New PBS Series and more

Slavery And The Making Of America, a new series, airs Wednesdays, February 9-16, 2005, 9 to 11 p.m. ET on PBS. This groundbreaking series chronicles the institution of American slavery from its origins in 1619 - when English settlers in Virginia purchased 20 Africans from Dutch traders - through the arrival of the first 11 slaves in the northern colonies (in Dutch New Amsterdam), the American Revolution, the Civil War, the adoption of the 13th Amendment and Reconstruction. With such unprecedented breadth come entirely new perspectives on and facts about slavery. These new perspectives challenge many long-held notions (such as the idea that slavery was strictly a southern institution; it was, in fact, a national institution) and highlight the contradictions of a country that was founded on the principle of “liberty and justice for all,” but embraced slavery. Morgan Freeman narrates.

Surf Divas

Twin sisters Izzy and Coco Tihanyi opened Surf Diva, the world’s first surf school for women and girls in 1996, and launched a successful clothing line, surfboard brand, and surf boutique in La Jolla, California (surfdiva.com). They were the official surfing school for the “Blue Crush” movie and have run surf camps for the likes of OP, Vans, Spy, O’Neill, Billabong, and Roxy. Surf Diva has doubled sales annually for the past several years. Staff size has grown from three in 1996, to fifty-five instructors in 2004. “We have outgrown all of the surf schools catering to men,” said Izzy Tihanyi, in an MTV interview this September.

Surf entrepreneurs Izzy and Coco Tihanyi have written a new book: Surf Diva: A Girl’s Guide To Getting Good Waves (A Harvest Original, Harcourt
February 7, 2005; $14) geared towards both women and girls who want to learn more about the world’s fastest growing sport.

The Facts: Between 1999 and 2001, the number of women reported to surf daily, rose 120%. And, it’s just continuing to grow. As of the latest survey, the number has grown an additional 160%. (From Board-Trac, the action sports industry’s leading marketing research firm.) According to SIMA (Surf Industry Manufacturers Association), women’s surf apparel is by far the fastest growing segment in the surf industry. Quiksilver saw sales of its Roxy women’s surf apparel line jump by a staggering 40% last year. Moreover, big brands are acknowledging surfing as a growing sport, for both men and women. Majors such as Billabong, Rip Curl, Pac/Sun, O’Neill, Body Glove, Roxy/Quiksilver, Vans, etc. are increasing their monetary support of major women’s surfing competitions, attracting worldwide attention.
Orly, the well-known beauty brand, is coming out with a new nail color honoring surfing, and the ad campaign will feature surfboards from SURF DIVA.

Surfing is also taking
Hollywood by storm with major celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Nick Lachey, and Minnie Driver, to name but a few, taking the plunge. Every day, expert surfers like Layne Beachley, Sofia Mulanovich, Lisa Anderson, Rochelle Ballard and Kate Skarratt are competing like the big boys, and succeeding.

What's Goth is Good Again

Mark Ryden's Triptych (see story below)

Getting Goth ... Again

Sure, you may have hopped into a Hot Topic or a Torrid, smiled at the massive marketing blitz for "Nightmare Before Christmas," or exercised restraint at the teens who remind you of your own youth. Goth is back in a big way. And believe it or not, it was no more in abudance than at last Fall's NY Fashion Week. With the December 17, 2004 release of "Lemony Snicket," it'll probably continue to stay hot until it gets, literally too hot to wear long-sleeved black garb.

From Style.com

STYLE NOTES: The New Goth

Mark Ryden
With a Pat the Bunny-meets-Seed of Chucky aesthetic, Mark Ryden's work has a hypnotic appeal that is as appalling as it is accomplished. (Marilyn Manson is a collector, natch.) For those in search of haunted celebrations, holiday or otherwise, Ryden's paintings are featured in two exhibitions: Frye Art Museum, Seattle, through February 12, 2005; Pasadena Museum of California Art, Pasadena, CA, February 26 to May 8, 2005.

Limited edition Blood CD in triptych package, by Stan (Wall of Voodoo) Ridgway and Mark Ryden, $33, available at www.goreydetails.com and (503) 256-3122.

A Carnivale Like No Other

The final battle between Good and Evil is looming, and Ben Hawkins and Brother Justin are on a collision course that could determine the fate of the world, when HBO's Emmy-winning drama series Carnivale returns January. The 12-episode second season begins Sunday, January 9, 2005 at 9 p.m., with the episode entitled "Los Moscos," followed by other shows on subsequent Sundays at the same time.

1934. The Dust Bowl. The last great age of magic. In a time of titanic sandstorms, drought and pestilence - all signs of God's fury and harbingers of the Apocalypse - the final conflict between good and evil is about to begin. The battle will take place in the Heartland of an empire called America. And when it is over, man will forever trade away wonder for reason.

Unusual, disturbing, visually stunning, this is a series to be savored (in BeansTalk's opinion).

Available in an array of colors and patterns, Aerosmith frontman, Steve Tyler, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, Joan Jett, Tommy Lee, Melissa Etheridge and Ozzy Osbourne are among the recording artists who sport the “LOOK.” Madonna requested that Wright fashion a set in gold for her and daughter Lourdes. Modern Alchemy

Today BeansTalk met with Douglas Little of D.L. & Co. (“Modern Alchemists and Purveyors of Curious Goods”) at Fred Segal Studio. We were preoccupied with the fact that he greatly resembled a character from a film we liked quite a bit, “From Hell,” which starred Johnny Depp as an Absinthe-addicted policeman trying to unravel the mystery of Jack the Ripper. He also reminded us a lot of actor Patrick Bristow (you may note that he doesn’t look like Bristow at all in the photos included here, but he did to us in person).

Little is a fascinating character, a former beauty product designer turned perfumier, candle maker, lifestyle arbiter. He is, if you must know a fine fragrancer, graphic designer, installation artist, interior designer, illustrator, sculptor. But what he was presenting today were his luxury candles and completely custom fragrances. He started, only a year ago, with a run of 2,500 luxury candles, packaged in a round, miniature silk-encased hat-box. The fabric is hand-dyed Burmese silk and tied with a fat, black silk ribbon. The candle vessel, sculpted by Little based on an actual antique vessel he discovered, is scalloped glass.

Amid the Juicy Couture crowd at Fred Segal, Little is wholly an anachronism, dressed authentically as a Victorian gentleman — cravat, vest, tailored coat, shoes and spats. Where some of his Victorian/Edwardian contemporaries wore pins fashioned from human hair of a deceased loved one, Little wears a shiny oval lapel pin, a daguerreotype of a fellow with a curling mustache.

He introduces two popular, limited-edition candles: “Angel’s Trumpet” in a white frosted glass version of the scalloped bowl, and “Absinthe” (based on the wormwood plant). The smell is intoxicating, and unique in every way.

Also on display, in this travelling antique apothecary, are “Web Plates,” a spider web sandwiched between glass plates, mounted them in vintage frames, taxidermied pheasants, peacocks with glittery brooches attached. Little has plans for home fragrances, home decorations and more, to be slowly introduced (afterall, the entire business is fashioned together merely by himself and a single assistant). He’s on the web at www.dlcompany.com

Douglas Little.

Cleanse for the New Year

Detox – But In A Good Way: If you're in NYC or will be, aren't squimish and open to trying new things, this might be for you: For an instant energy booster, weight loss jump-starter and internal clutter cleanser, New York's Sea Change Healing Center (which offers every imaginable spa and health treatment and looks dreamy) offers a Detox Program, monitored by a naturopathic physician, the three-week supervised detoxification program doesn't leave you starving for food, says a company rep. It’s designed to give the body a periodic rest from chemicals and toxins in the environment, say reps, who provided the following information. The program can be completed individually or in a group environment where participants are guided and encouraged effortlessly through the process of eliminating foods that detract from optimum health.

The Sea Change Detox Program is a three-week nutritional cleanse supervised by one of Sea Change’s Naturopathic Physicians. Participants are kept to a strict hypoallergenic diet that includes organic fruits, vegetables and grains, and is supplemented with nutritional vitamins, powders and shakes.

The program includes an initial individual meeting with the Naturopathic Physician to assess general health and individual goals, as well as three group sessions, including a breath class involving Somato Respiratory Integration, discussions on adjunct programs to enhance the detoxification process, tools for re-entry into healthier eating and wellness, and a final individual one-on-one visit with the Naturopath upon completion.

Sea Change offers Wellness Lifestyle Coaching as continuing support to this program. All materials, supplements and products are included in the program. Detoxification especially helps when we are feeling ill, stressed or simply want to jump-start the body into a healthier way of life.

Detoxification is also a good choice when experiencing symptoms of any health issues including: food intolerances, fatigue, frequent infections, digestive problems, joint and muscle pain, skin rashes, cellulite, decreased mental acuity or just a general feeling of disconnect. When the body is running at optimum capacity, toxins are neutralized by the liver and eliminated through the breath, skin, bowels and urination. When we push our bodies to meet the needs of busy lifestyles, however, these detoxification systems often become compromised and do not function properly.

Detoxification gives all the organs a rest, allowing the body the ability to heal and rebuild its immune system, and provides a better defense in fighting off illness and the effects of degenerative diseases so common in our chemically polluted environment.

A person can extend life by several years with regular detoxification. You heal faster, give your organs a rest, clean your liver and kidneys, purify your blood, cleanse your colon, lose unnecessary weight, rid toxin buildups in the tissues, eliminate cellulite, clear the eyes and tongue, cleanse the breath, and lose excess water.

Proper diet and supplements, exercise, and regular detoxification will more than double your energy and keep you well and happy. Sea Change suggests participants complete a supervised detox seasonally (four times a year) to keep the bodymind in optimum health. Participants can begin a detox program at any time. Group programs are seasonal, with the next to begin in April. Another will begin in September.

The three-week individual or group program, including supplements and details specified above, costs $495. The Sea Change Healing Center is a mind/body wellness center located at 31 West 26th St., 2nd floor, New York, New York, 10010.
