So, our friend Joelle has become a vegan and we suggested we try the new-ish M Cafe in our hometown of Culver City. It's a Chaya restaurant and would suit her, especially since she's about to Master Cleanse.

At any rate, as we ate our soba noodles and Joelle had her chopped salad, we noticed that the couple at the table next to us were very (very) romantic. Like "get-a-room" romantic.

When she turned her head slightly, we realized that it was Zooey Deschanel, who we think is terrific and adorable. She's certainly similar in appearance to Katy Perry, but we think on even a cursory inspection, Deschanel is prettier, more luminscent.

We have no idea who she was engaged in the serious PDA with, but he was older, scruffy, plaid- shirt clad, significant beard stubble and hair that can only be described as a light-brown pageboy.

Deschanel was tall and thin, but not icky skinny, just slender and gorgous. She had quite a bit of makeup on which makes us wonder if she was coming from a photo shoot. We've read varying reports on Deschanel -- that she's alternatingly snobby or shy. We can't attest to any of that because we only saw her, didn't hear her speak (are you reading this, Mr. Loud -- Hasselhoff), and she was wholly entrenched in her romance.

BeansTalk had the "pleasure" of having lunch at an outside table at the very yummy Joan's on Third -- sitting next to a very loud David Hasselhoff. He greeted his companion, "complaining" about being asking "for autographs and all that shit" as he ordered inside the restaurant. He couldn't have disliked it too much, because he made sure to laugh ridiculously loud and speak in a tone so that the entire block would realize they had "celeb" in their midst. He lamented his lack of love, "I know she's out there." After marriages to two blondes, he said, "I love a brunette," adding "That waitress right there? I would fucking marry her." He discussed "all of the girls" he's dating. Nearly everything out of his mouth, was aggressive and peppered with profanity -- and very loud. Blech.

Torchwood: Filming Begins For New Season

Filming for the third season of BBC AMERICA’s highest rated series ever, Torchwood, has begun in Cardiff, Wales. From creator Russell T Davis (writer of Doctor Who, Queer as Folk), the hit sci-fi series is scheduled to return in 2009 with the third installment titled Torchwood: Children of Earth.

The new season sees the Torchwood team embarking on a single action-packed adventure as they battle for the future of the human race against the fiercest force they have encountered.

The highly-motivated team is John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper and Gareth David-Lloyd as Ianto Jones. Other regular cast involved in their high-octane adventure are Kai Owen as Rhys Williams, Gwen's husband, and Tom Price as PC Andy.

Special guests in the five part series are Peter Capaldi (Doctor Who, The Thick Of It, Skins), who plays the role of Mr. Frobisher – a civil servant who is hiding a terrible secret, Paul Copely (Coronation Street, The Bill) as Clem – the survivor still haunted by his past, and Liz May Brice (Bad Girls, The Bill) as Johnson – the cynical covert government agent determined to expose Torchwood.

Russell T Davies said, "The new series of Torchwood is hugely bold and promises to be bigger and better than ever – the audience is in for an amazing ride. This series is one big serial and the most ambitious story we've ever made, and we've got plenty of surprises in store."

Julie Gardner, Head of Drama, BBC Wales, said, "We hope to make Torchwood a gripping and surprising TV event with storylines that push our team into greater danger and sacrifice. Joining our main cast are some fantastic guest artists who will only add to making this unmissable TV."

On September 16, 2008, BBC Video unleashes to U.S. stores, Torchwood: The Complete Second Season, a fully-loaded 5-disc DVD set with over three hours of bonus features ranging from deleted scenes and outtakes to Torchwood Declassified featurettes and more.

This past April, both Seasons One and Two of Torchwood debuted in the Top 10 for “Top TV Seasons” on the iTunes Store and continue to be a hit for the online digital store.

This documentary delves into a small niche of adult women who collect and care for shockingly life-like baby dolls that cost hundreds of dollars. Known as “reborns,” some of these dolls have beating hearts and others have tiny veins. They are treated like real babies – with walks in the park, cuddles and regular diaper changes. The documentary follows several women including one who travels to Washington D.C. to pick up the fifth addition to her family of life-like dolls.

Moisturizers Spur Skin Cancers In Mice

A new study published August 14, 2008 revealed that Mineral Oil and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, found in many common skin moisturizers, caused mice that were exposed to UV radiation to develop more, and larger skin cancer tumors.

This study is the work of Dr Allan Conney and researchers of Rutger University's Susan Lehman Cullman Laboratory for Cancer Research. They exposed specially bred albino mice to UV radiation twice a week for 20 weeks to examine the development of Basal Cell and Squamous Cell Carcinomas, or non-melanoma skin cancers. Then a portion of the mice were treated with over-the-counter moisturizers, such as Eucerin, Dermabase, Dermovan and Vanicream.

What they found was that mice treated with the moisturizers had increased tumors, and larger tumors, which developed at a faster rate than mice that were not treated with moisturizers. After further research, they concluded that Mineral Oil and Sodium Lauryl Suphate may have caused the increase in skin cancer tumors.

However, these studies were performed on mice only. Drugs that have caused a certain reaction in animals do not always have similar effects in humans. Further, more research must be done to verify these results and its effect on human skin.

To help prevent skin cancer in the first place, always remember to practice good sun protection, like wearing a wide-brim hat and long sleeves, and using sunscreen with a minimum SPF 15. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outdoors, and look for products containing physical sunscreens, such as Titanium Dioxide.

BBC AMERICA’s new thriller, Primeval, from the creator of Walking With Dinosaurs, is already a monster hit and the raptors haven’t even arrived yet. Since unexplained anomalies began ripping holes in the fabric of time, Professor Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall) and his team have been facing off against savage creatures of the past in modern day. But now mankind faces its deadliest threat - a creature that’s never before walked the earth. Just as dangerous is the traitor in their midst and the lethal trap set for Cutter and his team. Who is the spy and what does his wife Helen’s (Juliet Aubrey) re-appearance have to do with it?

Tracking this highly intelligent animal, the most terrifying adversary yet, pushes the team to its limits.
