Please note: Today’s newsletter is brief -- BeansTalk is going out of town, but will be posting Monday, August 23, 2004.

What Everyone’s Wearing: Even Neiman Marcus is pushing their ponchos, which can be found everywhere, including department stores and “mall” shops. Given the trendy and distinctive nature of the garb, it’s probably best to not dole out tons of coin for one. We especially like the caplet ones.

We LOVE these: http://www.soyscentscandles.com/ -- they’re really truly the best of the wonderful soy candles. More on this later.

Todd Tour Dates: Josh Todd has added more tour dates to their on-going U.S. trek in support of their “You Made Me” album, which is out now through a partnership between TODD Entertainment, LLC. and XSRecords. They’ll play several shows with Tesla, a show with Orgy, and make an appearance at the 3rd annual “Locobazooka” festival in Fitchburg, MA on September 26, 2004.

They’ve done more than six month’s worth of shows, including ones at this year’s X Games and Japan’s “The Rock Odyssey” festival along with Aerosmith and The Who. More dates are frequently being added. Hit Parader recently described Todd as “…one lean, mean rockin’ machine…this is a band that celebrates the inherent glory of rock and roll with every note they play and every word they say.” www.joshtodd.com is the band’s website, which features photos, video and sound clips.

From Planned Parenthood: EASY ACCESS TO BIRTH CONTROL IN DANGER Urgent Action Need NOW

As a safety net provider, PPAC (Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California) is sponsoring Assembly Bill 2151 authored by Assemblymember Hannah-Beth Jackson, which will maintain current Medi-Cal reimbursements for birth control and condoms.

Currently, PP is able to provide patients with birth control pills for little or no cost at the time of service. If AB 2151 is not passed by the state legislature, PP Los Angeles will face a loss of 2.5 million dollars--a loss this large would force us to reduce or eliminate some of the health programs we currently offer. Send a fax to your State Senator to ensure that PP and other safety-net providers are not forced to cut vital services that our communities depend on.
Urge your State Senator to vote “AYE” on AB 2151

Soap Starters: Russell Crowe, Alec Baldwin, Marisa Tomei, Kevin Bacon, Viggo Mortenson, Mischa Barton… all started on soaps.

On September 6, 2004 at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET/PT, SOAPnet presents the third installment of its original one-hour special, “They Started on Soaps,” featuring actors who started in daytime and then made it big in primetime and movies. Experts, including casting directors and journalists, discuss such actors as Kristin Davis, Kevin Bacon, Lori Laughlin, Kyra Sedgwick and Marisa Tomei and what makes daytime the perfect breeding ground for the hottest faces in the business.

Who’s Wearing What: Erika Christensen stepped out at last night's premiere of the new comedy Without A Paddle in a floral dress by Elsie Katz Couture. She walked carpet in a cream, pink and yellow floral chiffon dress with sweetheart neckline, rusching down the front and a full 1950's style skirt.

Elsie Katz Couture, designed by Donna Baxter, features vintage-inspired feminine and whimsical designs. Baxter named the collection after her grandmother, Elsie Katz, who believed in pink marabou boas and sparkly tiaras for everyday. The Elsie Katz Couture collection has recently been seen on Sharon Stone, Famke Janssen and Paris Hilton.

Hot for Fall: Brooches, fur, metallic shoes, gloves and tweed handbags are, according to Neiman Marcus, the must-have items for fall.

Coach Exec on Trends: Reed Krakoff, President and Executive Creative Director of Coach, discusses the new season's trends: Refined, highly sophisticated clothes with an emphasis on dramatic color combinations, exotic prints, and elegant silhouettes dominated the New York runways for fall. The looks felt more polished than in the past, and most of the season's trends are reflected in our new collections of fall bags and accessories. Here are a few of the key trends

Sport Looks
Many of the designers showed vibrantly patterned sportswear pieces that were mixed together to create a fun, active look. Clothes like these are great accented by our sporty Optic Signature Demis and Hobos in shades like Bordeaux, Black or Fatigue. These bags are subtle but modern enough to get attention.

Black & White Drama
The head-to-toe black and white looks for this season are a big story for both night and day. This trend goes great with our bold new collection of zebra print accessories or our solid black or white Soho Hobos and Soho Leather Totes.

Latest Steps
The news in shoes was all about originality. Two of our favorite styles this season are the Tabitha - an updated Mary Jane featuring our Signature fabric with brass rivets, and the Darrie - a chic sandal made of sleek, contrasting patent and metallic leathers.

Something Fishy: BERLIN (Reuters) - Environment activists piled thousands of dead fish at the foot of Berlin's biggest tourist attraction, the Br andenburg Gate, Tuesday in a demonstration against over-fishing and pollution in the North Sea.

"It's not the fish but the politics that really stink," said Bjoern Jettka, press officer for Germany's Greenpeace.

On a hot August day at peak tourist season, visitors to the famous neo-classical landmark were greeted by the smell of 11,000 rotting fish displayed on a 100 meter long table under banners bearing the slogan "Don't waste life!."

"We caught the fish in the North Sea on board the Greenpeace ship Esperanza using a standard 10 meter commercial fishing net, said Jettka. "The net has a huge pipe attached that sucks up fish indiscriminately like a giant vacuum cleaner."

The dead fish on display -- some 95 percent of the catch, including endangered species of octopus and sea urchin -- were those that commercial crews would normally throw back overboard for failing to meet traders' criteria.

"Some 700,000 tons of dead fish are thrown back into the sea each year -- this waste problem will affect future generations if no one takes action," said Greenpeace marine biologist Thomas Henningsen.

"Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder must hear our protest."

Demonstrators hoped the prominent site, flanked by luxury hotels and foreign embassies, would attract attention and urge Schroeder to pressure the European Union (news - web sites) to reduce over-fishing and pollution in the North Sea.

Prive Oxygenates: Laurent Dufourg, owner and creator of Privé Salon and Privé Formule Aux Herbes haircare products has styled some of the world’s most celebrated men and women for over 15 years. His salons in New York and Los Angeles, with a third location to be unveiled at the new W Hotel in Seoul Korea, offer the latest techniques in color, cutting, styling and haircare. The latest, Oxygenating Scalp and Hair Treatment, was created exclusively by Privé Salon.

Oxygenating the follicle of the hair enhances cell metabolism and regeneration, therefore strengthening the entire hair shaft to promote growth, reports DuFourg. Oxygen is also an anti-bacterial agent, ridding the scalp of any product or environmental residues that block natural cell rejuvenation. All hair types (and skin types) benefit from oxygen, which moisturizes and restores dry and chemically treated hair and normalizes oily hair.

This newest deep penetrating treatment, created by Brigitte Beasse of Privé Los Angeles, begins with a scalp massage, utilizing personalized essential oil blends created for each individual client, specific to his or her hair type and special needs. This first step of the treatment enhances blood circulation, thus preparing the scalp to receive and absorb the oxygen.

Oxygen is then administered to the scalp with a special machine, the Alchemy Oxygen Fountain, which generates 97% pure oxygen from a hand held spray devise, offering more precision in treating problem areas of the scalp. Privé Formule Aux Herbes Intensive Mask is then applied, followed by a second scalp massage and lymphatic drainage of the neck and nape areas, to initiate an internal cleanse that eliminates toxins. The process is complete with Privé Formule Aux Herbes Reparative Shampoo and Conditioner. This 45 minute treatment leaves the hair and scalp nourished and strengthened, resulting in luxurious shine, volume and texture. The entire process combines Privé Formule Aux Herbes Reparative Shampoo and Conditioner, Privé Formule Aux Herbes Intensive Mask, Essential Oils and OXYGEN.* Price is $70, not including blow out. Cost of blowouts begin at $50 depending on the length of the hair.

Laurent D’s clients include: Sharon Stone, Uma Thurman, Tea Leoni, Audrey Tautou, Gwyneth Paltrow, Diane Lane, David Duchovny, Jewel, and Adrian Brody to name a few. For more information about the Privé Formule Aux Herbes collection, please call 866-351-1193.
