Gena Rowlands, Kate Hudson in Skeleton Key

Skeleton Key on DVD

Academy Award® nominee Kate Hudson (Almost Famous, Raising Helen) stars in The Skeleton Key, coming to DVD and VHS November 15, 2005 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. In The Skeleton Key, director Iain Softley (K-Pax) delivers a tale about the world of magic, conjure and sacrifice - rituals rooted in ancient tradition, but still practiced today. The DVD has more than 20 minutes of never-before-released scenes from the film, as well as bonus features.

Written by suspense writer Ehren Kruger (The Ring), The Skeleton Key centers on Caroline Ellis (Hudson), a young nurse working in a decrepit plantation house in the ominous Louisiana backwoods. Caroline is hired by the mysterious mistress of the house, Violet Devereaux (Gena Rowlands), to care for her husband Ben (John Hurt) who was left bedridden and unable to speak by a debilitating stroke. Using a skeleton key that opens all the doors in the labyrinthine mansion, Caroline is horrified to discover the house conceals a blood-curdling secret. The key to escaping may lie in the attic but, if she dares to believe in what she discovers, everything she fears will become real. The DVD is priced at $29.98.

She is hired by Violet Devereaux (Gena Rowlands), an elderly, eccentric Southern belle to care for Violet's bed-ridden, mute husband, Ben Devereaux (John Hurt). Caroline is fascinated by her enigmatic and secretive employers and their moldering manor, but a burning sense of foreboding leads her to suspect that Ben's illness is somehow connected to the mysterious goings-on she witnesses. Dora the Explorer, which airs at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. weekdays on Nick Jr. and weekends on CBS (check local listings), is a play-along, animated adventure series starring Dora, a seven-year-old Latina heroine whose adventures take place in an imaginative, tropical world filled with jungles, beaches and rainforests. Dora explores her world just as preschoolers do everyday, and the show is designed to actively engage its audience in an interactive quest using a variety of learning techniques.

In every episode, Dora and Boots invite the audience to participate in an exciting adventure, where each step of their journey consists of a problem or puzzle that Dora and the audience must think their way through in order to solve the next problem. Dora is proudly bilingual and uses her knowledge of English and Spanish to communicate with her friends, overcome obstacles and reach her goals. In each episode, Dora teaches a Spanish word or phrase to the viewers and then asks them to use it to solve a problem and forge ahead. Ultimately, Dora and her best friend, Boots, triumph, and the story always ends with a “We Did It!” anthem.

Dora the Explorer was created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh and Eric Weiner. Gifford serves as executive producer, with Walsh as co-executive producer and Weiner as producer and head writer.

More than 150 dogs and other animals were evacuated from an animal hospital after their owners had left town without them. (Carolyn Cole / LAT)

Rescued Pups

From one of our favorite websites www.snopes.com

In the weeks since Hurricane Katrina hit, hundreds of lost or abandoned pets from the Gulf region have been evacuated and flown to animal shelters around the U.S. where they can be cared for until they are reunited with their previous owners or adopted by new ones.

The picture displayed above, taken by photographer Carolyn Cole, captures one such evacuation in progess, although it shows dogs being transported by bus rather than airplane. The image was published by the Los Angeles Times on 1 September 2005, with a caption describing it thusly: "Over 150 dogs and other animals were evacuated from an animal hospital after their owners had left town without them."

The same photograph was carried by the Baltimore Sun, which often reprints material from the Los Angeles Times. Posted by Picasa

The revolutionary pen applicator makes quick color changes and emergency repairs a breeze, and the lack of "toxic" fumes guarantees discretion even in the closest quarters. Directions: Once the pen cap has been removed and the tip pressed down on the nail surface, product is released and can be spread over the nail and cuticle. To remove, wipe with a cotton pad.

Cuticle Pusher Pen with Treatment Serum incorporates the healthy cuticles serum formula containing natural oils and vitamins. The soothing ingredients penetrate and hydrate the tough outer nail layer, absorbing quickly into the skin - all without leaving any greasy, sticky residue on nails and fingertips. The precision tool pen contours to the shape of cuticles and dispenses just the right amount of essential oils. Jojoba Seed Oil penetrates and moisturizes the tough outer layer of the nail plate and cuticle, Macadamia Oil promotes healing of damaged cuticles and Avocado Oil adds deep moisturizing and conditioning benefits. Best news of all? To eliminate the "ouch" factor of metal or wood implements, the pen has a padded nib that pushes cuticles gently but firmly into place. Directions:Remove cap, dispense serum onto the pen nib by twisting the rotator at the bottom of the pen. For the first time, rotate several times before the liquid dispenses. Stroke serum onto clean nails and cuticles. Push cuticles back.
