PBS' "Untold Triumph"

Filipino Regiments: Above: Regiment members get together in Catbalogan, Samar, in the Philippines shortly after the atom bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (August 1945). Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2002 Hawaii International Film Festival, this film documents and honors the 7,000 men of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments of the U.S. Army who fought in World War II. Even though they endured a racist prewar climate and weren’t even considered U.S. citizens, Filipinos in America rallied to join the American war effort after the fateful bombing of Pearl Harbor. On January 2, 1942, President Roosevelt signed an executive order allowing Filipinos to join the U.S. Army and form a volunteer all-Filipino unit. These troops proved to be skilled fighters and an indispensable force in freeing the Philippines from the Japanese and, ultimately, in the winning of World War II. An Untold Triumph imparts personal accounts of the men’s contributions and sacrifices during the war. Lou Diamond Phillips narrates.

An Untold Triumph airs on PBS Monday, May 30, 2005, 10:00-11:00 pm ET

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, granddaughter of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Co-Chair of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute: "On behalf of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, and the immediate members of my family, I would like to congratulate Margaret Nagle, Joseph Sargent and HBO Films for their efforts to bring to life this often overlooked aspect of my grandfather's legacy. As my grandmother Eleanor Roosevelt frequently said, FDR was not great in spite of his disability, he was great because of his disability. For FDR's struggle with polio deepened his character and gave him much of the strength, courage and compassion that led him to become one of the greatest leaders of the twentieth century. It was because of his own daily struggle with this disease that he was able to understand the plight of the less fortunate in our society. This profound understanding made him more determined than ever to fashion a government devoted to the well being of all Americans, young and old, rich and poor alike." Posted by Hello

Harris Faulkner

Current Affair Correspondent on Stalking

A Current Affair’ correspondent Harris Faulkner wants to protect victims from stalkers and domestic abuse. She knows of what she speaks. On the show’s Thursday, April 28, 2005 episode (syndicated, check local listings for station and times), she’ll offer a show that will discuss how between 1993 and 1995, Faulkner was stalked by an acquaintance, and still deals with the threat.

“I feel the safest when I’m on the air,” says Faulkner of her personal plight to keep her stalker at bay. She claims that with her being on television, her friends and family know where she is and that she is not, at that moment, in harms way.

“At the suggestion of cops, I went to court to get a restraining order, legally keeping this stalker away from me. It didn’t work, nothing did…,” continues Faulkner, who points out that any ordinary person can find themselves in the extraordinary circumstance of being a victim of stalking or domestic abuse.

This was the case for 26-year-old Maranda Williams, whose murder was caught on tape by security cameras at the grocery store where she worked. The loss of this life prompted South Carolina House Representative Gloria Haskins to introduce “Maranda’s Law” stating, “Maranda’s Law would have kept Christopher Williams [her murderer] in jail, awaiting trial after beating her the first time…instead of letting him go free…free to kill her.”

In Faulkner’s case, the stalker too had gotten out of jail in advance of his court date and had found her new home within hours. She says, “When he got out of jail, his obsession to profess his love turned dark and violent. He would do things to let me know he was unstoppable.”

Only a portion of the attack on Williams, a single mother, will be shown on Thursday’s ‘A Current Affair.” Her stalker came into her place of work, held up the store at gun point and threatened Williams for over an hour, during which time police officers attempted to negotiate with him to no avail. He fired two shots into her back, killing her.

“A Current Affair” is one hosted by Fox Sports commentator, author, columnist, lawyer and former NFL star player Tim Green. www.acurrentaffair.com.
