Bonnie Raitt's Latest

Bonnie Raitt

Nine-time Grammy winner Bonnie Raitt will release a new studio album, Souls Alike, on September 13, 2005. This is the singer/songwriter’s 18th album and the first she’s produced.

"This record was a matter of stretching and not repeating myself," says Bonnie Raitt. "Some of the songs are clearly terrain that people have come to know and appreciate from me, but the rest are about finding some new direction and something new to say."

Of the new crop of songwriters highlighted on Souls Alike, she says "I'm as enthusiastic about these guys as I was when I first heard people like Jackson Browne and John Prine in my early days."

It's been three years since Raitt's last new release, 2002's Silver Lining. A lengthy world tour followed the album's release, along with numerous guest recordings (including "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" on Ray Charles' final album Genius Loves Company, which won last year's Grammy award for Album of the Year). Most recently, she participated in the historic "Vote for Change" tour leading up to the 2004 Presidential election.

All the while, Raitt was also dealing with a series of family crises. Her older brother contracted brain cancer, now in remission, while both of her parents passed away less than a year apart. "It's been a heavy time," she notes. Not coincidentally, the opening track and first single from Souls Alike is "I Will Not Be Broken," an anthem of strength and survival with an R&B feel.

"You gotta do stuff that stretches you," says Bonnie Raitt. "I would hang up my spurs if I didn't have something new to play."

Raitt was married to actor Michael O'Keefe from 1991 to 2000.

Nick Jr.'s Summer Kick-Off

Lazytown's Sportacus (he's glad to see ya)

Nick Jr. kicks off its summer schedule on Memorial Day (Monday, May 30, 2005), with a six-episode marathon of the comic/action series LazyTown and the debut of "Power Play Summer," the network's new summer packaging hosted by LazyTown's Stephanie (played by Julianna Rose Mauriello). A week-long rollout of new LazyTown episodes will premiere beginning Monday, June 6, in the series regular timeslot at 10:30 a.m. (all times ET/PT) on Nick Jr.

LazyTown will also join Noggin, the commercial-free, educational network for preschoolers, this summer beginning Monday, July 11, 2005, at 4 p.m. and will air daily Monday - Sunday at 4 pm (ET).

LazyTown was created in Iceland by professional athlete and aerobic champion Magnus Scheving and is set in a village where eight-year-old Stephanie and her friends are caught between a health-conscious superhero named Sportacus (played by Scheving) and lazy bad guy Robbie Rotten (played by Stefan Karl), who spends his time lounging around and eating junk food. A mix of live-action, puppets and CGI animation, LazyTown is dedicated to making physical activity and healthy lifestyles for kids entertaining.

Two-time European Champion and silver medalist in the World Championship of Aerobics, LazyTown creator and star Magnus Scheving is a world-class athlete, entertainer and writer in his native Iceland. During his travels around the world lecturing on health and fitness, parents always asked Scheving about exercise and nutrition for children. As a response, he created LazyTown in 1991 with the book "Go, Go Lazy Town!" and the property was built into a household name in Iceland with businesses including publishing, live theatrical performances and a radio station. LazyTown made its debut as a television show on Nick Jr. in August, 2004. LazyTown is shot in Iceland with an international cast and crew, using one of the most technologically advanced HDTV video and film facilities in the world. Nick Jr. is a specially designed programming block airing on Nickelodeon weekdays from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. (ET/PT) and weekends on CBS (check local listings). Dedicated to preschoolers ages 2-5, Nick Jr.'s Emmy, Peabody and Parents' Choice Award-winning programs are curriculum based, fun and commercial free.

Gwyneth Paltrow the new face of Estee Lauder

At Juan Juan Center in Beverly Hills, senior colorist Barry Reitman is implementing a new, foil overlay process which creates color complimentary to a client’s hair style. It’s called color blocking and it creates better than natural, three-dimensional hair color. “Color is essentially make-up for the hair,” explains Reitman. “As such, you want it to look innate, yet striking. Color blocking is more effective than other techniques at duplicating the depth of color that would otherwise be created by nature.”

Color Blocking includes a new palette of dessert-like hair colors such as

Coffee Caramel (a rich mocha brown with soft caramel highlights)

Vanilla Smoothie (an all-over ice cream blonde)

Exotic Chocolate (a spicy blend of both mocha and dark chocolate)

Celeb fans include Gwyneth Paltrow and Hillary Swank. The process begins at $250.

Juan Juan Center is located at 9675 Wilshire Boulevard, Beverly Hills.

Salute to Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen

The Essence of Cool

You hear it often enough -- who's the Steve McQueen of today? There's really no on exactly appropriate to take up that mantle (although BeansTalk thinks Matt Damon comes a little bit close). BeansTalk attended the premiere of the documentary "Steve McQueen: The Essence of Cool," last night, which will air at 8:30 p.m. on TCM. In attendance were Neile Adams McQueen (his first wife and mother of his children Terry and Chad), Chad McQueen, Walter Mirish, Doris Roberts, Dana Delaney, Christopher McDonald, a way crazy-haired Judd Nelson, and a host of others who attended the event, held at Los Angeles' Petersen Museum at the corner of Fairfax and Wilshire Blvd. (BeansTalk is such an Angeleno, we remember when the location used to be the long-defunct department store Orbachs.)Posted by Hello

Love With The Proper Stranger publicity shot

This film, our favorite of McQueen's (and a general all-time favorite film), was virtually ignored in the documentary, and used as a touchpoint for the still photographer William Claxton who became a friend to the often difficult McQueen (they met on the set of this film and probably took the above photo -- he recently wrote/photographed the book Steve McQueen). They also skip over "Junior Bonner," but concentrate on the westerns (a genre which he was so identified with) "The Magnificent Seven," "Tom Horn," and "Nevada Smith."

The TMC documentary is one of affection and while it doesn't wholly gloss over his violent temper, substance abuse and raging ego, it certainly doesn't dwell on it. This isn't the "E True Hollywood Story," or even an A&E "Biography."

---

McQueen, the quintessential guy's guy, owned about 210 motorcyles, over 55 cars, five airplanes, and over ten thousand miscellaneous items. Most everything was auctioned off by his family in 1984.

He was married three times and two of his three wives (Neile and his last wife, model Barbara Minty McQueen) were interviewed. Ali McGraw, with whom McQueen embarked on an affair during the filming of "The Getaway," was conspicuously absent.

An extensive Steve McQueen fansite (http://stvmcqueen.tripod.com) notes that among wristwatch enthusiasts, Steve McQueen made two particular models very famous: the Heuer Monaco and the Rolex Explorer II.

That same website notes something that is appropriate to this newsletter. In Bullit, McQueen wore Tod's Driving Shoe. Introduced on shoes made for Fiat magnate Gianni Agnelli. Diego Della Valle's signature pedal grippers altered the footprints of die-hard drivers and became a symbol of casual chic" Color: brown. Materials: suede leather. Model Sole: Driver. 100% premium Leather. Made in Italy by J.P. Tod's. They style's still available and retails for $450. Posted by Hello

Love With The Proper Stranger

While not brought up in the documentary, McQueen allegedly had an affair with Natalie Wood in 1970. He also had several "significant" relationships that were omitted -- including one with Sharon Tate and his 24-year-old co-star in "Junior Bonner." Posted by Hello

Bullitt

The 1968 390 GT Mustang Fastback was on display just outside the entrance to the screening and cocktail party. When BeansTalk arrived, Neile McQueen and her family were posing in front of it.

Steve McQueen has, in several polls, been deemed the Coolest Movie Star Ever.

Brian Setzer

Brian Setzer Records Lost Classic

In the 1950s, Jumpin' Gene Simmons stepped into Sun Studio in Memphis and laid down "Peroxide Blonde in a Hopped Up Model Ford." Roughly five decades later, Brian Setzer was sifting through the Sun Records catalog, assembling the track list for his new album, 'Rockabilly Riot Vol. 1: A Tribute To Sun Records' (July 26, 2005; Surfdog Records). He decided to record the song, which was not issued until it came out on a CD box set of rare Sun tracks. To Setzer's surprise, the song faded in at the chorus and clocked in at a scant minute and 33 seconds, the result of a damaged master. With no luck turning up the complete song, he searched for Simmons instead.

In
Mississippi, near the Alabama line, the astonished Simmons tried to recreate the two missing verses. "I couldn't get back to that place I was when I was 18 years old," he said, encouraging Setzer to pen the missing verses. The Tupelo-born Simmons hopped in his car and drove to the Tennessee sessions to witness Setzer and the Nash-Villains record his tune. At the session, Setzer invited Simmons to sing background vocals, bringing the song full circle.

The complete "Peroxide Blonde in a Bopped Up Model Ford" will finally be released on July 26, 2005 some fifty years after Simmons' first recording. One of many highlights on 'Rockabilly Riot Vol. 1: A Tribute to Sun Records,' the song offers a boogie woogie groove, with a Johnnie Johnson-style piano and Setzer's reverb-soaked vintage Gretsch adding just the right amount of kick. As the song ends, Simmons exclaims, "Think about it, kid."
