Sworn Virgin's Latest
We have a Sworn Virgin dress we love. It would look better if we were thinner. Ah well. They have news! Here's the latest release from the rep:
Eco Trip
Introducing Sworn Virgins - Pure Eco Fashion
Itchy, scratchy and uncomfortable…that’s what most girls think of when they conjure up thoughts of eco-friendly clothing. But one company proves that suddenly…it’s comfortable to be green.
The brainchild of partners Roshanne Aghevli and Alex Amini, Sworn Virgins makes good on its promise of looking good while feeling good. Each Sworn Virgins style is made of 100% biodegradable bamboo fibers that are spun into an ultra soft jersey material.
“It started out with the idea of being committed to purity…committed to taking care of our planet” says designer Aghevli. And in 2006 the duo decided to take their environmental plight to the racks of the nation’s finest boutiques. They hit the ground running in search of a sustainable fabric…a biodegradable, ultra-creamy fiber that would also allow them to utilize environmentally sound manufacturing techniques.
They stumbled upon bamboo…known for being biodegradable, naturally anti-bacterial and sweat proof. Unlike other “green” fabrics, bamboo is silky-soft with a natural drape that makes their subtle, sexy designs so flattering and comfortable.
And don’t think that they have forsaken trend in order to save the planet, because these do-gooders have style. The line boasts an array of current trends and classic styles available in an ever-changing palette of bright colors, neutral hues and feminine prints. Swinging skirts, bouncing baby dolls and plunging tanks abound along with fluid t-shirt dresses and leggings.
All that…and they don’t have to be dry-cleaned.
Sworn Virgins tops, tunics and dresses range from $80 to $220 and are available at top drawer boutiques around the country from Fred Segal to Big Drop. www.swornvirgins.com.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Glow Sheers
OK, we know we just wrote about the Neutrogena Healthy Skin Enhancer, but we just discovered this cousin (or sibling) and we may like it even a bit better, Healthy Skin Glow Sheers, which has an SPF 30, and is lighter weight. We got the Medium to Tan 40 and it seems to work well, at least so far. It feels lovely, not heavy at all and certainly doesn't look like traditional foundation. We can't say enough about tinted moisturizer for daily use.
Here's what Neutrogena has to say on their website:
Neutrogena® Healthy Skin Glow Sheers™ provide sheer, natural-looking coverage for a radiant glow, plus SPF 30 and skin-friendly anti-oxidants to safeguard skin from environmental damage.
A brilliant blend of makeup, sun protection and anti-oxidants, Healthy Skin Glow Sheers™ is a makeup that does it all. The lightweight, non-greasy formula with anti-oxidants vitamins A, C and E provides natural-looking coverage while SPF 30 delivers superior sun protection. They give your skin the kind of natural-looking radiance that barely ever comes naturally. Available in five sheer, skin tone shades and an all-over face bronzer.

Natural Beauty
by Andrea Goodwin, associate editor (agoodwin@beanstalkbiz.com)
BeansTalk has been a big fan of the von Natur skin care line for some time. Accordingly, we were so pleased to learn of the launch of their Mineral Based Cosmetic Collection. Kayla Fioravanti, formulator and creator of von Natur, has really responded to the customer who demands high quality while maintaining concern about the manufacturing process. The hallmarks of von Natur are their “vegan” and “cruelty free” certifications printed on all of their products. Animal-friendly women can wear their products with peace of mind.
As always, BeansTalk had to try a sampling of mineral foundations, which are talc-free and fragrance-free. This staffer, a skin cancer survivor, also appreciated the ingredient combination of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide – a natural sun protectant, and non allergenic.
If you are new to mineral make-up, know that it does take a bit of practice to refine a routine that works for you. However, the real obstacle for most women is breaking out of their traditional make-up and compressed powder habit and trying something new. To help the novice get started here is a basic guide:
Start with von Natur’s Liquid Foundation ($36.00 1 fl oz.) With a sponge or fingertip apply a sheer cover of make-up to clean face. A little goes a long way here. For a light to medium face the Birch color is a good choice. Additionally, this product is packed with ingredients which renew collagen (for plumping and fullness), heal skin ailments and diminish the appearance of pores and wrinkles.
Follow up with concealer. ($19.00 4g) The von Natur concealers are available in five shades:
Normalize (Pink) – normalize hyperpigmentation, bruising or deep gray under eye circles Goodbye (Green) – cover breakouts, birthmarks, rosacea and scarring Neutralize (Yellow) – neutralize bluish skin tones & dark under eye circles Disguise (Neutral) – cover imperfections Brighten (White) – accentuate features
It may be contrary to instinct for some women to apply green or yellow foundation to one’s face, but in actuality, the wisdom of neutralizing dark circles and unwanted pigmentation with an opposing color has been long accepted in the cosmetics industry and is based upon well established color science. BeansTalk scrutinized the under eye results in various lighting and was very happy.
BeansTalk’s best bet for achieving a natural and “unmade up” look is to use a loose mineral foundation such as von Natur’s Mineral Powder ($26.00 10g) available in birch, cedar, magnolia, maple, myrtlewood, oak, pine, redwood, spruce sycamore, and willow. Whether you are prepping for an exciting night on the town, going for the natural look, or just touching up, this lightweight, silky mineral powder can give you a light to heavy coverage. As always, a proper kabuki brush is needed for even blending, so invest in a good one! Go over the face with a quick, gentle buffing motion, using the kabuki, to blend and soften.
After a brush of cheek color or bronzer BeansTalk recommends the use of a finishing powder to set the makeup. Von Natur offers the Complete Setting Powder ($24.00 10g) It extends the life of foundation throughout the day, and reduces shine by aiding in oil absorption. Additionally, it can be used alone for light coverage or is great if you want to prevent your foundation from “sliding” off before the end of the day.

Can’t Go Wrong With Wong
By Lesley Althaus, BeansTalk Special Correspondent
BeansTalk can appreciate the splendor and occasional snobbery of a good fashion show, especially one with a driving retro rock beat. We were more than happy to attend the Sue Wong Fall 2007 fashion show, during the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios in our hometown of Culver City, Calif., on Sunday, March 18, 2007.
We also saw our ME’s celebrity acquaintance, Niecy Nash, who, of course, sat front and center, as did an overly effusive Maria Conchita Alonso, soap star Jacklyn Zeman and an “O.C.” star we didn’t know.
We got a kick out of the show’s finale, which featured what we think of as fashion-show only wedding gowns, replete with lots of lace and feathers. They looked so heavy even our fellow attendee, our (if we say so ourselves) model-built teenage daughter (aka MBTD) would find it a tiny struggle to glide down the church aisle.
Wong is best known for her flower prints and handkerchief hem dresses that have been one of the few designs that have gone from the runway to reality.
The evening gowns were classy and sophisticated – they might not work for the MBTD’s prom exactly, but they’re certainly something we’d wear, and many of our peers. If we were a celebrity or walking down the red carpet with one (and we’re not talking an administrative escort, but a real one), we’d be more than happy to don one of these lovely gowns.
The main portion of the show was dedicated to the burgeoning rock fashion of the sixties and seventies, a celebration, if you will, to Carnaby Street, with sixties elegant boho dresses. Her signature colors – here amplified into very bold, nearly neon-- were applied to styles that would flatter many forms, and we’re talking bubble skirts and babydoll frame dresses. Metallic minis! When will we see Nicole Richie in one? Chloe Sevigny?
Also grabbing from that era were the maxi-dresses. Our first thought? There’s something for everyone here! Geometrics, high-necks, halters. Think Jean Schrimpton, Edie Sedgewick, Mary Quant.
Gripping her cane, Wong seemed sweetly grateful for the standing ovation: "The Mod era was my era, I came of age during that time, so this was a no-brainer,” she said of the theme of her collection.

BeansTalk's Dark Side
By Andrea Goodwin, Associate Editor agoodwin@beanstalkbiz.com
BeansTalk is not a purple freak. You will not find any purple sofas in our house. We are fans, however, of OPI’s fall 2006 mega-hit Lincoln Park After Dark nail lacquer. BeansTalk readers may recall from last fall’s “Handbook on Nails” issue, dark nails offer a very modern look, and we are happy to report that this trend is being carried through for spring. Purple, in particular is great for any woman with an olive complexion like this staffer or the BeansTalk ME.
OPI has updated their Chicago collection hit with Lincoln Park at Midnight. (above) This shade possesses “the drama of the original Lincoln Park, with the romance of a midnight tryst.” It looks super smart with this years must-have metallic silver sandals, or peeking out from a high pair of open-toed platform pumps. Now that you have been advised… good luck finding it in stores. Most retailers have a hard time keeping it in stock!
Retail: about $6.00 http://www.opi.com/
BeansTalk Quicktip: Coordinate this nail lacquer with Laura Mercier’s Stick Gloss in Black Orchid. We think Rachel Weisz looked beautiful in it at the 79th Annual Academy Awards. (above) Stickgloss provides a sheer wash of color, creates dimension and adds fullness to the lips. Stickgloss is ultra-hydrating and longer-wearing than a traditional Lip Glace.
Retail: $20.00 http://www.lauramercier.com/
We think these modern looking lip and nail shades make a perfect pair.

Tips from the Top
(Of Make-Up Artists)
In order to create the most youthful look possible with your make-up , Kirsten Corcoran of Larenim Mineral Makeup, suggests beginning with the application of 2-3 very light layers of mineral foundation, or until you have achieved an evenly toned complexion. Use a firm but silky kabuki type brush to assure the best distribution of your minerals. If any blemishes still show through, apply a heavier layer of foundation or a concealer with a stiff concealer type brush, making sure you have tapered the edges of the applied concealer, as to not draw attention to the make-up.
For more youthful looking eyes, apply a yellow tinted concealer to your under eye area to cover bluish circles and generally brighten the eye area. Once you have applied your foundation and concealer, blemishes, dark spots, broken capillaries, and under eye circles should be minimized, if not altogether camouflaged. Fine lines and pores should appear minimized.
Next use a concealer style brush to apply a pore spackling product to “fill” the pores in. This will help to create a porcelain finish which is a trademark of young, healthy skin.
Apply a shade of blush which mimics the natural color of your cheeks when flushed. You can also brush some bronzer on your face, but make sure your bronzer is not the orange, sparkly variety which can wind up making you look older and unnatural in appearance…not a trademark of youthful beauty!
As a finishing step, apply a light layer of a talc-free setting powder. Go over the face with a quick, gentle buffing motion, again using the kabuki, to blend and soften. To immediately set the minerals and create a translucent glow, lightly mist a facial spray that contains glycerin, over your make-up.
The net effect is one of a porcelain smooth finish and a natural glow that mimics the look of having falling in love or being pregnant. All imperfections have been minimized without the person appearing to be wearing make-up. Youthful beauty is glowing and natural!
*Delicious summer shades: Angelique, Odyssey and Splendor along with a perfect polish with Invisi-Pore.

BBC America’s Wild at Heart
A dysfunctional family attempts to resolve deep-seated issues in the wilds of South Africa in BBC America’s latest drama premiere. Wild at Heart premieres Saturday, April 21st at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.
Combining family drama, stunning scenery and gripping adventure, Wild at Heart tells the story of an urban clan who swap conventional city life in Britain for the excitement and dangers of life in the unfamiliar environment of the South African bush.
Danny Trevanion (Stephen Tompkinson, Prime Suspect), a widower and veterinary surgeon, lives with his teenage daughter, Rosie (Lucy Jo-Hudson), new wife Sarah (Amanda Holden, Cutting It) and her two children from a previous marriage, eight-year-old Olivia (Rafaella Hutchinson) and thirteen-year-old Evan (Luke Ward-Wilkinson).
Tensions in the family are running high - Rosie is bitterly resentful her father has remarried and Evan is so out of control he threatens school bullies with a tranquiliser gun. When Danny brings home a monkey, whose life he saved after it was smuggled illegally into the UK, Sarah decides the family should travel together to Africa to return it to its natural habitat – hoping they’ll finally bond as a family along the way.
Once there, the Trevanions meet Du Plessis (Deon Stewardson), a hard-bitten Afrikaaner who owns a decaying game reserve. When Du Plessis sees Danny’s skill as a vet, he suggests Danny and Sarah buy into the reserve and help him transform it into a successful game park. Sarah is ecstatic - this could be a fresh start for all of them, an opportunity to become a proper family. She and Danny accept the offer and make the brave, life-altering decision to move to South Africa.
The six part season chronicles their adventures from getting the game park up and running to finding and caring for animals and dealing with unfamiliar dangers of life in the bush. Even after the first tourists start to arrive, the challenge of managing a new business only becomes harder with the attention of a charming but ruthless rival game-park owner, Alex Tate (Gary Lawson), who becomes a threat both to Danny and Sarah’s business and their marriage.
Interview with Stephen Tompkinson who plays widowed vet Danny Trevanion.
Stephen has been gracing UK television screens for nearly twenty years. After coming to prominence in satirical comedy Drop the Dead Donkey he went on to star in numerous hit shows including Father Ted and Ballykissangel as well as appearing in Brassed Off with Ewan McGregor.
Despite a varied acting career, the experience of filming with wild animals in Africa is something very new for Stephen:
"The size of them can be very forbidding but the female elephant, Three, who I filmed with has always been very gentle with me so I guess I’m very fortunate.
"I just called them as you would dogs and they both came swimming over to me with just their heads out of the water so I could scratch their heads. It was just superb. It’s such a privilege and I do feel very spoilt." But as well as being awe inspiring, working with these animals also required special diligence. He continues:
"So for me it’s an absolute love of the animals but at the same time being wary of them because things can change in seconds. They are not tame and it’s a question of how much they tolerate you at any given time. Luckily we’ve been very fortunate so far."
The other major challenge was accurately portraying the work of a vet:
“I insist on the vet going through each and every procedure in as much detail as possible before I have to film it. For Danny his veterinary work is the one area of his life that he is in control of and knows exactly what to do at exactly the right time.
"By contrast in his personal life Danny is quite hopeless really and just keeps smiling and hopes that everyone just gets along."
In addition to offering a new professional challenge, the actor is thrilled that Wild at Heart has given him the opportunity to star in another hit show:
"I haven't had a hit like this since Ballykissangel and often you only get one in a lifetime as an actor so it has thrilled me beyond belief to get a second bite at the cherry and to get as big an audience as Wild at Heart did."

Our Skin: Enhanced
Every now and then we tout a product that we actually use on a regular basis. We’ve never been a fan of foundation makeup, and only wear it when it’s been applied to our ancient face by a makeup artist for our occasional television pundit spots.
We pretty much only wear powder mineral makeup, unless it’s a fancy event (very rare in our suburbanite existence). Then, we use Smashbox’s Backdrop Cooling Tint (Backdrop Cooling Tint This sheer, lightweight foundation leaves a natural, radiant finish to the skin. Contains a revolutionary cooling agent that causes a cool, energizing sensation on your face for up to 15 minutes leaving you completely refreshed, while aloe, green tea and vitamins nourish skin, $32), which is very nice. We love that cool feeling. That’s why we like our new favorite Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner (see story from last week).
But we digress. We’ve always liked tinted moisturizers and have just discovered the new Healthy Skin Enhancer by Neutrogena. The only thing we would strongly recommend is that the product may appear dark in the bottle/jar, but it goes on a lot lighter than it appears. Luckily, we were able to sample. We would’ve not hesitated to buy the natural to tan (40), but when we tried it, it was too light. The Tan to Medium (50), was perfect.
Suggested retail $11.79. On sale at drugstore.com for $10.99, and at Ulta for $10.29.

What's Happening With Delux Beauty?
Why does Grey's Anatomy's Patrick Dempsy look grumpy? Is he annoyed that his salary negotiations aren't completed yet? Is he tired of the oppressive tension on the set?
Or, is he wondering if his wife, makeup artist Jillian Fink Demsey just wants to be a stay-at-home mom?
The real story is he probably knows what she wants to do/is going to do.
The ones who don't know? Fans of Fink Dempsey's Delux Beauty cosmetics lines, which features very cute portable, click-together pricy products. BeansTalk is a fan of the concealer and we grudgingly have handed over our $16 for the "full" size, that, in other universes, would be a sample size.
A couple of months ago, we were quite surprised to hear that our near-work Sephora, the one at Hollywood and Highland, was no longer carrying Delux. We were told that some of their other stores still had the line.
Today, we made our first trip to NIRVANA. Well, o.k., it was just the Ulta store on La Brea (and it was damn awesome, thank you very much; we'd never been to one!). And in the "Clearance" area were a bunch of Delux products. We bought u a bunch. Our concealer was $4.99. We got three. We also got a little lip gloss palatte that retailed (a limited edition) for $22 and it, too, was only $4.99.
When we got to work the photo editor told us that Fink Dempsey's company, Bardine, had also folded.
What does that tell us? That Fink Dempsey has her mind and focus on other things. The Delux Beauty website is still up and running, but we suspect it's not going to be so for very long.
If you have a fave product, get it now. That's what we did when our beloved Tony & Tina folded. We're still sad about that.
Moving on...
