Oscar Nominee Chooses 7 for all Mankind

Oscar-nominee Amy Adams, seen here, left, on 22 May 2006, wears jeans on the NYC film set of “7 for all MankindEnchanted.” Adams (seen right at January’s Film Critics Awards), one of seven children, was born in Italy (dad was in the military), but raised in Colorado. TCM Gets Edgy

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) is moving forward with several programming initiatives geared to attract a broader viewer base, including a new cult film showcase hosted by auteur filmmaker and legendary rocker Rob Zombie (House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects --seen right); two pilots, one featuring Wilmer Valderrama (That ‘70s Show, Fast Food Nation, seen left), that could lead to TCM’s first-ever original series; and an exploration of the creative spirit and maverick determination of independent filmmakers in TCM’s first in-house documentary production.

“These programming initiatives allow us to cultivate a new generation of classic movie fans, helping us take viewers from novice to true fan through innovative approaches,” said Tom Karsch, executive vice president and general manager for TCM. “Whether it is

Rob Zombie introducing cult classics or a young Hollywood star recreating iconic movie scenes, this entertaining content is certain to broaden TCM’s appeal beyond our loyal core audience.”

TCM Underground hosted by Rob Zombie– TCM Film Showcase premiering in October

TCM unveils a new late-night showcase featuring auteur filmmaker and music artist Rob Zombie as the host. Zombie will feature such cult and underground movies as Suzuki Seijun’s stylish Yakuza flick Tokyo Drifter, horror master George Romero’s The Crazies, Ed Wood’s Bride of the Monster, Francis Coppola’s creepy Dementia 13 and Leonard Castle’s offbeat The Honeymoon Killers.

Zombie has made a name for himself challenging audiences by stretching the boundaries of film, music and publishing. He recently took film to a new level with his critically acclaimed House of 1000 Corpses and its high-octane follow-up The Devil’s Rejects, and he is now working on his next film project, the animated horror film The Haunted World of Superbeasto, starring Academy Awardâ nominee Paul Giamatti, slated for release later this year.

As the longest active artist on Geffen Records and the most prolific Geffen artist when it comes to Gold and Platinum discs, Zombie has sold in excess of fifteen million records worldwide. This past March, his new album Educated Horses entered the billboard charts at #5. Zombie is also a seasoned video director, with more than 25 videos to his credit. In 1995, he won an MTV Music Video Award for “More Human Than Human,” becoming the first self-directed artist to win such an award.

TAKE TWO (working title) – Original series pilot

This unique concept will give a young star the opportunity to act out (or completely re-imagine) an iconic scene from a classic Hollywood movie. The pilot for the series will feature Wilmer Valderrama re-creating a scene from The Lost Weekend. TAKE TWO comes to TCM from World of Wonders, with Fenton Bailey & Randy Barbato (Movies that Shook the World) serving as executive producers.

IDOLS (working title) – Original series in development

In IDOLS, a younger star working in film today has an opportunity to shadow and interview his/her classic film idol. It comes to TCM from executive producer Robert Trachtenberg (Cary Grant: A Class Apart, The Dick Cavett Show with Special Guest Mel Brooks).

EDGE OF OUTSIDE– Original TCM Documentary premiering in July

In its first-ever completely in-house documentary production, TCM explores the uncompromising vision, creative spirit and maverick determination of independent filmmakers, both classic and current. A tribute to the fight for artistic freedom in American independent cinema, EDGE OF OUTSIDE features interviews with Ed Burns, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, Henry Jaglom, Arthur Penn, Peter Falk, Gena Rowlands and John Sayles, as well as friends and crew members who worked with such cutting-edge filmmakers as Sam Fuller, John Cassavetes and Sam Peckinpah. In a year that saw independent movies take center stage at the Oscarsâ, this documentary offers an intimate look at the various issues and struggles independent filmmakers face – creative and personal, financial and emotional. It dispels the notion that an independent film is simply a low-budget film, instead defining the genre by the maverick filmmaker’s ability to infuse his or her films with creative spirit and determination.

On the fifth season of American Idol, Taylor Hicks was crowned the winner during the live two-hour season finale on Fox. Hicks, 29, from Birmingham, AL, emerged as America's choice in a competition that began with tens of thousands of hopefuls who auditioned in San Francisco, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Greensboro, Las Vegas and Denver. Over the course of the season, viewers cast approximately 580 million votes in support of their favorite contestants.

Superstar singer/songwriter Prince made a surprise appearance on tonight’s grand finale, performing two songs from his new album “3121” – “Lolita” and “Satisfied.” The show also featured the Top 12 American Idol contestants performing with guest artists Clay Aiken, Burt Bacharach, Mary J. Blige, Toni Braxton, Al Jarreau, Live, Meat Loaf and Dionne Warwick. Last season’s winner, Carrie Underwood, took the stage for the last time as the reigning American Idol, performing “Don’t Forget to Remember Me.” Among their multiple performances, McPhee sang “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” with legendary singer Meat Loaf, and Hicks was joined by Toni Braxton on “In the Ghetto.”

Hicks is the fifth American Idol to be crowned, joining Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia and Carrie Underwood as winners of the coveted title, a major recording contract and a management contract.

Tuesday night's final performance show had the audience on its feet, as Hicks and co-finalist Katharine McPhee each performed three songs. Hicks sang “Do I Make You Proud,” written by Absolute and Tracy Ackerman, while McPhee sang “My Destiny,” written by Harry Sommerdahl, Hanne Sorvag and Tim Baxter. In addition, Hicks sang "Living for the City” and "Levon” and McPhee sang "Over the Rainbow" and "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree." The night was topped off by Daniel Powter’s special performance of his hit single “Bad Day.”

Tuesday’s square-off featuring Hicks and McPhee marked American Idol 's highest-rated final performance show ever among Adults 18-49 and Total Viewers. As the talent competition wound down tonight, IDOL concluded a tremendous season – gaining 2% in Adults 18-49 and 12% in Total Viewers versus the same telecasts last year, and gaining +9% in Adults 18-49 and +14% in Total Viewers versus the same weeks last season.

Penn Jillette Welcomes Zolten

LAS VEGAS (AP) - After naming their first-born girl Moxie CrimeFighter last June, comedian Penn Jillette and wife, Emily, came up with something a bit more mainstream for their new son - Zolten Penn, who was born Monday.

"Zolten is a common Hungarian name, it's my wife's maiden name and most importantly, it's the name of Dracula's dog," said Jillette, the 51-year-old larger half of the comedy and magic duo Penn & Teller, in a statement.

Jillette left in the middle of his daily radio show on the CBS/Free FM network to be with his wife, who is 40, in a Las Vegas hospital Monday afternoon, publicist Glenn Alai said. On-air sidekick Michael Goudeau took over the show.

Zolten Penn Jillette weighed 8 pounds, 13 ounces.

Penn & Teller perform nightly at the Rio hotel-casino in Las Vegas and star in their own television show in its fourth season on Showtime.

MTV Movie Awards

Hippies in Heaven

Yay! California friends, Harvard grad BJ Averell, 26, an on-line tutor, and Stanford grad Tyler MacNiven, 25, a filmmaker, narrowly beat Jeremy Ryan and Eric Sanchez, in the $1 million US race around the world on CBS’ “Amazing Race.” Between the two of them, they speak 36 languages. The race, which covered 60,000 miles, actually ended five months ago. The winners had to keep their big win ($1 million) a secret from everyone, including their families.

"I think that on this race, being cerebral or being intelligent doesn't help as much being in the moment and being aware of what's happening around you, and it's just great to stay positive and just really enjoy each other's company, and our friendship is what got us through it," Averell said.

Third placers Ray and Yolanda had news, too.

Ray shocked Yolanda by proposing, live, on his knees, in the plaza on GMA Thursday.

"I think the race was, I mean, it was a once in a lifetime experience," Ray said, "and I mean, you got to hang out with hippies and frat boys but, most of all, sharing the race with Yolanda. It was something that was special. I would have not been here if it wasn't for you and you're like everything I've dreamed of my whole life. Will you marry me?"

With onlookers cheering wildly, she said yes, tears streaming down her face.

Everybody then had cake and toasted the thrilled couple.

Science teacher Yolanda Brown-Moore, 27, and attorney Ray Whitty, 31, both of Chicago, were dating when "Race" was taped.

It's not often when we actually cheer and clap at the television, but we sure did when BJ and Tyler won.

Note: Throughout the exciting race, we speculated on Eric's and Jeremy's supposed "girl crazy" ways. It often rang false -- and seemed inorganic when they'd constantly be making comments about "the ladies." In reality, they really did seem more like what Ray dubbed them "the Frat girls." They just seemed to us to be more of a couple than, say, Ray and Yolanda, even. So, when the final challenge happened and an excited Jeremy kept calling Eric "baby" in an unselfconscious affectionate way, that seemed to reveal more about their true relationship than their supposed "lady"-killer reputation. So come on guys, come out! No one will like you any less if you just do it. We're not being haters. Just don't be fakers.

Aniston’s, Knightley's Oscar Necklace on Display

Jennifer Aniston’s rare Platinum and diamond necklace by Bulgari that she wore to this year’s Oscars will be exhibited in boutiques around the world. She's seen in the photo left, in her Rochas gown from the 2006 Oscars.

The necklace dates back to the 1930s and is usually housed in Rome's Via Condotti.

The Bulgari boutique in Chicago is the latest destination for the vintage Platinum necklace, which will appear among other items.

A Bulgari collar worn by Keira Knightley at the Oscars (seen in above right, in her custom Vera Wang gown carrying a Robert Vivier clutch) will also be part of the display. It was originally made for the shah of Iran.

Platinum is the metal of choice for A-listers around the world, with a prominent Indian actress also choosing a platinum item as a gift to a temple.

Last night's America's Next Top Model seemed to rush through the one-hour finale. After weeks of single contestant eliminations, this week saw the FINAL (and much-awaited) demise of pompous , deluded Jade within the first half-hour (after the final three, Danielle, Jade and Joanie shot a Cover Girl commercial), they rushed to Thailand-set finale. This was our first experience watching the show (even though we'd once interviewed one a previous winner, Eva Pigford, for a magazine).

The final contest was a walk on a long, beautiful, elaborate runway and Joanie and Danielle pranced and preened. After weeks of drawn out commentaries (many seemed forced, and contestants urged to 'dis each other), the last half-hour breezed by quickly. And while Danielle couldn't take a bad photo -- and she was gracious and kind -- her win was little curious based on the comments by judges Miss Jay, Tyra Banks (host), Nigel Barker, Twiggy and a non-English speaking Thai designer. They all seemed to agree that both girls were gorgeous and beautiful and took amazing photos, but who had more versatility? Danielle's mush-mouth -- not really her southern accent, as the Little Rock native kept referring to it -- was a huge issue with the judges. Still, she promises to take voice lessons and remain a sistah, albeit an articulate one. Congrats!

Joanie, ANTP Runner-Up


Was it surprising to you that Joanie didn't win America's Next Top Model? It was to us. We were suprised based on the misleading "deliberation" when the judges deemed Joanie more versatile. Luckily both Danielle and Joanie were probably two of the nicest contestants, although accident-prone Danielle edged out Joanie in the graciousness factor (Joanie got a little snitty about Sara -- who copied her moves on the elephant; Joanie complained that Sara "wanted" it less than the rest of them). Still, the lead-in to the final announcement seemed to proclaim the more articulate Beaver Falls, PA native Joanie the winner. "She can't take a bad picture." And we know that Twiggy had her back. Curious, no?

Fox’s Fall (and Mid-Season) Sked

FOX today unveiled its primetime schedule for the 2006-2007 television season, featuring the network’s most stable and balanced slate in years. Three new dramas and two new comedies will complement returning favorites on every night of the week this fall, announced Peter Liguori, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company.

The new dramas premiering this fall are VANISHED and STANDOFF from 20th Century Fox Television and JUSTICE from Warner Bros. Television and hitmaker Jerry Bruckheimer. The new comedies scheduled for fall debuts are the Brad Garrett comedy ‘TIL DEATH from Sony Pictures Television (seen above left), and HAPPY HOUR from writers Jeff and Jackie Filgo (“That ‘70s Show”) and Warner Bros. Television. FOX also has a new entry in the Saturday late-night arena, TALK SHOW WITH SPIKE FERESTEN, which debuts Saturday, Sept. 16 (MIDNIGHT-12:30 AM ET/PT) following MADtv. In addition, DUETS, a four-week unscripted series executive-produced by Simon Cowell, will air on Thursdays and Fridays prior to the Major League Baseball playoffs.

A fourth new drama, THE WEDDING ALBUM from Fox Television Studios and 20th Century Fox Television, will launch in January. 20th Century Fox Television’s THE WINNER – the first live-action comedy from FAMILY GUY’S Seth MacFarlane and Ricky Blitt – is also set to premiere at mid-season. Finally, the highly anticipated ON THE LOT, an unscripted series from Mark Burnett and Steven Spielberg, will debut next spring.

FOX series returning in 2006-2007 include 24, AMERICAN DAD, AMERICAN IDOL, AMERICA’S MOST WANTED: AMERICA STRIKES BACK, BONES, COPS, FAMILY GUY, HOUSE, KING OF THE HILL, THE LOOP, MADtv, NANNY 911, THE O.C., PRISON BREAK, THE SIMPSONS, TRADING SPOUSES: MEET YOUR NEW MOMMY and THE WAR AT HOME.

“This is the broadest, most stable and most vibrant schedule we’ve ever presented – one that is sure to help us further our lead as the No. 1 network in key demos,” Liguori said. “Once again, we’ll kick off with early premieres to eventize our launches and establish our series before baseball. We’ll also continue our strategy of extending the end of the current season, making for a truly year-round schedule.”

Liguori went on to say: “We’ll have returning shows every night of the week. And in January, 24 and AMERICAN IDOL, along with the BCS games during the first week of the new year, will allow us to launch additional series and reposition ourselves for another dominant second-half surge.”

Driven by the desire to become a success and win Alison’s heart, Glen goes through his “wonder years” a mere 20 years older than, well, most everyone. But it’s not in vain, as this unlikely underdog will eventually transform from fear-riddled underachiever to the richest man in Buffalo in a mere five years. Luckily, Glen doesn’t have to go though this awkward period alone. He becomes best friends with the only person he can truly relate to: Alison’s 13-year-old son JOSH (Keir Gilchrist, “A Lobster Tale”). After each episode, viewers will vote for their favorite duets. The winning pair will emerge from the competition in perfect harmony, while the losers definitely will have to change their tune.

ON THE LOT (Day and Time TBD): Aspiring director/filmmakers from across the country will vie for the opportunity of a lifetime when Mark Burnett, Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Television and FOX join forces on this exciting new unscripted series. Ultimately, one filmmaker will rise above the rest and will be rewarded with a studio development deal, ON THE LOT at DreamWorks. A group of 16 undiscovered talents will be brought to Hollywood and divided into several teams. Every week, each team will produce a short film in an assigned genre, running the gamut from comedies to thrillers, personal dramas to romance, sci-fi to horror. With one member selected as the director and other members helping produce, they’ll have access to the best resources the industry has to offer. But with the clock ticking, and other teams working with the same genre or premise, they’ll all need to match their vision with decisiveness, execution and flexibility. The competition will air on two nights weekly. The films will be shown and critiqued in front of a live audience during the one-hour “Film Premiere” episode. The judging panel will include a motion picture executive, a film critic and well-respected guest judges. But the filmmakers also will be subjected to perhaps the harshest judge of all … the public. It will be FOX viewers whose votes ultimately determine which film should be left on the cutting room floor. On the half-hour “Box Office” results show, the director of the losing feature will be sent home, leaving that team with fewer contestants to help produce the next week’s film. As the competition continues and more directors are eliminated, the remaining filmmakers will have to work individually, creating a new film every week until only the most talented individual is anointed the winner, whisked away to the DreamWorks studio, met by Steven Spielberg and shown to his or her new office … ON THE LOT.

The American Idol phenomenon continues as a record-breaking 50 million votes were cast this week after the Top 3 finalists each performed three songs – one chosen by legendary music industry mogul Clive Davis, one selected by the judges and one of his or her own choice. Last night in another dramatic results show, it was revealed that Elliott Yamin received the fewest votes after Tuesday’s performance show, ending his quest to become the next American Idol. Yamin, from Richmond, VA, sang “Open Arms,” “What You Won’t Do For Love” and “I Believe To My Soul.”

The biggest night on television is nearly here as the Final Two – Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee – battle it out for the Idol crown live on the American Idol performance show Tuesday, May 23 (8:00-9:00 PM live ET/tape-delayed PT).

Each contestant will perform a version of the winner’s single, and there will be a special performance of “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter. The American Idol: Season 5 Encores CD will be released on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, May 24, 2006 (8 to 10 p.m. ET live/PT tape-delayed) the Top 12 reunite on the Idol stage, and find out who America has chosen as the next American Idol. Carrie Underwood, the reigning American Idol, will perform her hit single “Don't Forget to Remember Me” before the new Idol is named.

Jodie Foster, Joely Fisher, Mario Van Peebles, and Julian Sands were guests when Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles hosted Gala 2006 - Une Soirée à Monte Carlo on 10 May 2006 at the Beverly Hills Hotel to honor Clara-Lisa Kabbaz as the recipient of the Esther and Raymond Kabbaz Award for her distinguished service to the French-American community. Co-chairs, Jouer cosmetics CEO and Founder, Christina Zilber and Sandra Winkler put together a lavish dinner reception in the Grand Ballroom of the famed Beverly Hills Hotel. The night included enjoyment for the whole family with casino games and silent and live auction items such as French lessons, luxurious stay at the Four Season and a zen consultation for your child’s room. All proceeds from the evening benefited Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles. Other guests included soccer player Franck and Beatrice Leboeuf, and Consul General of France Honorable Philippe Larrieu and Angelique Larrieu.

Foster, an alum (she was valedictorian) whose children attend the school, presented the award to Clara-Lisa Kabbaz (the principal of the school.) Foster and Kabbaz attended the school and have been friends since childhood. She joked about their special times at the school. Kabbaz' parents founded the school in 1964-1965 to bring French and American cultures together.

During the live auction, Foster bid on the "Top Chef" (personal chefs cook for a private dinner for 10 guests) item. Bidding went up to $25,000, but was outbid by another person. The auctioneer announced that the chefs were willing to provide their services to another winner if they matched the $25,000 bid. Foster raised her hand and won the second auction.

Joely Fisher, who just had her second child with husband Christopher Duddy, came to support Clara-Lisa Kabbaz. Her daughter, Skylar Grace is a student at Le Lycée Français de Los Angeles.

Mario Van Peebles emceed the event. More than $400,000 was raised.

TCM Memorial DayWar Films

35-Movie Film Festival

Turner Classic Movies (TCM), features a Memorial Day-weekend marathon of 35 classic war films. Among the memorable films included in the three-day festival, which will run Friday, May 26-Monday, May 29, 2006 are Best Picture Oscar winners From Here to Eternity and The Bridge on the River Kwai and John Wayne classics Flying Leathernecks, In Harm’s Way and The Longest Day.

As a highlight of the festival on Sunday, May 28, TCM will present From Here to Eternity as part of the network’s The Essentials movie showcase, with a special introduction by TCM host and author Robert Osborne and film critic Molly Haskell. Also on Sunday, May 28, TCM will present D.W. Griffith’s World War I silent film Hearts of the World as part of the network’s late-night Silent Sunday showcase.

On Memorial Day (Monday, May 29), in addition to the seminal war films The Bridge on the River Kwai, In Harm’s Way and The Longest Day, TCM’s offerings will include three movies set on the island of Bataan: 1943’s Cry “Havoc” a rare look at women working as nurses on the front lines; Bataan, with Robert Taylor; and Back to Bataan, with John Wayne. Also included in the Memorial Day line-up is Sidney Lumet’s gripping drama The Hill, featuring Sean Connery.
