Expectant mom Katie Holmes drinks Diet Coke -- and wears the cutest cashmere wrap, ever -- by Sonya Madden

The Cardi-Wrap by
Sonya Madden Tops
Fashion Must-Have List

Canadian Sonya Madden’s new creation, the cardi-wrap, combines the comfort of a wrap with the practicality of a sweater says Daily Candy – and they’re right. These lovely cashmere yummies are taking off like crazy. Marcia Cross and her publicist ordered them. Then Denise Richards saw one and wanted one, but not only for herself, but for her (first) baby Sam. The folks at Madden knitted one up for the little Sheen child – matching mummy-baby cardi-wrap heaven.

It can tie in front, in back, on the side, or can be left open. It’s made of 100 percent cashmere and comes in bright colors reminiscent of pink begonias, turquoise seas, green apples, and lemonade. Chunky stripe patterns are available too. It comes in three styles and more than 10 colors. Posted by Picasa

Pin-up cardi-wrap with mink cuffs by Sonya Madden ($545)

Good cozy looks don’t come cheap. They range in price from the mid-$300s to the mid- $500s. But we all know that Katie Holmes, with her brand new $20 million gift (an airplane, if you haven’t heard) from Tom Cruise, can certainly afford it. She is, apparently, keeping that Cruise heir cozy in cashmere, by Sonya Madden. Posted by Picasa

We’ve seen the cashmere caplets Madden makes, too, and they are DIVINE.

Available at Henri Bendel, 712 Fifth Avenue, at 56th Street (800-423-6335). It’s also available at select Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue stores, too.

Toni Braxton

Braxton, NAMM Coming Up Roses

NAMM (the International Music Product Association) announced it will team with The Baby Einstein Company to present an interactive float entitled “Making Music is
Magical” in the 117th annual Tournament of Roses Parade, to be held in
Pasadena, Calif., on Monday, January 2, 2006.

GRAMMY Award-winning, platinum-record-selling singer Toni Braxton will
perform live during the multi-network broadcast from the not-for-profit
association’s float, a ground-breaking event in the history of the
117-year-old parade. The “Making Music is Magical” float, designed to
communicate NAMM’s messages about the proven benefits of making music for
people of all ages, will feature characters from Disney’s new Little
Einsteins™ television show.

The “Making Music is Magical” float will feature giant versions of the
lovable animated Little Einsteins™ characters made of flowers, seeds, bark,
leaves and other natural materials. The characters include Leo (a
six-year-old conductor), Annie (Leo’s four-year-old singing sister), Quincy
(a five-year-old musical instrument virtuoso), June (a six-year-old dancer),
and Rocket (an incredible transforming ship that takes the team on exciting
musical adventures). Float animation will make the characters come alive,
with Rocket soaring 25 feet into the air.

Parade fans will not only hear the magic of music, but those on the parade
route can also participate as part of the float’s live drum circle, a
highlight of the Rose Parade that has become NAMM's signature each
year-proving that anyone with any level of musical ability can participate
in the joy and benefits of making music.

The NAMM float emphasizes the fun and importance of music making for all
ages, from pre-schoolers to seniors. Research conducted over several
decades shows that making music really IS magical!*

University music majors have the highest reading scores among all majors,
including English, biology, chemistry and math. And students who were
exposed to music based lessons scored a full 100 percent higher on fractions
tests than those who learned in the conventional manner. NAMM published a
report earlier this year demonstrating how the traditional teenage and young
adult core market for musical instruments is now being augmented by a
growing number of baby boomers and older Gen-Xers who are buying musical
instruments for themselves. In 2003, a Gallup poll commissioned by NAMM
demonstrated that 54 percent of American households have at least one person
who actively plays a musical instrument.

“Making music feeds the imagination and allows children to achieve their
full potential,” said Joe Lamond, president and CEO, NAMM. “Through our
participation in this wonderful event with these great partners, we hope to
get the world enjoying and hopefully playing some music.”

This marks NAMM’s third year as a float sponsor in the world-famous parade,
seen by millions of people around the world. In 2005, NAMM's float with
Sesame Workshop, "Music Makes Us a Family," won the Bob Hope Humor trophy as
the most comical and amusing float in the parade. The previous year, NAMM's
first-time entry with partner Sesame Workshop won the Isabella Coleman Award
for Color and Color Harmony Through Floral Use.

He’s quirky; he’s lovable; he’s witty; and he’s the perfect mixture of personality and knowledge. Meet Dr. Paul Trotman, otherwise known as Dr. Know, the host of Discovery Health Channel’s new primetime series of the same title. Dr. Know’s a real doctor (not just one on television), and when he’s not saving lives or healing the ill, this New Zealand native is putting medical myths and mysteries to the test.

Premiering Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Discovery Health Channel, this series without a doubt proves that laughter is the best medicine. In a highly entertaining way, Dr. Know debunks, deflates, discredits and demystifies medical and health myths, folk tales and truisms passed along from generation to generation. Dr. Know’s mission is simple and direct: separate fact from fiction.

In each episode of
Dr. Know, the good doctor sets out to prove or disprove two myths. After he explains the origin and mystique of each myth, Dr. Know goes in the field, talks to experts and conducts man-on-the street interviews to investigate and put the myths to the test. In some cases, Dr. Know seeks the aid of two “lab rats” to help solve mysteries. Plus, Dr. Know takes his sleuthing one step farther – to the laboratory where he backs his theories with science.

In this series, find out if a dog’s mouth is cleaner than that of a human and if gum takes seven years to digest. Also, learn if sugar truly makes children hyper and if sitting to close to the TV or computer actually damages the eyes. Episodes use dramatizations, animations and stand-ups with
Dr. Know as he embarks on bizarre, outrageous, humorous and sometimes daring investigations.

Dr. Know on his fascinating investigative fieldtrips every Tuesday at 8 p.m. beginning December 27, 2005.

Dr. Know is produced for Discovery Health Channel by Discovery Production Group. Executive producer for Discovery Production Group is Robin Sestero. Executive producer for Discovery Health Channel is Wendy Douglas. Posted by Picasa

Hooked on DVD

Get Hooked

Eclectic DVD and Babalu announce the release of Hooked for worldwide distribution on DVD.

Hooked is a documentary film exploring the “online cruising” phenomenon through the stories and reflections of gay men from around the country. Within the gay culture, online cruising - going online to meet other men and arranging an immediate, real-time sexual encounter - is rapidly emerging as a prime pastime.

The implications of this Huxlian game range from simple, “no-strings”, libido-fulfilling sex to deeper, darker issues concerning how we relate to other men, as well as to society in general. Further, depression, loneliness, and addiction seem to be recurring themes in the stories of men becoming “Hooked” on online cruising.

In the summer of 2001, director Todd Ahlberg began seeking interviewees for the documentary. Via gay-oriented cruising chat rooms on the Internet, he put out the word that he was looking for participants. Within two weeks, he had received over 1,200 responses. Eventually, these were paired down to a few dozen men, which ultimately led to Internet-based interviews (via NetMeeting) and an 11,000 mile road trek around the country for in-person interviews.

The film begins by looking at the “lighter side” of the phenomenon. It explores what makes this place so seductive, alluring, and, for many, so habit-forming. From “stats,” techniques and liars, to the thrill of the anonymous hook-up, online cruising has its own set of rules, and we learn them from some of the pros.

From here we illuminate the darker areas beneath the Internet veneer. From the “party and play” online drug scene to sexual addiction, the men come clean, sharing their stories and exposing their struggles. Further, we look at how the emerging gay generation’s attitudes toward sex and intimacy are being influenced by the online-cruising phenomenon.

Ultimately, the film's progression forces us to ponder how the online cruising realm, (or technology in general), with its appeal of instant connection and gratification, in fact leads to our feeling more alone, more isolated, than ever.

Cat Stevens

CD Debut Of "Indian Ocean" Highlights
Definitive Two-Cd Gold Retrospective
From Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam

Collection Also Features The Hits "The First Cut Is The Deepest," "Where Do The Children Play?," "Hard Headed Woman," "Wild World," "Moonshadow," "Morning Has Broken," "Peace Train," "Oh Very Young" And More

With the CD debut of "Indian Ocean," Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens) gives an inkling of a new creative dawn and lends hope that more music will soon be heard from a man who wrote and recorded some of his generation's most beloved songs. Penned and co-produced by Islam, "Indian Ocean" was digitally released in early 2005 to benefit, through Islam's Small Kindness charity, children in the region of Aceh decimated by the December 2004 tsunami. Now the recording highlights Cat Stevens: Gold (A&M/UMe), the singer-songwriter's definitive two-CD retrospective, released November 15, 2005.

After reaching the veritable heights of pop sovereignty, Cat Stevens bowed out and became a Muslim, changing his name to Yusuf Islam and did not record for nearly 20 years. But in the mid-'90s, Yusuf looked back at his life choices and realized what his music meant to the millions of people who had loved and grown up with it. After much soul-searching, he decided that his talent for building peace and harmony through his songs was needed more than ever. Gradually, he began taking steps towards a return.

2000 saw the release of The Very Best Of Cat Stevens, marking his first gold record in more than 20 years. In 2001, the Cat Stevens Box Set was released, from which he donated the royalties to the September 11th Fund and Small Kindness. He also re-emerged on various benefit albums--for Bosnia, the children of Iraq, AIDs, Band Aid and the tsunami victims.

Cat Stevens: Gold spans his career from 1966-1978 and each of his albums with 31 recordings digitally remastered from the original two-track analog master tapes. Gold opens with his second single, "Matthew And Son," which hit #2 U.K. Two other early songs were U.K. hits for others: "Here Comes My Baby" for the Tremeloes and "The First Cut Is The Deepest" for P.P. Arnold (decades later, Rod Stewart and Sheryl Crow respectively turned it into major transatlantic hits). In the U.S., "Lady D'Arbanville" and "Trouble" from 1970's Mona Bone Jakon were for many the introduction to Stevens. Elsewhere, Jimmy Cliff scored a U.K. Top 10 with a reggae reading of his "Wild World," which the author turned into a #11 U.S. hit on 1970's Tea For The Tillerman, which also included such gems as "Hard Headed Woman," "Father And Son," "Where Do The Children Play?" and "Sad Lisa." Stevens' "Don't Be Shy" and "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" were th en heard in the cult classic Harold And Maude.

Stevens' ability to encapsulate his metaphysical journey in song helped make him a massive star. He sold millions of copies of now-classic albums and performed for adoring crowds in arenas around the globe. 1971's Teaser And The Firecat scored with "Morning Has Broken" (#6), "Peace Train" (#7) and "Moonshadow" (#30). Gold also includes its "The Wind" and "Bitterblue." Catch Bull At Four in 1972 was his fourth of eight consecutive gold albums, and at U.S. #1 his highest charter, and included "Sitting" (#16), "Can't Keep It In," "Silent Sunlight," "Angelsea" and "18th Avenue (Kansas City Nightmare)." His take on Sam Cooke's "Another Saturday Night" (#6) was a single that year before joining his Greatest Hits.

From 1973's Foreigner, Gold culls the 18-minute "Foreigner Suite" and Top 40 "The Hurt." 1974's Buddha And The Chocolate Box yields the #10 "Oh Very Young" as well as "King Of Trees." 1975's concept album Numbers is represented by "Drywood" while 1977's Izitso spotlighted "(I Never Wanted) To Be A Star" and Top 40 "(Remember The Days Of The) Old Schoolyard." 1978's Back To Earth included the prophetic "Last Love Song."

Today, Yusuf Islam is arguably one of the world's most famous converts to Islam. A committed family man, he has continuously been devoted to charitable causes, especially for children and education. In 1996, he achieved historic equality for Muslim families in the U.K. by founding the first government-funded primary school for Muslim pupils alongside long-established existing schools for the Christian and Jewish communities. He has been honored with the World Social Award for his humanitarian relief work (previous recipients include Pope John Paul II, Steven Spielberg and Paul McCartney) and in 2004 he was presented the Man for Peace award by a committee of Nobel Peace Prize laureates. This year, he will receive an honorary doctorate in the U.K. for his work in education.

Meanwhile, three decades after their creation, Cat Stevens' vintage songs retain their emotional resonance. That they continue to be embraced by longtime admirers and new generations of fans is a testament to the songs' ongoing relevance and their timeless efforts to understand the world in which we all live and the tomorrow we all wish for.
