DEVO on DVD: The staff of BeansTalk were treated to a live, front row performance of Devo at the opening of the AirStream Diner in the summer of 2002! Now Devo – Live in the Land of the Rising Sun: Japan 2003 is available on DVD.

Where do you go in Western influenced, post-industrial, technological society and feel like you're on another planet? Japan of course! Live in the Land of the Rising Sun: Japan 2003 provides a DEVOlutionary impression of the alien experience. 25 years ago as young primates, DEVO experienced the dislocation as men with a plan to change the world before the world changed them. They were making history, and the Japanese were willing subjects: submissive, effusive and generous to a fault. Uncle Sam was calling the shots and they reaped the rewards of hoards of adoring fans.

In the Summer of 2003, DEVO returned as true uncles and fathers, revered for what they did and said right in the first place. But now they were part of history, and culturally, the proverbial shoe was on the other foot. America, truly devolved, was on the decline and Japan was mapping the future. Nevertheless, DEVO was overwhelmed by those who came out to celebrate their belated return. The crowd knew all the words (in English!). They wore red Energy Domes - homemade and bootlegged of course. They followed DEVO through the streets and into their fantasy inspiring stores like "Tokyo Hands".

“Such incredible people and such incredible irony that they'd still love a band that talks about de-evolution. So, watch this DVD. See for yourself. I never thought I'd say this but there is hope for humans in this world. Herein lies some minor proof.” - Gerald V. Casale

Hungry Like the Wolf for Duran2: The five original members of Duran Duran are putting the finishing touches on their first studio album together in 21 years, due out on Epic Records worldwide in early October 2004. Simon LeBon (vocals), Andy Taylor (guitar), John Taylor (bass), Roger Taylor (drums) and Nick Rhodes (keyboards) are currently working in London¹s Sphere Studios with Grammy-award winning music and film producer Dallas Austin (Janet Jackson, Gwen Stefani, Pink, Drumline) on songs for their new album. “This is an incredible experience, you can’t pay for the history. I am a word for word, lyric for lyric fan. They are all super musicians! And we’re all Astronauts” raved Austin. ("Astronaut" is the title of one of the tracks the band is working on with Austin.)

The new album also features the work of Don Gilmore, who has produced albums for multi-platinum acts such as Good Charlotte and Linkin Park. “Duran

Duran really like to experiment,” explained Gilmore. “They don¹t like to do

Things the conventional way.” Asked about his favorite song on the forthcoming

album, Gilmore admitted “I’m a sucker for the moodier stuff – “Save A

Prayer,” “The Chauffeur,” etc. There’s a new song called (“Still Breathing”)

that’s in that same vein and it’s amazing.”

In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Simon LeBon reflected

On how he and his fellow band members “inspire each other

musically....Nobody else does it for me. It’s just very special.”

Soap Stuff: “SOAPnet Reveals ABC Soap Secrets,” a star-studded preview special that will give fans the inside scoop on “All My Children,” “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital” will air on the ABC Television Network on Monday, August 16, 2004 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon (ET) and on SOAPnet at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m.. The announcement came today from Brian Frons, president, ABC Daytime and Deborah Blackwell, general manager, SOAPnet.

The special will be hosted by SOAPnet’s Lisa Rinna and Ty Treadway, and feature popular ABC Daytime stars including “All My Children’s” Rebecca Budig, Cameron Mathison and Alicia Minshew; “One Life to Live’s” Kamar de los Reyes and Bree Williamson; and “General Hospital’s” Maurice Benard, Tyler Christopher and Natalia Livingston. The hour will be filled with never-before-seen interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and shocking plot twists that fans have to look forward to on their favorite ABC soaps.

“This special will be the only viewing option for fans to get exclusive top secret information about the stories we have planned for their shows and their favorite characters,” said Mr. Frons. “This is a great way for us to share our excitement for upcoming plots with the fans, and we will definitely be delivering some big surprises.”

“ABC Daytime is a great partner. It is exciting that they have offered us both the exclusive information for the special and the opportunity to appear on their network,” said Ms. Blackwell. “As the only 24/7 destination for inside access to stars and storylines we are thrilled to bring this show to the ABC and SOAPnet audiences.”

Recent studies demonstrate a synergistic relationship between ABC Daytime and SOAPnet viewing, with SOAPnet providing convenient and multiple occasions for ABC soap viewers to watch more episodes of “All My Children,” “One Life to Live” and

General Hospital.” This contributes to the overall health of the genre and increases the total number of episodes watched. SOAPnet is also an effective platform to reconnect lapsed viewers with their former soaps.

ABC Daytime is consistently number one among the key demographic of women 18 – 49. The line-up consists of “The View,” “All My Children,” “One Life to Live” and “General Hospital.”

SOAPnet will premiere its second installment of their original ‘micro’ series, "One Minute Soap,” on Monday, August 2nd during the 7 PM ET/PT hour. “One Minute Soap” is an episodic story told over the course of different weeks with a one-minute installment premiering every Monday and airing six times a day. Each 60 second episode will end with a cliffhanger.

The ‘micro’ series has been picked up for two new complete story arcs, to air over 12 weeks. In the first, “Office Romance” Molly (Claire Coffee, “The West Wing”), a young office assistant falls for who she thinks is mail room clerk David (Scott Paetty, “Felicity,” “Beverly Hills 90210”) while in reality is the president of the company.

In the second episode, “Too Late,” slated to begin airing in the Fall, Rebecca (Brittney Powell, “General Hospital”) anxiously anticipates a new date which she found through Match.com. Unfortunately, Rebecca’s ex-husband Jerry (Jason Shane Scott, “One Life to Live”) shows up to profess his love and declare that he wants her back at the same time as her date arrives at the door. Will Jerry’s antics spoil her date with Michael (Christopher Showerman, “George of the Jungle 2,” “The O.C.”), or will Rebecca come to her senses and choose the right man for her?

From NBC News:

Boyfriend Of Slain Woman Turns Himself In

LOS ANGELES -- Maynard Hatleberg, the suspect in the murder of Deborah Williams, turned himself in at the San Clemente, Calif., substation at 5:30 a.m. Thursday, according to Jim Amormino of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The victim's car was also recovered.

Hatleberg is being questioned by homicide detectives.

Deborah Williams' daughter discovered the body at 1068 Calle del Cerro at 7 p.m. Tuesday, said Orange County Sheriff's Department spokesperson Jim Amormino.

"She was found murdered in her bedroom," Amormino said. "She had cuts on the neck and throat from some type of sharp instrument, we're not sure exactly what."

Investigators sought the victim's boyfriend, Maynard Hatleberg, 47, "only for questioning," Amormino said.

Amormino said Hatleberg lived in the condominium "on and off," but he could offer no other address for the man.

"He does have a previous arrest record for narcotics violations," Amormino said.

According to Amormino, the victim's 26-year-old daughter had tried to file a missing person report.

"Late Tuesday afternoon the victim's daughter hired a locksmith and gained entrance into the victim's condominium," Amormino said. "Unfortunately, she found her mother dead in the bedroom," Amormino said. "The victim died of stab wounds, cuts to her neck and her throat with some unknown type cutting or sharp instrument."

There were no signs of forced entry at Unit 1517, and no signs of a struggle in the home, Amormino said.

Williams was on disability leave for about two years from her job at Irvine Valley College, where she was an office assistant, Amormino said.

A neighbor said that the two had a rocky relationship.

Mike Hoskins said that Hatleberg, whenever the two got into a fight, would walk "to a friend's house right up here all the time and that's constant. They fight all the time."

Amormino said he did not know if the couple frequently fought.

The car was described as a 1997 champagne-colored four-door Toyota Camry. The dog, a brown terrier, recently suffered a rattlesnake bite to its right paw, Amormino said.

OUTBACK JACK Episode 7 Tuesday, August 3 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

Jack takes the three remaining women home to meet his mother and solicit her advice on which two should proceed to the finale in the next-to-the-last episode of TBS's wild new reality series OUTBACK JACK, premiering Tuesday, August 3, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). OUTBACK JACK, from Bruce Nash's Nash Entertainment (Meet My Folks, For Love or Money, Who Wants To Marry My Dad?), puts a group of pampered city women to the test as they vie for the affections of their rugged leading man. The series, hosted by JD Roberto (Shop Til You Drop, Shark Chasers), combines fish-out-of-water comedy with romantic adventure, making for plenty of fun twists and turns.

Episode 7 opens with Jack (athlete-outdoorsman Vadim Dale) and the remaining three women riding horses through the Outback, stopping briefly to sample a local delicacy: green ants. They continue riding on until they arrive at a beautiful house, where they are greeted by Lori, Jack's mother. After they settle in, Lori gets to know the girls better by questioning them on a variety of personal topics. Then Jack takes each woman on a one-on-one date before they turn in for the night.

The next day, Jack and the group watch revealing home videos of the three remaining women. But elimination time is just around the corner, so after the videos, the girls leave Jack and his mother alone so he can seek her advice on whom to eliminate.
