"North and South" Comes to BBC America

Set against the backdrop of Victorian England's industrial north, Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage star in Sandy Welch's four-part adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's passionate love story.

BeansTalk
’s already addicted (and we’ve only seen the first two episodes) of the BBC period drama “North and South." Gaskell’s “Wives and Daughters” (also made into a mini-series starring Justine Waddell) introduced a new generation to a largely underrated author.

North and South
premieres on BBC America in two, two-hour episodes, Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3, 2005 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. PT. Viewers will have another chance to see the miniseries in its entirety when a special encore presentation of North and South airs on Sunday, July 17, 2005 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. PT.

Armitage
starred (in a very different kind of role) in one of our guilty indulgences, the 2002 British melodrama “Sparkhouse” (a modern-day “Wuthering Heights” – loved “Sparkhouse” even though “Wuthering Heights” is overrated. Armitage steals all the scenes he's in, btw.) Posted by Hello

Logan Levant and Nathan Hamill (yup, son of Mark)

Buttercake Bakery: The Secret's Out

BeansTalk adores a good bakery, and we’ve heard the Buttercake Bakery is one of LA's best kept secrets. Logan Levant (seen above with actor Nathan Hamill) recently took over the bakery. One of her signature baked goods is her cupcake – and Levant, conscious of those in L.A. on a constant diet, created “minis” – a taste of that cupcake. Levant’s banana bread cake features a layer of frosting in-between and on top. Levant’s recipes are original and baked fresh daily. Buttercake caters and has plenty of sweet treats for a sweet tooth, on a large or small scale.

Jelessy's garment-dyed embroidered denim

PURE designer Jelessy offered their interpretations of the “perfect little black dress” at the 4th annual Little Black Dress gala June 7, 2005 at W Hotel Los Angeles. The fashion-forward elite gathered to view the designs of 40 handpicked West Coast-based designers, including Kevan Hall, Kara Saun (Project Runway), Sue Wong, Eduardo Lucero, Nick Graham (Joe Boxer), Billabong and more.

The event returned to its Los Angeles home after last year’s New York debut starring fashion icons Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan and Diane von Furstenberg, among others. Unlike a runway show, the dresses were worn by mannequins.

"The West Coast fashion scene has exploded since the first Little Black Dress in 2002," said Emmy Cortes, Little Black Dress founder and producer. "Los Angeles-inspired 'youthful chic' and 'relaxed glamour' is influencing designers worldwide."

Up-and-coming designers were featured alongside celebrities to raise money for the charitable organization, Stop Cancer, chaired by former Paramount Pictures President Sherry Lansing.

The Jelessy Fall Collection features colors such as sunflower, mocha, tarnish, chocolate, and sapphire.Posted by Hello

Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks: Fan of Designer Colleen Quen

Supermodel and creator of “America’s Next Top ModelTyra Banks wore Colleen QuenCouture two nights in a row for her red carpet walk. Quen handcrafted the gowns for Banks, and also hand-selected the colors and fabrics for each of the dresses.

On May 19, 2005, in New York City, Banks attended the UPN Upfront red carpet event in the “Paris” dress by Colleen Quen, posing alongside “America’s Next Top Model” winner Naima. Colleen Quen’s trademark collar in a form-fitting light blue Lycra gabardine dress is from Colleen Quen’s Spring 2005 travel collection.

Tyra Banks

At the 32nd Annual Daytime Emmys at the New York City Radio City Music Hall, Tyra presented an award with Peter Bergman wearing Colleen Quen’s haute couture silk black duchess satin evening gown. Quen was introduced to Banks by her stylist Q, who gave her the opportunity to specially create an evening gown for Banks. To complement and accentuate Banks’ personality and silhouette, Quen created a classic and feminine black strapless gown for Banks to walk down the red carpet.

“I came up with a classic sweetheart strapless neckline with some beautiful black long ostrich feathers to create some feminine charm and romance...The silhouette fits her like a glove from the top down to her hips-- like a corset—I added silk thread topstitching along the entire seems of the dress for fine detailing—outlining her bodylines—and then creating a dramatic full flared skirt with a slight train in the back for movement and for true elegance,” said Quen.

Banks has modeled Colleen Quen in the "Tequila Sunrise" orange silk chiffon gown in the April 2005 Suede magazine. Banks is featured on her official website, www.tyrabanks.com, walking in the “Sake-tini” cocktail dress for the introduction of her photo galleries section. In addition, Banks recently wore the printed silk chiffon “Madame Butterfly” dress for “America’s Next Top Model."

New Tan With Celeb Fans

Jillian Barbarie and Jennifer Lopez are fans, apparently, of a new tanning system Tan by Max Tan: no streaks, no smell. It’s all natural (they even have live plants in the room). Mystic Tans, are all chemicals. Max Tan is currently being done by Max Tans at the Cristophe Salon, Beverly Hills.

Max Tan
is the No. 1-rated spray tan in Los Angeles by Citisearch, Good Morning America & ABC7.COM. Each tan can be custom tailored to the customer’s desired effect. Mike Johles, proprietor, says Max Tan tans to client’s natural pigmentation. Johles says his clients say “"it makes them look ten years younger and ten pounds lighter.” Johles says it’s been nicknamed the "Anti Aging Tan,” as it hides cellulite, varicose veins, scars and skin discolorations.

The solution is made up of DHA, a crystallized form of sugar beets, originally used by dermatologists to treat skin conditions, but they discovered it darkened skin. Johles also uses bronzing salts for a “natural glow.” As a moisturizer, he stresses that it’s good for the skin’s complexion and recommended for those with eczema and psoriasis. $45 per session, each lasts a week on average. Their “Tan in a Can” is good for two full-body tans, and uses a similar formula to the in-salon treatment. Max Tan also offers Mobile Tanning. Get Tan, Man

Mandy Moore

Get Sunkissed Without the Sun

It wouldn’t hurt to start out summer right: with a glowing tan. But before you slather yourself in baby oil and cop a squat under the sun, consider that melanoma cases in the U.S. more than tripled among Caucasians between 1980 and 2003.

And even though you may be one of the 75% of Americans who think tan skin looks healthier than pale skin, or were dreamily inspired by the bronze-y smoothness of Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Aniston, it’s just as easy to get sun kissed without the sun. (For those of you who must go out into the sun, see the sidebar on the very best in sunscreen).

Dr. Katie Rodan, co-creator of Pro-Active and the high-end Rodan + Fields, advocates a “fake tan.”A healthy tan is an oxymoron it doesn't work,” she says from her Bay Area offices. “Tanning, browning or burning of the kin is a sign of a significant UV injury that can only translate into wrinkles, brown spots and skin cancer down the road. If you want your face and body to look like last year's Gucci handbag keep tanning.”

These days, getting a sunless tan is about as easy as finding a Starbucks. There are primarily two main options: having it done at a spa or salon, or doing it yourself at home. Don’t worry too much about the Cheeto-look of old – today’s tanners can mimic the real thing very well (and more evenly and safely).

The Spa/Salon Tan

“A tanning application begins to fade after about a week, says Rita Ukiis, head aestetician at Avon Salon & Spa. “It’s almost always better to have a tanning application at a spa because the aesteticians have he right tools and materials. The most important step in a tanning application is exfoliation to prep the skin and an aestetician is well equipped to reach the hard to reach places on the body.”

At a spa or salon, options include spray booths, airbrush tanning, or tanner applied by a clinician.

Actress Mandy Moore is a fan of Magic Tan: in less than a minute, she gets a perfect sunless tan. There’s no “dancing around” (remember Ross’ tanning booth uneven mishap on “Friends”?). Magic Tan’s clear booth (said to be less claustrophobic) has 36 non-moving spray heads – the more heads, the more even the tan, say reps. Clients stand and are sprayed. Magic Tans last up to seven days, don’t streak and don’t emit a funky smell. Magic Tan fans include Pamela Anderson, Rachel Hunter, Sandra Bullock, and Jillian Barberie, who hand over about $33 for the treatments now offered throughout the country. www.magictancorp.com for locations.

Paris Hilton, in her pseudo autobiography, advocated the Mystic Tan. Generally less pricey ($20 to $30) than the Magic Tan, Mystic Tan applications are in a shower-sized booth. Fans include Tori Spelling and “Friends’” Lisa Kudrow. Skin is misted, client towels off. It lasts about five days. They’ve recently improved on the once "starchy" smell, and were a strong presence pre-Oscars, Mystic Tanning celebrities at the mediaplacement Luxury Lounge at the Peninsula Hotel, a must-stop Oscar suite. www.mystictan.com

Jessica Simpson has often lauded Mystic, equating it with a car wash that gives “an incredible glow.” She says she does it before all events because a tan “makes you look thinner.”

Liquid Sun hopes to be a spray-booth competitor and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Tara Reid and Sharon Stone have gotten the 30-second misting of erythrulose, a natural sugar, which when mixed with the standard DHA produces a subtle shade. Sunless Express is another booth-style tanner.

Spray-tan booth tips:

1. Wear flip-flops and loose, soft clothing
2. Shave that morning, rinse shaving cream well
3. Use non-oily body exfoliant or loofah. Be thorough.
4. Spray is freezing cold. Keep mouth closed.
5. No deodorant
6. Use clear tape to cover nails and cuticles
7. Use the cap they give you, pushed a little bit back from hairline.
8. Towel off. Clean belly button, nostrils and between fingers and toes with a cotton swab and use soap-free wet wipes to prevent unevenness.
9. Don’t shower or exercise for five hours to prolong tan. Keep moisturized. Avoid Jacuzzis and swimming pools (chlorine hastens fading).

California Tan’s CustomBronzing Treatment tans (air-brush style) in under 4 minutes, using the proprietary CustomBronzer 4000, which features a “soft-mist” spray gun for tailored coverage. It’s mobile and fans like Farrah Fawcett, have regular treatments in their homes. Depending on location (www.californiatansunless.com), it ranges in price from $35 to $85. Hilton has tried this one, too, as has Mandy Moore, Pamela Anderson, Gisele Bundchen, Kirsten Dunst, Mena Suvari, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Penelope Cruz and Ashley Olsen. Their California Tan Sunless Neutralizer neutralizes the odors associated with sunless tanning (Spears and Cruz use it, too).

Airbrushed tans enable aestheticians to enhance body contours and produce a flattering glow. J. Lo’s had the High Volume tan done at a salon which uses a turbine to cover more area in less time (two minutes), the pressurized solution shoots out from a wide nozzle.

Up-and-comer Sun FX offered airbrushed spray tans to celebs at recent pre-event “suites.” It can last up to 10 days, depending on skin type. It features all-natural sugar cane based coloring, no alcohol , no smell, purest form of DHEA. Sun FX also offers clients simple shadows for contouring (think cleavage, six-pack abs). www.sunfx.us. At Point de Vue Salon, celebs like Lance Bass and Nicolette Sheridan have done Sun FX. www.pointdevuesalon.com. Samantha Edrick of Felt Tan was at the heaven Oscar Suite offering Sun FX tans to celebs for their red-carpet walk.

Contouring is actually the focus of the Sculpted Tan. Cindy Barshop of NY’s completely bare spa, says it's an "an airbrush technique that enhances natural curves and contours, with the appearance of a slimmer, more defined body. [It] highlights and redefines areas. It lasts up to six days and costs $75 for women, $85 for men.

Layla Fayya of Westwood, Calif.’s Visage de Layla is popular with celebs (Adrian Brody came in for a spray-on tan the day he won his Oscar). She’s just added “The Twinkle Tan,” a sheer golden overlay sprayed on top of the tan.

Many salons have a technician apply tanner, for a more customized effect. Julianna Margulies has had the Safe-Tan applied with a foam brush (feels similar to massage). At the Los Angeles oasis Ona Spa (located above Prive Salon in West Hollywood), tanning expert Juliette Pernes “hand paints” clients. Pernes, who’s from Cannes, France, just did Elle Macpherson, after the supermodel had a body polish.

Posh Spice, Kelly Ripa, and Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett are fans of the $130 St. Tropez Body Bronzing Treatment, which lasts up to seven days. There are also three formulations of at-home products, dries in two minutes. This is the tanning treatment used at the toniest of spas: Four Seasons Beverly Hills, Canyon Ranch Spas and Equinox, among others.

Do it Yourself: Tan

Many of the same principals apply: exfoliate well, tan at least two days after waxing, use product sparingly, moisturize afterwards, not before. Use Protection: Arm Yourself With Sunscreen

Invariably, there will be those who can’t get away from the sun – whether you’re on vacation, work outdoors or need to spend any amount of time under the sun rays, don’t forget to wear sunscreen.

“For sunscreens choose one with zinc oxide which is now micronized, making it invisible or avo benzene, also known as parsol,” recommends Rodan. “Pick a sunscreen that has either one in it. Also, re-apply sunscreen every few hours if you are being active outdoors.”

Chaz Dean (BeansTalk photo)

Love That Chaz

BeansTalk loves Chaz Dean, who hosted the Style Lounge at his Chaz Dean Studios in Hollywood last week.

On Thursday, June 3, 2005, Chaz styled actor Andrew Keegan’s hair for a premiere that evening. He also styled Keegan’s buddy Efren Ramirez (“Napoleon Dynamite”). The two actors cavorted the following evening at the Ciroc 2005 MTV Movie Awards After Party at the Park Place Hotel in Los Angeles.

Actress Natasha Henstridge (the beauty's “The Whole Ten Yards” is currently showing on cable) got her hair cut and styled by Chaz on Friday, and the actress has embarked on a six-month WEN program to recondition her hair. WEN is Chaz’ super cool and innovative line of hair-care products.

Kudos to Chaz for loaning his skills, staff and gorgeous, gated craftsman-style facilities to the Style Lounge. www.chazdean.com for more info on his salon, treatments and products. His products are a particular favorite of the stars of “Desperate Housewives.”

Bling it On!

BeansTalk has always wanted a crystal-frosted phone. At one point, when we had our "Night at The Roxbury" phone, we had it painted and in the process they added a tiny bit of bling (we're talking six randomly placed rhinestones). That company, once on the Venice Boardwalk, is now at Hollywood and Highland in a kiosk. They do good work, we can vouch for it. The reason we had that phone done was because we'd lost our fancy Nextel and had to get an older model on Ebay. It came working, scratched and way too big for the average purse.

That might be all TMI, but we've longed to have one of those super girly phones we see others carrying around. Now we have one (sort of; we "bling'd" the leather cover to our Motorola V710 and want to do it over again -- now that we have a feel for it -- so we actually went on-line and ordered a couple more kits).

Bling it On! is a cute little kit which features various patterns (we actually go the chevron pattern seen above) in an array of colors. You cut to fit your phone. Voila! A bling'd out phone is born. From what we can tell, not only is it less than 10% of the professionally created models (and you don't need to give up your phone for the three day to one-week turnaround), but the crystals seem to adhere as well. Check out the site for more information. Patterns include solid bling, daisy, crystal heart, crystal star, red heart, blue star, strips, chevron. From Nuvo Accessories. Made in China.

There is a promotion going on right now -- orders $39 and more take $5 off total (enter promotional code: 12345). You also get a bonus crystal heart. Posted by Hello
