Preserve to the next level; and Jessie, who is willing to work hard but struggles to adjust to the harsher side of outdoor living.

Marty Meierotto – At age eight, Marty’s dad took him fur trapping for the first time. From that moment he knew he’d be trapping the rest of his life. At 25, with ten bucks in his pocket, he lit out for Alaska and is now known as one of the top trappers in the territory. He lives in a cabin 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle with his wife Dominique, and their daughter Noah. Working the trap line means leaving his family for weeks at a time to live in his primitive one-room log cabin 200 miles from civilization. In bone-chilling isolation just a stone’s throw from the Yukon Territories, he relies on his wits to survive nature’s deadliest obstacles. It’s heart-breaking to be away from his family. Still, his inner spirit is calling him to the wild, and he has to listen.

Tom Oar – Tom was a bronco rider on the rodeo circuit for 28 years. When the work started to take a toll on his body, the long-time trapper taught himself tanning to support himself and the love of his life, Nancy. They’ve been a team for more than 40 years. Nancy worries about Tom working the trap lines every day; wolves are becoming a big problem, and he’s not a young man anymore. She is concerned that if his health or hers should fail, they’ll be forced to give up the life they love and move to Florida with his kids. Their neighbor Will is a close friend of Tom’s from their rodeo days. He looks up to Tom, who taught him how to live the mountain man life. Now that Tom and Nancy are getting older, he helps them out from time to time.

MOUNTAIN MEN is produced for HISTORY by Warm Springs Productions.  Russ McCarroll is Executive Producer for HISTORY. Executive Producers for Warm Springs are Marc Pierce and Chris Richardson.

Kiss Me

A Decade Later...
Sixpence None the Richer Are Back

The Nashville-based Grammy-nominated band Sixpence None The Richer had a platinum-selling 1998 breakout single “Kiss Me," which was the anthem of teens who were fans of "She's All That," "Dawson's Creek," "The Gilmore Girls," among others.

After a long recording hiatus, the band will return on August 7, 2012 with ‘Lost In Transition,’ its first studio album in a decade.

The title is a reference to the band’s 2004 breakup. “It’s about things that happened in our lives recently, personal events or on a musical level,” explains Matt Slocum, who founded the band with singer Leigh Nash in 1992. “We had a transition to go through. And now we have."

‘Lost In Transition’ was produced by Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty, Dixie Chicks) at PLYRZ Studios in Los Angeles and was recorded live with minimal overdubbing. Unlike previous Sixpence albums, ‘Transition’ is centered on a stripped-down approach to music. It is a gorgeous mix of infectious hooks, piano, acoustic guitars, a bit of country and a newfound and beautiful simplicity to the songs.

Stream the new single “Radio” on Perez Hilton:
http://bit.ly/LbTbXB

Nash and Slocum also shared the songwriting duties on the album and describe the process as an unspoken dialogue. “It was like we were writing songs to each other about what was happening in our lives,” said Nash. The result is some of the most candid and dark material on any of the band’s records. Examples include “Sooner Or Later,” a song Nash wrote with her husband about the death of her father, and “Failure,” which is a song about “the dread and underlying fear of something bad happening,” Slocum explains.
