Ernest Borgnine Honored

BeansTalk Note: One of the last at-home interviews we did at our former day job was an interview with Ernest Borgnine, who we thought was marvelous. Check out what TCM has planned:
Academy Award®-winning actor Ernest Borgnine will join Turner Classic Movies (TCM) host Robert Osborne for an intimate discussion in PRIVATE SCREENINGS: ERNEST BORGNINE, a one-hour special premiering Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 at 8 p.m. With a career that spans more than 50 years and continues to this day, Borgnine has endeared himself to film and television audiences alike. This TCM original will be accompanied by a night of Borgnine’s films, including the Best Picture Oscar® winners Marty (1955) and From Here to Eternity (1953).



In PRIVATE SCREENINGS, Borgnine discusses his career that began by enrolling in the Randall School of Dramatic Arts in Hartford. From there, he broke into the professional ranks at the Barter Theatre in Virginia. Following his years at the Barter Theatre, he heard about a casting call, knocked on the door and asked if they had anything for him. A man came to the door and invited him to do a screen test. That man was director Robert Siodmak, who showed the screen test to producer Louis de Rouchemont. In no time, Borgnine was cast in the Lloyd Bridges labor-management drama, Whistle at Eaton Falls.



With the energy of a man in his 20s, Borgnine recounts such memories as being cast in From Here to Eternity opposite such top-name stars as Burt Lancaster, Montgomery Clift, Deborah Kerr and Frank Sinatra. It was only his fourth film. He also recalls being put under contract and not getting work; his surprise Oscar win for Marty, which was presented to him by Grace Kelly; his various marriages; and what he really wanted to title his book.



PRIVATE SCREENINGS: ERNEST BORGNINE is full of additional fascinating anecdotes:

· His mom was a countess, which makes him, in his own words, “a count of no account.”

· Prior to becoming an actor, he served in the Navy for 10 years.

· Marty was originally made to be a “tax loss.”

· The motivation to go into acting came from his mother.

· His inspiration to venture into television came from a child selling chocolate bars.



At the end of PRIVATE SCREENINGS, Borgnine reflects on his career: “I’d like to think that maybe through my pictures, through my television, through everything crazy in the life I’ve led, maybe somewhere I left a laugh or two. Making people laugh: This is what it’s all about.”

BeansTalk got a firsthand look at how sensational designer and all-around fashion guru Abi Ferrin, works her magic at a recent VIP shopping extravaganza in Beverly Hills, located at the Thompson Hotel. BeansTalk gawked over Ferrin's array of multi-colored fashions.

Abi Ferren names her unique pieces of clothing after women who h inspire her. The Denise dress in her 2008 Fall/Winter Collection (www.abiferrin.com), is an ideal example Ferrin’s versatile and functional clothing.

A President's Man Sits Down on TCM
John Dean, Former Counsel to President Nixon, Sits Down with Robert Osborne To Introduce Special TCM Presentation of All the President’s Men Oscar®-Winning Film Starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman Coming to TCM Sunday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. (ET)

John Dean, former White House counsel to President Richard M. Nixon, sits down with Turner Classic Movies (TCM) host Robert Osborne for an interview introducing TCM’s special election-week presentation of All the President’s Men (1976). Dean provides viewers an insider’s look at the Watergate scandal, which led to Nixon’s resignation. All the President’s Men will air Sunday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. (ET), just prior to Election Day on Nov. 4.


“Watergate was a landmark event in American history, and All the President’s Men is a riveting account of how the investigation unfolded,” said Charles Tabesh, senior vice president of programming for TCM. “We’re excited that John Dean is sharing his insights about Watergate and, of course, the way the events were depicted in All the President’s Men.”

Dean, who has written several books, says in an interview with Osborne that All the President’s Men is one of his favorite films. “It’s not the full story of Watergate by any stretch of the imagination,” he says. “It’s not a documentary.” But All the President’s Men is an entertaining story, he says, about a very complex topic. Dean also says the movie inspired two generations of investigative journalists.



All the President’s Men follows the story of Washington Post reporters Carl Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) and Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) as they chased what became the most politically charged story of the era. The film opens as Woodward looks into the arrest of a group of men accused of breaking into Democratic campaign headquarters, located in the Watergate hotel complex. When two of the men prove to have connections to a White House aide, Woodward smells a potential scandal.



After taking his story to his boss, legendary newsman Ben Bradlee (Jason Robards), Woodward is teamed with Bernstein, who has more experience and more contacts. The two reporters pursue the story relentlessly, getting assistance from an insider they dub “Deep Throat” (Hal Holbrook) and a bookkeeper (Jane Alexander) who fears for her life. They come to realize that the scandal reaches all the way into the Oval Office.



Nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (Alan J. Pakula) and Best Supporting Actress (Jane Alexander), the movie took home four awards for Best Supporting Actor (Robards), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Sound.



Before becoming White House counsel in July 1970 at age 31, John Dean was chief minority counsel to the judiciary committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, the associate director of a law reform commission and associate deputy attorney general of the United States. He served as President Nixon’s White House lawyer for 1,000 days.



Dean did his undergraduate studies at Colgate University and the College of Wooster, with majors in English literature and political science. He received a graduate fellowship from American University to study government and the presidency, before entering Georgetown University Law Center, where he received his J.D. in 1965.



Dean has long written on the subjects of law, government and politics. He recounted his days in the Nixon White House and Watergate in two books: Blind Ambition (1976) and Lost Honor (1982). In 2001, he published The Rehnquist Choice: The Untold Story of the Nixon Appointment that Redefined the Supreme Court. He followed that with a biography of President Warren G. Harding and Worse than Watergate: The Secret Presidency of George W. Bush. In 2006, Dean published Conservatives Without Conscience. His newest book is Broken Government: How Republican Rule Destroyed the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches.

Having retired from his career as an investment banker, Dean now devotes his time to writing and lecturing. He lives in Beverly Hills, Calif., with his wife, Maureen.

Primeval’s Creatures Return For Season Finale



The season finale of BBC America’s hit thriller, Primeval, will prove deadly for more than one member of the team. Since unexplained anomalies began ripping holes in the fabric of time, Professor Nick Cutter (Douglas Henshall) and his team have faced off against everything from a sabre-toothed tiger to a family of raptors to deadly predators from the future. Now a lethal experiment may unleash all of these creatures at once, threatening to destroy the human race.

In the season finale of the hit adventure series from the creator of Walking With Dinosaurs, tension has hit an all-time high. Q. What do you love about your job?



A. I love the opportunity to show and help women look beautiful and polish their appearance from head to toe. The thanks that I receive and the letters I get stating how I have helped change lives are priceless.



Q. Do you have a favorite feature to work on?



A. I love it all, I especially love challenges with bad hair, because it’s fun to use chemistry and color theory and make something fabulous out of something not so pretty. That said, I love making dramatic eyes!



Q. What's the question you get asked most often by women?



A. Do I need surgery? And what can I do about these lines around my lips.



Q. Which one is you’re go-to, can’t-live-without, you’d absolutely die if you didn’t have it product?



A. Orchid Gel original and tinted. It makes any skin look air brushed to perfection, male or female, and it is invisible.



Q. If a woman is going to invest in three makeup brushes, which do you feel are the most important to own?



A. Powder Brush, Blush Brush, and Large Shadow Brush.



Q. What is your most favorite makeup trick that you like to do?



A. Contour with my Professional Highlight, Contour, Blush and Bronze Kit, I can completely recreate a face with just this one kit. I can eliminate or accentuate any feature using this kit.



Q. What’s your favorite SKINN product to use on yourself?



A. DermAppeal, it makes skin look pore free and flawless just by scrubbing with it three times a week.



Q. Lipstick vs. Gloss?



A. That’s a hard call, I miss the 80’s when we used both and didn’t have to choose. Gloss is perfect for an everyday face and for before 5pm. Lipstick is perfect for a dressier face and for after 5pm. Women with lip-lines do better with lighter shades of lipstick that give a gloss look.

Primal Fear (You Know You Have One)

Being buried alive under six feet of suffocating dirt; the strike of a lethal snake; terrorist attacks that can occur at any time. These are just a few of the fears that cause the pulse to quicken and the muscles to tense up. Scientists refer to this as “fight or flight,” an instinctual response to danger, which throughout history has been essential to survival. PRIMAL FEAR, a two-hour special premiering on History™ Monday, October 27, 2008 at 9 p.m. ET/PT explores the science and background behind our deepest fears and their influence on pop culture and the human condition.



Whether the fear is inherent, traceable through our ancestry, or a learned fear caused by a traumatic event, the response is the same: the trigger of a small gland in the brain called the amygdala. Once engaged the physiology to survive takes over. Blood flow increases to the arms and legs for defense or escape, the pupils dilate for better focus. Even when a fear is imagined, such as the ‘boogey man,’ fight or flight goes into effect.



Primal Fear recounts historical events and legendary tales that invoked massive panic, as well as interviews with individuals who recently lived through harrowing occurrences:



· Shark attacks—on the Jersey shore in 1916, four people were killed by sharks in less than two weeks, creating widespread panic and eventually a best-selling novel and the Hollywood blockbuster, Jaws.

· Fear of snakes—many are deadly, leading to their portrayal as a symbol of evil, yet some people still dare to handle them.



· Concept of Hell—its power in religion and society, and how it has affected the human psyche, leading some to take drastic measures.



· Fear of monsters—from Dracula to the bogeyman, imagined fears typically begin in childhood.



· Fear of drowning—a lifeguard who overcame treacherous ocean waters to save a group of kids, shares his story of nearly succumbing to the powerful waves.



· Burned alive—a survivor of the tragic Rhode Island nightclub fire in 2003 describes how she lived through that terrible night and the fears she lives with today.
