Nicky Hilton: Undercover

Looking like a character from "Get Smart" (the Steve Carrell/Anne Hathaway version, not the iconic Don Addams TV one), Nicky Hilton, strolled the Century City Mall (now Westfield) today, wearing a beige belted trench coat, and giant sunshades that almost took up her entire face. She was alone, and had what looked like a decidedly satisfied shopping face (if you can imagine that).

(Note: The sunshades she's wearing in the image above are probably half the size of the ones she had on today.)

Masterpiece Theatre To
Air BBC's Small Island

Adapted from Andrea Levy’s best-selling, award-winning novel, “Small Island” tells the moving saga of two couples — one Jamaican, one English — whose lives intertwine in both friendship and tragic misunderstanding in post-World-War-II Britain. Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean) and David Oyelowo (The Last King of Scotland) star as the Jamaican immigrants, with Ruth Wilson (“Jane Eyre”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Last Enemy”) as their English landlords. Part 1 of 2. Laura Linney hosts. Airs 18 April 2010 9 p.m.

Episode 1

Lives and loves entwine in Andrea Levy's award-winning story of Jamaicans and Londoners involved in the Second World War.
London 1948: Hortense joins Gilbert, her new husband, in England, where he is lodging with Queenie Bligh. The women have both married in unpromising circumstances as love is a luxury neither can afford. As Hortense remembers her life in Jamaica and the profound love she had for Michael and his betrayal of her, Queenie also remembers her night of passion with the same Michael when her husband was away at war. Initially suspicious of each other, will they uncover the secret they share?

Episode 2

The emotional and moving climax to the stories of Hortense, Queenie and Gilbert whose lives entwine in post Second World War London.
Hortense begins her new life in England and soon learns it is not the golden land she hoped it would be. She and Gilbert suffer racism and ignorance, but in adversity they discover new qualities in each other and begin to fall in love. Queenie is shocked when her husband Bernard returns to her after years away. When she goes into labour and has a baby by a mysterious father, the lives of all four are changed forever.

A Q&A with Andrea Levy, best-selling author of Small Island

How did you feel when you were approached to turn Small Island into a TV drama?
I felt really thrilled, although a little cautious. With film and TV there are always many hurdles to jump before anything finally makes it on to the screen. I was also anxious to know whether I would agree with the producers' vision for the adaptation. Happily they have been great champions of the spirit of the book throughout.

Is it strange to see the characters and worlds you have created being brought to life?
I have a fantasy that one day I will have a party and the guests will be all the characters I have created in my novels. Having Small Island adapted for TV, and the characters brought to life by such superb actors, is the nearest I can get to making that a reality. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to remember that this whole story started in my head.

Did you spend any time on the set?
The filming took place in Dublin, Belfast and Jamaica. I had plans to visit the set in Belfast but in the end I couldn't make it. But I did meet the director and the cast at an early run-through in London and that was a real thrill. The producers were great at sending me selected stills and rushes from the filming, so I felt very much in touch as it all progressed.

What was the inspiration for the book?
The arrival of the ship Empire Windrush in 1948 with nearly 500 Caribbean migrants on board, seems to have become a marker for modern Britain's multicultural beginnings. My dad was on that ship, one of the 'pioneers'. That's what first inspired me to write Small Island. I wanted to explore my parents' experiences when they first came to this country from Jamaica, and what it meant to the people they came to live amongst.

How closely does it mirror your family's experience?
My research for the book began with chatting to my mum. From there I read lots of books, talked to my mother-in-law, interviewed men who had been in the services during the Second World War, etc. Some of my family's experiences certainly appear in the book, but other material was gleaned from sources outside the family.

Do you think it important that this story be told through television?
I think television is a great medium for this story. I love the thought that by channel-punching someone might stumble upon this drama – that it might reach people who would otherwise have thought that a story like this was not for them.

Were you surprised at the phenomenal success of the book?
I'll say! Before Small Island there was always the feeling, certainly in publishing, that stories that revolved around black British characters would only ever have a limited appeal. But in the event the novel proved more universal, as it was simply a tale of people getting on with their lives under difficult circumstances.

What do you think appealed most to people?
The book tells a familiar story but from a different perspective. It's a tale of human endeavour, endurance, pain, triumph and, most of all, love.

Did the characters' experience resonate with many of your audience?
I have received many letters from people kindly telling me how the book resonated with them. And all kinds of people, too – young, old, black, white, male and female. That has surprised me the most – the breadth of people who have responded as if this was their story, too.

Have you seen any of the finished drama – if so, how did it feel watching it?
Yes, I have seen it all. I watched it through twice. The first time I was terrified, not knowing whether it would live up to my expectations. The second time I just relaxed and enjoyed it. I think it's wonderful. I'm really excited at the thought that millions of people may see the final version.

Shellac™ -- The Latest In Nail Glamour

CND (Creative Nail Design), a leader in professional nail, hand and foot beauty, introduces the first hybrid nail color, after nearly five years of development. Shellac™ Hybrid Nail Color, says CND, is chip and smudge resistant and cuts drying time. The company says the product applies like polish, wears for 14 days of high-gloss shine, and is removed in minutes.

Shellac paints on like polish - base coat, color, top coat - and is cured in a UV light so there is zero dry time. The colors are hypo-allergenic, and "three-Free" - no formaldehyde, toluene or DBP.

Shellac launches in a range of 12 shades, from French pinks and whites, to red and rich darks. The formula is thin and flexible like polish, so it looks natural, and provides nail protection with a resilient mirror finish that resists dullness and chipping.

Removal, CND says, is easy. No soaking, drilling or filing is necessary. Nails are wrapped in individual Shellac Remover Wraps -integrated cotton pads that limit finger and skin exposure to acetone by keeping it pinpointed on just the nail.

CND says, "Ten minutes of time in exchange for two weeks of perfect color is all it takes."

Shellac is a professional salon service launching globally in May 2010. Information, www.cnd.com.

Sean Bean Back as Sharpe

Masterpiece Classic: "Sharpe's Peril"

Sharpe's Peril, by Russell Lewis, takes up where Sharpe's Challenge left off. Sharpe and Harper are on their way to Madras, from where they are to sail to England, when they come upon an East India Company baggage train, also making its way to Madras.

The party - which includes among its number a heavily pregnant woman and a headstrong French woman, Marie Angelique, who is joining her fiancé - travels warily through enemy territory. Its leaders fear Chitu, the legendary bandit leader who controls the area.

When the attack happens, the Company officers in charge prove inadequate to its defence, Sharpe has to take over and lead the party 300 miles through enemy territory. He has to train up the ill assorted group into proper soldiers and finds himself defending helpless villagers against the corrupt and ruthless Colonel Dragomirov the local Company commander in the area.

The thrilling adventures of Colonel Richard Sharpe continue as he leads a ragtag party of civilians and soldiers on a march across India, with the murderous army of an opium lord in hot pursuit. Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings) stars as Sharpe, with Daragh O’Malley as his comrade-in-arms, Sergeant Major Patrick Harper, in this latest installment of the series based on Bernard Cornwell’s best-selling novels. Laura Linney hosts.

The show was filmed in India in March and April of 2008. Using stunning locations throughout India including Orchha and Khajuraho, producers Malcolm Craddock and Muir Sutherland state; "India offers so many unique factors to a television drama, and excellent production value. We're taking advantage of wonderful vistas, exotic palaces, elephants and camels, the full vibrancy of this breathtaking country. It's an wonderful experience quite unlike anywhere in the West. Like us all, Sean is keen to return to this wonderful country, particularly as this time Sharpe is on the side of downtrodden villagers, fighting together against officers from the East India Company that he so despises for their airs and venality. It's classic Sharpe for a modern television audience."

Sharpe's Peril airs 4 April 2010 9 p.m. PBS

You Really Got Me -
The Story of the Kinks

Coming To DVD May 18

Contains rarely seen performances from the sixties right through to the nineties.

Voiceprint and MVD Visual will release of "You Really Got Me - The Story of the Kinks" for North American distribution on May 18, 2010.

This DVD also contains comments from the various members of the band including Ray Davies, Dave Davies and Mick Avory.

Some of the performances featured here include You Really Got Me, 'Til The End Of The Day, Waterloo Sunset, Days, Celluloid Heroes and many more including the Dave Davies hit single Death Of A Clown. Footage comes from live concerts and television performances in America, the UK, Germany and Japan.

Led by Ray Davies and his younger brother Dave Davies, the Kinks burst onto the music scene in 1964 with their groundbreaking hit single "You Really Got Me." This was the band's third single and it reached number one in the UK singles chart and made the American Top Ten.

Along with the Davies brothers, the band was made up of bassist Pete Quaife and drummer Mick Avory. Originally, like many other aspiring band of the early sixties they were an aspiring rhythm and blues band, and their first two singles bear out this claim, although the second single "You Still Want Me" was the first Kinks single to be written by Ray Davies.

Once the band broke through with "You Really Got Me" hit singles followed with All Day And All Of The Night, Tired Of Waiting For You, Set Me Free and A Well Respected Man (all of which were written by Ray Davies, as was the vast majority of the Kinks material) all doing well within the next twelve months. In fact, the Kinks were considered one of the biggest bands of the period and Ray Davies, one of the eras more important and highly regarded song writers.

The band continued until mid-1999, and have been inactive as a band, with both Ray and Dave Davies releasing solo material. In 2004, Dave Davies suffered a stroke, but since that time has made a slow but steady recovery. Ray Davies has also said he is keen to reunite the Kinks and rumours persist that this may happen in 2010.

Hunter Goes "Grace"-Fully

by Amanda Bellafiore
BeansTalk Contributor

“There’s a beauty to having a finite thing to “[Saving] Grace” and I actually always felt that from the beginning,” says Holly Hunter, star of the TNT series, during a recent press conference.

After three successful seasons, the crime-drama Saving Grace, starring Holly Hunter will solve its last case with a nine-episode final season beginning March 29, 2010.

Apparently, TNT requested a full-order fourth season of “Saving Grace,” but the show’s producers, Fox TV Studios, declined the offer citing financial concerns.

Oscar- and Golden Globe-winner Hunter stars as detective Grace Hanadarko, who’s offered redemption from the unlikely Earl, an angel (character-actor Leon Rippy). Saving Grace is known for its serialized storylines and although it has come to an abrupt end loose ends will be tied and fans will receive closure.

Hunter describes this ending as poetry, “I wanted it to be a freight train that was running towards a destination that was coming quickly. We were hurdling towards destiny through this woman Grace, and there was a sense of urgency, a sense that it was like a runaway and we were on it.”

“I’m looking for rest, and to relax away from the workplace,” says Hunter, who adds that she has no immediate projects pending. “That’s definitely what’s next for me, just to kind of ease out and take a real break from performing.”

Phish Announces Summer 2010 Tour

Online Ticket Request Period Underway Now;
Tickets Go On Sale To General Public April 2, 2010
Tour Commences June 11, 2010 in Chicago
Phish 3D Due In Theatres This April

Phish will kick off an extensive summer tour on June 11, 2010 at Toyota Park in Chicago, IL. An online ticket request period is currently underway at http://phish.portals.musictoday.com/ and will end on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. EST. Tickets will go on sale to the general public beginning Friday, April 2nd. Details, phish.com .

The band performed Genesis' "Watcher of the Skies" and "No Reply at All" last night at the 25th Annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio inducted the group.

Last year's summer tour - the band's first in five years - included Phish's first appearance at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, described by The New York Times as a "euphoric three-hour set...full of giddy momentum, taking on Phish's more elaborately composed songs like "Chalkdust Torture," "Divided Sky," "Stash," "You Enjoy Myself" and "Wilson." "[Phish] raced through some of its most technical, risky compositions, ducking and diving in four-way syncopation that illuminated the many hours the band has spent rehearsing," said The Denver Post in a review of a concert at Red Rocks. "In fact, everything is back on the table now, with Phish's historic four-nighter at Red Rocks already revealing a stronger-than-ever band willing to tear down and rebuild old favorites."

After the sold-out summer tour, Phish delved into another ambitious undertaking: Festival 8. Held October 30th, 31st and November 1st at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA, it was the band's eighth festival and attracted over 40,000 fans. Highlights from the celebration are captured in the new film, Phish 3D, which will be released in theatres this April. The group played eight sets over the course of the weekend, including its first-ever full acoustic set and, reviving a longtime Phish tradition, a Halloween set that featured them donning a "musical costume," covering a full album by another band. This year's selection was a double album - the Rolling Stones' 1972 classic, Exile On Main Street. Complete ticketing and theatre information for Phish3D will be announced shortly and fans can sign up to receive email updates at http://www.phish3dmovie.com.

Phishhas released 12 studio albums as well as a series of 46 complete live concert CDs. Its series of 146 full concert downloads is currently available on livephish.com. Joy, its latest studio album, was recorded with Steve Lillywhite, who produced the band's Billy Breathes (1996) and albums by U2, Dave Matthews Band and the Rolling Stones. Hailed by Rolling Stone as "a genuinely great album," it was the first non-archival release on JEMP Records,an independent record label created by the band in 2005. The label's initial function was to release live concerts in CD, DVD and digital formats from Phish's extensive archives, which are located in Burlington, VT.

Runaway Hair

Kristen Stewart, a cast member in 'The Runaways,' poses at the premiere of the film in Los Angeles, Thursday, March 11, 2010. Her hairstyle was done in what her stylist's rep dubs an "Homage to the 1950’srockabilly pompadour hair." Get the Look: Adir Abergel applied Full Blown Volume™ Lifting Hairspray to the roots and hand blow-dried the hair until it was completely dry. Once the hair was dry, he took a 1" curling iron and barreled curled two" sections of the top of hair, and pinned it in place starting at hairline all the way to the crown. He then lightly waved the hair that was not in pin curls and left it down. To finish this look he took the pin curls out and backcombed the roots in order to add volume for the pompadour effect. To keep the backcombing in place, he sprayed Fekkai Coiff™ Sheer Hold Hairspray at the roots. Next, he took a paddle brush and smoothed the top of hair into place. He completed this look by applying Fekkai Coiff™ Nonchalant Piecing & Forming Wax on to ends of hair to create some separation and sprayed Fekkai Coiff™ Sheer Hold Hairspray to lock in style.

R.I.P. Corey Haim

John Fugelsang posted on Facebook "I am wishing for the day when well-known addicts get treatment for their disease instead of reality shows for our amusement. RIP Corey H." Haim, 38, was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his Burbank apartment. His mother was with him.

(BeansTalk note: We met Haim many years ago, when he was 14 and fresh from his debut -- and best -- performance in "Lucas." It was surprising how unlike his film character he was; he was into action films and guns. And yes, that reality series, in which he starred with the "other" Corey, Feldman ("The Two Coreys"). They were quite good and fun in "Lost Boys," but by the time the reality series rolled around, Haim was shockingly and embarassingly lost. It was truly cringe-worthy. When Haim was cut out or left out of the 2008 remake/sequel "Lost Boys: The Tribe" and this year's upcoming straight-to-video "Lost Boys: The Thirst," clearly he was having difficulty finding work -- or was he difficult to work with? At any rate, any death is sad, and yet Haim's overdose seems to signal that proverbial "too much, too soon," that doesn't seem to resonate with young Hollywood, as "blind item" reports of Disney teens' and countless other young performers appear in tabloid reports regularly.)

Bourbon Body Scrub

Real Kentucky whiskey, brown sugar, vitamin E and rice bran oil: it may sound like an ingestible concoction, but it's actually Farmhouse Fresh Bourbon Bubbler Body Scrub which exfoliates skin with those ingredients.

"It's of real benefit for women who want a spray tan because its clean finish prevents self tanners from easily rubbing off," says Shannon McLinden, CEO of FarmHouse Fresh®. The exfoliant features what the rep describes as a "sweet molten gingersnap-pecan fragrance mixed with Kentucky whiskey."

The Bourbon Bubbler scrub comes in one size (available in a 12 ounce glass jar; retail price $32.50). The brown sugar helps remove dead skin and stimulates new cell growth, while the non-greasy bourbon and rice bran oil allow for a squeaky-clean dry-down with no greasy residue. The scrub is paraben and sulfate free.

Bourbon Bubbler treatments are available at spas including the Rio or Mirage in Las Vegas.

For spray tanning, Bourbon Bubbler can be applied prior to treatment."It extends your spray tan investment," states McLinden.

Information, FarmHouse Fresh® at 888-773-9626 or www.farmhousefreshgoods.com. Products are available online, in gift stores and at luxury spas and resorts.

Oscar Winner Bullock's Locks

Sandra Bullock's Oscar winning locks were styled pre-show by Frederic Fekkai's Adir Abergel. Here's the behind-the-scenes look at her 'do.

INSPIRATION: Fekkai's Adir Abergel wanted to bring back simplicity, with Sandra’s sleek and straight down-do. The strong side part created beautiful lines to compliment her dress. He modernized the texture of the hair by creating a sleek look, with a slight wave at the end.

HOW TO GET THE LOOK: Conditioned hair is very important for any sleek style. Abergel used FEKKAI ADVANCED GLOSSING SHAMPOO AND CONDITONER, leaving the conditioner on for 15 minutes. He then rinsed and towel dried the hair. Then he parted the hair in a deep side part. Adir recommends following the arch of your brow to choose where to part your hair. He then took a large FEKKAI ROUND BRUSH and blow-dried the hair completely straight, making sure the roots were flat. Then spray with FEKKAI SHEER HOLD HAIRSPRAY to 2” sections of hair from roots to the end and use a flat iron to get a bone straight effect. To finish the look, Abergel took a 1 1/4” inch curling iron and lightly curled the ends of the hair for a nice slight wave and tucked the bangs behind the ear. To complete the look he added the FEKKAI SILKY STRAIGHT IRONLESS SMOOTH FINISH SERUM to create a sleek finish.

THE PRODUCTS ALL BY FEKKAI: Fekkai Glossing Shampoo ($23), Fekkai Glossing Conditioner ($23), Fekkai Extra Large Round Brush ($65) Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray ($23), Fekkai Silky Straight Ironless Smooth Finish Serum ($23)

Burton & Depp Guest on
BBC America Talk Show

On tonight's episode (5 March 2010), director Tim Burton and his favorite actor Johnny Depp talk with BBC America talk-show host Jonathan Ross about their successful 20-year film career together, as well as their new movie Alice in Wonderland, one of seven movie collaboration. Burton jokes their relationship works because Depp has never seen any of their films together. Depp comments, “I prefer to walk away with the experience” - but admits he might go see Alice in Wonderland.

Burton decided to recreate the classic fable because, “If this story was written now, it would be mind-blowing even today...it’s been such an inspiration for musicians and artists...[Alice in Wonderland] is in the subconscious of everyone.” And Depp reveals an inner look into his Mad Hatter character – “someone who is touched by madness but confused by the madness as well...we were trying to turn him into some kind of human mood ring.”

Depp says before the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, he wasn’t a popular choice for leading man, and notes, “they used to call me box office poison,” but he confirms there will be a fourth Pirates movie. Burton and Depp said they’ll continue to work together including a new project, Dark Shadows, which Depp calls a “gothic soap opera.”

Also joining Ross is Andrew Lloyd Webber, who discusses his prostate cancer, “I had an infection and if they hadn’t found the infection they wouldn’t have found the cancer – and luckily I’m in the clear...I’m back.” Webber completed a sequel to Phantom of the Opera, Love Never Dies, which chronicles the story of the phantom and Christine ten years later. Webber describes the project as “twenty years in the making.”

Webber's also looking to cast the next Dorothy in his musical theatre competition show Over the Rainbow. He jokes he's looking for the next Toto, too. Also in the episode, Webber performs the title song Love Never Dies with Sierra Boggess.

Singer Sade returns to the stage in one of her first television appearances in ten years, and performs Solider of Love from her new album.

On next week's, the March 12, 2010 episode, Ross welcomes Lady Gaga, True Blood star Stephen Moyer and English actor and singer Michael Ball.

Friday Night with Jonathan Ross airs Fridays, 10 p.m. ET/PT on BBC AMERICA

Jeri Ryan Has Leverage

by Michael Robinson
BeansTalk Contributing Writer

BeansTalk participated in a recent conference call with Dean Devlin, producer and director of Leverage, a day after Part 1 of Leverage's two-part season finale.

Among questions answered, Devlin said that he, along with the cast and crew, hope Jeri Ryan will stay a part of the hit series as Tara Cole, even with the return of British actress' Gina Bellman’s character, Sophie Devereaux.

Ryan was a late addition to the second season of the TNT series after Bellman showed up pregnant.

“As Gina’s pregnancy came out, we didn’t want to just move her off the show; we really wanted to keep her there as much as possible,” said Devlin. “But we had made the decision that it wasn’t good for the character, for her to have a child.”

So Devlin and the rest of the writing staff had to scrape together a new plot. He admitted that the entire plot of the show changed for this season. For the new plot, the series needed a new grifter, also known as a confidence man or woman, and in came Ryan.

If nothing else, Devlin hopes that Ryan will be back on the show for a couple of episodes.

“Hopefully by the end of the season, her character will be so etched into the lure of our show that the fans will want to see that character reoccur,” said Devlin.

It all will come down to Ryan’s schedule, but Devlin seems more than willing to have her back for awhile longer.

The Future of Cosmetic Surgery?

by Lindsey K. Wagner
BeansTalk Contributing Writer

Want to look younger without an actual nip and tuck? Men and women looking to turn back the clock can now undergo a new cosmetic procedure without knives and scarring: The Stem Cell Lift™. BeansTalk recently observed the treatment. Please see the "before" and "after" photos above.

Created by Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Nathan Newman, this procedure increases the number of stem cells extracted from a patient’s unwanted fat, which is then injected into the face and body, and sculpted to create a natural, younger look.

Lasting between three to four hours, Newman initially performs liposuction by hand to remove the fat, usually from a patient’s stomach. Stem cells are immediately separated from the fat. The concentrated stem cells are re-introduced to the fat and injected into the aged, damaged or deflated areas of the face or hands.

Newman explains that stem cells are smart. Once injected into a new area, they genetically know to reincorporate themselves into the new site. The stem cells are essential to keeping fat healthy and allowing it to regenerate and repair the tissues.

Reducing the risks of traditional plastic surgery methods, The Stem Cell Lift™ does not involve general anesthesia or knives, which Newman says eliminates possible nerve damage or scarring. By utilizing the patient’s own fat, there is no possibility of rejection or allergic reaction.

The entire face can be done during one procedure. Vaginal rejuvenation, body sculpting and lifts can also be performed though The Stem Cell Lift™.

Unlike traditional facelifts where the skin is being stretched to obtain a younger appearance, according to Dr. Newman, his procedure does the opposite by naturally adding volume and lift to depleted areas.

Within a few days, patients are back to their normal daily routine. Swelling and bruising usually fade within four to five days.

The Stem Cell Lift™ starts at $5,500 and can cost up to $9,500 depending on the extent of the sculpting.
