Hot Hollywood Treatment

Kate Somerville. She knows skin. She really does.

Kate Rates (At the Top of Skin Care)

In her Cape Cod-ian skin-care retreat tucked away on Melrose Place, Kate Somerville offers skin care to celebrities and regular folk, like BeansTalk. In the Hollywood universe, the competition for facialists is overwhelming. Whatever their real skin condition, celebrities so often are photographed (unless the paparazzi snatches them unawares) with glowing, flawless skin – their very presence in photographs offers a testament to the validity of their esthetician.

But the truth is, many celebrities are blessed with genetically sound skin, but also take great care of it. Like most of us, they’re not running home, splashing soap and water on their faces, and falling asleep the minute their heads hit the pillow. That said, they’re also probably not indulging in the multi-product regime many skin-care specialists recommend, either.

Many celebs with the prettiest skin are going to Kate Somerville, who won’t be Hollywood’s best kept secret for very long. Somerville, who worked for several years in medical offices, is a skilled technician and analyst – she’s not busy berating your bad skin (so you’ll buy many of her products). She’s not self-promoting about how wonderful she is, and discussing her celeb clients (although we know the list is long). Somerville has made appearances on various television shows, but her genuinely low-key vibe and easy manner can make a client feel completely at ease. Somerville is the sister you wish you had, the cousin you want to see more often, the friend who’s advice you seek. Yup, she’s that good.

Trust us, we’ve been around and around the skin-care world. We’ve had custom creams and DNA samples taken.

We had a facial from Somerville herself, as well as a Laser Genesis treatment by a staff registered-nurse (the latter was scary, but with the results we got, we’re so jones-ing for another). (The 411: By harnessing light and heat therapy, this treatment is designed to stimulate collagen production and promote new tissue growth. Nonablative, and painless, this procedure’s gentle warming effect works to soften fine lines around the mouth, eyes, cheeks, chin and forehead. Collagen continues to produce over time and the result is a smoother texture, smaller pores and less lines.)

Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts: You must go there if you can.

We’re on the Somerville recommended regime right now, which includes every-other-day exfoliation (she actually formulated the jar in front of us). It’s a Detoxify Enzyme Scrub & Mask in One to keep congestion at bay. Natural papaya and pumpkin enzymes work overtime to penetrate pores, kill bacteria and digest dead skin cells. Jojoba beads lift dry and damaged skin cells from the surface, enabling the enzymes to get to work. It also stimulates circulation and detoxifies skin – allowing cells to receive more oxygen.

We then use the Total Vitamin -- Think multi-vitamin for your skin, which feeds skin essential vitamins and minerals for restoring health and vitality. This super light serum contains Vitamins A, B, C & E to balance skin, fight free radicals and combat aging. It retails for $85 for 1.7 oz.

Finally, we follow up with Quench, an advanced hydrating formula which locks in moisture and leaves skin hydrated and healthy. Hylauranic Acid helps cells retain water, therefore ensuring well-hydrated skin and a healthier, more youthful complexion. It’s non-greasy and contains no oils, leaving skin feeling silky. It retails for $65 for 1.7 oz.

Yes, the shop is this nice and she is, too.

Kate Somerville Skin Health Experts is a full-service medi-skin clinic with a warm and comfortable vibe. Emphasizing clinical skincare and advanced technologies, Kate Somerville services and products offer clients comprehensive skincare by combining aesthetics, medical science and botanical elements with internal skincare for total skin wellness. Kate’s signature treatment: The Titan Non-Surgical Facelift.

Unretouched photos before and after The Titan Treatment at Kate Somerville.

Since there are very few actually offering the revolutionary Titan Procedure, Non-surgical Facelift & Body Contouring, it’s worth a trip to Los Angeles to have it done by Somerville, who was at the forefront of this treatment and knows what she's doing. Besides, El Lay is a dreamy spot to visit anyway. Posted by Hello

Unretouched photos, before and after The Titan Treatment.

Safe and non-invasive, the Titan process uses an infrared light source to tighten skin and reverse the signs of aging. Results are immediate. The Titan heats the dermis, the inner layers of the skin, causing collagen contraction while preserving the epidermis, the outer layer, through continuous cooling. As Somerville says, she’s all about the collagen. This treatment stimulates long-term collagen rebuilding leaving patients with increasingly younger looking skin over time. It can be performed on face, neck, abdomen, thighs & underarms.

Kate Somerville™ Skin Health Experts were the first medi-establishment to offer this procedure. Somerville and her team of certified professionals have performed more treatments and have received an unparalleled satisfaction rate compared to others. Somerville spends at least 2 1/2 hours on each client, customizing treatment and performing three-to-five passes on the most needed areas. She recommends a parallel nutritional program to boost collagen production post procedure, too.

Clive Owen's "Sight" on BBC America

Clive Owen in "Second Sight"

The crime fighting reputation of a tough, determined cop is under threat when he contracts a rare condition that impairs his sight and threatens to derail his career in BBC America's new murder mystery: Second Sight airs on BBC America starting May 5, 2005 at 9 p.m. ET/ PT.

Oscar-nominated Clive Owen (Sin City, Closer) is Detective Chief Inspector Ross Tanner, a highly respected copd. Assigned to the brutal murder of a 19 year-old boy in the debut episode, he discovers he is losing his sight to a rare condition called AZOOR (Acute Zonal Occult Outer Retinopathy).

Tanner, in denial of his condition, pursues an increasingly complex investigation with the hope his sight will soon recover. That is until his eager new deputy, Detective Inspector Catherine Tully (Claire Skinner, Almost Strangers, Bridget Jones's Dairy), discovers his secret. The two agree to form an uneasy alliance, where she will act as his eyes and he will help to fast track her career. As Tanner struggles with his worsening condition his dependence on Catherine becomes more than just professional.

Barely holding on to his sight, and with gossip spreading through the ranks about his special relationship with Catherine, Tanner is hand picked to lead an elite new team of detectives. He will head up the Special Murder Unit, designed to take on the unsolvable, mysterious and high profile cases that have gone cold. He recruits the help of his most trusted colleagues to take on this new challenge.

When the pressure of maintaining their relationship becomes too much for Skinner, she transfers out of the unit leaving Tanner to cope with his disability alone. Can he keep it together long enough for his sight to recover while potentially compromising investigations and the careers of his team or will he finally come to terms with his new reality and give up the job he loves?

BBC's "Green Wing"

BBC America presents the U.S. premiere of the surreal and hospital based comedy drama Green Wing every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET, 11 p.m. PT starting May 19, 2005. It aired last fall on the BBC in Great Britain.

Green Wing turns the spotlight on the human interactions, behavioral quirks and social observations of a group of medics who staff the most bizarre hospital ward on television. Rivalries, love, lust, insecurity and ambition all play out to hilarious effect.

Meeting the Green Wing team for the first time is new surgical resident Dr. Caroline Todd (Tamzin Greig, Black Books). She arrives disheveled and under-deodorized on her first day, having spent the previous night in her car. Her day continues to be hygienically and professionally challenging as she meets her new colleagues - a collection of bizarre people who apparently look after patients.

There's smooth-talking, self-absorbed anesthesiologist Guy Secrertan (Stephen Mangan Billy Eliot) who succeeds in tricking her into spending the night at his apartment. Handsome, charming Dr. MaCartney (Julian Rhind-Tutt, Notting Hill) who seems to have cast a spell over staff-liaison officer, Sue White (Michelle Gomez) and the socially awkward radiology guru Dr. Stratham (Mark Heap, About a Boy) who enjoys the swirl of his white coat and gets a weird thrill from playing the recorder as he carries on a tumultuous affair with HR Director Joanna Clore (Pippa Haywood).

The soon-to-be Duchess of Cornwall (and Princess of Wales) with her cuckhold, uh, consort.

FROM ABC NEWS:

An Open Letter to Camilla Parker Bowles

Don't Get the Wedding Bell Blues -- Despite All the Glitches, Your Day Is Almost Here

Commentary by ANDRA VARIN

Apr. 7, 2005 - To: Mrs. Camilla Parker Bowles, c/o Clarence House, London, England

Dear Camilla,

I know it's bad form to address you by your Christian name when we've never formally met. But "Mrs. Parker Bowles" seems so formal. After all, I've read so much about you (and of course listened to that saucy "Camillagate" tape) that I feel I know you. At least well enough for a little woman-to-woman chat.

First of all, let me say, in all sincerity, congratulations on your impending nuptials. In fact, You go, girl!

It's been a rough week for you and your honey, I know. Prince Charles is said to be mighty peeved that the wedding had to be postponed for a day so that he could go to the pope's funeral. (What, they can't hold funerals on Thursday at the Vatican?) All the papers were blathering on about it: "Camilla's Big Day Is Jinxed," blared the headline in the Daily Express. "No Wedding and a Funeral," chortled the Daily Mirror.

Let them have their little laugh. Because in the long run, it's not going to matter.

No Reason for Doom and Gloom

Given the number of problems that have already beset this wedding, some people (and reporters) are wondering what will go wrong next. "It's all gone wrong from the start," The Sun newspaper said, quoting a senior royal source as saying Queen Elizabeth II feels the her eldest son's wedding is "jinxed. It's a huge embarrassment and makes the royal family a laughingstock."

Why all this doom and gloom? Having to push back your wedding a day is not exactly a catastrophe, unless the caterers say they can't show and then keep your deposit.

Holding the civil ceremony at Windsor Guildhall instead of the castle? Who cares. Having your future mother- and father-in-law boycott the actual wedding? Boo-hoo. Like you'll miss them.

None of these count as wedding disasters. Now if you want a wedding disaster, consider:

The 1906 nuptials of King Alphonso XIII of Spain and Princess Ena of Battenberg, a granddaughter of Britain's Queen Victoria. As the newlyweds traveled from the cathedral to the palace after the ceremony, someone threw a bomb at their carriage, causing massive carnage. The 18-year-old bride was not injured, but she wandered around the reception with blood on her gown, repeating dazedly, "I saw a man without any legs."

And what about the engagement of Henry VIII to his third queen, Jane Seymour? It was announced on May 20, 1536. Henry was a newly single man, since just the day before he had had his second wife, Anne Boleyn, relieved of her head. And yes, it was a bad omen. Henry and Jane were married May 30. Less than a year and half later, Jane died after giving birth to a son.

And here's a sad wedding story that's a little closer to home: In 1937, Prince Louis of Hesse and Margaret Geddes were married in heavy mourning, because the groom's entire family -- his widowed mother, brother, sister-in-law and two small nephews -- were killed in a plane crash while en route to the wedding. (The sister-in-law, Princess Cecile, was a sister of the very same Prince Philip who's about to become your father-in-law, Camilla.). Prince Louis and his new wife adopted the sole survivor of the family, a baby daughter named Johanna who had been left at home, but the child died of meningitis two years later.

Now that we've put things in perspective, let's take another look at all the naysayers and their naysaying about the wedding. They can natter on all they want about jinxes and curses, but in the long run you'll win. Why? Let's look at your track record.

Hanging in There

You have a fine knack for hanging in there. Remember back in late 1970s, when everyone was pushing Prince Charles to marry and sire more Windsors? According to various reports, you pushed Diana Spencer as a suitable bride, figuring she was a naive young thing who could be easily pushed aside. Now that was a mistake -- not to mention a little cynical. But by the time Diana had produced the heir and the spare, Charles had had more than enough of her tantrums and dramas. Eventually, he came back to you.

It must have been hard when Andrew Morton's book "Diana: Her True Story" came out, and everybody knew that Diana believed her husband was carrying on with "The Rottweiler." It was reported that you had referred to Diana as "that ridiculous creature." So you lost out in the clever nickname game, and you lost out in the court of public opinion. People made fun of your looks and wondered openly why Charles would prefer you to Diana, who was lauded as one of the most beautiful women in the world. (I know what you're thinking -- meow!) When you ventured out to your local supermarket, angry shoppers pelted you with bread rolls.

And that "Camillagate" tape wasn't exactly a walk in the park either. It's one thing to be known to the world as a married woman who's carrying on with the heir to the British throne. It's quite another to be known as a married woman who's carrying on with a man who wants to become a tampon so he can "live inside your trousers or something." In a word: Ick.

But you didn't try to make excuses or tell your side of the story. You kept your mouth shut. And when Charles decided to seek public sympathy by going on TV in 1994, you reportedly tried to persuade him that it was a boneheaded move. Unfortunately, you didn't prevail on that one. Charles admitted in a television interview that he had committed adultery, and consequently everyone really hated you. Your husband, mortified beyond belief, decided it was time for divorce.

Now there's no point in sugarcoating it -- that was a low point for you. But didn't it work out for the best? Sure, your husband moved out. But you were free to spend more time with Charles. His divorce came through finally in 1996. You began to think that maybe you could start winning a little public acceptance, bit by bit.

That plan imploded on Aug. 31, 1997, with the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, in a Paris car crash. The world mourned. Charles needed to devote himself to his two motherless sons. And you needed to disappear from the public eye for a while.

But again, that waiting game worked. You bided your time. And in private, you continued to spend more time with your man. He began shouldering more and more of your expenses. As time wore on, you met his kids, which went really well, considering.

That ornery old queen mum still refused to acknowledge your role in her grandson's life, and that made Queen Elizabeth II turn all squiffy too. But in the end, who won that one? Queen Mother Elizabeth died in 2002 at the ripe old age of 101, and you promptly joined Prince Charles in moving into her London home. She had a lovely diamond ring that her husband, the future King George VI, gave her back in 1926. Now it's gracing your finger.

You've tried to mollify the diehard Diana fans out there by saying you don't want to be known by her title, Princess of Wales, but rather as Duchess of Cornwall. And if/when Charles becomes king, you don't want to be queen. Princess consort will do, thank you very much.

But here's the thing -- according to all the legal experts, you will automatically share all Charles' titles -- whether you want to use them or not.

And here's where that waiting game you've already proved to be so good at will really pay off. Queen Elizabeth turns 79 on April 21, but she's in very good health. And if she's anything like her own mother, you can expect her to see the century mark. Unlike the Dutch rulers, the British monarchs have no tradition of retiring due to old age and handing over the reins to the heir. So by the time Charles finally becomes king, he'll probably be a little old man. By that point, I bet people won't balk at calling you queen. Come on, who's going to be mean enough to snub a little old lady?

So forget about all those mean people are who making bets on what else will go wrong before the royal wedding. It doesn't matter. After three decades of playing "Stand by Your Man" (albeit not the man who was your husband) and waiting for tomorrow to be another day, you've finally won.

You've got the prince. Some people may wonder just why you want him, but he's yours. And now you're getting all the perks too -- even though you may be a wee bit shy about exercising them at first. All I have to say, Camilla, is that YOU RULE.

So ta-ta for now, and good luck at the wedding. But I don't think you'll need it.

The Stranglers were among the predecessors of punk who began by playing the UK pub band scene. When the notion of punk manifested, The Stranglers were a perfect fit for the movement. The Green Peel Effect

The Green Peel, Before and After

The Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic & Reconstructive Surgery offers the Green Peel, an all-natural deep-peeling treatment for a more radiant complexion, and, claim the BHI doctors, safe and free of any side effects.

"The Green Peel is not just a product, but a natural and scientifically developed skin regeneration process," says Richard Fleming, M.D. co-director of BHI along with Toby Mayer. "It resurfaces the skin in a very natural way over a few days, which is less invasive on the tissue."

Fleming explains the Green Peel consists of a blend of natural herbs based on pure plant extracts. When applied, tiny herb particles lightly polish the surface layers of the skin (by way of facial massage), while increasing blood circulation and gently causes the upper epidermal layers of skin to peel away over several days.

After the treatment, patients continue normal activities. Three to four days later, old, unhealthy skin begins to peel off. On the fifth day, during a follow-up treatment, the aesthitician massages away old skin and applies several Green Peel products that contain vitamins, plant hormones and enzymes, which are absorbed by the “new” skin, for a fresh complexion.

The Green Peel Deep Peeling Treatment is recommended for both men and women and those with “tired” and early signs of wrinkling. It’s suitable for skin problems such as dilated pores or acne, and is safe on all skin types and colors. The Green Peel can also be used on the body to reverse signs of sun damage.

Fleming says an advantage of the Green Peel is that the treatment process is “reliable, predictable, and easily controlled by a skilled, certified physician or aesthetician.” Fleming and Mayer are co-directors of The Beverly Hills Institute of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery and Clinical Professors and immediate past Chairmen of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Department of Head and Neck Surgery, at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. They are dual board certified and both are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. www.bevhills.com. Posted by Hello

Slumber-Party-In-a-Box

Finding Out What Teen Girls Are Really Thinking

As profiled on CBS’ “60 Minutes,” Girls Intelligence Agency’s Slumber-Party-In-A-Box is a marketing tool that enables businesses to reach and understand up to 600,000 teen girls. It’s a twist on the idea of “focus groups.”

The Slumber-Party-In-A-Box concept is designed for girls to invite G.I.A. – and a new product -- into their bedrooms for a slumber party. “Secret agents” report findings to GIAheadquarters.com that same evening.

“The Slumber-Party-In-A-Box program was a great opportunity to get the word out for our Bratz product.” Says Laura Waniuk, Product Manager, BRATZ. While the slumber party lasts one night, G.I.A. tracks the new product, introduced at the party, in the field. A confidential GIA summary report offers clients suggestions on what marketing action to proceed. “After the Slumber Parties we received strong feedback and suggestions straight from our target demographic,” says Waniuk.

Company founder and G.I.A. Chief Executive Laura Groppe designed Slumber-Party-In-A-Box to appeal to today’s young women, who are inundated with media messages. They’re a critical consumer, spending upwards of $80B a year on products ranging from fashion to technology. Last year, G.I.A. hosted thousands of Slumber Parties across the country for clients such as Disney, Mattel, Sony, Vanity Fair, Neutrogena and Oglivy & Mather.

Basically, at one of these slumber parties, teen girls are doing what they normally would be doing, hanging out in their bedrooms with their closest friends and trying out a new lip gloss or listening to a CD. It makes sense that this is probably the most effective way to decipher what the response of the mass market is going to be. In traditional “focus groups,” there’s a more formal sense, it’s administrative and responses aren’t often spontaneous as they are in this setting. www.girlsintelligenceagency.com

BeansTalk loves Indian food (we’re big fans of our local little Shalimar at the corner of Jefferson and Overland). We’'re anxious to try Maurya, which is reputed to have an extensive and innovative menu in a setting of rich, embroidered fabrics, exotic solid dark woods. Five-Star chef J.K. Paul’'s large menu steps away from conventional Indian food and concentrates
instead on dishes with fragrant spices. Trained at culinary school in Bangalore, he worked 18-years at top hotels such as Le Meridian in Delhi and most recently, at Sun and Sand in Mumbai. Paul conjures up curries using freshly ground spices.

Signature dishes, it’s reported, range from aromatic saffron and cardamom seasoned stuffed prawns in rich, salmon-colored gravy, curried lamp chops, ginger lamb, and Chilean seabass lightly crusted with black peppercorns. Many dishes are prepared in the clay oven including minced vegetables and corn Seekh Kebabs. Cumin-flavored pulao rice and a naan-type bread called taftan, tandoori baby potatoes marinated in mustard oil and spices are delicious, especially with spicy mint chutney to accompany them.

"If you are having good food, you must also have good wine," Mahesh Shah, general manager says. "Maurya is all about putting a twist on a familiar cuisine. We also make a mean martini.”"

Edmiston's Wedding Guest Dresses

Aussie Leona Edmiston has designed dresses worn by Sophie Okonedo, Elle MacPherson, and Kristin Davis and her new line introduces dresses perfect for wedding guests. As shown above, an Italian jersey chain print in tones of caramel and chocolate is a great alternative to the traditional floral print. The print is rendered in many styles both long and short, from halter to sheath, all complemented by straps and other details in watermelon, spring pea or teal. Mix black with colors and it can be worn to a wedding says Edmiston, noting her sleeveless black jersey dress with its twirly skirt, demure boatneck – and deep V back banded in coral. Built-in jewelry is another feature of her designs, from a Gucci-esque black shift with pink and green piping and its own Swarovski circle brooch to a pearl-trimmed empire chiffon number in mermaid green. Deadwood Will Be Back

HBO has renewed the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning western drama series Deadwood for a third season. Created and executive produced by David Milch ("NYPD Blue," "Hill Street Blues"), the show is scheduled to begin production of 12 new episodes later this year, with debut set for 2006 on HBO.

The 12-episode second season of Deadwood, which bowed March 6, 2005, sparked critical raves, with the New York Times calling it "absorbing and addictive." New York's Daily News observed, "I fell in love with it...a phenomenal place to visit," and the Washington Post dubbed Deadwood "unlike anything else on TV." Giving the series a grade of A-, Entertainment Weekly described it as "one hell of a great gimmick-free Western," while the Boston Globe termed the show "an occasion worth celebrating," and the Chicago Tribune said Deadwood was "a classic in the making."

Deadwood was nominated for 11 Emmys last year and won two Emmys (Directing for a Drama Series - Walter Hill and Sound Editing for a Series). In addition, it received a Golden Globe Award, for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama (Ian McShane).

Deadwood is produced by HBO Entertainment in association with Red Board Productions and Paramount Network Television; created and executive produced by David Milch; executive producer, Gregg Fienberg.

"Malcolm" Renewed for 7th Season

Fox Broadcasting Company has ordered a seventh season of its Emmy-winning comedy series Malcolm In The Middle. The series airs Sundays (7:30-8 p.m. ET/PT) on Fox.

“We couldn’t be prouder and happier to have one more year to annoy people,” said Executive Producer Linwood Boomer.

Malcolm In The Middle revolves around five brothers whose parents are just trying to hold on until their last son turns 18. Middle child Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) is a regular high school kid trying to navigate his way through life. Although Malcolm has a genius IQ, he can’t seem to make sense of his family, which includes his outspoken, opinionated mom, Lois (Jane Kaczmarek); his dad Hal (Bryan Cranston), who is just a bumbling, big kid at heart; deviant brother Reese (Justin Berfield), who has a penchant for cooking up dinner and trouble; Francis (Chris Masterson), the oldest brother, who’s willing to move from Alabama to Alaska to New Mexico – as long as it keeps him from moving home; covertly sly Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan); and toddler Jamie, the newest member – and scapegoat – of the family.

Malcolm In The Middle has won the Peabody Award and five Emmy Awards.

From Jaqua: Smells just like the orange vanilla ice-cream bars we used to eat after lunch at parochial school (that would be St. Gerard Majella's). A super-exfoliating body polish with macadamia nut oil for moisturizing. 8 oz jar. $22.00

Jump for Jaqua

Hand-some: Sexy Soft Hands Citrus Verbena Crème: Boosted with skin-softening vitamins A and E and infused with herbal extracts, this lemon verbena scented cream is for dry hands. To turn rough, dehydrated hands to satiny smooth while you sleep: Slather on Jaqua’s super-hydrating hand cream, Sexy Soft Hands Citrus Verbena Crème, right before you hit the hay. After you rub it in, rather than wiping off the excess, slip on a pair of cotton gloves and let it soak in as you snooze. Do this every night for a week. $15.00

Feet First: Best Feet Forward Chai Spice Latte Crème: Exfoliating extracts of grape, kiwi and honey help remove calluses with spicy chai scent. To get feet ready for open-toe sandals: Start by soaking your tootsies in a basin filled with warm milk and honey and then scrub rough spots (like heels, balls and sides) with a foot file or pumice. Next, while they’re still damp, massage in Jaqua’s thick moisturizing foot cream, Best Feet Forward Chai Spice Latte Crème, to lock in the most moisture possible. $15.00

BeansTalk's Exclusive Interview!

Sharon Gault (r) with a pop star.

Superstar Make-Up Artist Sharon Gualt on Runway and Real Trends

Jumping from NY Fashion Week to L.A. Fashion week, make-up artist Sharon Gault did the runway shows for Pegah Anvarian, Petro Zillia, and Gaelyn & Cianfarani and talks to BeansTalk in an exclusive interview about Runway and Real Way Make-up Trends

BeansTalk: What was the most amazing thing about this year's fashion week?

Sharon Gault: The most amazing thing about this years fashion week is the diversity we’re seeing from the designers. All of them are really coming into their own style and maturing. Their influences are expanding and that is really showing through in their collections.

B: What are going to be the trends off the runway?

SG: I would describe the trends off the runway as culturally diverse. People are really embracing the idea of expressing their own sense of style, in both fashion, hair and makeup. They are mixing different looks together in exciting, eclectic ways that are both inspired by fashion as well as inspiring the looks designers are creating for their collections.

B: Talk about the must-have makeup for each eyes, face, lips -- what colors, brands etc.?

SG: First of all, I always say that healthy looking skin never goes out of style. The skin should always look well moisturized and natural, and I prefer to just embellish the natural skin tones with a nice translucent foundation like the one from Senna cosmetics. I also think that the smokey eye is going to be a very popular look this season. It just makes women feel so seductive and sexy and I think that soft colors like eyeshadows from Beverly Hills Woman, or the earth tones from Senna Cosmetics fall pallete go well with all skin tones. One of my favorite makeup products is mascara. I love Tony & Tina Herbal Mascara and I love to use a lot of mascara to lengthen and thicken lashes, which really helps open and emphasize the eye. I also like using colored Mascara to add depth and brighten up the eyes. I also think that soft lips, just lightly stained with color are going to be seen a lot.

B: What's the best tip you can offer BeansTalk readers about makeup? How long should you keep it? Or do you keep some longer than others?

SG: The best tip to offer about makeup is to have fun with it. Makeup is not only a way to make yourself feel more beautiful, it is also a way to express your personality. Don't just follow trends but experiment with your own creativity. Keep makeup as long as you enjoy wearing the colors, but don't get stuck using the same thing over and over. Try new things. Be dramatic if you feel dramatic or subtle if your feeling like a softer look suits your mood. Just remember not to over do it. Too much foundation is never attractive. Always lean toward just making the skin look natural and healthy. And I personally find that If I want to wear a dramatic eye than the best thing to compliment that is a soft, nude lip or vice versa. Also don't be afraid to mix different
colors together to create a perfect shade and make your own "one- of-a-kind color" Makeup is a great way to express who you are and how you feel and all of us can have great fun with that concept.

Model at Petro Zillia

BeansTalk: What was different about the make up for each one?

Sharon Gault: For all the shows the focus was on the eyes, but the inspiration that I drew upon from the clothes is what made the emphasis different. For Pegah Anvarian, the inspiration for her collection was Fall in New York. I tried to compliment this by using a soft pallete of colors on the eye in a style that was inspired by Diana Ross in the movie "Mahogany." Our cosmetic sponsors for the show was a new company called Beverly Hills Woman, and the colors of their eye-shadow palette was just beautiful in achieving this look. For the Pegah Anvarian show, I was sponsored by a new cosmetics brand called Beverly Hills Woman and I found that their powder eye shadows worked beautifully to compliment the soft appearance of Pegah's clothes.

For the Petro Zillia show (model is seen above), the makeup look that was inspired by the clothes was reminiscent of a 1970's discotheques look. The look was very similar to that of the Helmut Newton Sex Star's of the 1970's. I wanted to make a very sexy, smoky eye in earth tones and rich gold colors, particularly because this gives a very sultry look and these colors work well on all skin tones. I used Senna Cosmetics for this show and I used their eye shadow palette in brown, taupe, and gold. I always prefer to keep the skin just looking well moisturized and healthy so I used Senna translucent cream to powder foundation to just embellish the natural skin tones of the models. For the Petro Zillia show, because I wanted to use browns and more earth tones that would work well on all skin tones, I loved my color choices from Senna Cosmetics Fall Palette. I also love their black eyeliner in Noir to help create that sharp, catlike shape to the eye which really emphasizes the sultry attitude of a smokey eye.

For the Gaelyn & Cianfarani show, whose designs and fabric choices are inspired by the concept of, "the Modern approaching the traditional" and very earthy inspirations, I used one of my favorite brands, Tony & Tina Cosmetics. They have a wonderful cream eye shadow palette which consists of very rich colors in green, deep blue, browns and golds that remind me of colors inspired by the Himalayan Mountains and the texture of the cream eye shadows gives a very rich, moist appearance that mimics the feel of soil and the depth of rock formations. In the Gaelyn & Cianfarani show, I really loved the result from Tony & Tina's cream eyeshadows and what I did that helped emphasize the depth of the colors was I used one of my favorite mascaras, Tony and Tina Herbal Mascara, and I put green mascara on the bottom lashes and Blue mascara on the top lashes. I love mixing colors and experimenting with makeup in this way.

B: What were the runway trends?

SG: I like to describe this season’s runway trends as intellectually diverse. All the designers were unique and different. They each had different inspirations that they drew upon to create their collections and I felt they were able to manifest them in a creative, wearable and mature way that really displayed their talent. I am excited to see that fashion experts, such as Anna Wintour, are interested in the talent these designers that showed in Los Angeles have to offer the fashion world.

B: Were there any challenges in doing the makeup -- did you have rushes of where you had to clean someone up completely and start again after you'd just done them for one show? How do you do it? What do you use to remove makeup?

SG: One thing that is difficult during the pressure of a fashion show is to create the sharp lines that emphasize the cat like shape of the eye, like for the look I did at Petro Zillia. In order to create such a sharp look, with out sacrificing time, is to use scotch tape or the edge of a business card at the corner of the eye to create that sharp point in no time and with ease. This trick gives you such a precise edge.

Saja Shows Everyone Up

Jewel en coeur velvet dress by Saja

Sensational Saja

Of all the shows at L.A. Fashion Week, Saja was probably our favorite, in terms of sheer accessibility and major appeal. Yoo Lee actually designs dresses that are not only beautiful, but that real people would wear. Instead of blinging up her show or overdoing it as so many were, the highlight, as it should be, were the clothes. The Saja show was a surprise, but a very welcome one. The designs were consistently want-a-ble and there were never a miss.

In the Front Row: Howard Hessman, Megyn Price, David Keith

Saja Trends:

Mid-calf socks with heels

Lots of sumptuous velvet in rich colors – Saja was one of the few shows in which the headliner “Fall/Winter” had meaning

The first ensemble made us gasp, and it featured the sable velvet blouson jacket over an amber rose paillette dress. That jacket, which seemed either Victorian or even Edwardian-inspired, also was shown in slate.

A velvet bolero (so cute) followed, worn over sable pullover with Hepburn trousers (translate: high-waist)

Colors included liquid gold, chartreuse, bisque, sable, blue, slate, hazel, turquoise(a turquoise goddess gown was highly notable). Rich or very vibrant, the colors were beautiful

Patterns were mixed – Gaudi plisse skirt with striped pullover, for eg.

Caplets, boleros, blouson jackets, throw sweaters

Feathered shoes

Coordinating shoes and sandals (color-wise)

Tweed
trousers and boucle pencil skirts

Ribbon belts

Behind the Scenes: Hair by Corey Powell for The Parlour Los Angeles
Make-up: Uzo for Nars
Jewelry: Julez Bryant
Stylist: Nega Ali

Fashion Week Favorite

BeansTalk is SO not one to lust after couture, but this Saja velvet ruched blouson jacket is simply inspiring! From Saja's Fall/Winter 2005 Collection. Our all-time favorite piece from the entire L.A. Fashion Week.

411 on Saja: At four-years old, in her native Korea, Saja designer Yoo Lee began learning to draw and paint. It didn’t take long for her love of colors and textures to manifest themselves into cutting clothes for her Barbie. By 12, she was attending classes at the NY Institute of Art further rounding out her classical art training.

Yoo trained at the Royal Melbourne Institue of Techonology in Australia and the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where she held a prestigious internship under Richard Tyler. After stints as Assistant Designer at BCBG, Designer at Xie and Max Studio (one of our favorite retail labels), and Colorist at DKNY, Yoo decided to create her own line. In February of 2000 Saja was born.

Saja is inspired by the lines, glamour and feminity of 1920’s and 30’s fashion, when women were elegant, mysterious and sensual. With a nod to the renowned French dressmaker Madeleine Vionnet, Saja’s quality is defined in details-french seams, silk linings, only natural fabrics, hand embroidery and beading. www.sajainc.com.

Poor, Poor Plus Ones

Patchwork Hearts: From the Petro Zillia show March 16, 2005 at Smashbox Studios in Culver City.

Colorful Eccentricity at the Petro Zillia Show

Who Was There: Tiffani Amber-Theissen, Constance Zimmer, Paula Abdul, Fionula Hughes, Melissa Rivers.

Who We Were Most Excited About: Amiee Mann

What We Were Most Curious About: Amiee Mann’s black eye

Kickin' It: Started with a hip-hop performance from “recording artists” Jewla’ and RA.W. They “sang,” while four Laker-girl styled dancers swiveled. They performed throughout the show, too, which was, by the way, the final show of the first evening of Fashion Week and the day’s Main Event.

Not Too Surprising: Paula Abdul, who was “choreography consultant,” is teeny tiny, itty bitty.

What We Learned: “Plus ones do not sit in the second row!” (Fortunately for BeansTalk, uber-rep Kelly Cutrone wasn’t speaking to us, but the person to our right. As if this had made a pariah of the poor woman, BeansTalk managed to move a few seats down – actual purpose was to sit behind Karen Brailsford, but now we have a title for the novel we’ll probably never write.)

Petro Zillia Trends:

Super high wedge sandals and platforms

Skirts below the knee

Knee high socks

Knit Argyle

Coats slightly longer than dresses

Instead of a tank or blouse under a tweed suit, Nony put a knit hoodie with the hood over the jacket lapels

The multi-color 60s-style boucle suit is apparently NOT over, as there was one in this show. Run to your nearest mall shop to get one and be in style.

Animal and floral prints mix

Tweed
and leopard were popular with Nony

Long crochets sweaters and crocheted halters

Huge, gigantic lapels are in, too

The heart coat (seen above) featured a metallic purple sweater and collar over a gold charmeuse halter.

Finally, Nony's daughter was too cute for words. She took a bow with mum at the end of the show.
