Shootout!: Raid On Bataan Death Camp
The History Channel Highlight: Luzon, the Philippines. January 30th, 1945. One hundred, twenty-seven men from the 6th Ranger Battalion wait under cover of darkness for the signal to launch one of the most daring operations of the Pacific War. Their mission: strike the infamous Japanese death camp at Cabanatuan, destroy any enemy resistance and rescue more than 500 starving, disease-ravaged Allied prisoners held within the compound. The rectangular-shaped prison yard is ringed by barbed wire fences and protected by dozens of pillboxes and guard towers. All approaches are over open ground with no concealment. Even to the men who planned the assault, the words “suicide mission” seem most appropriate for what they are about to undertake. At 7:40 a.m., the assault begins. As the Rangers try to shoot their way into the prison, Japanese guards open fire.
Sometimes, they took minutes. Others, several hours. Each engagement was a battle of wits, strategies, technology and luck. SHOOTOUT! chronicles famous shootouts in history from the perspective of both sides of the fight. The series examines the personalities, the weapons, the firepower, and the leadership needed to defeat the enemy. Using 3D CGI animation sequences, audiences will experience the thick of battle from the points of view of the players themselves.
