Olfactory Treat
BeansTalk loves to assume a new “personality” by trying new fragrances. We love the new longer lasting Crystal Renee Eau de Parfum. With fruit notes inspiring a playful youthfulness and florals to add sultry sensuality, this scent is very versatile. Less additives enable a longer lasting scent.
Fragrance designer, Christopher Chambers, shares these tips for perfume shopping:
Shop in the morning when your nose is fresh and less affected by pollutants, food and other smells.
1. Don't spritz into the air. You need to know what the perfume will smell like on you.
2. Don't try more than 3 or 4 fragrances at one time.
3. Allow dry down time. After you have had the perfume on for at least one hour you'll know what it really smells like.
4. Clear your nasal passages in between tests to bring your nose back to neutral. Sniff coffee beans or even your shirt.

The Big "O" in Oversized
Big Bags
Lest you think we're suddenly promoting overnight bags, these purses (yes, purses) were featured on many of the runways. The above bag is a Chanel bag that allegedly costs $45,000. Yes, you read that right. Look for Vanessa (Mrs. Kobe) Bryant to have one. Or one of the Olsen Twins.
There was a time when free and fancy-footed gals toted around their Passport wherever they went. We believe the theory was, you never knew when someone was going to sweep you off to Paris (despite the exhorbitant airfares and no direct flights from LAX).
But the move to the biggest bag you could possibly design, short of a garment bag, in which you cart around your weeks' wardrobe....We find this new trend fascinating. It's likely to give much added coin to chiropractors and physical therapists. We predict carpal tunnel, tendonitis.
At least with this kind of purse, you can carry your full size hair spray, hair dryer, your Burberry coat (in case you get a chill), your Lulu Guiness umbrella (in case it rains), your ten-year-old son, as well as his best friends.
You get what we're saying, right? Big, in this case, in this trend, is better. For the time being. Or until your husband refuses to carry your "ridiculous" handbag anymore.

BBC's New Sci-Fi Series Torchwood
From Russell T Davies, writer of the new Doctor Who series and Queer as Folk, comes Torchwood a new sci-fi series following the adventures of a team of investigators who use alien technology to solve crime. Torchwood premieres Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
The team, led by Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman, Doctor Who, De-Lovely), uses scavenged alien technology to solve present day crime - both alien and human. They’re separate from the government, outside the police and beyond the United Nations. Torchwood sets its own rules, delving into the unknown and fighting the impossible.
Everyone who works for Torchwood is young, under 35. Some say that's because it's a new science. Others say it's because they die young.
Alongside charismatic Captain Jack is Gwen (Eve Myles). Initially an outsider, her first meeting with the team sparks a burning curiosity to get to the truth, throwing her into an unfamiliar but exciting world. Clear and instinctive, she understands people and is, at times, the group’s conscience. But can she completely separate herself from her normal life?
The rest of the team is made up of medic Owen Harper (Burn Gorman), young, hedonistic and utterly brilliant; reserved Toshiko Sato (Naoko Mori) who specializes in computers, surveillance and all things technical; the super-intelligent and intense Suzie Costello (Indira Varma) who has devoted her life to the strange alien artefacts under her control; and Ianto Jones (Gareth David Lloyd) who is far more important than his receptionist role suggests.
From an underground base built on a rift in time and space, the team respond to any alien threat – a meteorite crash landing, sightings of extra-terrestrial technology, an unusual autopsy report, the spread of a deadly alien virus.
BBC Video will release Torchwood: The Complete First Season to retail in the first quarter of 2008 on a seven-disc DVD set.

Is it a dress? Is it a top? A tunic? A shift? This season the definitions are more blurred than ever. Nu Collective embraces this trend and offers the customer the shift dress that takes versatility to the next level. It all comes down to length. A shift dress at 34" from center back offers the most options. This length is wearable on most body types, short and fun, but not too risky. The trend setter can wear it alone with the right heels and accessories for the perfect evening look. Layer a jacket or sweater over it and it is ready for the office. She can wear the same dress during the day w/ flats for a more casual look.
Over skinny jeans or leggings, the same shift can take on a whole new look. To create even more possibilities, add a belt, or layer with a tank or tee.
To take the look into fall, the same dress can be worn with tights and boots. The fall runways also featured this look layered with turtlenecks. Designer Mark Anthony Phillips adds, "The versatility factor makes the Nu Collective shift the must have item of the season."

True’s eye shadows are pigment rich and finely milled pigments in four distinct and desirable textures— natural, matte, shimmer and expressive. The palette ranges from elegant neutrals to modern expression. The new eye shadow shades are: Rosewood, African Violet, Wenge, Phalaenopsis, and Jasper. What we love about them is the possibility of combining one, two or three shades at a time. We recommend, for example, applying Rosewood to the entire lid, and accenting the crease line with the darker Wenge. As always, applying the very light Phalaenopsis near the brow will open your eyes up. (Who needs the plastic surgeon?) Retail $18.00
True’s powder blushes in Tender Pink and Soft Plum are designed to capture the natural blush of youthful healthy skin. Alas, this staffer’s eight-year-old daughter has the prettiest example! The cream blushes create the sheer illusion of a natural glow from within. BeansTalk loves to carry a cream blush in our purse as we often haven’t the room for various brushes in our bag. Castor seed oil comforts delicate skin while Vitamin E has antioxidant ability to condition and protect skin. Each blush can be worn alone or together for increased wear ability. Retail $20.00
For the powder blush devotee: “inspired by the evocation of emotions” powder blushes - Blissful and Rapturous. Retail $18
And we must mention the pure lip color Empress. True Pure Lip Colors are rich, creamy, full-coverage shades with moisturizing, protective and line-reduction benefits to lips. Vitamin A and Caffeine stimulate circulation to increase fullness and decrease fine lines while exotic orchid extract complex protects with super antioxidant powers.
Alphonse Wiebelt, Co-Founder of True and creator of the new colors stated, “committed to growing the brand to capture an even wider audience, we created shades to compliment our existing pallet that will adapt to the ever evolving trends.”
The new colors will be available September 15th at all participating True locations.
True unites luxury well-being and dermatological efficacy in performance skin care, cosmetics and professional treatments. The targeted skin care line is sold in six collections addressing specific and changing skin care needs, completed with the essential daily products. The entire brand consists of 205 skus and product categories that include skin care, professional and cosmetics. Prices range from $12 - $120. True is sold exclusively through high-end salon and spas and is currently available in over 400 doors including Nob Hill Spa in San Francisco, Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Sanctuary at Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort and Spa in Dana Point, La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Marriot Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami, Hotel ZaZa in Dallas, and Valley Ho in Scottsdale.
As this BeansTalk staffer doesn’t drink, we often look for other means of relaxation at the end of the day. There’s nothing like enjoying a soothing bath as your cares melt away with the flicker of an aromatic candle. There must be something intoxicating about the summery White Peach candle from er’go ($18.00, from their Library Collection). We think it goes straight to the relaxation centers of the brain.
About er’go
er'go, pronounced 'air-go' was founded in 1999 with the idea of introducing a new candle concept to the world: the marriage of premium fragrance together with natural Soy wax; thus, establishing er'go as the original premium fragrance soy candle. Little did they know at the time, that the soy phenomenon was about to change the candle industry forever. Soy waxes are now becoming common in the marketplace, with er'go strongly established as a pioneer in this new industry.
Pure Fragrance
er’go designs their fragrance blends in-house using only the finest in perfume and essential oils... with no petroleum fillers or dilution oils. This gives a solid fragrance blend that is very clean and pure for your senses. Their blends are extremely intricate, often with fragrance notes 30 to over 100 deep, equal to that of a fine perfume.
Pure Wax
er’go chooses to use a 100% natural, all vegetable Soy wax, made from soybeans farmed in the USA. er'go Soy wax is so pure that it could be eaten. Basically, it is a solid form of soybean oil made without any petroleum by-products or color dyes. What this means to you is a clean burning candle with very little soot.

Hey, we are big fans of the rehab-refusing Ms Amy Winehouse. Who can deny that she has an original soulful voice, and an even more original look? Yet, as beauty professionals we could not resist the opportunity to comment on her beauty do’s and don’ts. For starters, she has gorgeous glowing skin, and seems to choose the right foundation make-up to keep her face fresh-looking; however, this is where her correct instincts end. We offer our tips on how she or any of her fans can refine her exaggerated 60’s look without looking too out-of-bounds.
Eyes. We have to start with the eyes. For God’s sake, the bat-wing eyeliner is – to say the least – alarming. At BeansTalk, we love dramatic eyeliner, and feel that it is absolutely a fashion “do” to go ahead and wear a color that is one or even two shades darker than your hair color, as long as it makes sense with your over all make-up look and the occasion as well.
To achieve the Winehouse drama for evening without looking like you are ready to go trick-or-treating try using a high quality eyeliner like the Elizabeth Arden Color Intrigue Eyeliner in Onyx. This easy-to-use mechanical pencil delivers a super precise line without the drip or mess of a liquid. Start on the inner lashline of the lid and make a fine line from corner to corner on both upper and lower lids. A second line may be added to the upper lid outside of the lash line to mimic the effect of a false eyelash. If you are adventurous, branch out into different liner shades. Elizabeth Arden makes a beautiful gunmetal shade which we find beautiful and your date will find intriguing.
The picture at left is of her arrival at the 2007 Golden Globes.
At BeansTalk we feel that Ms. Cruz' super pumped up lash can be created with our favorite Big Tease Mascara from Bare Escentuals. This little gem of a mascara has a dual brush with short and long bristles. To get maximum lash coverage, move the wand from left to right, left to right, jiggling it back and forth through the lashes as you wand it on. You will get better coverage and results.
Amy Winehouse is apparently a big fan of pink lipstick. If you have seen any of her public appearances, she often coordinates this with her pink eye shadow shade. We must scold her for this. While we feel that pink is a very sweet color for our eight-year-old daughter, we recommend that Ms.Winehouse try to stay away from the pastel pinks she prefers and opt for more nude pinks or natural pinks. Again, we suggest that fans try the Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Lipstick in the Bare or Blush shades. These creamy lipsticks are a bit more adult and will not compete with the dramatic eye make up for attention. Our favorite aspect of this lip color is the ceramide plumping effect. Ceramide will give you the Winehouse pout and full lip which is really part of the singer’s signature mystique. Again, refer to Ms. Cruz’ nude lip color – sophisticated, subtle, a balance to the whole face.
Last, we recommend topping and coordinating the Bare or Blush lipstick shades with Elizabeth Arden’s Lip Definer in Grapevine or Natural. The Elizabeth Arden Lip Definer is an automatic self-sharpening lip pencil, which allows precision during application. The long-wearing creamy and waterproof formula offers consistent, glide-on application and maintains a crisp long-lasting line. We recommend applying the liner after the lip color, as you will avoid the tell-tale line should your lip color wear off first.
New Color Intrigue Eyeliner
• Lustrous, color-intense
• Enriched with vitamins A, C and E.
• Smooth, creamy texture; glides on evenly for a dramatic look
• Smudge resistant; water resistant; oil free

It’s lip plumping, voluptuous, color rich and long lasting. Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Plump Perfect Lipstick takes lips into a high volume new dimension.
Ceramide Plump Perfect Lipstick glides on to deliver lush, full coverage color that feels velvety smooth and has remarkable staying power. “Women are going to back to wanting fuller, more voluptuous lips and Ceramide Plump Perfect Lipstick delivers just that,” explains Elizabeth Park, Executive Vice President Global Marketing and General Manager Elizabeth Arden US. “Its rich, creamy formula gives every woman the perfect pout!”
Mady Flynn, Director of Color Research and Development at Elizabeth Arden explains, “Achieving both moisturizing, intense color and long wear is the gold standard in a lipstick. This formula combines lip plumping and moisturizing benefits in a gel structure that releases a lot of color. And it has an incredibly light, soft touch on the lips when you apply it.”
The Ceramide Plump Perfect Lipstick line introduces a new global shade range that includes both cream and shimmery colors. Whether it’s a soft, sun-infused coral a luscious pink or a full-throttle red, every shade is voluptuous, rich and memorable.

Derek Alpert, President of Los Angeles-based Concern Foundation for Cancer Research, announced Monday that over $1.5 million, including $100,000 from the silent and live auction, was raised to support the work of young cancer researchers at the Concern Block Party held Saturday, July 14 at Paramount Studios. The money from this year pays for the salaries of 48 promising cancer researchers who otherwise would not be able to continue their work in this valuable field. This BeansTalk staffer, a six-year cancer survivor, had the great pleasure of attending this event and had a great time. Read on.
The evening featured food from over 56 LA area restaurants including La Provence, The Grill on the Alley, Lawry’s Prime Rib, Pink’s Famous Hot Dogs, El Cholo, Blue Velvet, Chaya Brasserie and Fogo de Chao. Upon entering, BeansTalk and family literally went into a food frenzy, sampling ribs and tostadas and crepes and topping it off with chocolate espresso cookies! To the delight of BeansTalk’s husband beverages and libations freely flowed courtesy of Reed’s Ginger Brew Products, Stockholm Krystal Vodka and El Charro Tequila. (He was feeling no pain!) The evening’s entertainment included Casino Style Gaming sponsored by Pechanga Casino, where we were quite lucky and won many raffle tickets, the Chinatown Acrobatic Group, Spa treatments sponsored by Paola Kirei Spa. There were three stages of dynamic live entertainment provided by the Tom Nolan Band, Party Layne DJ (where BeansTalk got our groove on!) and the Fresh Green Jazz Band. Psychic and Tarot Card readings drew hundreds of visitors to their booths.
BeansTalk got a real kick out of George Hamilton, who took the stage as co-auctioneer for the spirited live auction. His appearance even resonated with the kids who were charmed by his dancing talents on last season’s Dancing With the Stars. (You go, George!) Hamilton entertained the crowd with his humor, buying some auction items for himself and even including dinner with him as part of some packages. Other celebrities on hand included Fred Willard and James Cahn.
This year’s notable success would not have been possible without the generous support of the Concern Foundation annual donors and friends of this Concern’s honoree, Gene Rosenfeld, himself a Cancer survivor who helped raise an additional $300,000. Adding to the bottom line was support from the following corporate sponsors: American Airlines, Ahmanson Foundation, Cadillac, Los Angeles Magazine, Wells Fargo Bank, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Sara Lee, Jem Sportswear. The theme for this years event “Exploring Ancient Lands and Hidden Treasures, was created by the ingenious John Ferdenzi of John Ben Ventures, Classic Party Rentals, Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising and Hold the Date Events. JEM Sportswear donated Souvenir T-shirts, which were handed out to all of the guests. Guests also received advance copies of Los Angeles Magazine’s August “Best of LA” issue.

Taboo (Not The Failed Broadway Play)
On National Geographic
New Season Explores the Traditions and Rationales Behind a Mosaic of Human Lifestyles and Values — From Painful Initiations to Extreme Body Modification
“If I don’t keep my culture, who will?” — 10-year-old Muko
(Note: BeansTalk loves this channel -- and this is a great show)
Can you imagine a place where your gender was chosen for you after you were born? What drives someone to insert stainless steel fishing hooks into another person’s back so they can hang from the ceiling by their flesh? How is the practice of thrusting hands into gloves filled with stinging giant bullet ants — and enduring the pain over and over — acceptable within a culture? In some societies around the world, practices like these reflect deeply held traditional beliefs or deliberate lifestyle choices. But to others outside the culture, they may seem grotesque, dangerous or…Taboo.
National Geographic Channel’s (NGC) popular Taboo series returns for a new season, taking viewers on a high-definition journey beyond their comfort zones and across cultural borders to explore rituals and customs that are acceptable in some cultures but forbidden, illegal or reviled in others. A special sneak preview airs Sunday, August 5, 2007, at 9 p.m. ET/PT before the series moves to its regular night and time of Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Crossing the boundary between modern practices and ancient beliefs, the series showcases a mosaic of human lifestyles and values.
Each hour-long episode examines one issue from a variety of perspectives, often venturing into closed worlds rarely seen. This season of Taboo travels to six continents and 19 countries — covering over 100,000 miles — and features 25 indigenous cultures.
Hear from some of the world’s most renowned and respected anthropologists and sociologists, who examine a diverse range of cultures. Explore rites of passage, unique lifestyle choices, body modification, gender decisions, nudity and spiritual quests that test the limits of the human body.
“We do quite drastic things in our own culture if you think about it. Plastic surgery is a serious operation and we alter our appearance profoundly — we put holes in our ears, we tattoo our skin, but we find it very odd when other cultures do similarly drastic things that we don’t happen to do,” says Dr. Carolyn Marvin of the University of Pennsylvania.
World premiere episodes include:
Taboo: Initiation Rituals
Sunday, August 5, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT (World Premiere) — Special Sneak Preview
Delve into the rituals that mark the passage from one phase of life to another — where pain is the price of acceptance and failure means a loss of pride and sometimes even a loss of life. NGC takes viewers to Australia, where members of an urban subculture are pierced through their skin with giant stainless steel fishing hooks and hang suspended from the ceiling. Then, deep in the Amazon jungle of Brazil, teenage boys thrust their hands inside specially woven gloves filled with hundreds of giant stinging bullet ants. And they repeat the excruciating ritual 19 more times in order to become men. Finally, in Papua New Guinea, see how boys endure swallowing about 24 inches of raw cane down their throat to the pit of their stomach so they can symbolically die as boys and be reborn as men.
Taboo: Skin Deep
Sunday, August 5, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (World Premiere) — Special Sneak Preview
NGC travels the world to cultures where scarification — modifying the body by cutting into the skin — is not only a thing of beauty, it’s a mark of family history or entry into manhood. Go to Papua New Guinea for one of the most painful initiations known to mankind, where tribesmen slice teenage boys’ chests, backs, arms, legs and buttocks up to a thousand times to create scars that will look like the hide of a crocodile. In New Zealand, watch how some women embrace their Maori heritage by permanently marking their chins and lips with the traditional Maori Ta Moko tattoo. Then, travel to southern Ethiopia, where the Karo tribe believe in an omen called Mingi, a concept that explains to them why things go wrong. Mingi can come in the form of a child with a physical anomaly, such as a cleft lip, and their belief is so strong that they will leave the child to die to correct the apparent wrong.
Taboo: Sexual Identity
Wednesday, August 8, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (World Premiere) — Regular Night and Time
How far will people go to change their looks — and their life — to become the person of their dreams? In America, enter the transgender community, where some men and women undergo surgery and inject hormones to become the sex they believe they truly are. Experts including transgender artist Loren Cameron provide insight into the practice. In Thailand, venture into the world of an estimated 170,000 men who act and live as women, often as entertainers. Although tolerance prevails in this Buddhist country, members of this so-called third sex called katoey often face powerful prejudice. But in the Muay Thai ring, the country’s most famous katoey once competed in this ultra-violent sport; now, she helps other katoey gain success and acceptance through it. And the tiny nation of Samoa, families sometimes raise biologically male children as girls. Known locally as fa’afafini, these boys, some of whom decide on their own to identify as females, dress and act with feminine characteristics.
Taboo: Signs of Identity
Wednesday, August 15, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (World Premiere)
Marks of identity are not always about the artwork. In southern Ethiopia’s Omo Valley, young unmarried women of the Hamar tribe are voluntarily beaten in conjunction with a male relative’s rite of passage into manhood. The women suffer through a brutal flogging in the boy’s name to proudly demonstrate their support of their kin as he takes part in an initiation called the bullah. The beating is a badge of honor for the women, who bear their scars with pride. In Canada, members of an extreme subculture scar their bodies with scorching-hot metal. For some “branders,” it is a test of endurance and courage, while for others it’s a painful but unique form of art. Then, the Japanese equivalent of the mafia draw attention to their criminal lifestyle by a spectacular full-body tattoo, known as horimono.
Taboo: Proving Ground
Wednesday, August 22, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (World Premiere)
How do men prove their manhood? Often, by enduring pain. Get a pass into an American Fight Club, where successful, educated males engage in physical combat to test their manhood, using anything to attack — wooden knives, soda cans, sticks, even soap-on-a-rope. On the remote Indonesian island of Sumba, hundreds of men take part in a time-honored event known as the Pasola. Facing off in two teams on horseback, they charge toward each other hurling spears, all trying to land a blow or knock a rider down. In remote northern Benin, young men of the Fulani tribe must whip an opponent twice during a large public demonstration, then survive two savage blows themselves. This ritual test of endurance is won when a young man does not flinch, but laughs in his opponent's face.
Taboo: Body Modification
Wednesday, August 29, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (World Premiere)
Why would people choose to radically reshape their bodies? Go to the Thai-Burmese border, where women wear heavy brass rings that push down on their collarbones, giving the appearance of elongated necks. For these so-called “long-necks,” an extra-long neck is a sign of beauty. Some have coils long enough to form 25 concentric rings — over 12 inches high. In the West African state of Cameroon, an estimated one in four girls undergo a practice known as breast ironing. Here, a close family member uses a heated household tool, such as a wooden ladle, to push and pound the chest in an attempt to flatten a young girl’s breasts. Then, in American cities such as Miami, see how some men — for vanity’s sake — are augmenting their bodies by surgically implanting silicone pectorals, biceps, triceps and buttocks.
Taboo: Nudity
Wednesday, September 5, at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT (World Premiere)
For some, shedding clothes is an act of expression, of liberation, even a means of worship. In Sydney, Australia, Wiccan witches perform rituals in the nude, or “skyclad,” to express their truest form and bring themselves closer to the natural world. In America, some devout Christians worship together naked in the name of the Lord. Then, watch a centuries-old chaotic event called the Hadaka Matsuri: “The Festival of the Naked Man” in central Japan. Each year one man is chosen to be the “Spirit Man.” He is shaven, stripped naked and must walk from one end of a street to the shrine at the other end. Along the way thousands of seminaked men struggle to touch his bare body for luck.
Other Taboo topics explored this season include trials of faith, extreme performers, mating, pets, gross food and jobs.
