Calling All Planeteers

Cartoon Network Enterprises and Local Celebrity Combine to Bring
Captain Planet, the World’s Greenest Super Hero, to Retail

Apparel Program Featuring Mulleted, Eco-Friendly Icon Debuts at High-End Boutiques
and Department Stores This Holiday

Long before Al Gore, saving the Earth and even mullets were cool, there was CAPTAIN PLANET, the world’s original environmentally-conscious superhero, whose mission was to teach young people about environmental conservation. This year, the iconic character will star in an all-new line of t-shirts as Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) today announced a deal with Local Celebrity to launch a full line of CAPTAIN PLANET t-shirts for men, women and kids. The green-haired icon and star of the popular 1990s television series, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, will soar to retail this holiday as the line launches at high-end, specialty boutiques and department stores in October. The announcement was made by Christina Miller, vice president of consumer products for Cartoon Network Enterprises and Don Calder, President of Local Celebrity.

“Captain Planet was the original hero leading the charge for environmental protection and rocking a mullet long before they were cool things to do,” said Miller. “He truly is an iconic hero for environmental awareness, and we’re excited to offer fans a way to wear their support.”
Created by Ted Turner in 1990, CAPTAIN PLANET is the original eco-friendly superhero and popular tool to teach children about potential environmental hazards. In the Captain Planet and the Planeteers television series, the hero came to life when five ring-wielding Planeteers – teenagers who each summoned a unique power including Earth, Wind, Fire, Water and Heart – came together in response to an environmental threat. Battling villains like Verminous Skumm, Sly Sludge and others, each episode centered upon environmental hazards and ended up with “Planeteer Alerts” which were public service announcements targeted at kids and extrapolated lessons learned from the episode.
“We are very excited to be working with Cartoon Network and the Captain Planet property” said Calder. “We started an environmental t-shirt campaign with Global Green USA in 2006. The campaign has been very popular and we are excited to add Captain Planet to our environmental focus. Our company grew up watching Captain Planet, so we all feel very much honored by the opportunity to develop a line of super fresh Captain Planet t-shirts!”
The Captain Planet and the Planeteers television series is currently in syndication and can be seen weekdays on Boomerang, Turner’s 24-hour cable network devoted to classic cartoons. Also, the network will once again feature a 12-hour CAPTAIN PLANET marathon in April in celebration of Earth Day 2008.

About Local Celebrity:
The Clothing company, “Local Celebrity” was started by a sibling duo in 2003. The company’s first office was none other than a bedroom in grandma’s house and a barn in the back yard where all of the printing was done by hand, one shirt at a time. Within months the little t-shirt business had captured the attention of stores like Urban Outfitters with their witty vintage style t-shirts. T-shirt demand quickly outgrew the printing set up in grandma’s barn, so the duo packed up and headed to LA.

Today Local Celebrity is located in LA, which is also where the manufacturing for the brand is done. Local Celebrity is known as being Hollywood’s favorite t-shirt company! If you watch MTV or read the tabloid magazines, there is a good chance that you have seen a Local Celebrity t-shirt. The brand is also known for their great looking, fitting and feeling t-shirts. “All of the products that we sell (t-shirts, hoodies, hats, thermals etc) were developed by us” says Don Calder. “We take great pride in putting out an amazing product, which is why we avoid shelf stocked garments. Our customers know the difference and they appreciate the time and effort that we put into our garment development”.
