Celebrity Sighting

Catherine O'Hara!

BeansTalk loves estate sales. Last Friday, we were in Brentwood at the estate of Esther Bryman (who founded the Bryman Schools in 1960) and overheard an estate sale assistant saying, "Have you been to our sales before?" to which a (at this point) disembodied voice responded, "Um, no."

He immediately responded, "Oh! You must just have one of those faces!"

At the very next moment, we found ourselves face-to-face with said "face" -- it was Cookie Guggleman/Mrs. McAllister herself, brilliant comedienne Catherine O'Hara. Even though we make it a practice to not approach celebrities, we were inadvertently already pretty much past approach.

"Oh," we said, startled with a big smile, "That's why you look familiar!" She returned the grin, and we couldn't help but add, "We're big fans."

In the last five years, we've chronicled our own adventures in celebrity spotting and this is one of the best. We love her. She's so brilliant and funny and is movie-dom's best mom (Beetlejuice, Home Alone, Penelope, Monster House, Chicken Little, Betsy's Wedding). She's a staple in Chris Guest's hilarious improved films (A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration, Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman) and it was wholly delightful to see her at the Now/Again estate sale (which are run with easy efficiency by the darling, we-adore-them Now/Again team of the Silver Lake-based (and Denton, Texas native) Dan Jordan and his partner, Danna McCallum).
