Tracy Ullman Returns to HBO

Tracy Ullman

Ullman Exposed

Tracey Ullman’s autobiographical comedy special Tracey Ullman: Live & Exposed tells her story from childhood to stardom when it debuts Saturday, May 14, 2005 (9:30-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), on HBO. The show was taped in February before a live audience at the Henry Ford Theatre in Los Angeles.

Tracey Ullman: Live & Exposed presents her without "heavy makeup, wigs or even chest hair." Joined by a live band, with whom she sings her hit single "They Don't Know," Ullman draws on personal photographs and films as she tells her story. She begins her account at age six, when she performed the original "Tracey Ullman Show" in her mother's bedroom, recalling her early struggles as a dancer, and her success on the BBC and then American TV, as well as in movies. Along the way Ullman marks personal milestones, including the death of her father, marriage and childbirth.

Using minimal props, she looks back at some of the characters she's created, and reveals how they came to be. Among the roles she revisits are Long Island matron Fern Rosenthal, hard-luck actress Linda Granger, African-American airport security worker Sheneesha, hard-boiled lawyer Sydney Kross, profane Big Apple cabbie Chic, gay flight attendant Trevor Ayliss, Vietnamese doughnut maker Mrs. Noh Nang Ning, and seen-it-all Hollywood makeup artist Ruby Romaine.

Ullman's HBO series "Tracey Takes On..." ran for four seasons, wrapping its 47-episode run in 1999. Overall, Ullman's HBO series and previous HBO solo specials received nine Emmys(r). Her 2003 HBO special "Tracey Ullman in the Trailer Tales" received four Emmy(r) nominations.

Ullman burst on the U.S. TV scene in 1987 with the broadcast network series "The Tracey Ullman Show," which brought her two Emmys(r), and introducted "The Simpsons." She also won Emmys(r) for guest appearances on "Ally McBeal" and "Love & War." Ullman's film credits include John Waters' recent "A Dirty Shame," as well as Woody Allen's "Small Time Crooks" and "Bullets Over Broadway," "Panic," Robert Altman's "Ready to Wear," Mel Brooks' "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "I Love You to Death," "I'll Do Anything," "Household Saints" and "Plenty."

Wax On, Wax Off

Shobha

Shobha Tummala, owner of Manhattan’s hair removal studio, Shobha on painless, bump-free soft results for that pre-summer bikini wax:

Know when to wax: The best time to wax is one to two weeks before or after your period. The closer you get to your actual period, the more sensitive your skin is to pain.

Tip: Taking Ibuprofen or antacid 30 minutes before you wax will take the edge off and help ease the pain.

Don't Be Shy: Removing your undergarments before waxing is totally normal and makes it easier for your specialist to do the most meticulous job possible. Be prepared to answer questions on the style you desire (triangle, landing strip, etc.) as well as details about how much real estate you would like to uncover (lips, tail feathers—a.k.a. “back area”).

Tip: Speak up, especially if it’s your first time. Remember, your specialist has seen it all and will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have.

Come Prepared: Wait at least three to four weeks between waxes. Your hair should be long enough to lie flat against the skin, at least ¼ inch long, which makes it easier and less painful to remove.

Tip: To ensure that your hair is long enough, avoid shaving for at least two weeks before your appointment.

Don't Be So Sensitive: Since the bikini area can be very delicate, be ready for some redness and mild irritation. One of the main causes of this is wax that is too hot. To avoid, ask the specialist to test the temperature of the wax on another sensitive spot such as the inside of your arm.

Tip: For sensitive-skin types, slathering the affected area with diaper rash cream works wonders, as does a cold compress.

Eliminate Ingrowns: The best way to prevent ingrown hairs: Exfoliate. Wait at least 48 hours before you begin to give your skin a little time to heal.

Tip: Scrub daily in the opposite direction of hair growth with The Shobha Ayate, an exfoliating washcloth made from the natural fibers of the cactus plant, to gently remove the outer layers of dead skin.

About Shobha The menu of services at Shobha SoHo and Shobha Madison include threading, sugaring and henna, as well as a product line dedicated to the traditional beauty secrets of India. Shobha is renowned for its expert cosmetologists and knowledgeable customer service staff, all who have been trained specifically to ensure that clients receive the most impeccable and luxurious service possible. www.shobhathreading.com Posted by Hello

Peter Himmelman at the Cinema Bar tomorrow night.

Peter Himmelman, an Emmy-nominated TV composer, a creator of children's music and a rock troubadour, will play Culver City’s Cinema Bar Wednesday, April 13, 2005 and next Wednesday, April 20, 2005.

His new solo album, Imperfect World (Majestic Recordings), came with a burst of creativity that arose last summer around the Jewish fast day of Tisha B'av (the 9 th of Av). According to Himmelman, "Going without food or water for 25 hours will tend to put you into a different frame of mind." Influencing this record too was the recent death of his younger sister in a car accident. Imperfect World poignantly explores this loss and subsequently grapples with the very notion of "purpose" in a seemingly arbitrary universe.

Music has been an integral part of Himmelman's life since he was a kid growing up in the Minneapolis suburb of St. Louis Park. "I heard a lot of good music coming from behind my older sibling's doors," the artist recalls. He distinctly remembers hearing The Animals' "House Of the Rising Sun" when he was 7 or 8. "That music hypnotized me - opened a door to a world where I could soften some existential feeling of loneliness." Himmelman's family helped form his nascent musical influences. At one time his father owned an 8-track music store and would bring home Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin tapes; his mother's eclectic musical tastes ran to Ahmad Jamal and Thelonious Monk, while his uncle introduced him to John Lee Hooker's Endless Boogie , which a young Himmelman played over and over again.

After getting his first electric guitar - a red Fender Duo Sonic - when he was 12, Himmelman soon started a rock band and began writing songs. During his high school years, he would venture over to North Minneapolis to play R&B with a circle of musicians that included future soul singing star Alexander O'Neal. In twelfth grade, he also became the guitarist (and one of only two whites) in Shangoya, an otherwise all-Trinidadian reggae/calypso band.

Leaving high school early, Himmelman used the pseudonym Sussman Lawrence and got hired as a cast member of Twin Cities, teen-geared TV show Steamroller. Besides doing comedy bits, he also got Shangoya to perform on the program. His new band - a new wave group that later assumed the Sussman Lawrence moniker performed for the first time on that show as well.

Sussman Lawrence's 1980 debut Hail to the Modern Hero! came about as a direct result of Himmelman's quick-witted father. "To make a record in Minneapolis in those days," Himmelman recounts, " you had to be especially talented or have access to a large trust fund." After the band's Steamroller appearance, Peter's dad called the studio where the band had been cutting some demos and pretended to be a "very enthusiastic" Chicago record executive. "The next day," Himmelman relates, "the studio owner called saying that he was "suddenly eager" to press a single." After mentioning the Chicago label's "interest," Himmelman himself was able to persuade the studio owner to pony up for an entire album. The group went on to make one more record, 1984's well-received double album Pop City , but their road to success was derailed when Himmelman's father passed away.

Mourning his dad's death, Himmelman collected a set of new songs that he felt wouldn't fit with the band's tongue in cheek image. The title track and centerpiece of Peter's first solo offering was a song called, This Father's Day -which Peter had written and recorded on a simple tape deck in the basement of his parent's home. It would be the last Father's Day he would ever celebrate with his Dad. "The song created such a potent bond between my father and me...he carried that cassette around in his breast pocket until he died. In 1985, Himmelman released This Father's Day , which Rolling Stone called "stunning." MTV even started playing the video for the song "Eleventh Confession" in regular rotation, and Island Records wound up signing Himmelman and reissuing the album. He released two more albums on Island before moving to Epic Records.

His work has consistently earned critical accolades. J.D. Considine, in the Rolling Stone Album Guide , called 1989's Synesthesia "a delight", awarding it with four stars. Time Magazine heralded Himmelman as one of "the New Troubadours" upon the release of his Epic debut From Strength to Strength , asserting that he writes "songs with the same emphatic edge and aesthetic urgency that impelled the Lost Generation to write novels." In its Unstoppable Forces review, No Depression marveled how "Himmelman strips his music to its essence, tapping into a primal inspiration, investing melodies that have the sing-song simplicity of Buddy Holly or the Beatles with the yearning of a spiritual quest."

Himmelman is also known for his raucous, unpredictable stage shows. USA Today has hailed him as "one of rock's most wildly imaginative performers."

During the '90s, Himmelman, (now living in Los Angeles, married with four children) expanded his musical horizons to scoring a number of television shows and films, including the Disney series Bug Juice , NBC's American Embassy and the Touchstone film Crossing The Bridge. In 2002, he earned an Emmy nomination for his work on Judging Amy, a show he has scored since 1999. Exploring different musical opportunities has long intrigued Himmelman. While living in New York in the early '80s, he wrote music Swatch watches, Jordache jeans, and runway music for top fashion designer Issey Miyake. He's also done national PSAs for drug awareness and written a series of songs for a teddy bear that's currently being used to aid autistic children and rape victims.

Children's music is another field that Himmelman has delved into with considerable success. He has made three children's albums: My Best Friend Is A Salamander (1997), My Fabulous Plum (2000) and My Lemonade Stand (2004), with Both Plum and Salamander being recognized with a Parents' Choice Award and the Family Channel Seal Of Quality. Himmelman finds children's music "a vast and liberating universe of possibility," although noting that his kid's songs and his rock songs "come from very distinct places."

For Imperfect World, which he self-produced in his own studio, Himmelman favored writing songs on the electric guitar instead of an acoustic. He also handled all of the guitar parts this time around; something, he admits, "I'm quite proud of."

Forming the core unit with Himmelman for these sessions were bassist, and frequent collaborator, Sheldon Gomberg (Beck, Rickie Lee Jones, Ryan Adams) and drummer Pete Thomas from Elvis Costello's band, the Attractions "Pete's playing was so loud and precise it made me laugh in the irrepressible manner of a child again." Also lending a hand were Jeff Young (Jackson Browne, Sting, Donald Fagan) on the Hammond B-3 and former Balancing Act guitarist Willie Aron - also known for his work with Victoria Williams and Phoebe Snow- on backing vocals.

"Sometimes I wrestle with the question of -why make a record at all these days?" Is it the desire to reach out to other people- to share my blessings with the world -blah blah blah? Or is it so my wife will continue to find me sexy?"

Himmelman plans to tour to support Imperfect World. Other future projects for the ever-busy Himmelman include another children's album and a television pilot he's been working on with a producer from Judging Amy.

You've Got to Hand It To Them: A woman’s hands are probably the most telling way to decipher her age. Often, hands are sun-damaged and aged and nails weak and brittle: the best plastic surgeon can’t repair that. Los Angeles dermatologist, Harvey Abrams, MD says his new Hand & Nail Clinic rejuvenation systems restores hands to a more youthful and healthy state.

"Just like the rest of the body, hands and nails age too," says Abrams, medical director of Los Angeles' Wilshire Aesthetics and developer of Hand & Nail Clinic products available exclusively though SkinSkin Inc. "Both the Hand & Nail Clinic are the only complete rejuvenation systems that are strong enough to produce results, yet gentle enough for consumers to use at home."

According to Abrams, the Hand Clinic is designed to combat all the signs of aging hands: sun spots, wrinkles on the hands, loose skin, weak and brittle nails, chipping and cracking and deepening ridges on the nails; safely and effectively softens fine lines and wrinkles, lightens age spots, and improves brightness, tone and texture of the hands.

The system consists of a three-step weekly peel as well as daily use of sun and environmental block, and overnight hand brightener. Ingredients include Alpha Hydroxy & Beta Hydroxy Acid, and go beyond, Abrams says, simple exfoliation, and actually rejuvenate hands.

For weak and brittle nails, the Nail Clinic combines its Nail Strengthening Serum, nourishing moisture seal, hydrating polish remover and fortifying nail protector to promote the growth of stronger, smoother, healthier nails. The Nail Strengthening Serum is the first of its kind to include Phyto-Estrogen to replace estrogen lost due to age. Estrogen loss is the primary reason that nails become weak and brittle. Amino acids and Biotin work to help regenerate nails.

On average, women will see results in two to four treatments. Abrams assures all products are safe and have been proven to do no harm. Both the Hand Clinic and Nail Clinic are available to order online at www.SkinSkin.net or by calling (323) 904-4040. Hand Clinic sells for $169.00 and Nail Clinic retails for $79.00. "I have used these same basic products in my dermatology office for over 18 years," says Abrams. Abrams is the Founder and Medical Director of Skinskin Inc., and is in private practice at Wilshire Aesthetics, in Los Angeles. He’s consulted on Leeza Gibbon's Show, Discovery Health Channel, and Soap Talk to discuss developments in dermatology and is a contributing writer for magazines such as Ms. Fitness, Being Alive, IN Los Angeles and La Brea Living.

"Time" Returns on PBS This Fall

As Time Goes By returns on PBS.

The popular British sitcom “As Times Goes By” returns to PBS in two new specials this fall. The shows were produced in London last month by DLT Entertainment and its sister company, The Theatre of Comedy. The series, on which these specials are based, has been popular on Britain’s BBC and PBS stations since it originated in 1992.

The new specials, written by Bob Larbey (A Fine Romance) and produced and directed by Syd Lotterby, pick up some time after the original series left off and reveal Jean Pargetter’s (Judi Dench) great anticipation for grandchildren much to husband Lionel’s (GeoffreyPalmer) dismay. With son-in-law Alistair and daughter Judy having problems things don’t look too promising especially when it’s left to Lionel to convince Alistair to visit the doctor for some tests. But will Jean’s dream of becoming a grandmother come true when Sandy and her husband Harry return from Canada? The deal also gives PBS the North American home video/DVD rights to the two programs.
